First things first …

Before you can set up a Facebook Page for your green business, you need a Facebook personal account. Facebook calls that your “Profile.”

Profiles are for people and are set up under individual names. Pages are for businesses and are set up under business names.

Don’t confuse the two because Facebook set Pages up with the specific intent of promoting your business.

Here are some differences between your Profile and the business Page you’re about to set up:

Facebook makes it easy for anyone to “like” your business Page. That’s what you want! But as a Profile owner, you accept a friend request before they can see your Profile.

Facebook limits your personal Profile to 5,000 friends. There are no limits to the “likes” you can receive on your business Page.

Facebook makes you the only administrator of your personal Profile. But for your business Page, you can designate multiple administrators in order to help manage it if the need arises (and let’s hope it does).

Facebook has made your business Page public by default. But on your personal Profile you can maintain varied levels of privacy. This allows you to customize your settings in order to safely engage with business contacts you’ve accepted as “friends” on your Profile.

Facebook gives you the option of categorizing your business several ways on your business Page (local business, brand, sport, etc). Your personal Profile, however, is just that: a personal Profile attached to your personal name.

So, assuming you’ve already set up your Facebook Profile and are logged in …let’s start building your business Page.

1. Sign into your personal Profile. From there go to www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. “Create a Page” will come up:

Facebook wants you to categorize your business and gives you the six choices you see in the screenshot above. Check them out and choose the one that best suits your business.

Once you’ve made your choice, click on the square you’ve chosen. A window will open asking you to choose a category, type in your business name, and check the box next to “I agree to Facebook Pages terms.”

Be sure to read through these terms so you know what you’re agreeing to:

When you’ve clicked the “I agree…” box, click the blue “Get Started” button. The Set Up page for your business Page will appear, letting you begin by uploading your profile picture.

2. In the Set-Up box, upload your profile picture (dimensions: 180 x 180 pixels, scalable to 32 x 32 pixels. Your profile picture is displayed at 160 x 160 pixels, so be sure to leave space for cropping around your photo)

This image will represent your business elsewhere in Facebook. It will show on your wall posts, newsfeeds or any sponsored stories and ads you may later run.

If you have a logo, use that. Make sure your image looks good scaled down to the small size (32 x 32 pixels) because this will be your gravitar that appears in all other Facebook locations.

When you’ve completed your photo upload, click “Save Photo” and proceed to the next step. (If you want to skip this step and upload you profile picture later, click on “Skip.” Facebook makes it easy for you to change and edit all information you add to your Page at any time.)

3. In the Set-Up box, fill in your About information.

Here, briefly explain what your business is about and what you do. Be clear and concise. Write it like you were a visitor reading it for the first time.

Also, here you can add URLs to your website or other social media channels.

Click on “Save Info” and proceed to the next step. (If you want to skip this step and fill in the information later, click on “Skip.”)

4. In the Set-Up box, grab your Facebook web address.

Enter your company name here so visitors can easily find your business Page.

5. In the Set-Up box, choose whether you wish to Enable Ads:

This is your first chance to decide whether or not you want to advertise on Facebook. Don’t worry, you’ll always be able to choose this later. Facebook makes money this way, so they always make this choice easy for you.

6. Like your Page. (That’s right!)

Once you’ve completed the previous step and clicked on “Enable Ads” or “Skip,” Facebook takes you directly to your Admin Page “Like” section. Take their lead and become the first fan of your Page by clicking the “Like” box:

7. Invite your Profile friends to “like” your new business Page.

As soon as you’ve “liked” your page, Facebook takes you to the Admin Panel at the top of your page. Here, you can choose to build your audience by inviting your Profile friends to “like” your business Page:

8. Upload/import your cover photo (dimensions: 851 x 315 pixels)

Because your cover photo is the first thing your visitors will see when they visit your Page, you want it to represent your business or brand in an engaging and creative way.

Remember, your profile picture will display on top of your cover photo at a 160 x 160 pixel size, 23 pixels from the left edge.

You can change your cover photo as often as you wish. You may also use no more than 20% of your cover image for text. That means that if your cover image is 851 pixels wide, your text should take up space no more than 170 pixels wide (851 x .2 = 170).

Within that 170 x 315 pixel size you can include text such as website information, calls to action and special discounts.

You can also include Facebook’s “Like” icon (or arrows pointing to one not on the profile photo).

Here’s an example of how Mari Smith has set up her profile image:

9. Add your business information. After setting your profile picture, move down to the bar just below and click on “Add Information About …”

Then click the “Edit” button to complete any information you’ve already added or would like to include.

When you’re done, click on the “Save” button. Facebook will take you back to your green business Page.

10. Manage your photos, likes and apps section.

Look to the right of where you were just working (the bar under your profile photo). You’ll see a number of squares for photos, likes and up to 12 apps you can feature if you want.

Your photos will always be in the first spot. Facebook won’t let you move them from that position. But it does allow you to rearrange the like box and other apps according to your own priorities.

While only about 4 boxes are shown on this bar, visitors can view the others by clicking on the dropdown arrow on the last box shown on the bar (see above).

Voila! Your Facebook green business Page is set to go!
