MASTER OF LIBERAL ARTS

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Johns Hopkins Master of Liberal Arts Program offers you a wide variety of courses from across the liberal arts spectrum, making it possible to broaden and deepen your educational experience while exploring and combining topics of your choice in consultation with your advisor. The MLA program consists of ten courses and includes a capstone graduate project or portfolio; Y You can pursue this degree part-time or full-time, on campus in evening and Saturday courses, or online at times of your choosing, selecting from new course-listings for each of the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

MLA courses are taught by faculty from departments at the Johns Hopkins University as well as by faculty from area universities and cultural institutions. As an MLA student, you’ll work with an advisor to tailor the program to your own professional and intellectual interests

and needs, taking courses in fields such as history, religion, literature, philosophy, political science, digital humanities, music, art history, and the performing arts. You’ll explore a world of knowledge while developing your own way of knowing, and whether you want to expand your intellectual horizon, acquire mid-career skills for professional advancement, enhance your academic profile in preparation for further graduate education, or simply read and discuss works by some of the world’s greatest thinkers in an academic context, this program offers you a way to achieve your goal. Our students come from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds, ranging from recent post-baccalaureates to teachers, social workers, business people, lawyers, doctors, military personnel, nurses, social workers, and many more—come and be part of it all!

PREREQUISITES » Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

» Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the latter half of undergraduate studies.

» Particular interests and work experience may also be considered.

CAPSTONE The Capstone is designed to encourage the integration of course work in the program and comes at the end of a student’s MLA career. Students conclude the MLA degree by doing a portfolio, graduate project, or internship. Visit mla.jhu.edu to learn more about these options.

INTERDISCIPLINARY CORE (IC)

Students are required to take one IC course, which should be taken within the first three courses of the program. This core class introduces students to the breadth of the liberal arts, and to an interdisciplinary approach to understanding aspects of culture. One to three IC courses are offered every semester.
