What Are Those Elders Up to Now? Highlights from Our August Session Meeting

The following are some of the decisions which were made this month at Session (elder board) and some of the areas of ministry which were celebrated. We hope you share in the enthusiasm of Session in all that God is doing in our midst. As a reminder, Session meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 here at church. Unless otherwise determined, they are open meetings and church members are always encouraged to come listen in. We’ll even share our snacks! A Reminder that We Are a Family – One of our “unwritten rules” at Session is that we, as a body, are so much more than just a board of directors. We are, rather, brothers and sisters in Christ…for eternity! Therefore, we seek to treat each other accordingly in our work together on Session. If you have recently been to a Session meeting here at Faith you know this is the case. Mission Task Force Recommendations Adopted – After nearly a year of prayer, surveys, forums, task forces and a lot of discussion, the Session unani-mously and enthusiastically adopted the final recommendations of our Missions Task Force. Locally, we have decided to increase our attention and service to-wards those in our community who are facing hunger and homelessness. Glob-ally, we have decided to partner with World Vision and other Sacramento con-gregations to commit long-term to serving a community in Ethiopia. Watch for more details and plans to come on these two exciting new initiatives. Many thanks to all of you who participated in this discernment process.

New Compensation Philosophy Adopted – At the leading of our Personnel Committee, Session has a brand new compensation philosophy which will guide us in setting our personnel budget in the years to come. If you would like to see a copy of this philosophy, contact Personnel Elder, Walt McDaniel, or our Stated Clerk, Claire Pisor. Property Maintenance Manager Position Approved – Session approved the new job description of a Property Maintenance Manager position. Because of the increase use of our buildings, we have come to a place where we need more staffing in this area. A steering committee will begin work immediately interviewing candidates to fill this 10-hour-per-week position. Interested applicants should contact Walt McDaniel. Covenant Renewed with Joan Stock our Parish Associate – Session enthusiastically approved another year-long covenant with Joan Stock. Though Joan is formally retired, she continues to serve as Parish Associate here at Faith, a role that allows us to establish a formal relationship with Joan and which opens doors for her to serve in several capacities. As in the past, this year Joan will occasionally be leading in worship, providing training to vari-ous groups, and teaching in our adult education ministry. We are thrilled to continue this relationship with Joan. If you ever have any questions for any of our elders, a complete list of names, areas of ministry, contact info, and even photos can be found on our web page at http://www.faithpresby.org

Kay Molise Passes Kay Molise died on August 9th. She and surviving husband Bob Molise were long time members of Faith. They moved

away some years ago and will be remembered by just a few older members of Faith. Bob can be reached at 1201 Hancock St, Port Townsend WA 98368, (360)344-0357. There will be a memorial service Friday, August 21 at the Shepherd of the Sierra Presbyterian Church at 1pm. The church is in Loomis at 5400 Barton Rd.

Pastor’s Column by Pastor Quinn

What Jazzes You? When people ask me, “what about ministry jazzes you” I quickly say “connecting with people authentically in our faith jour-neys” (if evening tea/coffee/dessert or outdoor adventures get to be a part of it that is huge bonus). And one of those “places” in which that happens for me more often than not is with the college students. We are a “smallish” group that loves to be together in life and faith. We meet as a life group every Thursday and it never fails to warm and amaze me how authentically, vulnerably and with good humor we share our journeys of faith (sprinkled with doubts and confidence). This summer the greatest combination came together for me….college students, Class IV river rafting on the American Mid-dle Fork, hiking in the Sierra’s, camping in Coloma, S’mores, me-

diation and worship in song. We were surrounded by “God’s Fingerprints” in each others presence, worship, raging river, deep canyons, laugh-ter, honesty, silence, multitude of stars, proclamation of the gospel, and much more. Psalm 8 lead us to see this more clearly one night on a meditative walk…

1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:

7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

This experience leaves me with a question for you…What jazzes you about ministry? Truth is, we as followers of Jesus Christ are all ministers! We are all called to live from and with Christ in all we do; To see and point to God’s Fingerprints all around us. So, do what “jazzes” you. You see, God writes the passion of His heart on ours and when we move from that place, God is jazzed too!

Companions in Christ: The Way of Blessedness Companions in Christ is an experience in spiritual growth that we have held here at faith for the last two years. This year we begin by exploring the Way of Blessedness, which invites participants to cultivate the dispositions of the soul as outlined in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, which suit us for the reign of God while drawing us into its realm. This is a 9-week study of the spiritual practices that help us turn away from pride and fill us with God’s abundant love. As we're transformed by God’s love, we're able to become people who mourn with and for others and our world, who understand and live out Jesus’ example of meekness, who hunger and thirst for holiness, who humbly offer and receive mercy, whose hearts are pure and able to see the imprint of God in all things, who seek peace, and who hold strong in our faith through adversity. Alice Parente is the facilitator for this session of Companions in Christ, which will begin on Wednesday, September 23rd and end on November 18th. Each session will be held on Wednesdays from 7 – 9 pm, and will include experi-ences of sharing, prayer, discussion, journaling, and worship. All are invited, but we are limiting the group to 12 participants. Please call the office if you are interested or sign up at the Welcome Center in the next few weeks.

Adult Discussion Group – A Year of Bonhoeffer This year the Adult Discussion Group with be reading portions of two books by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and theologian who was killed for his opposition to Hitler in the 1940s. Life Together is a classic focusing on the mean-ing and practice of Christian community, and The Cost of Discipleship is an exploration of what it means to truly live life as a follower of Christ in today’s world. Though both books are decades old, their message is powerfully rele-vant in our world today. At some point in the year, we will also be viewing Martin Doblmeier’s documentary called “Bonhoeffer.” The group meets at 2pm the first Wednesday of every month and will begin on September 2nd. You may sign up and purchase your books on Sundays in the narthex. All are welcome.

We are excited to announce that we are offering a seven-week mar-riage enrichment workshop here at Faith this fall. We will begin Tuesday, September 15th, and run through October 27th. Each session will be held on Tuesday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Faith. Cost of the workshop is $75 per couple. The workshop will be limited to six couples. (Scholarships are available. Please speak confidentially to a pastor if you would like one.) The workshop is built upon PREPARE-ENRICH material which is designed to (1) increase awareness of both strength and potential growth areas in your relationship; (2) stimulate discussion concerning issues vital to the relationship;

(3) prime couples for learning valuable communication and conflict resolution skills; and, (4) function as a preventive tool to help couples gain awareness of important issues before they become

major problems. (5)

Participating couples will take a customized on-line assessment which consists of 10 core scales as well as a couple and family map. Computer generated assessment results are compiled in a 10 page Couples Report. In addition to receiving the Couples Report, each couple will be provided a workbook that contains more than 20 exercises cover-ing 14 different content areas. Carlene Mauch, a Marriage Family Therapist Intern, will be presenting the workshop with the assistance of her hus-band Steve. Carlene and Steve have been married for 31 years and have been attending Faith for the past two years. For more information on the workshop, you may contact Carlene at 421-6663. Try This "Get Happy" Strategy Give yourself a warm fuzzy right now. Yep, right now. Just focus on one small good thing. Finding little everyday things to be glad about--and worrying less about the big picture--may be the real key to happi-ness, researchers say.

Savor Small Pleasures During a month-long study, researchers asked college students to keep a daily record of their positive and negative emotions. They were also quizzed at the beginning and end of the study on how satisfied they felt with their lives. And the researchers found that people who experi-enced lots of positive day-to-day vibes were best able to deal with life's challenges and changes and were happiest and most content overall. Keeping It Real Still, being happy doesn't mean pretending that everything is fine when it's not. It wasn't that the happiest people in the study felt no pain. They just had more of the happy-in-the-moment types of experiences than others did. So go ahead and have a good cry when you need to. Just make sure you're letting little things warm you, too. Like the taste of chocolate. Or the feeling of sunshine on your shoulders. Or a smile from a stranger on the street. Try out some of these other feel-good tips: Take a trip down memory lane, surround yourself with good friends, and enjoy a good stretch.

Faith Seeks Candidates for New Property Maintenance Manager Position

Faith continues to make its facility available to other organizations as a part of a commitment to be in mission with our community. This commitment places many demands on our facilities. Additionally, as our facility ages, it naturally requires increased attention and maintenance to keep all systems functioning properly. Historically, the Building and Property Elder had been responsible for many day-to-day property maintenance activities. Session has concluded that the demands of

managing our church facility have grown to an extent that it necessary to create a new part-time Property Maintenance Manager position. To fill this position, the Building and Personnel Committees has been authorized to seek out can-didates who possess the following skills and experiences - • Knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing principles • Experience in facility and landscape maintenance • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures • Ability to develop and administer budgets and procedural manuals

• Experience in supervising staff and directing the work of contract personnel • Full commitment as a growing disciple of Jesus Christ The candidate who fills this position will assume such responsibilities as: • Develop and submit to the Property Maintenance Elder recommendations for the annual Property Maintenance

budget • Provide input to the Property Maintenance Committee on issues relating to maintenance, repairs and use of Faith’s

facilities • Make decisions related to maintenance and repairs of facilities and grounds • Perform routine inspections of the buildings and grounds to identify needed maintenance and repairs • Direct Faith’s Property Maintenance Assistant in performance of duties and responsibilities associated with the

maintenance of buildings and grounds • Perform minor facility maintenance, repairs, and minor custodial tasks to supplement contract work • Direct and/or assist in the setup and removal of equipment, tables and chairs for special events This is a salaried position that is expected to require approximately 10-12 hours per week. The compensation for this

position will be $20 per hour. Those interested in this position should submit their resumes to Faith’s Office Manager, Kristi Kampel no later than August 31.

Dear ARCO faithfuls, My how time flies when you're having fun!! The 2009/2010 Kings game schedule came out while I was in Reedley, CA on the fabulous Faith Mission Trip. The plan for this Kings' season is to do 10 games spread over the season, culminating in back to back Saturdays in early April. We have 1 Friday, 4 Satur-days, and 5 Sundays. Hopefully, that mix will accommodate a lot of people, both Faithfuls and new folks. Please take a look at the attachment and reserve the dates for helping out at ARCO. This year there will be a Trienium at Purdue Univer-sity and we are hoping to give big-time support to the youth that apply and are accepted to attend, as well as our awesome team of Youth Pastors and Advisors. SOOOOOOO......get your calen-dars out and make plans to have some fun at ARCO. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thanks for all your help in the seasons past, and we are looking forward to another successful year of fund raising for our youth ministries. THANKS, Paul Keller

Faith Participates in Fourth of July Parade

Our church was present and accounted for at the Pocket Fourth of July Parade and event. The Outreach Team gathered about 15 Faith members who walked along with our float pulled by Jeff Brown. Our float was interactive. We handed out nerf footballs to the crowd and asked them to pass it through the mouth of the float. Many were successful and were rewarded with cool bottled water. The parade ended Garcia Bend Park where we had a table hosted by Tanya and Bob Anderson. They passed out many more bottles of water and information about who we are. It was a fun way to see and talk with many of our neighbors. --- Ilah Turner

Fireworks a Big Hit This Year The 4th of July was really hot in the Pocket Area. In more ways than one!

This year Faith’s Mission committee team and Faith volunteers sold a record $23,500 worth of fireworks at our booth! As a result, the Mission Committee made $10,756 for the Reedley Mission Trip. Thanks to everyone who worked the booth and to those who purchased fireworks!

Reedley Mission Trip A Life-Changing Experience Love. Build. Serve. That was the simple mission statement for the team that left for Reedley, California on Sun-day, August 2nd. Our team of 25 people ranged in age from 14 to 69 years old; everyone with a heart for service. Our goal was to complete as much work for Self-Help Enterprises as we possibly could. By the end of the week, members of our team had worked on more than 15 different homes! We arrived Monday morning at the work site and were quickly put to work. Three teams focused on different tasks on the lot of homes. The first team focused on rough electrical work on about a dozen homes. The team of about 6-7 people set out with wire strippers and powered through their work. Another team headed up on the roofs. One part of the team measured, cut and fit plywood sections onto the trusses; while the other team nailed the plywood into place. This team finished the plywood for more than three full homes. The third team worked on another group of homes. Their focus was putting the trusses up and securing them in place; they did exactly that on more than three different frames. The teams worked hard each day starting at 8 and ending between 2:30 and 3:30, depending on the heat of each day. God blessed the entire team with safety, good attitudes, and a will-ingness to serve. The families we supported during our time in Reedley were very thankful for our service and sent us home with boxes of hand-picked fruit like peaches and nectarines. They also made us an amazing home-cooked meal, includ-ing carne asada, cactus salad and other authentic Mexican foods, on the last day. Self-Help Enterprises was very grateful for the week of volunteer time we provided them as well as the $1,000 donation Faith Church made to help continue their ministry to the people in need in the Central Valley.
