Dear Friends,

“Mom! Easter sunrise breakfast!” called my bleary-

eyed but excited daughter. Since anticipation is part

of the fun, I told her about our new tradition before

she went to sleep on Saturday night so she was

ready to hold me accountable the next morning.

“We’re still doing it, right?”

With two clergy parents serving different churches,

Sundays can be a bit hectic for our family. And

EASTER Sunday? Well, let’s just say the bunny

doesn’t visit our house. He’s too tired.

But I want Easter to be special. I want it to be about

more than egg hunts and baskets. I want it to be

about more than church. I know that sounds strange,

but my kids get a LOT of church – and they love it.

We love it. We need it. A Christian community that

worships, prays, learns and serves together is vital

for faith development.

But we can’t just read the Bible at church. And my

kids need to hear me pray not just at the front of the

sanctuary, but at the dinner table and the bedside

and even (sometimes) early in the morning,

wrapped up in blankets in the front yard. Because

the most important faith mentors in the life of a

child are not their Sunday School teachers or their

youth group leaders or even their pastors. Children

learn faith from their families – from their parents

and grandparents and all the many beautiful itera-

tions of kinship.

Parents, if we want our kids to know God, if we

want our kids to love Jesus, if we want our kids to

feel the joy of Holy Spirit or learn the holy stories,

it’s on us. It’s a big responsibility (even for pastor

parents, believe me), and it does require a little

thought and effort (even for pastor parents), but it’s

not a burden. And it doesn’t have to be hard. God is

all around us, and opportunities to weave faith into

our daily lives abound.

That’s why I love Traci Smith’s new book, “Faith-

ful Families.” She offers simple, powerful practices

for all the ordinary and extraordinary moments of

family life. From long car rides, interminable rainy

days, and mealtime mania to birthdays, new schools,

and even times of tragedy and grief, Smith does

most of the thinking and a good bit of the work to

provide a ceremony, a prayer, a discussion, or an

activity to make it holy. Her work is easy to access

and adapt to fit the rhythms of different families. If

you spend 5 minutes with this book, you’ll find

something that makes you say, “we’ve gotta try

that!”

Easter is a busy day for us, but it doesn’t mean we

don’t have time for each other. So we gathered the

powdered sugar donuts, mixed the chocolate milk,

poured the coffee and set out across the front yard

to find the perfect spot to watch the sunrise.

“Early in the morning, while it was still dark the

women set out for the tomb…” I began the story.

“Just like us! It’s early! It’s dark but it’s getting

light…” my 4 year old son interrupted.

Yes, just like us.

Food —total of 418# for the 4 months.

Powdered Milk—-7 cases—71 # costing $394.67

The Mission’s Committee takes the month’s food contributions after the last Sunday in each month. The weight

is posted on the bulletin board across from the stairs to the Sanctuary.

We are accepting contributions to the Powdered Milk Fund throughout the year.

The next purchase will be at the end of June. Please consider donating every quarter to the milk fund.

July 25th is Faith’s “Christmas in July”. In preparation for again filling Samaritan Purse shoe boxes, the

Missions Committee has planned a Special Outing to Samaritan’s Purse in

Boone, NC. We will leave Faith Presbyterian Church about 9:45 AM on July

25th and head to Boone for lunch at the Daniel Boone Inn. Then we’re off to

Samaritan’s Purse for our tour of their facilities to learn the magic of Operation

Christmas Child and all their other ministries. We have a tour reserved for

2 PM which will last about an hour and 15 minutes. The leaders of the tour

need a list of those folks who will be on the tour so they can make name tags

in advance. Sign-up will be in June. Hope you plan to be on the tour.

Transportation is arranged. There’s a ten passenger bus plus cars ready to go

up the mountain for a Merry Christmas in July.

Presbyterian Special Offerings:

One Great Hour of Sharing: (April) This special offering is used for Hunger and Disaster relief and Self

Development.

Pentecost Offering for Children and Youth —40 % stays at Faith (we brought Bibles for the children of Faith

last year) (June 4th).

Children receiving their bibles: Kaitlyn Watkins receives a bible on graduation Sunday:

Offering for our Missionaries Charles and Melissa Johnson. They will be coming to Faith in August. What a

great opportunity to see and hear from Charles and Melissa in person.

Children’s Hope Alliance: This offering is used to support children at Children’s Hope Alliance and help them

to go from a Roller Coaster Life to a stable and secure one. (October offering)

Joy Gift Christmas offering in December: This offering goes to church workers to give assistance in their time

of need and for racial ethnic education and leadership development.

Vacation Bible School - June 19-23

We're joining with Westminster Presbyterian, our sister church down Friendly Ave, to offer Vacation Bible

School. Each morning, the kids will hear Bible stories, sing songs, make crafts, play fun games, and share the

joy of the Lord!

What- Vacation Bible School - focus on Parables of Jesus - stories, songs, crafts, games, and tons of fun!

Who - Kindergarten - 6th grade. (younger children of adult volunteers are welcome)

When - June 19-23. 9am-noon.

Cost - for Faith kids will be $10 per child, or $20 per family. If these costs are prohibitive, let Karen know.

Volunteers Needed - We would love to have our adults and youth there to connect with our kids. If you are able

to come every day, that would be amazing, but we also welcome daily volunteers.

Volunteer Training - Wed, June 7 – 7pm; *OR* Wed June 14 – 5:30pm. No childcare, but children are wel-

come to bring something to do and play in the room where we meet or older kids can study across the hall. (If

the weather is nice, the playground is right outside the door of the training room.)

Please let Karen know ASAP if you think you will attend or volunteer.

Westminster is ordering materials now, so they need our numbers as soon as possible. They do not allow walk-

in registrations, so we do need to make these decisions now.

VBS Children’s Registration link - http://www.westpreschurch.org/vacation-bible-school-2017 (there is a link

on this 1st page for the volunteer to register too)
