Dawn Walker, Program Coordinator & Music Teacher“My background includes classes in Kodaly singing, Kindermusik and Musikgarten. I have a Master of Music degree with a classical music emphasis, and a vast knowledge of American folk music. I like to incorporate all of these styles in my classes, building skills through listening, singing, movement and rhythmic games.”

Daniel Garcia, Music Teacher“I have worked many years as an early childhood educator and incorporate music into my daily curriculum with children in the classroom. My educational background allows me to bring a unique teaching style to my classes, incorporating singing with guitar, musical games, movement and exploration of rhythm instruments.”

Chaia May, Music Teacher“I have been teaching music and movement classes for the last 25 years throughout the Bay Area. My background includes training as a teacher in Music Together, Baby Suzuki, Orff-Shulwerk, voice, multiple dance forms, and coursework in early childhood development.”

Mary Ellen Pense, Music Teacher“As a music educator for the past 25 years, I have worked with both preschool and school-aged children. My core philosophy is learning through play. Nursery rhymes, singing games, folk songs and movement are the perfect way to teach music concepts and motivate learners with active participation. This approach is especially true for the very young not yet reading and is supported by both my Orff-Schulwerk training and Kodaly Association membership.”

In the Words of Our Preschool Faculty

Christina Stein, Music Teacher“I have a background in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I have taught music and movement classes for young children for several years, and also have a thorough knowledge of brass instruments and music theory. I enjoy exposing young children to the joys of music making!”

Lena Boot, Art Teacher“In addition to my work as an early childhood educator, my teaching passion is working with preschool-age children giving them opportunities to be creative in art. Creating art is a sensory activity that allows children to observe, explore and use fine motor and cognitive skills. Art provides them with an awareness of themselves and their surroundings.”

Jo Vadeboncoeur, Art Teacher“My teaching style reflects my background in child development and art education. Learning through exploration is central to my process-oriented classes. I like to set the stage with multiple projects in the classroom and let the students approach the materials on their own terms. I use inquiry-based learning to engage with students and their art. My goal is for children to be confident that they are artists and that they can try anything.”

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, students must be nominated by a faculty member. Students only become eligible for nomination after one year of continuous CSMA private lessons (or 18 months, if absent during summer). Each year, CSMA awards approximately 50 Merit Scholarships, with competitive auditions before a panel of judges held annually in the spring.

Merit Scholarship students and their families are regarded as the ambassadors of the CSMA Music School and are role models for all of our music students and their families.

•STUDENTRECITAlSStudent recitals at CSMA are given at the end of each semester and provide an invaluable opportunity for students to give a formal presentation and to gain confidence in front of an audience of family and friends. For a recital schedule, see: www.arts4all.org/attend/calendar.htm#recitals. All student recitals are free and open to the public.

Additional Opportunities for Private Lesson Students•MUSICEXAMINATIONS

CSMA hosts and prepares students for the practical and theory examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), an international organization that operates music examinations in over 90 countries every year. Faculty select students for whom the ABRSM curriculum and performance challenge provide appropriate motivation and reward. Over 350 students from throughout Silicon Valley come to CSMA twice a year to perform for the ABRSM examiner who travels from London.

Last year, of the 100+ CSMA students who took either the ABRSM Practical (includes performance and aural training) or Theory Exams, 100% passed. The world-wide exam pass rate is approximately 87%. Most CSMA students taking the exams annually pass with Distinction or Merit.

Meet Cover girl & Merit Scholar ethelWhen 7-year old Ethel arrives at CSMA for her piano

lessonwithMrs.Kurtova,shecan’twaittostartplaying.

She’sbeenpracticingpiecesbyBach,Beethoven,Chopin,

and Tchaikovsky and is eager to put her fingers on the

piano keys. And when she does, WOW!

Atonly3’11”,EthelpacksaBIGpianopunch,playing

compositions that would be challenging for any musi-

cian, regardless of age. “Talented, confident, enthusiastic”

describe this precocious little girl, entering third grade

this fall, whose diminutive size and tiny fingers belie the

sound that she creates.

Ethel is also a composer. “My March in C, Op. 1, is in rondo

form,” says Ethel. (For the uninitiated, rondo is a musical

form in which a motif is repeated at the beginning,

throughout, and at the end of the composition.) When

asked what inspired her to compose the piece, Ethel

says, “Well, I like to compose on the computer. I just start

putting down notes and I get something I like.”

Ethel has been studying piano for two years with CSMA

Distinguished Teacher Ludmila Kurtova, who describes

Ethel as, “Wonderful, creative and very musical,” adding

that even at such a young age, she is capable of playing,

“classical, romantic and modern music.”

Ethel is one of the youngest recipients ever of a CSMA

Merit Scholarship, one of 52 to be awarded for the 2011-

12 school year to students who have shown outstanding

commitment and progress in their studies. When asked

about being nervous auditioning for the scholarship

before a panel of judges, Ethel says confidently, “No, not

really,becauseI’musedtoplayinginfrontofpeople.”

Ethelwasoneof7studentswhoperformedforacrowdof200+peopleatCSMA’sspringgalabenefit.

Infact,Ethel’smotherAnastasiasaysthatalthoughEthelpracticesatleastonehoureverydayofthe

week, Ethel really likes to perform more than she likes to practice.

As a Merit Scholar, Ethel can look forward to many more performances at which audience members

will hear this little girl– with a big smile and lots of natural “pizzazz”– making wonderful music.

And what is Ethel looking forward to in the future? “I want to be a doctor who heals animals on the

moon with music therapy.” But before she does that, she is going to have to wait a few years. . . or at

least until her feet can reach the music pedals on the piano!

Distinguished Teacher Ludmila Kurtova & Ethel

I want to be a doctor who heals animals on the moon with music therapy.

the Many Faces of Financial Aid CSMA has always been committed to providing support to families in need. For our

upcomingfiscalyear,wehaveallocatedcloseto$285,000forfinancialaid.Asanon-profit

organization, we must fundraise year round to ensure our commitment to “Arts for All.”

Infact,one-thirdofCSMA’sbudgetcomesfromcontributedincomefromindividuals,

foundations, corporations, and government and community agencies.

Who benefits from financial aid?

• Children from our in-school programs (Art4Schools, Music4Schools) annually reaching

8,500+ students with weekly instruction at 35 Silicon Valley schools. CSMA provides

program subsidies to many of these schools, some of which are Title 1 reaching low-income

families in E. Palo Alto, E. San Jose, etc.

• Children from our Art4Schools program awarded full summer camp/class scholarships to

study at Finn Center. (See picture below.)

• Students participating in our honor band or honor strings. This past summer, about 60

students benefited from this program, entirely underwritten by CSMA.

• Middle school students from needy families attending Finn Center summer classes

through an on-going partnership between CSMA and Mesa de la Comunidad, a Mtn. View

community organization.

• Students enrolled in lessons, classes and camps who, throughout the year, receive tuition

aid of up to 50%, depending upon family need.

• Merit Scholars, such as our cover girl Ethel (see her story on pg 31), recognized for

outstanding talent and commitment.

CSMA is a community resource available to all, regardless of age, level or economic

means. That is why there are so very “many faces of financial aid” at CSMA!
