There’s an old clichédT-shirt that makes therounds of the sports world, almost exclusivelyreserved for traditionalpowerhouses — ‘We don’trebuild. We reload.’ The Rosman High vol-leyball team doesn’t use it— yet — but by any defini-tion the Lady Tigers havebuilt a dynasty in the 1-Aranks. Last year, Rosmanadvanced to the fourthround of the playoffsbefore falling to eventual1-A champion Hender-sonville (a powerhouse inand of themselves). And in recent history, they’ve been to the statetitle game twice, with aneye on returning to Raleighin 2013. The elements are inplace for a reload. TheLady Tigers return all butone member from lastyear’s 17-0 SmokyMountain Championsquad. Nine seniors gracethe roster, with eight ofthose coming back withplaying experience, andthose are backed up by sev-eral junior standouts. Theyare led by SmokyMountain Conferencecoach-of-the-year AmandaMcCall.

Returning Players The Lady Tigers returntwo all-conference playersand three honorable men-tions for the 2013 season:seniors Morgan Sisk,Brooke Reese, JenahMcCall, Candace Petit andjunior Hannah Reese. Ofthe nine seniors on thesquad, four of them play

club volleyball year-round. Sisk, an all-conferencesenior outside hitter, led theteam in kills for her junioryear with 255. She wasalso second on the team indigs with 403, playingthroughout the rotation. She was voted a team cap-tain for 2013. “When she’s on, she’son,” McCall said. “We’reexpecting a lot out ofMorgan and for her to leadby example.” Reese, another seniorand all-conference selec-tion her junior year, anchors the defense at thelibero position. She had482 digs in 2012. “We just need Brooketo do what she’s alwaysdone, which is not let anyball hit our court and passto the target so we can runour offense,” McCall said.“We’re speeding up ouroffense this year, so herpassing will have to beeven better, and she’ll doit.” McCall, another sen-ior, earned honorable men-tion last year. She had 99blocks and was fourth onthe team in kills with 173. “She’s going to be ourgirl at the net,” McCallsaid. “She’s worked hard inthe offseason to be a betterblocker and to block itquick. She’s also hitting themess out of the ball rightnow.” Petit, a senior setterfor the Lady Tigers, washonorable mention as atriple threat for Rosman in2012. She put uprespectable numbers in

kills (78), digs (206) andassists (366). “Candace is going tobe our most consistentplayer and one that every-body else is going to feedoff of,” McCall said.“She’ll set the tempo of thegame, and as a captain willbe one of our leaders on thecourt.” The rest of the seniorclass bring a good mix ofplaying time and qualityminutes off the bench on adeep squad with 13 on theroster. Lauren Mahoney willhelp the defense. “Lauren has put a lotof hard work in and we’relooking forward to whatshe’s going to bring thisseason,” McCall said. Bethany Green willlook to contribute from theoutside hitter position. “Bethany is just agood kid to have around,”McCall said. “She’s alwayspositive, always trying toget her team up. She canturn the bad into good —she’s just got a great atti-tude.” Pam Kilpatrick returnsafter taking her junior sea-son off but came back withthe right attitude, accordingto the coach. “We’re excited to haveher back,” McCall added.“She’s consistent, andwe’re looking for bigthings out of her. She’slooked good so far.” Joining this group willbe junior Hannah Reese, anall conference honorablemention her sophomoreyear. She was brought up to

fill a critical void left in themiddle due to the injury ofBriana Galloway. Reese was second onthe team in kills with 231and third on the team indigs with 269. She also had23 solo blocks on the year.

High Expectations “Let’s start at thebeginning,” said McCall.“Our goal is to win confer-ence, undefeated, again, the conference tournament, and if this team wants it,they’ll bring home a statechampionship.” McCall said shelearned a valuable lesson inthe loss to the LadyBearcats last season, oneshe’s determined to rectifythis year. Her Lady Tigerswere unprepared for thespeed and skill set of theeventual state champions.Their first three opponentsin the 1-A playoffs wereweaker teams they’dalready beaten before, andthey had just two days toprepare for Hendersonville. “We don’t see fastteams with blocking,”McCall said. “AndHendersonville blockedevery time. They servedaggressively every time.We started preparing forthat from Aug. 1.” In addition to funda-

mentals, McCall and staffhave been drilling the LadyTigers on passing, ball-handling and controllingthe volleyball. The serve-receive is the cornerstoneon which a good offense isbuilt, leading up to a suc-cessful set and kill point. And all of that will have tobe done at a higher rate ofplay. To help with that,McCall designed a gauntletof opponents in lateSeptember and earlyOctober to prepare theLady Tigers. Those teamsinclude 3-A powerhousesEnka and West Henderson,as well as 2-A standoutsBrevard and Polk. “I told the girlsOctober was going to be arough month,” McCallsaid. “But if we’re playingthose teams two weeksbefore the state tourna-ment, we’re not going to beshell-shocked when we runinto a team likeHendersonville.” McCall also said thementality of practice haschanged. No longer willthe Lady Tigers let a ballhit the court without a try.Anyone who slacks offpunishes the entire teamwith sprints. Consequently, the defense is digging up

balls that used to result inpoints for the opponent.

Conference Outlook The Lady Tigersshould be the odds-onfavorite to win the SmokyMountain Conference yetagain. Swain will contend asone of the few teams totake Rosman to five gameslast season. Andrews isimproved, McCall said, and Robbinsville andMurphy will represent“scrappy” opponents. The junior varsitysquad will be looking forits eighth consecutive con-ference and tournamenttitle. “This jayvee teamlooks better than any I’veseen,” McCall said. “Theyhave really worked theirbutts off. They say ‘we’renot going to be the jayveeteam that drops thatstreak.’”

About The Coach McCall enters herthird year as head coach ofthe Lady Tigers, seventhoverall, serving under thetutelage of long-time headcoach Mildred Powell.McCall played at WesternCarolina University and forEast Henderson HighSchool.

The Lady Blue Devilspicked an apt slogan forthis year’s volleyball sea-son: “It’s Now or Never.” With six seniorsreturning on a squad thatwon the 2-A portion of theWNC Athletic Conferenceand advanced to the secondround of the state playoffs, expectations are high forthe 2013 season. Two ofthose returnees are all-con-ference selections from lastyear: Rachel Cassell andKjersti Anderson. Head coach JessicaMerrill expects a lot fromher players, and theyexpect a lot from them-selves, she said. “Expectations are justwhat people think,” Merrillsaid. “They have to go outand prove it. They have towalk the walk.”

Senior Leadership Cassell joins five otherseniors who are looking tomake a lasting mark on theLady Blue Devil historybooks this year: Laurenand Caitlin Murray,Kandace Kreigsman,Hunter Parrish and PeytonBailey. Cassell has been thestarting setter for Brevardfor the past three seasons.Last year, she put up 737assists, averaging nearlynine per game. She wasused extensively all overthe court in a 5-1 set byBrevard. This year, she willrotate out more as Merrillgoes to a 6-2 setup. Thathas more to do with the

depth and skill set ofCassell’s teammates thananything else. “Rachel has played avital role in the rebuildingof this program,” Merrillsaid. “She’s really been aleader. She’s really smart, has great hands and herdefense has reallyimproved this year.” The twins, Lauren andCaitlin Murray, are as hardto separate when talkingabout them as it is to tellthem apart on the court. Both are integral to theLady Blue Devils’ defen-sive success. “Lauren is more of aleft side defender, whileCaitlin is more of a middle-back defender,” Merrillsaid. “Both of them haveimproved each year, andthey are the hardest work-ing girls on my volleyballcourt. If you looked upteammate in the dictionary, you’d find their pictures.Their work ethic is unbe-lievable every day.” Kreigsman has thrivedas one of the Lady BlueDevils’ top offensiveweapons in spite of rotat-ing around the court in avariety of positions. Shestarted out as a middle hit-ter, moved to the right sideher junior year and willnow take up position in themiddle once again. She’salso one of the Lady BlueDevils who play nearlyyear-round in club volley-ball. “Kandace has really

gotten stronger this year, and smarter too. She seesthe court a lot better thanshe has in the past,” Merrillsaid. “Her blocking is spec-tacular.” Parrish, the teamlibero, provides a seniorspark and leadership roleall over campus, accordingto the head coach. “Hunter is another girlwho is the loudest personin the gym,” Merrill said.“She’s a leader on the courtand off the court and hasgladly stepped into thatrole. The girls look up toher for that special push.” Bailey offers a uniqueathleticism well-admiredby the coaching staff. She’suseful not only as a hitter, but also defensively as apasser and digger. “Peyton’s an all-around great athlete,”Merrill said. “She couldreally play any position weneed her to.”

A Deep Bench The rest of the LadyBlue Devils will be madeup of a relatively strongjunior class, a few standoutsophomores and one or twofreshmen thrown into themix, giving Merrill plentyof depth on the bench. Kjersti Andersonreturns for her junior yearafter posting all-conferencenumbers as a sophomore. She was second on theteam with 201 kills and 25blocks. She was also aleading defender with 420digs, good for tops on the

team. Gracie Carrick hit thecourt with a splash in herfreshman year, with 176kills and 76 blocks fromthe middle position. She’llrepresent the third leg of atowering front along withAnderson and Kreigsman. Freshman AshleyMcBee has stepped into astarting role on the varsitysquad, due in large part toher vertical leap and strongswing. She was a standouton the undefeated LadyBlue Devil middle schoolbasketball team last year. “We’ve got a strongjunior class and a lot ofdepth,” Merrill said. “Wedon’t have to worry somuch about rotations andfatigue this year. This yearwe’ve got more options.”

Conference Outlook The Lady Blue Devilsplay in one of the toughestvolleyball conferences inthe state, and Merrill likesthat. West Henderson is afavorite to go deep or win it

all each and every yearfrom the 3-A ranks. NorthHenderson is likewisetough, as well as Pisgahand even the SmokyMountains and Franklin. “It prepares us for thepostseason,” Merrill said ofthe top-level competition.“There really isn’t a team Ican say isn’t on our radar. “We can’t afford totake any nights off.Anything can happen, andthere’s nobody on theschedule we can take light-ly. “Smoky Mountain andEast Henderson — two ofthe lower-place teams inthe conference — twoyears ago we lost to thosetwo teams,” Merrill added. The Lady Blue Devilsseem to have their sightsset and focused on the ulti-mate goal — winning theconference and makingwaves in the playoffs. “If they keep that levelof aggressiveness and workethic, it will help them win

some ballgames,” Merrillsaid. “They’ve set specificgoals — not to just win, butto improve in every skillarea in each game.”

About The Coach Merrill enters her fifthyear as head coach of theLady Blue Devils. She wasa 2004 graduate of RosmanHigh School and a memberof its 2002 StateChampionship squad. Sheattended Brevard Collegeand was a two-sport athletethere, as well, splittingtime on the volleyball courtand basketball team. Corey Emory returnsas junior varsity coachafter leading the Lady BlueDevil jayvee squad to a 15-3 overall record, 9-1 leaguemark. They defeated WestHenderson 3-1 on Oct. 4.They also defeated a top-ranked Rosman JV team. Mary Ramey, a long-time fixture at Rosman, returns to assist.

It’s a new dawn and anew day for Brevard HighSchool football. Just ninemonths after the only win-less season in school histo-ry, the Blue Devils turn thepage with a new skipper, anew philosophy and a newplaybook. First-year head coachJason Lippard, hired inFebruary after an exhaus-tive search, has been goinggangbusters over the sec-ond half of the last schoolyear. He’s beaten the bush-es, trolled the halls andgripped the hands of hun-dreds of BHS students todrum up support for theprogram. The question that’sbeen on everybody’s lipssince the close of last season, when the BlueDevils dressed less than 25players, is how many willcome out for a new coach? The answer is morethan 90. As of Aug. 1, thefirst official day of prac-tice, varsity and junior var-sity combined have seenmore than 80 players.Lippard expects to carry atleast 37 on the varsity ros-ter and dress 45 on Fridaynights. Forty-plus willdress for jayvee games onThursdays. “One of the goals I setfor myself was to get out ofthe field house,” Lippardsaid. “I spent every day inthe lunchroom talking tokids. Have you ever playedfootball? Would you con-sider playing football?” Lippard was also aregular fixture at winterbasketball games andspring baseball games, angling for those athletes. “They want to believethey’re special and impor-

tant,” Lippard added oftoday’s children. Additionally, Lippardplans to keep as many play-ers as are willing to remainon the team, whether theystart every game or becomean integral part of practice. “We’re not going toturn anybody away,”Lippard said. “They’reinvolved. They feel likethey’re part of something.”

Xs And Os The first thing BlueDevil faithful will noticewhen Brevard takes thefield is a new offensive set. “We run a spread, nohuddle, hurry-up offense,”Lippard said. “We threwthe ball 323 times last year— 40 or more times pergame.” The last two years,Lippard’s quarterbackthrew for a combined 5,000yards and 50 touchdowns. “People have told me‘you can’t run that — youdon’t have any speed,’”Lippard said. “But last yearwith our Wing-T, we set sixoffensive records, and ourteam beat a team theynever had before.” The Blue Devils havespent most of their workouttime this summer learningto move quickly. A normalteam will run 50 plays pergame. Lippard wantsBrevard to run 75 and snapthe ball every 12 seconds. “And that’s real time, not game time,” Lippardsaid. “We want to forceteams to play at an uncom-fortable pace, and theycan’t do that for long with-out making errors.” On defense, the BlueDevils will sport a 3-5-3scheme. “One of our focal

points through mini-camphas been learning the newdefense and learning thenew offense, getting themto understand that if you’regoing to play fast, you haveto practice fast,” Lippardsaid. Lippard believes that afast-paced, throwing-ori-ented game fits the mindsetof today’s teams. “Kids love to throwand catch the football,”Lippard said. “And we’regoing to be throwing theball around all night. Go toany pickup game inAmerica and that’s whatyou’re going to see. Whenthey play Madden at home, nobody plays as GeorgiaTech. “If they’re not going tohave fun doing it, they’renot going to do it.”

Benefits Of Numbers With such big num-bers, Lippard plans to havelinemen dedicated tooffense or defense. Theywill two-platoon at the bigspots, with a solid corps ofmainly sophomores, jun-iors and seniors. The onlyplayers going on both sidesof the ball may be some ofthe “skill positions.” Awide receiver may playdefensive back and viceversa. The Blue Devils willcombine practices amongthe varsity and jayveesquads. One half of thepractice, varsity will go onoffense while jayvees getreps on defense. They thenswitch roles halfwaythrough. Another change play-ers will notice is in thecoaching staff. No longerwill junior varsity becoached by a different

squad. Lippard will callplays for both teams andboth teams will have thesame assistant coaches. “I want them to havethe same coach all fouryears,” Lippard said. “Wewant them to feel as impor-tant as anybody else. Whynot give them the sameattention that we give var-sity players?”

Senior Corps The Blue Devils willsuit up 10 seniors, includ-ing several transfers, giv-ing Lippard an experiencedcore of players, led by run-ning back AnthonyBenjamin, the Blue Devils’leading rusher last year.

He will be joined onthe front line by centerCharles Creaseman. JoeTrufant and Trey Keysorwill take turns at widereceiver, with an athleticChase Brooks stepping intoa role somewhere, Lippardsaid. The defense will beled by a trio of linebackers:Mikel Minugh, MaddoxJamerson and DavidShelton. A pair of defen-sive ends, Elijah Shook andIsaiah Landreth, willanchor the defensive line. The sole senior on theoffensive line is CalebOwenby, who will anchor agroup of sophomores and

juniors on the front. “Our offensive lineshould be good for the nextcouple of years,” Lippardsaid.

Conference Outlook One of the first thingsLippard did in the BlueDevils’ field house was listthis year’s schedule. Andbeside each team’s name,he put their 2012 record.Mitchell was 1-10, theirsole win coming atBrevard’s expense. That’s atrend Lippard aims atreversing, but the WNCAthletic Conference is atough league in which towin, he admits. “In all my years

We salute your hard workand dedication to the team.Keep up the great work!

Best of luck to theBrevard and RosmanTeams!

coaching in the mountains, this is the who’s who ofhigh school football —Pisgah, Tuscola, Brevard— traditional mountainpowers as well as someJohnny-come-latelies,”Lippard said. East Henderson andFranklin are coming alongand even traditional base-ment dwellers like NorthHenderson and SmokyMountain are showingimprovement. The non-conferenceportion of the Blue Devils’schedule has changed for2013, as Brevard droppedPolk and picked upRosman and Cherokee. That will give the BlueDevils a fighting chance, asthey are one of the smallest2-A schools in the state.

Coaching Staff Shane Worley hasbeen named defensivecoordinator for Lippard’ssquad, joining MichaelJordan in coaching thelinebacker corps. John McDaris and

Cody Ashe will coach theoffensive line, whileVernon Bryson andWilliam Hemphill willcoach the defensive front. Jake Raines andDwayne Norman willcoach inside and outsidereceivers, respectively, while newcomer RedBrown will coach the run-ning backs. Defensivebacks will be coached bySutherland and WesleyWhitman. Lippard will coach thequarterbacks. Former WCU strengthconditioning coach MilesChristian has comeonboard to put the BlueDevils through theirweight-lifting regimen —an effort not lost on thehead coach. “He’s busted their tailsin the weight room thisyear,” Lippard said.“That’s where it’s at andthat’s where the work willend up paying off.”About The Head Coach

Lippard came to

“Hard work.” That is the frequentrepetitive phrase fromRosman head coach

Freddie Whitman’s mouthwhenever he’s talkingabout his Tiger footballteam.

He took over a winlesssquad three years ago andforged last season’s 7-7team into a third-round

appearance in the 1-A stateplayoffs and coached theteam to its first .500 seasonin more than a decade. Most of that success,Whitman will tell you, isdue to the boys’ hard workin the offseason and in theweight room. Sophomorequarterback Josh Rice anda trio of seniors — AustinAnders, Coleman Davesand Caleb Perry — mademore workouts than any oftheir teammates this year,Whitman said. The rest of the team isready and raring as well,Whitman added. “We’ve had two reallygood practices. The kidsare playing hard, andthey’ve got great attitudes. We’ve got no sorry atti-tudes on the team,”Whitman said. “They havereally busted their tails, andthey’re doing a good job.” In spite of the 2012team’s 7-7 record,Whitman knows there isplenty of room forimprovement. He has hissights set much, much

higher. “We don’t want to falloff. We want to build everyday,” Whitman said.

Returning Seniors Whitman and Tigerfaithful will enjoy thereturn of a solid offensiveline, missing but one grad-uate from last year’s team.Eight seniors currentlygrace the roster, seven ofthose are on the O-Line. “Our strength is in ouroffensive line,” Whitmansaid. “Last season, weaveraged almost 300 yardsrushing per game.” Stetson Cauble returnsat guard, along with tacklesPerry and Daves. Tightends Lane Whitmire, JoshDiaz and Trey Brownreturn for their senioryears. They will be joinedby Austin Anders at run-ning back and KerryHolden at split-end, anddefensive back and runningback. “The biggest thing thisyear is our lineman campput us ahead of where wewere last year,” Whitman

said. “Coach Galloway dida real good job with them. That makes it easier as ahead coach.” Daves, a 6-7, 300-pluspounder, is one of thebiggest linemen in westernNorth Carolina. He hasworked “extremely hard”during the offseason, according to Whitman. “Cauble is as good asany lineman in westernNorth Carolina,” Whitmanadded. “He runs a 4.7 40and has good feet.” D’Artagnan Hardingand Aaron Newman willalso join the linemen, giv-ing the Tigers plenty ofdepth. Anders will see plentyof handoffs as one of theTigers’ running backs. “Austin has workedreally yard in the weightroom,” Whitman said.“He’s 190 pounds andlooks like a running back.” Anders will be joinedby 190-pound sophomoreTanner Green, Greg Orrand Landon Shipman, a200-plus pound fullback.

“Landon’s extremelystrong. He squats 400pounds and runs the ballhard,” Whitman said. The defensive front islikewise experienced, withCauble, Newman, Daves,Perry and Shipman on theline. The linebacker corpswill see the return of lead-ing tackler Diaz at the out-side spot. Anders, Hall andBrown will join him thereas the main run-stoppers. “Our secondary isreally young,” Whitmansaid. “But they’re really, really, really picking it up.They’re really pushing it.”

Conference Outlook As per usual inarguably the top 1-A foot-

ball conference in the state, the two biggest schoolswill again vie for the topspot: Murphy and Swain(both finished second intheir respective classifica-tions in 2012). Robbinsville is nearlyalways in contention, witha re-emergent Rosmanteam thrown into the mix. “A lot of folks have uspicked fifth (behindHayesville),” Whitmansaid. “But I’d put us in thethick of things.”

About The Coach Whitman enters hisfourth season as headcoach of the Tigers but is afixture on the Rosmansidelines, serving for more

than 20 years alongsideJim Fox as the defensivecoordinator. The Tigers are comingoff one of their most suc-cessful seasons in recentmemory, advancing to thethird round of the 1-A play-offs, where they lost toeventual state 1-A runnerup Murphy. A graduate of MarsHill College, Whitmanplayed for the Tigers from1982-1984, when Rosmanreached the semi-finalsthree years in a row and thefinals one of those years. He has coached baseballfor 15 years, wrestling forthree years and did a stintas a basketball coach.

Expectations are highfor the perennially power-ful Lady Blue Devil tennisteam, set to begin the 2013season reloaded from adeep run in last year’s play-offs. “We’ve got a coregroup of juniors and sen-iors, with a couple of trans-fers coming in, that shouldhelp us out,” said headcoach Mike Vandegrift.“We’re hoping to have thesame quality of team,depth-wise, that we’vehad.” Brevard returns a pairof state champions inTaylor Snowdon andEmma McLeod, who tookthe doubles title in 2012.

They will be joined by sen-ior Allie Williams and jun-ior Kathleen Elliott, both ofwhom saw plenty of play-ing time last year. “Taylor and Emmawon the state doubleschampionship last year,”Vandegrift said. “Their biggoal this year is to win itagain. That’s a tall order. They were our first doubleschampions, which is evenharder than singles, sinceyou have to have two reallygood players. “But they beat the topfour from Salisbury, wholost their number-one andnumber-three players.” The strength in the restof Brevard’s line-up can be

summed up in two words:Golden Matches. Four dif-ferent Lady Blue Devilswon matches last yearwithout giving up a singlepoint. McLeod took the firstone against EastHenderson’s number-twosingles player. She was fol-lowed by the doubles teamof Allie Williams and AnnaFuller. Kathleen Elliottthen won a golden match atnumber-five singles. “I’ve never even seenone golden match, andthat’s in 40-some years oftennis,” Vandegrift said.“And these girls did it threetimes. That’s not making asingle mistake, out-of-

bounds shot, hit into the netor double-fault serve. EvenRoger Federer, when hebeats people 6-0, 6-0,makes mistakes.” A pair of junior trans-fers — Ava Loftis andVictoria Roberts — shouldcompete for a spot in thetop six. “They’ll have to provethemselves on this team,”Vandegrift said. The girls, most ofwhom are friends off thecourt, are in the midst ofchallenge tournaments toestablish the ranking order.Last year’s number-onesingles player, Hunter Hall, graduated and will play forUNC-Asheville this year. Brevard lost in thesemifinals to eventualdefending state 2-A cham-pion Salisbury.Conference Outlook And

Schedule Brevard should againbe the heavy favorite towin yet another WNCAthletic Conferencecrown. In Vandegrift’s 14years as head coach, he’sonly seen them give up oneleague title. Three-A West Hender-son should compete for the

number-two spot,Vandegrift added. In the meantime, heplans to forge the LadyBlue Devils into a tennisforce with a top-notch non-conference schedule. Theywill play private schoolAsheville twice, 4-A T.C.Roberson once, and formertennis power AshevilleHigh School before

embarking on their confer-ence schedule Aug. 26against Franklin.

About The Coach Vandegrift begins his14th season with the LadyBlue Devils, guiding themto the state semifinals lastyear and 13 conferencechampionships. He is theowner of the BrevardTennis and Athletic Club.

In a pouring rain oneTuesday evening, asoaked-to-the-skin BlueDevil soccer team gamelyran through drills under thewatchful eye of the equallywet new head coach ChrisBennett. It will be that level ofskill — and especiallydetermination —  that willenable the Blue Devils tosucceed on the soccer field

in 2013. Bennett, already a fix-ture within the junior varsi-ty ranks, inherited a varsityprogram approaching thehistoric heights of 2005-06.Bennett is taking over theboys’ program from con-ference coach-of-the-yearErik Wahus. But Bennett is evengoing to draw inspirationfrom Dale Hagedorn’s

tenure, tearing a page fromhis playbook, whichfocused on a style that sawsuccess several years ago:quick touch-passes, accura-cy and forward thinking. “Some people call ittiki-taka,” Bennett said.“There will be lots ofsmall, short, quick passeswith lots of touches. Andthat’s what these kids needto be learning at their age.

That’s the focus of socceraround the world.” Bennett and jayveecoach Gordon Murray areworking with small groupsof boys to drill that conceptinto their heads. They wantthe Blue Devils to think notabout the next pass, but thethird, fourth and even fifth. “They always need tobe looking for space —play the ball to an empty

space,” Bennett said.

Returnees The Blue Devils return15 players and three new-comers to a team that went15-6-1 in 2012 and madethe third round of the state2-A playoffs. Brevard fell2-0 to a 19-2-1 SouthIredell squad. The Blue Devils returnfive defenders, led by all

conference goalie DanielTaylor, who had 115 savesand 18 goals allowed onthe season. “There’s so much youcould say about Daniel,”Bennett said. “He’s ournumber-one goalie forsure. He’s got the mostexperience, and he is fear-less. He’s probably themost confident player ofanyone on the field.”

Ben Lance, DrewChapin, Garrett Rhodesand Paul Nemeth return toanchor a stingy Blue Devildefense that had sevenshutouts in 2012. “Lance is a vocal andhard-nosed player,”Bennett said. “He’s beenbattling injury, but we’relooking for him to find aspot on the defense. Chapin has been adefender for the headcoach his entire highschool career. “Chapin, again, isanother extremely confi-dent, direct player,”Bennett said. “He sets anexcellent pace and isextremely cool-headed, yetphysical, which is a goodthing to have in a defend-er.” Bennett expectsRhodes to be one of theBlue Devils’ leading tack-lers in 2013. “Garrett will be one ofmy key players [ondefense],” Bennett said.“He’s got excellent organi-zation and keeps his team-mates organized on thefield.” Nemeth is a familiarname around Brevard, partof a large Blue Devil soc-cer family. “Paul is anotherextremely physical playerwho is very light on hisfeet,” Bennett said. “He’sgot a wild technique, butsomehow, it works. He’salso got great endurancefor a big guy and makesgood decisions as adefender.” A trio of forwards willreturn for their senior cam-paigns: Blake Philips, JohnMiller and Wesley Benson. Phillips returns for hissenior season after missinghis junior year. He’s comeback with a renewed senseof determination. “Blake’s got a fire inhis belly,” Bennett said.“He went out and made it

onto the HFC [HighlandsFootball Club] team, andnow he’s back with ushere.” Bennett describesMiller as ‘the strong, silenttype.’ He came in as asophomore and earned hisway onto the field. “Miller is anotherphysical player who is alsovery strong,” Bennett said.“He’s extremely coach-able. One of the greatthings about him, so far, ishis good decisions. He’salso got a killer powershot.” Benson also took ayear off but has come backfor his final high schoolyear. “We’re excited to havehim back,” Bennett said.“He’s also got a killerpower shot and momentsthat come out of nowherethat definitely surpriseme.” Tucker Baney returnsfor the 2013 season at amidfielder spot.

“Tucker is extremelyfast and extremely tactical-ly aware and on point,”Bennett said. “He’s gotquick feet off the ball andalways in the right place atthe right time.” Newcomer BrandonZesseren jumped at thechance to play for Brevardhis senior year. Despite hisinexperience, the BlueDevils have welcomed himinto the fold. “Brandon’s not afraidto get in there and mix itup,” Bennett said. “Irespect him for coming outand going for it. He’s notshying away. He’s just put-ting in the work.”

Conference Outlook AndSchedule

The Blue Devils playin the split 2-A/3-A WNCAthletic Conference, homeof some traditional soccerpowers. Bennett said East

Henderson is likely theodds-on favorite to win theconference. He also likesthe organization at SmokyMountain. West and NorthHenderson should alsomake waves. Where Brevard fallsinto the mix is somethingof a mystery for the first-year head coach. “As jayvees, thisgroup went 7-2-5,”Bennett said. “The twolosses were to North andEast Henderson, and theteam went over there andtied them.” To get the Blue Devilsready for the stiff leaguecompetition, as well as theplayoffs, Bennett hasdesigned a “baptism byfire” of traditional soccerpowers. Brevard will start theyear with five dates: A.C.Reynolds (twice), T.C.Roberson, Enka and 3-Apowerhouse AshevilleHigh. The Blue Devils willkick off the home seasonSept. 9 against Franklin.

About The Coach

Bennett graduatedfrom Brevard High Schoolin 2003 as part of a BlueDevils squad that won theconference championshipfor the first time in schoolhistory. He played for fouryears at St. AndrewsPresbyterian before return-ing home to begin hiscoaching career. Bennett has been thedirector of coaching foryouth soccer and thejayvee coach since 2010.That job has been takenover by Murray. “I would pay him whatthey pay me,” Bennett saidof Murray. “He’s the bestassistant anyone could everhave. He just makes mylife so much easier.”

It’s no longer a ques-tion of “if,” but “when” theBrevard High School girls’cross country teamadvances once again to thestate meet in Kernersville. The Lady Blue Devilsbroke an uncharacteristicdrought in dramatic fash-ion last season at theWestern Regional Finals, putting five in the top 28 tofinish third overall.Several of the girls turnedin personal records, and, best of all, the majority ofthose runners return, infused with champi-onship-quality middleschoolers. That all adds up towhat head girls coachJackie Witherspoon hopeswill be a return to the normfor Brevard, which hasbeen one of the top 2-Aschools in the WesternRegion for years. Last yearthey battled a resurgentPisgah squad, watchingthem from behind for mostof the year, before passingthem in Morganton in thenext-to-last meet of theyear.

“After a four-yeardrought of not qualifyingfor state, we finished 8thout of 16, which I wasquite proud of,”Witherspoon said. This year the LadyBlue Devils will be helpedalong by the departure oftwo of their archrivals atthe 2-A level. Pisgah joinsthe 3-A ranks of the WNCAthletic Conference, whileanother regional qualifierand state title contenderlikewise gets realigned. “After finishingfourth at conferencebehind two 3-A schoolsand two 2-A schools, wewent on to run exception-ally well at regionals andplaced third behind NorthLincoln and SmokyMountain,” Witherspoonsaid. “This year NorthLincoln moves up to 3-A,which will leave open aspot that they have occu-pied for years.”

Expectations AndReturning Runners

Witherspoon has thesame high expectations forthis year’s squad, which

still boasts young and up-and-coming runners. “With the crew wehave returning, and if wecan stay healthy, particu-larly because we have nodepth, we should be ableto qualify for state and bet-ter last year’s place signif-icantly,” Witherspoonsaid. “But it is all aboutthese girls staying healthyand uninjured that reallywill determinethings.   And to see howwell they can come togeth-er as a team.” Returning to lead theteam once again is juniorAly Pagano, who finishedthird overall in regionalswith a time of 20:28.5. Shebettered that time at statewith a personal record of19:54. “That bodes well forthis season,” Witherspoonsaid. “My hope and expec-tation is that she will runthis fast early in the seasonas she has had her first realsummer of consistenttraining.   Aly is bothstrong and fast. She hasbeen an integral part of our

summer training, commu-nicating with teammatesand scheduling runs.” Catherine Lemel alsoturned in a personal recordat the state meet, extend-ing her season by runningindoor track. “Catherine gained agreat deal of fitness andwas only slowed down abit when she had appen-dectomy surgery,”Witherspoon said.“Catherine has maturedgreatly as both a distancerunner, as well as a teamleader.” Amy Borhaug turnedin state qualifying times inthree different races in2012, consistently finish-ing fourth on the talentedteam. “She always finisheda race giving all she had,”Witherspoon said. “Suchperseverance and mentaltoughness guarantee thatAmy will put together afantastic season, I have nodoubt.” Bonnie Smith brokeinto the top five last yearand held on tenaciously to

that spot. Witherspoonlooks for more of the samein 2013. “She seems to enjoyracing more than training, and I have to rememberthis as I coach her day-to-day,” Witherspoon said.“Pressure positivelyaffects her. If Bonnie canstep it up as she did lastyear, there’s no limit towhat our team can accom-plish.” Maggie Dodsonreturns for her third seasonof cross-country, splittingtime with the BHS march-ing band. “She, too, put in moremiles this summer than sheever has,” Witherspoonsaid. “So, I believe a PR iscertain.”

Newcomers Witherspoon will alsoenjoy an infusion of newvarsity cross country run-ners, led by her daughter,Eliza, who was undefeatedas an eighth grader. TheLady Blue Devils will alsosee newcomers AshleyRoof, Michaela Lenz andYaaqoa Ivey.

Roof was a runnerwith the middle schoolteam, while Ivey andLenze come in as a sopho-more and junior, respec-tively. “We are hopeful thatanother girl or two willjoin us this season,”Witherspoon said. “Wehave a group of serious(but fun) student-athleteswho train hard and getresults. These girls aredoing it all too, so don’tthink a job or hard courseload should prevent onefrom running.   “These are the girlswho are working beforeschool, on weekends, allwhile taking the toughestclasses and training at avery high level.   Theywould agree with me thatthe discipline it takes torun cross country makesthem better students. “With this group ofgirls, my job is prettygreat. They’re very confi-dent and verycoachable.   I’m lookingforward to all the seasonbrings!”
