What a great first couple of months it’s been getting settled into the Community Recreation Coordinator position at The W. I’ve been impressed by, not only the first-class facilities, but also by the type of people I’m privileged to work with and serve each day I come to work. There really is a place for everyone at The W.

Having grown up in the nearby town of Ackley, and with my wife, Allison, being a 2001 Wartburg graduate, we felt blessed to have the opportunity to move to Waverly and become a part of this outstanding community. We’ve also enjoyed the wide range of programs and opportunities there are for all ages at The W. Our three young children have already participated in tennis and swimming lessons, and Allison has enjoyed being able to work out while the kids have fun playing at The W’s child care.

As a former elementary and high school physical educator, I’m passionate about the importance of developing lifelong healthy habits. I’ve seen firsthand the need for all of us, no matter what the age, to find fun, enjoyable ways to get moving and take care of our bodies. Make sure to visit www.the-w.org and check out all the fall and winter offerings we have that best fit the interests of you and your family. You can register online for programs as well. There really is a place for everyone at The W!

I look forward to seeing you around the facility.

Sincerely,

Doug FrazellCommunity Recreation Coordinator

New Health and Wellness ProgramsSurvivor careAccording to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.3 million Americans will be diagnosed this year with cancer, the nation’s second-leading killer. The Survivor Care program will provide exercise for cancer patients usingminimal strength conditioning, combined with flexibility training and low-impact aerobic exercise. Depending onchemotherapy or radiation schedules, each patient’s workout may include daily walks, use of rubber tubing forresistance training, fitness balls, or dumbbells. Classes can vary in length and structure and will be personalized.

Heart HappyThe No. 1 killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association.More than 60 million Americans are recovering from a stroke or heart failure, or suffer from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, or other circulatory diseases. Depending on a cardiac patient’s specificsituation, Heart Happy can assist with the bridge from the clinical setting to mainstream workouts. Research showsthat strength workouts help patients increase stamina for daily routines and reduce day-to-day demands on theheart.

Wheel of LifeSpending long hours in a wheelchair can be uncomfortable and lead to uneasiness. Keeping the body moving asmuch as possible in a wheelchair should be a regular part of a daily fitness program. Regular wheelchair exercise willhelp increase strength and flexibility, improve mobility, strengthen the heart and lungs, and help control weight.Workouts are tailored to each patient’s individual situation.

For details on any of these new programs, contact Dawn Wiegmann, RN, at 319-352-8437 [email protected]. Documentation from a physician is required prior to beginning any of theabove programs.
