Pruning back orna-mental grasses, gettingpatio containers ready forplanting, and startingdahlias indoors are someof the gardening activitiesfor this month.
If you left your orna-mental grasses intact lastfall for their fall and win-ter effect, and for seedsfor birds, you can goahead and prune themback to a height of about6 to 12 inches. If you re-move the old growth be-fore new growth starts,and don’t cut back tooclose to the ground, youwon’t risk damaging newsprouts when theyemerge with warm weath-er later in spring. Addprunings to the compostpile, but the thick stemsof some grasses shouldbe shredded or cut upfirst so they’ll decomposemore quickly.
When planting largecontainers for the deck orpatio, save on soil by cre-ating a false bottom. Mostof the plants you’ll usedon’t need more thanabout a foot of soil depthfor their roots, so putsome empty plastic sodaor water bottles in thevery bottom, then cover
with landscape fabric or apiece of cardboard cut tofit to keep the soil fromeroding. Plastic potsturned upside down alsowork, as do coarse andinexpensive wood shav-ings. Some use those Sty-rofoam packing “peanuts”(put in plastic bags sothey’re easily handledand contained).
To control annualweeds in the lawn, spreadcorn gluten meal withyour lawn spreader whenforsythia are blooming.That’s when many weedseeds, such as crabgrass,are germinating. It’s asafe, organic option forpreventing the germina-tion of weeds, and it pro-vides a small dose (maybe9 percent) of nitrogen fer-tilizer. The best controlsfor weeds, however, re-main a good soil con-ducive to growing grass,and proper lawn culture.
While safe and environ-mentally friendly, corngluten products can beexpensive with such a de-mand now for corn-de-rived products from cornsyrup to ethanol. A 20 to25 pound bag, dependingon product, may treat1000 square feet of lawnor beds, and cost around$30. This means to treata quarter acre lawn, youmay need to spend $300
or so. Like all “pre-emer-gent” weed killers, corngluten will keep seedsfrom germinating. Somake sure any desirableflowers or vegetables havegerminated, and have“true” leaves, before ap-plying around them.
Get flowers sooner ondahlias by potting up tu-bers and growing themindoors until it’s warmenough to plant themoutside. Pinch the grow-ing tips when they get 6
inches tall to keep thegrowth short and stockyfor easier transplantinginto the garden. Keepthem in a cool place,such as garage, so theydon’t grow too fast.
To get a head-start onfresh greens, sow seedsin a large, shallow con-tainer. Keep the containeroutside during the dayand bring it in at night ifthe temperatures dip be-low freezing, or protect itin a cold frame. A window
box with colorful greensis not only ornamental,but makes for easy pick-ing and protection fromhungry rabbits.
Woody perennials differin the way they should becut back in spring. If but-terfly bush has died tothe ground, cut the deadstems to the ground. Oth-erwise just shorten themby about one third. Cutback Russian sage, rue,and artemisias to about 8to 12 inches from the
ground. Don’t prunelavender until newgrowth appears, and thenjust shorten the stems byabout one-third. Heathershould be lightly prunedto remove the old flowersand the tips of theshoots, but don’t cutback to brown wood, stayin the green. Wait untilrose shoots and leavesemerge to prune, in orderto know what stems diedand which are living.

Have you seen your first robin of the
season? Who needs a calendar to know
when springtime weather is just around
the corner? We country folks have our
own way of knowing.
For example, the Parkside Restaurant
in St. Johnsville is already open. As you
know, Parkside is one of the favorite
watering holes and they are open seven
days each week. This year, they are
offering some new specials.
Grandma, along with Gramps, is still
digging Granny’s roadside eatery out
from under the winter snow. They may
be open before you read this. If you can’t
wait, bring a snow shovel and a strong
back. If they are not open, I will buy you
all the soft ice cream you can eat and
none after they open.
Maybe I should explain why I will not
buy you soft ice cream at Granny’s. This
Hello Again column is now read in over

over 70,000 ice cream eaters. I may be
slow but am neither rich or Santa — as
you know he drives a big red cattle truck
during the warm weather season.
We have not poked fun at the clergy or
church-goers in several months, so it
must be their turn. I believe even the
good Lord enjoys a harmless joke once in
a while.
This little bit of chatter was told to
me as true. The former owner of the
Daniel Green Slipper Company in
Dolgeville enjoyed his summers at his
camp near Otsego Lake, played golf at
the Ryerson-Otsego golf course, and
attended church in Cooperstown. A fel-
low golfer — known to all as Coach —
also played golf and ushered at the
same church. So that you will better
understand this chatter, while Coach
was a good golfer and a grand guy, he
was also quite deaf. One Sunday while
ushering and passing the collection
basket, he handed the basket to our
Dolgeville friend. Due to his deafness —
he did not realize how loud his voice was
and with the church in near silence — he
said in a loud voice, “You can do better
than that.” You can take bets that
everyone present knew they both were in
church that day. It may be the best
homily ever remembered.
In keeping with our church collection
basket chatter, it was told that a little
tot along with his Dad watched while
the ushers were passing the collection
plates. When the usher stopped at the
little fellow’s pew, in a rather loud voice
said, “Don’t pay for me Daddy. I’m under
five.”
So we think we are a better educated,
more advanced society with more and
better benefits than those of yester
years? I have a photocopy of an envelope
mailed by the war department to
Charles Walter Vosburgh of Palatine
Bridge, NY dated April 18, 1919. The paid
postage was one cent. Citizens could
mail a 1st class letter for one penny and
now we have to pay nearly a half buck.
Are we advancing backwards?
In the issue of February 16, 2013 we
published a list of the men and women
from this area who served our country in
the so-called war to end all wars: the
World War.
Charles R. Vosburgh of Palatine Bridge
graciously allowed us to copy the honor-
able discharge papers of his grandfa-
ther, a World War I veteran. I believe his
father was the Montgomery County
sheriff.
One good deed deserves another. If
you are in the market to buy hay or
straw, give Mr. Vosburgh a call: 518-
993-3749. I’m sure he will be able to
help.
I found it very interesting to learn
that the Vosburgh family name and the
Nellis family branched from a common
tree, or at least had common ances-
tors. It would be an interesting study to
learn of the connections of the families
living in the Mohawk Valley. For example,
who was related to whom? In my case,
our family history in America is basical-
ly only four generations old. We love
America but we are as Irish as Paddy’s
pig.
Wouldn’t it be interesting to learn the
family names now living in our valley?
Whose family name was part of our list
of those who served in the first World
War, second World War, and even the Civil
War?
This yarn is proof that it’s tough to
beat apple pie. It seems that a Sunday
School teacher was teaching her young
class about heaven and hell. She said,
“All of you students who want to go to
Heaven say ‘I’.” Little Johnny Alone was
mute. When his teacher asked, “Johnny,
don’t you want to go to Heaven?” he
said, “When Grandpa drove me to
Sunday School this morning, Mom was
baking a couple of apple pies.”
This afternoon while writing Hello
Again, I had an interesting visit with a
lady who says she has used her body as
a human guinea pig/laboratory to study
the affects of food as it pertains to her
own health. She said she is 72 but in my
opinion she talks, thinks, walks as a 30
year old.
I should have asked her — “If some
food does not seem to agree with you
— is your body trying to warn you?
Could it be causing more damage than
you ever imagined? For example, one of
my favorite dressings for a meat
sandwich is mayo. My stomach has a
continuing argument with mayo. Is it
possible that it is causing some serious
problem unknown to me?”
Sunday to Christians will be the most
important day of the year. The Bible
teachers and I believe the day we call
Easter, Jesus willingly obeyed God the
Father, allowed his earthly human body
to surrender to death on the cross so
that we who believe will be forgiven of our
sins, and will enjoy eternal life with him.
Naturally this is a personal decision
one must make — to believe in Christ or
not. I do not suggest you have to — I
just wish you would.
Watch for the little red bike — when
the robins come back, so will the bike —

Perhaps you have prop-erty with some old appletrees, or perhaps you hada fruit tree orchard thathas suffered from yearsof neglect due to otherpriorities. You’re facedwith a decision if youwant to make changes —should you get out achainsaw or hire a treeservice for such re-movals, or should you tryand save the trees? If thelatter, how should youbegin? If you want to ren-ovate an orchard, first as-sess which (if any) treesare worth saving. Followa few simple pruningpractices slowly over afew years to reclaim de-sirable trees.
When deciding whichfruit trees to save in aneglected orchard, keepin mind that a smallnumber of well-cared-fortrees will be far more pro-ductive and much moresatisfying than a large or-chard of even partiallyneglected ones. Thosewith good tasting fruit(even if small) are candi-dates to save. Theirtrunks should be solid
and firm, not hollow onthe inside, nor fallingapart. A worthy tree tosave should have onetrunk, not multiple onesgrowing in clumps (usu-ally arising from “suck-ers” or offshoots of theoriginal trunk, whichmay have died).
If trees are evenlyspaced apart, they werelikely those planted andnot seedlings that cameup randomly. A few suchtrees from seedlings maybe worth saving if theyhave good fruit or are or-namental. Trees worthrenovating should have agood branching struc-ture, with good lowerbranching, and of a goodheight and habit. Thoseeither too tall (over 18 to20 feet high) or short, orlopsided, or straggly (per-haps lower limbs werebrowsed off by animals),would be difficult to re-claim. Finally, consider ifthe trees are importanteither historically (theymay be antique or heir-loom cultivars seldomseen) or sentimentally (asin being planted by a rel-ative).
Once you’ve decidedwhich trees to work on
saving, follow these steps. 1. Remove unwanted
trees. These are ones thatbear no fruit or none de-sirable, are too close to-gether, are fromseedlings, are weak andjust too old, or are weedy— either fruiting or oth-
ers.2. Remove sprouts aris-
ing from the base of treesyou want to save. These
“water sprouts” will sapenergy the main treeneeds to regrow fromsubsequent pruning.
3. Burn or chip treeprunings to avoid keepingaround any diseases.
4. The first year, lightlyprune trees anytime, re-
moving broken, diseased,or rubbing and crossinglimbs. An old tree won’ttolerate severe pruning at
first, so start gently.Prune whole limbs off,don’t just “head back” orprune the ends. Removeany old fruit. Check thesoil pH or acidity (kits areavailable from your localExtension office andmany complete garden
centers). Correct, if need-ed, to 6.5 to 7. Fertilizelightly in spring as with100 pounds of dried ma-
nure spread evenly, orlightly with an organiccomplete fertilizer, or 5 to7 pounds of 5-10-10, orsimilar. Then, in earlysummer, thin fruit whenthe size of marbles sothat they are at least 6inches apart, and onlyone in a cluster. Mow ormulch around trees dur-ing summer. Remove any“drops” (those fruit thatfall off naturally in June,and during fall). Rakeleaves up in fall.
5. The second year,when trees are dormantbut temperatures abovefreezing, thin out somelimbs to allow more lightinto the center, removingwhole limbs. Removeweak or very old limbsfirst. Proceed with otherculture as in the firstyear.
6. The third year, prunesimilar to year two, onlymore heavily. Follow cul-ture as previously.
7. Finally, in subse-quent years, prune nor-mally with normal cul-ture. More details onsuch culture to grow ap-ples successfully can befound in the book TheFruit Gardener’s Bible.

Raspberries and black-berries are the two mostcommon bramble fruits— those shrubs with edi-ble berries, and generallywith thorns. Althoughfairly easy to grow, thereare a few cultural tipsand pruning techniqueswhich will help you toharvest not only a crop offruit, but a bountiful oneof beautiful berries.
If you’re just planting aberry patch, make sure tochoose cultivars (cultivat-ed varieties) hardy andsuited to your area. Thisis especially true if buy-ing online from distantnurseries, or you live in acolder part of the north.Many cultivars of red,and fall-bearing yellow,raspberries are hardythrough most of the northcountry. Be aware thatred raspberries generallybear one crop in mid-summer, but some thatare often called fall oreverbearing have twocrops — one in summerand one in fall. This isimportant in how they arecared for.
Black and purple rasp-
berries are generally lesshardy, so look for hardierselections such as ‘Bris-tol’ or ‘Jewel’ black rasp-berry, and ‘Brandywine’or ‘Royalty’ purple rasp-berry. Upright blackber-ries are generally thehardiest types, with thetrailing and thornlessones generally less hardy.Some of the hardiest toUSDA zone 5 (-10 to -20degrees F average mini-mum in winter) include‘Darrow’, ‘Illini’, and‘Kiowa’. ‘Chester’ and‘Triple Crown’ are some-what hardy, semi-uprightor trailing types.
Once you’ve chosenand obtained your bram-bles, plant in a well-drained soil in full sun.As they like to spread, al-low plenty of space anddon’t plant near flower orvegetable beds. Best is anarea where you can keeprows mowed. Amend thesoil with plenty of com-post prior to planting. Ifyou’re planting bare-rootplants, cut tops back to acouple inches above theground after planting. Ifplanting rooted plants inpots, don’t cut back.
Space plants 2-feetapart in rows (farther
apart for trailing black-berries). Rows should beabout 6-feet apart forraspberries, and perhaps10-feet apart for black-berries. Often trailingblackberries need crosspollination between culti-vars in order to fruit (sobuy more than one), butmost brambles are self-fertile and will producefruit just with the aid ofbees (so you can havejust one cultivar).
Water well for the firstfew weeks, if little rain,until plants are estab-lished. If you have fertilesoil you may only needcompost at planting.Testing the soil with kitsfrom your local Extensionoffice will yield results onhow much fertilizer andlime, if any, to add. Oth-erwise, use about 2 to 3pounds of a low analysis,organic fertilizer such as5-3-4 per 100 linear feetof row or a liquid fertilizerof your choice. Apply thisagain about a month af-ter planting. Mulch withan organic material suchas wood chips, straw, orshredded bark.
In spring of the secondyear for raspberries, cutback to a couple inches
high all plants that didn’tgrow vigorously the firstyear. This encouragesmaximum cane growthfor a big crop the follow-ing year. Add to themulch, and apply fertiliz-er as in year one. Fertilizetwo-crop cultivars againin mid-summer. Then, infall of year two, cut topsof plants back so canesare about 4 feet tall. Thismakes a stiff plant thatdoesn’t fall over in win-ter’s snow and wind. In-stall a fence or other sup-port if you didn’t already.This can be as simple astwo strands of smoothwire on each side of therow between stakes, tokeep future canes fromfalling over.
In spring of futureyears, add fertilizer andmulch, as last year, toyour raspberries. Trimout any broken canes.Spray with a fungicideaccording to label direc-tions if you spot any evi-dence of spur blight, andreapply if needed in earlysummer. If young beauti-ful leaves in spring sud-denly turn yellow, andthe canes die, this is like-ly spur blight.
During summer, keepplants watered if insuffi-cient rain during the 3 to 4
weeks prior to harvest. Re-move any wilted tipswhich are likely from thecane borer, a commonpest. Cut off just below thetwo circles you see on thecane near the tip whereyou’ll often find the larvaeinside, living and dining.
Another common peston this and other mem-bers of the rose family insummer is the Japanesebeetle. Simply knock offinto a pail of soapy water.If using traps for them,place far away from yourberry bushes. The trapshave powerful attrac-tants, and beetles willfeed on your plants beforegetting to the traps. Milkyspore is useful on thebeetle grubs only in warmclimates.
A recent pest causinggreat concern on softfruits, including brambles,is the spotted wingdrosophila. Late seasonfruits appear more vulner-able than those in sum-mer. Like a fruit fly, thisvinegar fly is so named asit is attracted to vinegar.So one control, and meansfor monitoring for thispest, is to hang plasticcups among your plantswith apple cider vinegar.Use 32-ounce cups withseveral holes in the sides,and cover on top. Use acouple drops of dish deter-gent, which helps fliessink into the vinegar.
The spotted wingdrosophila first arrivedon the west coast in 2008from Asia, and has rapid-
ly spread east and intothe northeast, thanksmainly to human trans-port of infected fruit andplants. The flies lay eggsin ripening fruit, whichhatch into larvae in theripe fruit. So one way toprevent this pest is tocover bushes before fruitsripen with a very finemesh netting or fabricrow cover, as used onvegetable crops. Anchorwell to the ground. Pickfruit right as they ripen,and remove any old ordropped fruit. Look fororganic sprays containingeither spinosad,pyrethrin, or azadiractin(from the neem tree), andapply as appropriate andas listed on the label.
In fall, cut one-cropraspberries to ground lev-el and remove all thecanes (“floricanes”) thatbore fruit that season.These tend to be morewoody and brittle, andlighter in color. Cut outall weak canes, and thinremaining first-yearcanes (those that did notfruit, the “primocanes”) to6 inches apart. These willbe the canes that bearfruit the following season.Cut back remainingcanes to 4 to 5 feet high.If you’re growing two-cropcultivars just for their fallcrops, you can cut alltheir canes back in latefall to a couple incheshigh, as they’ll bear fruiton canes produced thefollowing summer.
With the right care, youshould get at least 10years of harvests fromyour berry patch, oftenmore, with first harveststhe second year. Figureon one to two pints permature plant, dependingon cultivar and culture.For 4 people, dependingon preference and uses, aguideline might be toplant 8 blackberry plants,40 red raspberries, and10 yellow or fall-cropraspberries. With such apatch you should haveplenty for freezing (easy)and jams, in addition tofresh eating. If for fresheating, choose severalcultivars that ripen at dif-ferent times. If for pro-cessing, you mightchoose ones that ripen atthe same time for ease ofhandling.

NHT-SA’s SaferCar app allowsusers to search its 5-StarSafety Ratings for vehiclesby make and model, lo-cate car seat installationhelp, file a vehicle safetycomplaint, find recall in-formation and subscribeto automatic noticesabout vehicle recalls.
NHTSA will also give de-velopers real-time accessto the data that powersthis app through an Appli-cation Programming Inter-face (API), enabling themto integrate these datainto new and existingapps and empoweringconsumers with impor-tant safety information.Millions of consumers al-ready rely on these data toinform their purchasingdecisions on popular au-tomobile review sites; nowthey’ll be able to accessthese data in real-time.
“Safety is our highestpriority, and we’re alwaysworking to find new andbetter ways for people toaccess SaferCar, one ofthe most popular pro-grams on our website,”said U.S. TransportationSecretary Ray LaHood.“This app takes advan-tage of the latest technol-ogy to ensure that con-sumers have the real-time information theyneed to buy safe, drivesafe and stay safe.”
The new SaferCar appgives consumers immedi-ate access to key safetyinformation to help themmake informed decisions,with features including:
• 5-Star Safety Ratings:Consumers consideringvehicle purchases can lookup crash test ratings andcompare them across dif-ferent makes and models.
• Recalls and Com-plaints: App users canstay on top of safety is-sues for vehicles they al-ready own. Consumerscan register their vehiclesto be notified by NHTSA ifa safety issue is discov-ered. The app also makesit simple to submit com-plaints to NHTSA regard-ing possible safety prob-
lems with a particular ve-hicle.
• Help Installing ChildSeats: The app helps con-sumers ensure their mostprecious passengers ridesafe. Users can quicklyget driving directions tothe nearest child seat in-spection station and getassistance to properly in-stall their car seats andboosters.
•Safety Headlines andAlerts: App users can re-ceive important news andinformation from NHTSA,as well as recall noticesand push notices on theirrecorded vehicles.
The announcement isjust the first phase for theSaferCar app for iPhoneand iPod Touch devices,which can be downloadedfrom Apple’s iTunesStore. “Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes or new belts and hoses, that peri-odic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a newcar,” said Rich White, executive director Car Care Council. “The bottom line is thata properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, lesspolluting and more valuable. The smartest way to get a solid return on investmentis to keep your car through what we call the ‘Cinderella Era.’ It’s that period of timeafter the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest re-pairs.”
With proper care, the typical vehicle should deliver at least 200,000 miles of safe,dependable performance. The most common maintenance procedures and repairsto keep your car operating safely and reliably while maintaining its long-term val-ue involve checking the oil, filters and fluids, the belts and hoses, brakes, tires andair conditioning. The council also recommends an annual tune-up and wheel align-ment.
“Last year, the average tax refund was nearly $3,000. By simply allocating a por-tion, or the equivalent of just one new car payment, consumers could cover an en-tire year’s worth of basic maintenance and live happily ever after with their currentvehicle,” said White.
