POLAND, NY — Holo-caust survivor HelenSperling shared her chal-lenging and emotionalstory with Poland CentralSchool District studentson their first day ofschool recently.
Sperling, a 92-year-oldJewish woman, grew upin the nation of Poland, and she appreciated theirony as she spoke toPoland school students ingrades six to 12.
“I think it’s wonderful forme to open the year here,”she said. “I hope that when
you leave the room, you’llbe a little bit different thanwhen you came.”
The Poland StudentCouncil had the idea toinvite Sperling to speak tostudents in order to startthe year off with a posi-tive message, said JasonMitchell, the MiddleSchool/High School prin-cipal.
“I thought the opportu-nity would be great for ourstudents,” Mitchell said.“Not only would they havethe chance to hear from aHolocaust survivor –
which most of their peerswill not have – but theywould undoubtedly learnvaluable life lessons fromher, particularly abouthow to treat others.”
Through her words dur-ing the presentation,Sperling took the stu-dents on a nearly two-hour journey from the ini-tial German occupation ofher hometown, to her lifein concentration campsand to the moment thatled her to start publiclysharing her story.
Sperling discussed
troubling moments fromthe German occupationsuch as a solider sittingin her father’s chair, herbest friend turning herback on her, her familybeing forced to move outof its house so Germanscould live there and herfather crying when hefound out his lilac busheshad been dug up andsent away.
There was always talkthat if people couldn’tfind jobs or weren’t hap-py, they would be “reset-tled,” Sperling said. Thehope was that this meantthey would go somewherewhere jobs were avail-able, she said, but thetruth would be muchmore terrible.
“They were telling usthey were going to reset-tle us, and we waited forthe world to save us,” shesaid. “The silence wasvery bad.”
After detailing many ofthe terrible experiencesshe had to go through inconcentration camps, where she lost her moth-er and father forever,Sperling said her survivalwas 99 percent sheerluck. A tiny percentage, however, was her abilityto hold onto her dignity, she said.
Sperling managed tomaintain that dignity bywriting poetry, purposelymessing up factory tasksassigned to her and refus-ing an apple, bread andcake from a German whopreviously reported herfor messing up the tasks.
“You can live for a longtime without food andwater,” she said, later inthe presentation. “Butyou cannot live for longwithout hope.”
During the whole expe-rience, Sperling didn’tknow what was takingplace with World War II.Eventually, on one night, she heard the loud noisesof Allied forces bombingthe camp where she wasbeing held.
“It was a wonderfulnight when we gotbombed,” she said. “We
saw the Germans scared, and it was wonderful.”
At one point when beingled on a long walk fromplace to place, Sperlingsaw Allied airplanes over-head, and the Germanslooked scared again.
After what seemed likean eternity later, sheheard loud sounds again,
and huge American tanksarrived. The Americansoldiers who rescuedSperling and the othersquickly emptied theirpockets to provide choco-lates and other items. Some of the soldiers cried.
Later, the group waswelcomed into a town andeventually invited to a din-ner with bread, cereal, milk and white tablecloths.
“And we were free,” shesaid.
Sperling would go on tomove to the UnitedStates, where she met herhusband, who also was aholocaust survivor. Theywere married for 50years, and he died eightyears ago.
The couple adopted twochildren. When one of the
children came home at 8years old and said shehad been called a namebecause she was Jewish,Sperling decided sheneeded to start sharingher story with others.
She ended the presen-tation by giving advicesuch as to love your chil-dren and to never give up.
She also offered to eachstudent a hug and a bluebracelet that says “thoushall not be a bystander.”
Sperling even appliedher message to bullying, which has been a majortopic in schools. This year,Poland implemented theDignity for All StudentsAct, which is a state lawthat addresses bullying.
“You cannot be a by-stander,” Sperling said.“You cannot allow your-self to be a bully. Youcannot allow your friendto be a bully.”
After the speech, Sper-ling received a standingovation. Students andteachers gathered aroundfor more than 20 minutesto hug Sperling and re-ceive a bracelet.
Since her visit, stu-dents have been wearingtheir bracelets and prom-ising to treat one anotherbetter and not be by-standers, Mitchell said, adding that StudentCouncil deserves thecredit for coming up withthe idea.
“It was definitely a greatstart to the year,” he said.

According to Webster’s New World Dictionary of
the American language, the following provides a
good definition of the word “ponder.”
Ponder = to weigh mentally; think deeply about;
consider carefully; to meditate.
Now that we are learned students of Mr. Webster,
let’s draw up a chair around the old chunk stove,
snack on some salted peanuts, sip on a Coke or
Pepsi, and settle down for a serious mental
weigh-in, or ponder.
Let’s get rid of the nonsense first and then get
down to some serious considering or meditation.
First ponder: If it takes a hen and a half a day and
a half to lay an egg and a half, how long would it take
a monkey with a wooden leg to kick the seeds out of
a dill pickle?
I confess at different times in the past years I
have pondered this problem. I have also asked my
wife to help me ponder. After a few seconds of deep
consideration she asked, “What happened to the
poor monkey’s leg?” which left us both pondering
about the leg.
Maybe he was hanging by his tail in a tree next to
Darwin’s relatives when a great explosion—or a big
bang—happened. Causing his tail to give way, he fell
and crushed his leg. Is it possible he was an
evolutionist and thought that a 3-legged monkey
would be better?
While we were still pondering, I remembered the
letter I received a couple of years ago admonishing
any mention of religion or politics in this paper. In
keeping with her advice, I guess I should apologize to
any of Darwin’s relatives. Maybe they were not even
there, but in some other trees picking fleas off each
other, popping the fleas like M&M’s. On the other
hand, maybe what ever happened to those early
Darwin relatives and their flea harvesting—should
stay there. You know if it happened there, it should
stay there.
Furthering our attempt to
ponder, what conclusion do you
think would be appropriate for
this? How much wood would a
woodchuck chuck if a
woodchuck could chuck wood?
Approaching this ponder from
a countryman’s point of experi-
ence we probably should discuss—are we pondering
hard wood? Soft wood? Fine grain? Or what?
On the other hand, why was the woodchuck
chucking wood? It seems that wood chucking is a
job for beavers. Attempting to be fair to Mr. Darwin
and his famous theory of evolution, is it not
possible the beaver with his advanced wood chuck-
ing capability evolved from the woodchuck? All he
had to do was grow a big bulbous tail, grow
oversized buckteeth, learn how to swim and build his
house above water. Who knows? Maybe Darwin was
right all the time.
Let’s take a break and indulge in a little Irish
blarney:
I spend so much time chatting about Ireland you
might wonder if I was born over there. No, I was born
in a farmhouse in the township of Middlefield, NY. I
wanted to be close to my mother that day.
An Irish farmer said, “I know why the sun never set
on the British Empire. God wouldn’t trust an
Englishman in the dark.”
I’m a fan of Fox News, which claims to be
conservative, but on one of their—five—programs I
wonder what image they are posturing. It appears
to be spiked heels, long legs, uncovered thighs,
low-cut tops. What’s next? Buns?
Before we run out of paper, let’s get back to
mentally weighing.
While some of this may seem like blarney, it can’t
really be true blarney. It happened here in America
from a man who claims to be of American birth, so
maybe it should be thought of as bullpen apples.
During President Obama’s July 13th speech in
Roanoke, Virginia he said and punctuated with hand
waving, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build it,
somebody made it happen,” implying the
government.
Lets ponder this. “Henry Ford could not have
invented and produced the Model T Ford if the
government did not first build the roads.”
I would suggest we send to our President a few old
magazines, newspapers, and books with pictures
showing teams of horses pulling one of Henry Ford’s
Model T cars out of a mud-filled trench in the
middle of a road. On the other hand it might not
produce any thoughtful gain. Is it possible he does
not ponder for himself but has the government do
it for him? Now that would be tricky, wouldn’t it? A
government in the year 2012 that thinks.
I’m sure some of the country folks who were
building dirt roads with picks, shovels, and horses
would have appreciated some government help. It
seems the government could have at least sent
those country folk a few bottles of horse liniment
for their aching muscles. On the other hand, maybe
those dirt roads had to be built by the government
before God could create horses, mules, donkeys,
and oxen. Something to ponder about, isn’t it?
I can see it all now. The government intentionally
allowed those mud holes and broken dirt roads to
be there so that farmers could make a few bucks
dragging stuck Model T’s out of the unroad, road. Is
it possible the government caused the mud to be
manufactured too?
A little more pondering might cause us to
consider carefully.
What, or who, is a political liberal? If I knew the
answer, it would be foolish to ask the question. It
appears a liberal can be likened unto a man sitting
on the fence who cannot think deep enough whether
to stay there or climb down and do something
worthwhile. You know—the old saying—never do
today what you can put off until tomorrow.
Something may happen and you won’t have to do
anything at all.
When one of those fence sitters refuse to take a
stand on an issue, are they not automatically
allowing one side or the other to win? Now that’s a
ponder. That’s a voter who has poked holes in his
own influence or vote.
The following is repeated from a National Press
Association published column. “But hang on to your
wallets: The Kaiser Family Foundation survey
showed premiums for job-based family health
insurance coverage has risen by nearly $2,400
since 2009 when Obama took office.”
Most of us in this country are citizens with the
right and privilege to vote.
Like the liberal who stands for nothing, those who
do not vote have actually joined the liberals.
Soon upstate New York will put on its colorful fall
mackinaw. Warm days and cold nights leading into
three to four months of winter. Build up your pile of
firewood and packages of popcorn. Even the
squirrels are preparing for winter with its snow and
cold weather. In the Holy Bible, the good Lord says,
“Come on to me who are heavy laden and I will give
you rest.” When your personal pondering becomes
too deep to handle alone, turn to God in prayer—
you will find help.
God bless and keep on waving at the red bike.
Hope to see you in church this Sunday.

National Adult Day Ser-vices is being celebratednationally the week ofSept. 16, and the themefor this year is “Adult DayServices: Care, Compas-sion, Community.” Ac-cording to Folts ADHS Di-rector Clare Lidano, RN,the staff and registrantsdecided to use this themeas the perfect opportunityto do a project for thecommunity that wouldbenefit children headingback to school.
By collecting a wide as-sortment of school sup-plies during the past sev-eral weeks, the ADHS reg-
istrants and staff wereable to donate them to St.Francis De Sales Schooland St. Anthony & JosephChurch for the HerkimerElementary School to dis-tribute to needy childrenas they begin their newschool year.
“The registrants here atFolts ADHS always seemto have a special bondwith children,” comment-ed Director Lidano. “Theyderived great pleasurefrom this project, andtheir excitement increasedas the school suppliescontinued to mount up.It’s been very heart warm-ing to see the compassionthat they showed in want-ing to help children in ourown community.”
