Hungry for farm-fresh experiences? Dutchess County, in the heart of the Hudson River Valley, offers you plenty of opportunities to feed your body, as well as nurture your mind and soul.

The small, individual- and family-owned farms, vineyards and distilleries, located throughout the heart of the Hudson Valley, are a sight to behold. Breathe the fresh country air as you take in the lush farmscapes, rolling hills and horse farms, scenic river valley views and wide open space.

Visit a Dutchess County farm and learn how to make handcrafted cheese, how moonshine is made, how hops are grown and turned into beer. Tap a tree for maple syrup, taste farm-fresh milk, visit the sheep that produce the finest wool, explore a corn maze, or pick seasonal fruits, berries, vegetables, Christmas trees, and more.

If tasting is believing, then the opportunities are endless. Start the day with a hearty, homemade breakfast served as part of your overnight stay at a charming bed & breakfast. Sample the best of nature’s bounty at one of our many farm stands or farmers markets. Take part in a wine tasting and tour. And don’t forget to enjoy mouth-watering culinary creations at our restaurants that incorporate fresh, local ingredients into their dishes.

One reason our restaurants are so exceptional can be traced to the extraordinary variety of produce yielded by the area’s rich soil. More and

more chefs are developing distinct regional menus featuring locally grown and sourced products. The Culinary Institute of America’s flagship campus is located here in Hyde Park and many of our restaurants are fortunate to have their graduates as chefs.

You can also shop ‘till you drop in Dutchess County. For a taste of “culture” with your agriculture, visit our specialty shops, which offer an array of artisanal foods and more that are inspired by our breath-taking farms and fields.

In addition to preserving the local landscape and providing great-tasting food and beverages, our farms play an important role in supporting the local economy. Once known as the “bread basket of New York,” our region has a rich, agriculture-based heritage that continues today. Dutchess County has more than 1,700 farms, encompassing about 30 percent of the county’s total acreage, comprising over 170,000 acres. Together these farms, representing a variety of agricultural sectors, generate millions of dollars in annual sales, and provide a direct economic benefit to area residents.

Millerton, Pine Plains, Dover, and Pawling Itinerary • Start your day in the village of Millerton, home to the internationally

acclaimed Harney & Sons Fine Teas. • Get an up-close look at handcrafted art glass by Gilmor Glassworks. • Chose one of several dining locations. • On Saturdays, until 1 pm enjoy the Millerton Farmer’s Market at

the Railroad Plaza. • Drive along Scenic Route 22 to McEnroe Organic Farm.

Then head to Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains. There is a sprawling network, on 400 acres, of interconnected tunnels, bunkers, cleverly disguised chicken coops and false chimneys all originally built to escape detection from the law. And now visit this recently renovated site, which has been added to the New York State Archeological Inventory as a Bootleg Era Bunker Complex and recently included in the State and National Register of Historic places. Dutch’s Spirits specializes in artisanal hand-made spirits: Dutch’s Spirits Sugar Wash Moonshine, Peach Brandy, and Dutch’s Colonial Cocktail bitters.

Then head south to Dover Plains for a visit to Madava Farms, the Home of Crown Maple®Syrup, an 800-acre culinary and nature destination. You can tour the modern, state-of-the-art sugarhouse and tasting room and then taste for yourself why Crown Maple’s syrup is praised by chefs and culinary fans worldwide. Next walk scenic trails or take a stroll in Madava Farms’ working chef garden. Stop by The Farm Stand for maple, produce, and to savor a sandwich or pastry from Madava’s Culinary Institute of America-trained chef.

At the end of the day, head to Pawling for dinner at McKinney & Doyle, which highlights local produce and products on their menu. You can also check the restaurant listings section for restaurants, by town, that incorporate local products into their creative menus. Make it an overnight visit, by checking our accommodations list for lodgings that feature local products in their breakfast menus.

Poughkeepsie, Millbrook, Clinton Corners, & Rhinebeck • Start at Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie to sample and buy

some fabulous cheeses. • Then head to either (or both) Clinton Vineyards, Clinton Corners or

Millbrook Winery, Millbrook, to sample some delicious wines. • Then head to northern Dutchess and check out these farms,

ranging from pick your own or a farm market, Montgomery Place Orchards, Migliorelli Farm Market, or Grieg Farm. Check the center map for complete listings of all farms by town.

• End your day in beautiful, historic Rhinebeck. It is a tourism destination boasting hundreds of National Historic Register sites, fabulous restaurants, charming boutiques and shops, and numerous B&Bs. Check our restaurant listings guide to find Rhinebeck/Red Hook area restaurants featuring local products. While chocolate is not grown in this part of the United States, Oliver Kita’s chocolatiers proudly offer the finest vegan organic chocolate bars and other fine delectable creations in the Hudson Valley area.

• Many people also like to dine at one of The Culinary Institute of America’s restaurants, and see tomorrow’s culinary stars today.

Poughquag, Hopewell Junction, Lagrangeville & Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park • Start your day with some apple picking at either Barton Orchards

in Poughquag or Fishkill Farms in Hopewell Junction. • Then head to Dutchess Hops in Lagrangeville to learn how hops

are grown and beer is created. • Visit the revitalized City of Beacon’s brewpubs, winebars and local

restaurants, etc. • Poppy’s Burgers & Fries, which features local grass-fed beef and

other great farm-to-table restaurants and cafes. • Or travel to the Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park area and two local brewpubs:

Hyde Park Brewing Company, or Mill House Brewing Company.

Winter Itinerary • Cut your own Christmas tree at one of our many Christmas Tree

Farms (complete list on center map). • You can cut your own tree at two of our oldest farms, Hahn Farm in

Salt Point or Battenfeld’s Christmas Tree Farm in Red Hook. • Enjoy lunch or dinner at The Red Devon (named after their herd

of Red Devon cattle). The Red Devon Market, Café, Bar and Restaurant has become a farm-to-table destination in the Hudson Valley. The café serves breakfast, lunch, and delicious takeout food. It also offers a bar, and a main dining room open for dinner. Check out the charming village of Millbrook for other great farm fresh food dining options.
