It would appear that our fear of losing both the Kiwi Bankand Post Office services was a little premature.

An interview today with Mr Bernard Teahan of Trust Househas resulted in some interesting and positive facts.

To develop the whole area from Chung’s Supermarket toJohnson Street it was vital for the Community Trust topurchase all the existing buildings and businesses. This ofcourse included the Post & Lotto Shop and the Cafe. However it was never the Trusts intention to operate thesebusinesses themselves nor was it in their mandate to closethem.

Negotiations are under way, with some positive reactions,

Kiwibank and Post Shop in Featherston

If, and there are strong feelings that this will happen, theywill all be incorporated in the new supermarket. It is hoped to have a final decision by early to mid February.

The aim of Trust House is to ensure that Featherstonresidents will not be without these vital services, that hasalways been their intention. The fact that they are unwillingto operate the services themselves is purely an economicand business decision.

In the meantime we can sleep easy and enjoy the wonderfulservice we now have and look forward to a new andcomplete centre to our town.

to sell all the businesses in questions to private operators.

Work is now well underway on our new public toilets, thecontractors (Holmes Construction) moved in anddemolished the old toilet block on the 11th January andhave now completed the concrete pad.

A large number of locals and visitors turned out to watchthe old toilet block being demolished, which took only acouple of hours would you believe.Work is due to be completed in early April and in themeantime three portaloos are on site to assit the travellingpublic and locals alike.

Featherston Public Toilets

The Promotional Group has worked closely with the SouthWairarapa District Council to ensure that the toilets beingbuilt are what the community wants, and would like to takethis opportunity to thank all Council for the funding andsupport throught out this process.

The new toilet is based on the award winning Taihape designand will be an asset to our community.

Well by now everyone is back at work and the young onesare getting ready for school. I hope you have been able toenjoy some time off with family and friends and even get someof those outside jobs done.

We have been lucky enough to have a number of overseasvisitors stay. One thing I enjoy is taking them around ourgreat little town and district. Our visitors always enjoy thetrip out to Lake Ferry, Ngawi and the lighthouse. My onlyproblem is when I see rubbish bags left on the roadside byvisitors to our beautiful area (as locals would never do this). There has been a successful prosecution with illegal dumpingof rubbish in the past, so if you see this happening pleasecontact both the police and council – you will be surprisedhow easy it is to track down these people.

Hopefully by the time you read this the new Featherston PublicToilets should be either completed or almost completed.Maybe it’s just me but why is it that most things in Featherstonseem to take a little longer to get done? However when theydo they’re exactly what the town wants and they work andthey get used! So a big thank you to all involved and thanksfor hanging in there and not giving up.

Another project that has been on the radar for a number of

Councillor’s Commentby Councillor Dean Davies

years and is now finally happening is the new footpath at theRailway Station – our commuters have been asking for afootpath there for years and this is one project I have beenmaking a stand over for some time, however a big thank youmust go to my fellow councillor Porky Sexton for doing thehard yards to ensure this not only gets put onto the works listbut is put right at the top – Cheers Porky!!

Yet another project that is almost ready to roll is theCommunity Patrol, again this has been in the pipe line for aconsiderable time. However, unlike the previous CommunityPatrol, times have changed and there is more paper workinvolved and the volunteers need to be screened which meanssomeone needs to take this duty on. Our new CommunityPatrol Co-ordinator is Davina Simm who is working alongsideour Community Police Officer Brenda and together they havealmost completed everything and will be ready to roll out thefirst Community Patrol very soon. They are always lookingfor new volunteers, so if you feel this is something you coulddo just call into the Police Station and have a chat withBrenda.

If you have any questions, concerns or issues please don’thesitate in contacting either myself (Dean Davies), SolitaireRobinson or Porky (Keith) Sexton.

GOING “THE EXTRA MILE” FORFIRST AID

Is your First Aid kit up to date? Most of us are uncomfortablyaware that it’s a long time since the last restocking . . . andisn’t it looking a bit empty?

Kahutara sisters Mary Mason and Trish Lewis of Otahuna inKahutara, have worked out how to go the extra mile to helptheir country neighbours. Both are St John-trainedambulance officers in the Featherston crew, so they understandthe needs of people living away from towns.

Over the past few months they have been driving the backroads of the South Wairarapa, calling in at homes, farms andother workplaces. St John has always offered acomprehensive range of kits for homes and workplaces, andvisiting remote places in their smartly-marked St John FirstAid vehicle has proved extremely successful.

“We’ve been thrilled with the response,” says Mary. “Thisis a great way to meet Wairarapa people and sort out theirfirst aid needs. As well, we get to explore the out-of-the-way roads in daylight – a useful recce in case we ever neededto take the ambulance down them.”

Many employers have recognised that these kits meet theiron-site safety requirements and have ordered multiple kitsfor the various work areas on their farms.

If you would like to see the range of St John First Aid Kits, phone Mary or Tricia at Otahuna, on 3088026
