1 Phoenix FEATHERSTON Volume XIV Issue III MARCH 2009 To all the people of Featherston, As many of you know on 05 August 08 our lives changed forever Our son, 9yr old Brad went for an MRI scan at 2.30pm and by 8.30pm that same night we were told that he had a brain tumour. We were rushed to Wairarapa Hospital that evening for urgent medication and prepared for transfer to Wellington Hospital the following morning. Within 2 days we were in Christchurch Hospital and Brad was being prepared for major surgery on Friday 08/08/08 (at 0800hrs)! We were told it would be a 5 hour operation – 7hrs later he was finally in recovery where he stayed for another 2 hours. As you can imagine it was extremely stressful for us. Brad was not really fully awake until the following Monday – poor thing. It took about 3 weeks for his eyesight and balance/coordination to improve to the point where he could watch TV for a short time and walk without the use of a wheelchair. We never thought we would ever encourage our child to play ‘Playstation’ but we did as that represented another small step towards recovery from the surgery. Since the 8 th August we have experienced many lows such as being told the size of the tumour (5x5x5cm !!!), and that there were 2 tumours (the other being slightly smaller). We were also told the tumour was malignant – that was soul destroying and brought us to tears. Knowing that poor Brad has a long road ahead of him with ongoing treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy and probably more surgery) was heartbreaking. Also being told that he had to have a lumbar puncture and port-a-cath inserted under general anaesthetic was hard to take. This procedure was done on Wednesday 20 th August. In telling you about some of the lows we have also experienced some amazing highs (believe it or not) when Brad has proven to us how much of a fighter he is. To put up with what he has gone through is just amazing and yet he has barely moaned, and has been cooperative (if not a little cheeky) with all staff concerned. Josh (Brad’s older brother) too has been an inspiration. He has handled the whole situation with a maturity beyond his 13 years. He has been selfless and understanding and we are extremely proud of him. Brad completed 6½ weeks of combined chemotherapy & radiotherapy in Christchurch, and has commenced further chemotherapy under the new team in Wellington. At this stage we will only have to go back to Christchurch if he needs further surgery – here is hoping that is not the case. He has chemotherapy for the next 10 months so we still have a long road ahead of us. What has really touched us is the incredible amount of support and generosity we have received from people. It has been so overwhelming we just can’t thank everyone enough. Every text, phone call, letter, card, gift, prayer, donation and kind thought passed onto us has been gratefully received. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend a couple of the special functions held for Brad (quiz night & auction). What fabulous, fun evenings they were. We want to say a huge thank-you to our friends that organised these events and to the other friends that attended in support of Brad. We wish that we could acknowledge everyone personally but the sheer volume of kind wishes we have received has made it difficult for us to do this. We also wish to thank our families – they have been, and continue to be a real strength to us in this trying time. From the bottom of our hearts we thank each and every one of you. Kindest Regards, Glenn, Ilana, Joshua and Brad Burt

Walkway NewsIn the aftermath of the launch of the Featherston ReservesWalkway and the publication of the accompanying brochurelate last year, FWRT (Featherston Walkways and ReservesTrust) is now set upon restoration, redevelopment, and newtrack initiatives.

Action Plans for Otauira Reserve and Dorset Square arebeing prepared for the Council to approve. At Otauira, thetrack will be widened and straightened for the use of cyclistsas well as walkers, weeds in the section dominated by blackbeech and tree lucerne will be removed to allow forregeneration, grass will be sown in the area bulldozed clearof weeds prior to the walkway launch, and some thelandscape features, now rotted away, may be rebuilt.

Dorset Square will undergo a facelift. Trees which died inlast year’s drought will be removed, and the reserve will beopened up so that the interior picnic area is more clearlyvisible.

Trust members are also looking into the possibility of linkingFeatherston tracks with Department of Conservation tracksin Tararua Forest Park. This is in response to growing interest

among both locals and trampers outside Featherston inaccessing the Park close to the township. This would allowtrampers and walkers to catch the train from Wellington, forexample, and head off into the Tararuas without the hassle ofleaving cars behind or arranging to be picked up in a remoteplace. An Action Plan for this project is also being developed.

Many local organisations, businesses, and individuals havehelped FWRT do its work. The latest act of generositycomes form South Wairarapa Rotary who have helped fundweed -control for Otauira Reserve. FWRT will shortly beapplying to the Department of Conservation, for a CommunityConservation Fund grant to carry out the Council endorsedrestoration of Barr -Brown Reserve . Another possible sourceof funding is developer, Brent Slater, who has also offered topay for part of the restoration. Mr Slater wants the Reserveto be renamed Brent’s Bush Reserve in return for providingfunding. An application to investigate such a name changehas been presented to the Community Board. (Mr Slaterand has also gifted a landscape plan to FWRT for future useby the Trust if it so wishes).

FWRT will be holding its AGM in April, date, time and placeto be advised in the April Phoenix. People who wish to beinvolved and in either restoration work or track developmentare invited to attend.

The Wairarapa Herb Society will launch their new bookHERBAL GREEN AND PRACTICAL Tips on Monday 9thMarch at the Masterton Library at 2 p.m.

The idea to produce this book came from a meeting of theSociety last year When members shared tips for springcleaning etc. using natural products. It was felt that the publicwould like to know some of this information — Two of ourMembers, Val Richardson and Bev Wood have preparedthe book for publication.

Instead of purchasing expensive cleaners and other materials. The book is full of ideas for making your own products, whichis so much cheaper, healthier and greener. Sections includeHousehold cleaning, Gardening tips, Cooking ideas,Preserving, Pets and Pests, Planting by the moon, Companionplanting.

The objective of the Herb Society is to promote and shareknowledge of herbs and their cultivation. Herbs have beenused as a source of healing and in cooking for hundreds ofyears. This book is being launched during Herb Awarenessweek March 8-15 which is observed by all Herb Societies inNZ. This is the special project of the Wairarapa Herb Society

HERBAL GREEN AND PRACTICAL TIPS will sell for$10.00 per copy which covers the cost of printing thepublication — there is no profit made.

Meta Riddiford Kindergarten News

Welcome to 2009 and a new kindergarten year. We wouldlike to welcome back families from 2008 and extend thatwelcome to the children and their families who are new toMeta Riddiford. We are looking forward to sharing the2009 year with you all.

We are now five weeks into the term and the children startedthe term by familarising themselves with the kindergartenenvironment after the long break. Emerging interests overthe past five weeks have been stories, ball skills and gardening.Children are sharing stories in front of the group at mat time, using magnetic stories, writing stories and telling stories usingpuppets. Ball skills such as kicking, throwing and catchinghave been seen and some children have had the bats outand have been playing bat and ball games. This interest isgoing to be extended with the use of the Sport Wairarapatrailer which contains various sports equipment for thechildren to use and learn different skills from. With the arrivalof the garden beds children have developed an interest ingardening and have helped to fill the beds and plant the seeds.

Our plans for the remainder of this term include continuingto help our new and younger children settle into thekindergarten environment, extending the areas of interest ofall the children and a trip to visit Trentham Kindergarten. Our focus for the year ahead will once again be our outdoorarea and the revamping of it.

With the grant received from HEHA we have purchasedand put together two raised gardens which we have filledwith compost. We have just planted our first seedlings(spinach) and first seeds (carrots). We are hoping to beharvesting the fruits of our efforts very soon! HEHA standsfor Healthy Eating – Healthy Action and focuses on promotinghealthy choices. Thank you to Wairarapa DHB for ourHEHA grant.

Congratulations to our teachers Justine and Lynette for takingpart in and completing the Cancer Society Relay For Life.Relay For Life raises funds which are used to support cancerpatients at all stages from diagnosis through to recovery.Well done Justine and Lynette!

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to those parentswho have supported us so far this term. We have had somewonderful parents help out in the kindergarten and somewho have taken on the role of Parent Help. The support ofparents is really appreciated by the teaching team and welook forward to their continued support throughout theremainder of the year.

Our Featherston Community swimming relay was held on3rd Feb with 21 teams entered and plenty of spectators.Ibelieve this event is a great indication of the spirit ofFeatherston. It is a good fun evening, lots of friendly faces, different shapes and ages but all with the mission to swimas fast as we can to win the Pioneer Trophy for the relayevent. The really keen fit swimmers aim to make the fastest7 swimmers in the 1 length 33 1/3m “Dash”, none of ourteam aimed that high!!But tremendous to see our local SamuelPepper come in 3rd in that final sprint race!

Ex-swimming club committee, ex and current swimmers, ourcouncillors and S.W.D.C CEO -Jack , local business andschool people, Swim Wairarapa officials and friends ofFeatherston swimming all voluntarily come along to help thecommittee ensure the event runs smoothly. We would liketo acknowledge the generous sponsorship and donationsreceived from Marcus at the Tin Hut, Matt at Sports Arena,Featherston Community Store, Collin’s Auto’s, FeatherstonCinema, Chungs Supermarket, Nebulite Masterton, Hi-Tech, Lady Q, Lavender’s Green, Town & CountryTakeaways & Cafe and Adamsons Service Station. Thisevent is recognised now in the Wairarapa and extending toWellington.Yes our team winners came from Wellington thisyear, but they did bring 2 teams over! We believe it was areal coup to have our governing body including the C.E.Oparticipate in the Featherston relay and they all thoroughlyenjoyed themselves and keen to return to defend in 2010.

Featherston Community relay shows how friendlyFeatherston is. We have received tremendous positivefeedback from out of the area, complimenting the eventrunning, friendly atmosphere and the excellent pool facilityand spectator stand we have in Featherston now. Our clubpatron Mrs P Murphy Q.S.M. and winning team werefeatured on the Swimming NZ website.
