DIVINE WISDOM

The Lord's message, through Moses, was to "take no revenge and cherish no grudge . . . love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, "Great in theory, but not always re-alistic!" Then Jesus in today's Gospel goes even fur-ther. Take a slap in the face and then turn the oth-er cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we're tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the "real world." Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest--without dis-tinction. We must examine our wisdom and common sense to see how they compare to the wisdom of God, and make adjustments accordingly.

TODAY'S READINGS

First Reading -- Take no revenge and cherish no grudge; love your neighbor as yourself. (Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18). Psalm -- The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading -- You are the temple of God, and holy (1 Corinthians 3:16-23). Gospel -- Offer no resistance; love your enemies (Matthew 5:38-48).

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner Matthew 5:38-48: “Be Perfect as Your Heavenly Father is Perfect”

It is a common understanding that God does not expect what is impossible for his people. God makes us and knows our limitations: and thus, does not demand the impossible out of us. Having said that, we also realize that the commitment to Chris-tian discipleship is no minor thing: “Unless you hate your mother and father, and deny yourself and carry your cross, you cannot be my disciple.” In his famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus also gives his disciples another very tall order: “Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect,” (Mt 5:38)… The command to be perfect appears twice in the Gospels, only in Matthew though: in this passage and in the story about Jesus advising the rich man to let go of his possessions: “If you wish to be perfect, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven,” (Mt 19:21). The English word perfect is quite intriguing. We usually understand perfect in the sense of moral excellence and in the sense of flawlessness. But the etymology of this word suggests

something different. It comes from two Latin words per and facere—if I recall correctly from Latin grammar—which mean “to do something thoroughly.” Obviously this does not have the same connotation as moral ex-cellence. Does Jesus expect his disciples to be flawless? I think not. So what does the biblical concept of perfection mean? According to traditions, there has been a rigid distinction between ordinary Christians who keep the basic commandments of the faith and those who practice the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience (namely monks and nuns in religious orders). The latter group is obviously more perfect. Howev-er, such a distinction is not meant by the author of Matthew’s Gospel. The expectation to be perfect is re-quired for ALL of Jesus’ disciples: not only for an elite group… To be perfect, in the biblical sense, then means to be whole and undivided. In the context of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, this really makes sense. In one of the Beatitudes, Jesus proclaims blessed those who are “pure of heart.” As I said again and again, this does not refer to sexual purity. To be pure of heart is to will one thing: to be single-minded. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness”—In our pursuit of the Kingdom, Jesus calls us to be perfect in the sense that we are to seek God’s Kingdom wholeheartedly and with a single-minded devotion.

. . ¿Si te golpe-an, pon la otra mejilla?

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM

RCIA CORNER Sunday, March 5 the first Sun-day of Lent, the Catechumens are sent by the parish to the Rite of Election. This step is called election because the ac-ceptance made by the Church is founded on the election by God, in whose name the Church acts. (RCIA 119). Elec-tion begins with God and is wit-nessed by the Church. To be elected means to be chosen by God to be the way God wants to act in the world. This rite is the turning point for those who are seeking to be baptized. The period of Lent is the final preparation for the great Easter celebra-tion. All the baptized are God’s chosen people. What were you chosen to do? Please continue to pray for our catechumens and candidates.

More on the symbols and actions for the rite in the next corner.
