The Year of the Dog

February 14th ~ Valentines Day

2018 is noted to be the year of the Dog

in the Chinese New Year (commencing

on February 16th).

It is said that a dog is a man’s best

friend, and, in the spirit of the Chinese

culture, the dog symbolizes positivity

and loyalty.

It has been depicted that in the year

2018 there will be new hope to individ-

uals suffering from neglect, indiffer-

ence, and rejection from their communi-

ty.

The year of the Dog is about acceptance of inequalities on Earth, and

veering away from selfishness, greed, and solidarity.

This year is a good year for a lifestyle changes, as well as new busi-

ness endeavors!

1910, 1922, 1934, 1958, 1982, 1994 & 2018 are all years of the Dog.

Suncreek Remembers

On November 9th, 2017, we had the lovely Liz Alexander som-

berly perform war-time songs from the 1940s during our Re-

membrance Day Ceremony. Residents and staff were able to re-

flect on those putting their own lives at risk to provide us with the incredi-

ble world we live in today. The following residents were recognized during

the ceremony as veterans, workers, or family members of those who have

served: Lawrence Smith (Lily), Beatrice Pettigew (Magnolia), Corol Smith

(Magnolia), Chuck Giesbrecht (Magnolia), Luella Roberts (Iris), Nancy

Kinne (Iris), Helen Smith (Dogwood), Yvonne Waters (Lotus), and Arnica Kenar (Dahlia). To all whom

have fought for our peace, we humbly applaud you, as we are eternally grateful. Suncreek will always

remember.

Movember!

November, often in present day referred to as “Movember”, has been labeled as

Men’s Health Awareness Month. The idea of not shaving for

the month of November is a promotional tactic used to spread

awareness to some of the primary health issues faced by men,

such as: prostate cancer and mental health and suicide preven-

tion. To support this emerging awareness approach, volunteer

Sonya and Recreation Coordinator Ashley travelled from home

to home capturing photos of residents sporting an artificial

mustache. We will always take part in promoting any way we

can so that men can live longer, healthier lives! Happy Movem-

ber!

Choir Performance

On December 12th, 2017, Suncreek resi-

dents enjoyed the absolutely breathtak-

ing choir performance by Saint Thomas More Collegiate High

School Choir. These performers may be young, but were they ever

incredible! The room had never been so silent as these teenagers

captured the audience like never before. Thank you to Dahlia res-

ident Luisa Fulginiti’s lovely daughter, Maria, for organizing her

high school to

perform for us.

We can’t wait to

have them back!

Ugly Christmas Sweaters & More!

From ugly Christmas sweaters, to baking delicious pep-

permint cookies, to walker and wheelchair decorating,

our residents did it all! We definitely enjoyed all of our

Christmas festivities encouraging everyone to get in the

spirit!

Annual Resident Christmas Party

“Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas!” stated Magnolia resident, Tehal Jo-

hal, as he was brilliantly dressed in a full Santa suit! What would

Santa be without his better half? Our lovely volunteer Betty Revai,

or Mrs. Claus, graciously escorted Mr. Claus through the lively sea

of residents and families during our Christmas celebration. On De-

cember 15th, 2017, at the start of the afternoon we were graced

with a wonderful performance by Tina Tate, talented violinist, fol-

lowed by some upbeat hits that got everyone movin,’ sung by Gail

and Doug Hawkins from “Cheek-to-Cheek.” Suncreek staff mem-

bers Maria Santos (CSRN), Juliet Manansala

(NSA), Lolita Ancheta (RN), and Ashley Par-

ry (Recreation Coordinator ) danced to the hit

song “Jingle Bell Rock,” using original chore-

ography by the amazingly skilled Juliet Man-

ansala.

As if all of these wonderful performances

weren’t enough to get the party started, our

very own incredibly brilliant Chef Greg and

his unbelievable team put together a feast that had everyone’s

mouths watering! From a shrimp cocktail to chocolate macaroons,

there was a dish to suit everyone’s liking. Thank you kindly to all

of our hard-working staff that made this fun-filled event a great

success, as well as the amazing family members and residents

that filled the group with laughter and smiles. We look forward to

seeing what the Recreation Department has in store for next year!

Giving Back to Our Community

Does your family member wear eyeglasses or use a hearing aid or have

dental issues? Plan ahead. As people progress in dementia, their com-

munication skills go, too.

Vision testing requires understanding the questions and evaluating

whether this lens is sharper than that lens or distinguishing shapes of

letters on a chart. Hearing tests need the cooperation of the client to de-

cide if they can hear a particular tone and then formulate a response to

that. Dental visits can require sitting in an uncomfortable chair for

what must seem like a long time if you have mobility issues. And if you

can’t see very well or hear what is happening around you, or your teeth

are painful, it tends to affect your communication skills and, therefore,

your quality of life.

Make it a New Year’s resolution to get your loved one tested before they get to that stage. If

they can, they will thank you later. And, add a resolution to join us for a Family Council Meet-

ing and share your experience or compare notes with other family members and help to make

our residents’ lives better.

Gerri Sombke [email protected] "Helping you feel confident in a high tech world"

This year, Suncreek’s Chef Greg created yet another stunning gingerbread display to raffle off

for the Surrey Food Bank. After Suncreek matched funds raised, we were able to donate

$952.00! This is exciting, as the Surrey Food Bank will have 3 times the buying power for food!

In addition, everything from grocery store gift cards, toys, clothing, and household necessities

were generously donated to two local sponsor families in need of a little extra Christmas cheer.

Suncreek Village residents, families, and staff were able to exemplify the true meaning of

Christmas this year, and show just what is possible when we come together as a community.

Because of your kindness and generosity,

mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children,

were able to celebrate Christmas through the

gift of giving.

Thank you to everyone who partic-

ipated in these two incredible

events. We look forward to contin-

uing this tradition.

Happy New Year! Wishing you and your loved ones a happy

and healthy 2018! This is often a time for reflection. And

2017 was an exciting year as we began the implementation

of Point Click Care, an online, cloud-based medical record

system. Our nurses have moved to documenting online, and

education for our Nursing Service Aides will begin very

soon. It’s been an exciting process for us! The program is

complex and therefore we will be continuing to implement

sections of the program over the next 8 months.

With our commitment to continuous quality improvement initiatives, we

always start January by acknowledging Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

Staff will be given the opportunity to watch the Teepa Snow Presentation

“Its All In Your Approach” throughout the month. In addition there will be

in-services reviewing dementia and care planning for our residents.

We are shifting our philosophy of care from the Eden Alternative to the

Resident Centered Care Model. What does this mean? Does anything

change for our residents? For more information we invite you to join us at

the next Family Council Meeting on Thursday January 11th at 4:30pm in

the Community Room. Hope you can join us! Light snacks and beverages

will be provided.

Wishing you all the best in 2018!
