in K89 began on August 7 when a troop from 2 Com­mando Company was embarked for transport to Dampier and insertion by canoe and boat.

GERALDTON hid in the Monte Bello Islands before emerging to harass the local industrial ports and 'fish' illegally.

The Blue forces had 001 arrested GERALDTON by the end of the exercise and thc ship returned to STI RLING in mid Augusl to enter an AMP.

The Southwest Pacific deployment commenced when the ship sailed on s<:ptemlxr 3,

GERA LDTON joined CESSNOCK at T I and commenced a rough pas­sage to the Solomon Islands, berth ing in Hon­iara on September 20 and sailing two days later.

After an ovemight passage the ship berthed m GtlO, m the Western Solomons.

A party of local dancers greeted the ship and all hands were put to work repairing and painting the local hospital.

The next day was the fi rst opportunity for relaxation for some weeks and most of the crew ... ·ent diving on World War II wrecksol vis­ited Kennedy Island.

After yet another rough passage the ship arrived in Funafuti. Tuvalu , on Sep­tember 29 and remained in port ovcr the weekend to participate in the celebrations surrounding

the 11th anni\'ersary of independence .

The passage to Noumea was e.tended 10 check Ihe Australian Fishing Zone around Norfolk Island before the ship berthed in Noumea on Oclober 9 fol­lowing a patrol of the AFZ near Norfolk Island.

The visit to Noumea was Ihe first by RAN ships for five year, and was "'ell received by the Frt'nch. who turned on the hospitalit)· .

RETURN GERALDTON entered

an AMP m Cairns on October 16 on completion of a PASSEX with the French l'a trol Boat LA G LORI EUSE.

The AM I' concluded at the end of the month and the ship made a brief SlOp in Townsville prior 10 com­mencing a week long palrol of the Great B:m ier Reef with scientisls from the Australian Institule of Marine Science embarked.

the workup anti workup progress evaluation of HMAS SWAN before assuming the role of opera· tional response \'essel over the Christmas period.

Off to Canberra to become cadets at the Australian Defence Force Academy are three young Queenslanders who paused briefly after taking the oath of allegiance as part of their induction into the Australian armed services.

Trying on the headgear of their respective ser· vices are Danielle Hethom, of Hamilton, David Roger, of Harvey Bay and Daryn Radford of Browns Plains.

n,e three were among 88 Queenslanders who were accepted this year as cadets at the academy.

After several years of study. they will emerge with a university degree and also as officers.

Naval Support Cornman· de r, Rear Admiral A. R. Horton, presented LWRNP Beaumont with the H.A. Dewsbury shield and certificate in a cere· mony at the RAN Security and Naval Police School.

Duling his long and dis­tinguished career, the late Harry Dewsbury was par­ticularly active in the con· tinuing training of Naval Police .
