What is the history of EarthTeam?EarthTeam was formed in 2000 by a coalition of educational, environmental, and governmentalrepresentatives who saw a need to provide community-based, curriculum connected

environmental programs for overwhelmed high school and middle school teachers who lackedthe time or resources to create such programs. Many secondary school students and teachers feltdisconnected from others of similar interest and discouraged by the lack of interest inenvironmental issues among the general student body. EarthTeam was created to support theseteachers and students in connecting with each other, increasing knowledge of pressingenvironmental issues, and participating in hands-on educational projects. While EarthTeamsmission has remained the same since its formation, new projects have been developed over theyears as the need has arisen.

What is the current top priority for EarthTeam? To engage youth, particularly the disenfranchised, to develop their knowledge and leadershipskills for improving the environmental health of their communities.

Down to a Science Forum: Restoring Coyote Valley San Francisco, Mon. Feb. 22, 2010Coyote Valley, an area of unprotected open space located in south San Jose, is a critical wildlife

linkage corridor connecting the Santa Cruz mountains and the Diablo range. This area has beenslated twice for major development and is still unprotected. If major development were to occurin this lush and open valley, it would sever this priceless connection doing irreparable harm tospecies and cause possible extinctions. Coyote Valley is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 170species of bird and 24 species of mammal, including the fragile Santa Cruz mountain lionpopulation. In an effort to learn more about this area and to prove to officials its value and needfor preservation, De Anza College faculty and students created a field research program calledthe Coyote Valley Landscape Institute. The project allowed students with little to no backgroundin field science to go out, collect scientifically sound data and use it to implement change in theircommunity. Please join us to view "Coyote Valley: Connecting People, Connecting Wildlife" afilm that tells the story of why Coyote Valley is so important to wildlife and to the youth of theSouth Bay. story of how one location in Emeryville was transformed from a center of pre-historic cultures toa commercial mecca for modern people. Before modern developers transformed this site, it washost to a decrepit paint factory that leaked toxic waste into the San Francisco Bay. Thisimportant film examines the decisions made during the toxic cleanup, excavation, andconstruction through the eyes of the City of Emeryville, the developer, the archaeologists, andthe Native Californians who worked on the site. In the Light of Reverence: Ten years in the

making, this important documentary explores American culture's relationship to nature in threeplaces considered sacred by native peoples: the Colorado Plateau in the Southwest, Mt. Shasta inCalifornia, and Devils Tower in Wyoming. Rich in minerals and timber and beloved byrecreational users, these "holy lands" exert a spiritual gravity which pulls Native Americans intoconflicts with mining companies, New Age practitioners, and rock climbers. Ironically, all sidessee themselves as besieged. Their battles tell a new story of culture clashes in an ancientlandscape. Wheelchair accessible around the corner at 411 28th Street. Film Screening & Discussion of "The Botany of Desire" SF Tues. March 2, 2010With Michael Pollan & Michael Schwarz. The apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato are the

stars of the film adaptation of journalist Michael Pollan's best-selling book, The Botany ofDesire. The two-hour documentary, which takes the same name, also features Pollan himself. Itbegins in the author's own garden before the film journeys to the potato fields of South America,

the apple orchards of Kazakhstan, the tulip markets of Amsterdam, and to a medical marijuanahot house. These four famous plants share histories with corresponding human desires-forsweetness, beauty, intoxication, and control over food production. The developmentalrelationship between human beings and the plants is what Pollan calls "the botany of desire." Inthis coevolution, Pollan argues, human beings are both controlled and controlling. "It makes justas much sense to think of agriculture as something the grasses did to people as a way to conquerthe trees," he writes. Purchase tickets online. Location: Herbst Theatre, War MemorialPerforming Arts Center, 401 Van Ness Ave, @ McAllister, San Francisco. Time: 7pm. Cost:$20. Info: 415-392-4400, http://www.cityarts.net/n.pollan.schwarz.html.
