Films: "Greening of Cuba" & "Cerro Pelado": Monday, May 19, 2008Short films from and about Cuba. The Greening of Cuba: When trade relations with the socialist

bloc collapsed in 1990, Cuba lost 80 percent of its pesticide and fertilizer imports and half itspetroleum--the mainstays of its highly industrialized agriculture. Simplicity Forum: Living on the Road and Tiny Houses: Wednesday, May 21, 2008Katherine McKay will talk about the growing contingent of people who live full-time or part-

time on the road in America, traveling in RVs, vans or campers, either by themselves or with agroup of others. They stay in national and state parks, national forests, or private campgrounds, and move on when they feel like it. Some work on the road or act as hosts in campgrounds. Evenfamilies with children (homeschooled) are part of the community of "dashboarders." Katherinewill talk about technical problems of living in this way (off all grids) and solutions she has foundover a period of decades of long-term camping. She will also have her camper van to be viewed.A related and partly overlapping topic is that of Tiny Houses. Many architects are now designingand building tiny houses for those who wish to simplify their living arrangements. Some of thesevery small houses are built on trailers or can be easily disassembled, allowing for almost thesame mobility as living in RVs. They have the advantages of inexpensive construction, lowresource use, quick cleaning, and, in some cases, bypassing of local construction codes.Location: Berkeley Public Library, Claremont Branch, 2940 Benvenue Ave., @ Ashby,Berkeley.

Our long term goal isfor the East Bay to use 100% renewable energy. Our near term goal is 50% renewable energy by2017 with high priority placed on local generation. The closer the Bay Area gets to 100%renewable energy, the less vulnerability to the rising costs and environmental impacts of fossilfuel and nuclear energy. The Greenprint discusses the alliance's policy platform which includes:

A Community Choice energy purchasing program which will support local investment inrenewable energy; Allowing homeowners with solar to sell their unused electricity; Strongincentives for homeowners to install solar, as Berkeley is now considering; Programs forneighbors to collectively purchase solar panels.
