February is Black History Month, 28 days set aside to celebrate the signifi cant contributions of African Americans to the fabric of American life in business, government, art, science, education and more. Rather than implying that Black Americans should only be recognized for one month, the February focus is meant to heighten awareness and challenge us all to continue exploring and learning throughout the year.
WTVP and PBS are all about helping people learn something new every day. Our deep commitment to equality and inclusion is refl ected in the rich diversity of the communities we serve and the award-winning content we offer daily. You will fi nd some of that content, like The Black Church: This is Our Story. This is Our Song.concentrated in this month, but you can see images and voices of Black Americans on WTVP every day. From the trusted coverage of PBS NewsHour and the insights of Finding Your Roots, to the multicultural residents of Sesame Street and the local voices on Consider This, At Issue and the Our Remarkable Local History series, WTVP attempts to explore all of the perspectives that make up the American experience.
So by all means, tune in to WTVP during February and explore the special Black History Month programming. But don’t let it end there. There are 337 more days in the year to learn from, appreciate and honor the contributions of Black Americans and all Americans to our collective history and culture.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH IS JUST THE BEGINNING
Brianna Thomas sings all over the world, but her musical journey began in her Peoria living room. Being born to musician C.J. Thomas meant early exposure to a variety of genres for Brianna. She joined his band, Dave and the Dynamics, when she was just six years old! Learn how she was able to musically convey her feelings at such a young age, why jazz is so important to her and what impact her Peoria teachers had in her becoming a performer, arranger and composer.
Consider This with Yvonne Greer is a talk show produced by WTVP featuring the people in our community in a whole new way. The intent is to connect with our leaders, entertainers and maybe even our neighbors in ways we may have never considered.

on the COVER
THE BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY. THIS IS OUR SONG.
The history of the Black church in America comes to life in a moving four-hour series from Finding Your Roots host, Henry Louis Gates Jr.
The centerpiece of Black History Month on WTVP, The Black Church: This is Our Story. This is Our Song. reveals how African Americans have worshipped and found ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World. For many, the Black church is simply a house of worship. For some, it is ground zero for social justice. For others, it is a place of cultural gifts exported to the world, from the soulful voices of preachers and congregants, to the sublime sounds of gospel music. Discover the broad history and culture of the Black church and explore African American faith communities on the front lines of hope and change.
This two-part series includes interviews with media executive and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey; singer, songwriter, producer and philanthropist John Legend; singer and actress Jennifer Hudson; Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry; gospel legends Yolanda Adams, Pastor Shirley Caesar and BeBe Winans; civil rights leaders the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. William Barber II; scholar Cornel West and many more.
“Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. has created an extraordinary fi lm which
deepens understanding, fosters conversation and so beautifully
connects our country’s past to our present.”
— Paula Kerger, PBS President and CEO
PART ONE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 8 PM
Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores the roots of African American religion, beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices under the brutal realities of human bondage. Learn how independent Black churches fl ourished after the Civil War, helping to fulfi ll the social, educational, fi nancial, cultural and political needs of the formerly enslaved. Gates highlights the stories of key fi gures such as Richard Allen and Jarena Lee of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Henry McNeal Turner, and Virginia Broughton and Nannie Helen Burroughs of the National Baptist Convention.

PART TWO TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 8 PM
The Black church expands its reach to address social inequality and minister to those in need in the Jim Crow South and during the Great Migration and the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. After the violent loss of leaders like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many Black churches struggled to remain relevantin an era of increasing secularization while reckoning with urgent social and cultural issues. The series brings the story of the Black Church up to the present — a time of renewed struggle for racial justice in America.

programming HIGHLIGHTS
INDEPENDENT LENS: 9TO5: THE STORY OF A MOVEMENTMONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 9 PM
When Dolly Parton sang 9 to 5, she was doing more than just shining a light on the fate of American working women. Parton was singing the true story of a movement that started with 9to5, a group of Boston secretaries in the early 1970s. Their goals were simple—better pay, more advancement opportunities and an end to sexual harassment, but their unconventional approach attracted the press and shamed their bosses into change. Featuring interviews with 9to5’s founders, as well as actor and activist Jane Fonda, 9to5: The Story of a Movement is the previously untold story of the fi ght that inspired a hit and changed the American workplace.
WALK THE WALKMONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 10:30 PM
Walk the Walk showcases a unique college class where students have been going beyond talking about possible solutions to problems facing American society to implementing policy changes which get at their root causes. You will see a diverse range of students try to implement an innovative solution to devastation caused along the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, successfully raise the minimum wage in San Jose, California and develop policies to confront increasing cases of homelessness among college students. Walk the Walk provides a model for democracy to come alive in our nation’s classrooms and, in the process educating and invigorating students to improve their communities.
ANISFIELD-WOLF BOOK AWARDSSUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 6 PM
For the 85th annual Anisfi eld-Wolf Book Awards, Jury Chair Henry Louis Gates Jr. and the four 2020 winners historian Eric Foner, poet Ilya Kaminsky, scholar Charles King and novelist Namwali Serpell had to resort to meeting on Zoom. Hear what each had to say about their splendid books, our historic times and the global Black Lives Matter movement.
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: GOIN' BACK TO T-TOWNMONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 8 PM
This program explores the rise and decline of Greenwood, an extraordinary black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Greenwood had its heyday in the segregated era of the 1920s and 1930s, and by 1936 the neighborhood boasted the largest concentration of black businesses in the United States. However, it could not survive the progressive policies of integration and urban renewal of the 1960s. In a nostalgic celebration of old-fashioned neighborhood life, the black residents of T-Town relive their community's remarkable rise and ultimate decline. Ossie Davis narrates.

INDEPENDENT LENS: WOMEN IN BLUEMONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 9 PM
Women in Blue offers an unprecedented view into the inner workings of the Minneapolis Police Department, chronicling a department and a community grappling with racism and a troubled history of police misconduct long before an MPD offi cer was involved in the death of George Floyd in May 2020. The fi lm ultimately reveals the limitations of police reform through incremental change and asks questions that apply well beyond the city of Minneapolis. Could increased gender equity and more women, especially women of color, contribute to greater public safety?
FAT BOY: THE BILLY STEWART STORYSUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 6 PM
Fat Boy: The Billy Stewart Story chronicles the life and career of one of the most popular rhythm and blues singers of the 1960s, tracing his journey from a young piano player to a famous R&B balladeer. His electrifying and unique style of singing was untouchable as he mastered word doubling and scatting throughout his songs and performances. His original hits include I Do Love You, Sitting in the Park and his masterful remake of the Gershwin tune Summertime.
AMERICAN EXPERIENCEMARIAN ANDERSON: VOICE OF FREEDOMMONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 8 PM
Voice of Freedom explores the life, career, art and legacy of the singer of classical music and spirituals. Best known for her performance at the legendary Freedom Concert on April 9, 1939, Anderson, in a bold protest against racial intolerance, sang before a diverse crowd on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after being denied use of Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In that moment, Anderson despite being a fi ercely private person transformed into a symbol for the nascent civil rights movement, even inspiring a 10 year old Martin Luther King Jr. who listened on the radio.

NOTE FROM THE STATION MANAGER
Would Monty Python’s Flying Circus have been as popular without PBS? I can remember sitting on the back porch as a teenager watching WHYY’s airing of that British comedy show on a black and white portable TV. It didn’t take long to get hooked on their unique brand of humor.
Thanks to the generosity of members, WTVP is continuing the tradition of bringing British comedy to Central Illinois with the addition of two series. Starting February 6, Mr. Winnerjoins the Saturday evening lineup. The show is about Leslie Winner, who creates a bit of unintentional chaos in everyday situations. The series star, Spencer Jones, has been called “one of the funniest, most inventive comedians to have emerged in recent years.”
Once Mr. Winner has had its run, WTVP will air another British comedy series called Mum. The Guardian rated this series with fi ve stars and called it “magnifi cent TV that will put sunshine in your heart.” The story follows Cathy through a year of new beginnings as she rebuilds her life after the passing of her husband.
Thanks to your support, WTVP can bring our viewers programs like these from across the globe while continuing to produce local shows and documentaries. Let us know what you think of these and all of our programs at wtvp.org.

MISTER WINNERSATURDAYS 8:30 PM
This farcical comedy follows the ironically named Leslie Winner, a well-meaning optimist who frequently fi nds himself in the midst of chaos, through a combination of silly decisions and tough luck. However, the pressure is on now for Leslie to fi nally pull himself together, as he prepares for his wedding to beloved fi ancé Jemma and attempts to win over his skeptical father-in-law to be. The offi cial synopsis poses the question by the end of the series: "WillLeslie be a winner or will his surname continue to be ironic?"
MUMCOMING TO SATURDAYS IN APRIL
Mum is a British sitcom centered around recently widowed, suburban 59 year old Cathy (played by Lesley Manville) and her family, following her husband's death. The series features Cathy's supportive lifelong friend Michael (played by Peter Mullan), and her family: son Jason and his girlfriend Kelly, Cathy's brother Derek and his new partner Pauline, and Cathy's in-laws.

As a philanthropist, Lydia Moss Bradley donated the land for Laura Bradley Park, was instrumental in creating the current Children’s Home, became a board member of a large bank, paid the mortgage for the then Universalist Church, provided the house for the fi rst hospital of what is now OSF Saint Francis HealthCare and created a horology school that would later be incorporated into Bradley Polytechnic Institute. They could never have predicted what happened next.
THE ART OF DECEPTIONTHURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 8:30 PM
What are duck decoys, and how did they become sought-after collectibles? The Art of Deception looks at hand carved decoys as an underappreciated form of American folk art. Although the golden age of carving decoys ended with the age of plastics making cheaper and lighter decoys, the art form is still practiced today across the Illinois River Valley.

TELL YOUR UNIQUE STORY ON PBS AMERICAN PORTRAIT
WTVP
For fi ve decades, WTVP and PBS have aspired to represent American life in all its diversity. Through educational programming, entertainment and outreach, WTVP has exposed Central Illinois to people and perspectives from all over the world. Now you can return the favor.
Through a year-long crowdsourced storytelling project called PBS American Portrait, PBS has started a national conversation about what it means to be an American today. You are invited to add your story to the rich mosaic that makes up the American experience.
Intrigued? Think you have a story to tell? You can begin a journey of self-discovery at pbs.org/american-portrait. There you will fi nd pictures, videos and the words of individuals from across America, along with an opportunity to share your story with the world. I challenge you, as a WTVP viewer and member, to participate in the PBS American Portrait project. Even if you don’t contribute it’s worth a visit to the website to connect with others, watch the related docuseries that started last month and see that others are not so different from yourself.
Your interaction with PBS American Portrait may be the perfect antidote for our locked down, quarantined, socially distant world.

Mark your calendar for the 47th Annual WTVP Auction, Friday, April 23 - Sunday, April 25. To ensure social distancing and to keep our volunteers, donors and staff safe and healthy, WTVP will merge our on-air auction and our virtual online auction into one hybrid event. Donated items will be highlighted on-air each evening, April 23-25, but all items will be sold through our online auction.
This year WTVP will be creating special promotions for our donors and underwriters, from social media, eblasts, to our website and on-air recognition. There are even ways individuals can be part of the auction action by purchasing an item or certifi cate from your favorite business and donating it to the WTVP Auction. It's a win-win-win for you, for the business donating and for WTVP.
High Bidder pick up will be by appointment only following the auction. More details to come. Contact WTVP at 309.495.0547 or [email protected] to donate merchandise, certifi cates or to be a part of the WTVP Auction volunteer team!

BEYOND THE ELEMENTS: REACTIONSWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 8 PMJust about every solid, liquid or gas in the world as we know it begins with reactions between individual atoms and molecules. Host David Pogue dives into the transformative world of chemical reactions, from the complex formula that produces cement to the single reactionthat has allowed farmers to feed a global population by the billions—a reaction that, when reversed, unleashes the powerful chemistry of high explosives.
BEYOND THE ELEMENTS: INDESTRUCTIBLEWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 8 PMGlass so strong you can jump on it, rubber so tough it protects a clay pot dropped from 50 feet, endless varieties of plastic. Scientists and engineers have created virtually indestructible versions of common materials by manipulating the chains of interlocking atoms that give them strength, but have they made them too tough? Host David Pogue explores the fantastic chemistry behind the everyday materials we depend on, and how the quest for durability can be balanced with products’ environmental impact.
BEYOND THE ELEMENTS: LIFEWEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 8 PMWithout the chemistry of photosynthesis, ozone and a molecule called Rubisco, none of us would be here. So how did we get so lucky? To fi nd out, host David Pogue investigates the surprising molecules that allowed life on Earth to begin, and ultimately thrive. Along the way, he fi nds out what we are all made of—literally.
MARS 2020WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 8 PMFollow along as NASA launches the Mars 2020 Mission, perhaps the most ambitious hunt ever for signs of life on Mars. It will be the fi rst time a rover will land in Jezero Crater, an ancient river delta that could possibly be a cradle of life. Jezero is also one of the most dangerous areas for a spacecraft to land. If the landing is successful, a solar powered rover and a four pound helicopter will comb the area for signs of life until 2030 and collect samples for possible return to earth. Did life ever exist on the red planet? How would discovering evidence of it change our life here on earth?

WEDNESDAYS, FEBRUARY 3 – 17, 8 PMPicking up where he left off in NOVA’s popular special, Hunting the Elements, David Pogue sets out on a worldwide quest to fi nd the key molecules and chemical reactions that have paved the way for human civilization, life and even the universe as we know it. And along the way, he uncovers the simple principles that produce such a dizzying diversity of matter from elements on the periodic table.

LOCAL, USA: PANDEMIC19 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 8 PM
Pandemic19 captures the story of three doctors in the United States fi ghting COVID-19 from pre to post surge, told through their own refl ective, humanizing voices, while the chaos of the pandemic permeates outside the frame of their video confessions. As the days unfold, the doctors check in and record their changing impressions: fears, hopes, challenges and triumphs. They are unfi ltered and subjective. The doctors’ intimate video confessionals are contrasted with the serene and surreal landscapes of a country under quarantine.
AMERICA REFRAMED: PAHOKEETUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 7 PM
In a small agricultural town in the Florida Everglades, hopes for the future are concentrated on the youth. Four teens face heartbreak and celebrate in the rituals of an extraordinary senior year. From sports events to school beauty contests, the fi lmmakers observe how, through social and collective rituals, the ideas of gender and identity are publicly displayed while creating new narratives. Pahokee is a powerful portrait of a forgotten America absent from the current political discourse.
STORIES FROM THE STAGE MONDAYS 8:30 PM
For Black History Month, Stories from the Stage will premiere Growing Up Black, Pt. 2 (February 15) and Good Kind of Trouble (February 22). The late John Lewis took pride in creating what he called “good trouble.” By this, he meant standing up against unfair laws and power structures to bring justice for minorities. Three tellers share stories of those times when they stirred up some “good trouble” of their own. Featuring Ronald Smith, Wanda Castro-Borrero and Maulian Dana. Hosted by Theresa Okokon.
