February Best of the Month Nominations

Congratulations to Carla Hinton, selected Best Overall for February. In hisnomination, Features Editor Matt Price wrote that Carla is always very focused onthe needs of the faith community, which is a huge art of our readershi. But shedoesn!t only ta"e time to hear concerns from the largest voices. #nyone with a

suggestion or concern on the religion beat gets an oortunity to share theirthoughts. Carla regularly attends events after hours and on wee"ends, if necessary,to "ee in contact with various faith grous. $ometimes, it!s not even for aarticular story, but %ust so that they will "now she is aware of their community. Inaddition, in February, she!s wor"ed e&tensively on the 'oliday (orshi )uide, sea"ing with a variety of contacts as she created a stand*alone section celebratingChristian and +ewish sring holidays.

'er willingness to connect with customers goes beyond her beat. One morning inFebruary, as the only reorter on hand, Carla was as"ed to tal" to a man who hadcome to the front door with concerns about his neighbors! otentially sying on him.Carla was attentive and resectful, and gave the man helful suggestions that

allowed him to have a ositive e&erience with he O"lahoman.

-For all she does to lift the image of he O"lahoman in ublic, I don!t believe anyonecarries the mantle of being customer focused better than Carla 'inton, Matt says.

Best "esign'(llustrationFrom: Su1anne /reenNominee: Su1anne /reenFor the centeriece illustration design for the story J# nerd in loveJ from 8enKaymonds Purely $ub%ective column.

his was a really fun illustration. he style of the iece was "et loose to mimic theage at which the story haened. Everything was hand drawn including theheadline tye to "ee the style layful and unolished. he color scheme wassimle only using red, the color of loveD to call out a few details without

bombarding the reader with too much traditional valentine art. he bac"ground ofthe image was intended to loo" li"e aged aer li"e a note saved for several yearsto lay oL the fact that this story haened in 8ens childhood. Overall there wereseveral details that came directly from the story to "ee the reader engaged withthe illustration as they read along, including the curly hair, thic" JnerdyJ glasses, and the little note folded origami style into its own enveloe. I thin" the simlicity of the illustration style was a big art of what made this such an eye catching design.

+udges also selected this because of the high uality of hand*drawn wor" donebefore deadline.
