From the Principal Welcome to the February 2019 edition of the AusIS Newsletter. I am happy to announce that we are resuming the monthly publication of the Newsletter after a significant gap. I apologize for not being able to organize its regular publication with the hope that from now onwards Newsletter will be brought out regularly every month. Academic year 2018-19 started well with fresh enthusiasm after the children had a long summer holiday. Despite lots of construction work and dust rising in front of the school, we have been able to maintain the planned program pretty well. We have had more than 100 new admissions for the academic year 2018-19 in different classes. We extend a warm welcome to those students and hope that they would soon be integrated fully into our curriculum. A number of new teachers also joined the school including IBDP coordinator. During the first term we successfully conducted PYP and MYP orientation with the parents and also had three-way conferences with them. We observed the Anti-Bulling Day where children of different classes put up impressive displays and presentations highlighting the negativity of undesirable bullies by buddies, seniors or anyone in the school. We observed 15th of August as National Mourning Day in remembrance of the sad demise of the Father of the Nation. In term 2, the school conducted WACE Examinations. We have had MYP Science Fair where participation was enthusiastic and overwhelming. Many bright ideas emerged and students enjoyed being innovative. PYP students smartly conducted the “student led conference” with great success. The children had a fun mixed celebration of Halloween as teachers and students dressed up in different costumes made the environment scary yet entertaining. A new generator was procured thereby solving the shortfall of electricity in the school. Semesters final examinations were completed by 1st week of December and the term ended in a high note with celebration of the Victory Day and Winter Carnival. A short talk on Liberation War was delivered by a guest speaker and children participated in a musical soiree rejoicing the victory in our Liberation struggle and also welcoming the arrival of winter and the Christmas. The concerned teachers deserved an applaud for the wonderfully planning and organising the event. The school also organized an Annual Picnic for all teachers and staffs which was a great entertainment with plenty of fun and frolic. Term 3 till February was packed with different events. WACE graduation took place on 25 th of January among reasonable fanfare. Parents of the graduating students, teachers and students of senior classes and some members of the school management were present on the occasion. The school had to cancel the Annual sports as the sports ground was unfit due to construction works in front of the school. However, this was compensated well by celebration of Boshonto Utshob, Pitha Utshob and observance of International Mother Language day in a befitting manner. Cultural events were organized and children came in relevant attire making these events more meaningful. However, the Annual Concert of the school had to be shifted to first week of March due to non-availability of appropriate venue. Of late we are trying to emphasise on dressing up appropriately for the school. Shabby and under/oversized uniforms speak of bad etiquette and discipline. School uniforms are well specified and students must take responsibility in dressing up correctly and appropriately for the school. From the Principal

Welcome to the February 2019 edition of the AusIS Newsletter. I am happy to announce that we are resuming the monthly publication of the Newsletter after a significant gap.

I apologize for not being able to organize its regular publication with the hope that from now onwards Newsletter

will be brought out regularly every month.

Academic year 2018-19 started well with fresh enthusiasm after the children had a long summer holiday. Despite

lots of construction work and dust rising in front of the school, we have been able to maintain the planned

program pretty well. We have had more than 100 new admissions for the academic year 2018-19 in different

classes. We extend a warm welcome to those students and hope that they would soon be integrated fully into our curriculum. A number of new teachers also joined the school including IBDP coordinator.

During the first term we successfully conducted PYP and MYP orientation with the parents and also had

three-way conferences with them. We observed the Anti-Bulling Day where children of different classes put up impressive displays and presentations highlighting the negativity of undesirable bullies by buddies, seniors or

anyone in the school. We observed 15th of August as National Mourning Day in remembrance of the sad demise

of the Father of the Nation.

In term 2, the school conducted WACE Examinations. We have had MYP Science Fair where participation was

enthusiastic and overwhelming. Many bright ideas emerged and students enjoyed being innovative. PYP students

smartly conducted the “student led conference” with great success. The children had a fun mixed celebration of

Halloween as teachers and students dressed up in different costumes made the environment scary yet entertaining. A new generator was procured thereby solving the shortfall of electricity in the school. Semesters final

examinations were completed by 1st week of December and the term ended in a high note with celebration of the

Victory Day and Winter Carnival. A short talk on Liberation War was delivered by a guest speaker and children

participated in a musical soiree rejoicing the victory in our Liberation struggle and also welcoming the arrival of winter and the Christmas. The concerned teachers deserved an applaud for the wonderfully planning and

organising the event. The school also organized an Annual Picnic for all teachers and staffs which was a great

entertainment with plenty of fun and frolic.

Term 3 till February was packed with different events. WACE graduation took place on 25 th of January among

reasonable fanfare. Parents of the graduating students, teachers and students of senior classes and some members

of the school management were present on the occasion. The school had to cancel the Annual sports as the sports

ground was unfit due to construction works in front of the school. However, this was compensated well by celebration of Boshonto Utshob, Pitha Utshob and observance of International Mother Language day in a

Of late we are trying to emphasise on dressing up appropriately for the school. Shabby and under/oversized

Pitha Utshob On 29 January Year 3 students initiated a “Pitha Utshob” (traditional

cake festival) as a part of their Unit of Inquiry 4- How We Express

Ourselves. Through this celebration, students explored one of the

cultural heritages of Bangladesh. All the PYP students participated

in that event.

Students brought in pithas with great excitement to exhibit their

family tradition. The event started with the significance of Pitha

Utshob read both in Bangla and English. Later, Year 3 students

demonstrated the process of pitha making. There were more than 25

types of delicious pithas auch as: bhapa pitha, patisapta, dudh puli,

chitoi pitha, chiruni pitha, jhal pitha, shahi tukra, mug pakon pitha ,

different types of nokshi pitha, etc. Moreover, students and teachers

were dressed in traditional clothes. The popular Bangla songs added

more delight to the enthusiasm of the Pitha Utshob.

In short, this gave an opportunity to celebrate our tradition of winter

Pitha Utshob.

Year 5 Excursion to the Base camp On January 31st the Year 5 students went for an educational

trip to the Basecamp at Gazipur. The objective of this tour

was students’ skill development.

This is the first time the PYP students went for a 2 days long

trip outside Dhaka. This trip helped the students to utilize

their thinking and self-management skills. They worked in

different group set up and accomplished different physical

activities, like; zip lines, team building, forest trekking,

football and many more. Different game situations enabled

the students to use and develop their analytical and problem

solving skills.

Zara from Year 5B was awarded as the Best Camper.

Middle Years Programme

Our MYP students inquire and pursue

their interest for meaningful learning

which goes beyond classroom doors and

curriculum scope.

Year 9’ diet plan for the elderly generation

based on locally grown food

AusIS goes OK!

Two Year 10 students were spotted distributing copies of OK! Bangladesh magazine. Adib Hasan and Akhtab Khan are not only the distributors, but active contributors and creators of the magazine. It is great to see that the students have pursued their dream to publish a printed magazine and have succeeded with their first issue. Let us wish them a lot of creative ideas for the coming issues.

Sustainable world!

Year 10 students did an inquiry based project on growing

challenges faced globally and how to make a positive difference.

Designing products!

Year 7 and 8 students understand the markets and trends to design a packaging that is practical yet creative. They also created a digital version of the design along with a prototype of their final design concept.

SEM tournament!

Year 9 students have captured their team spirit

post participation in the SEM tournament with

coaches.

Health for elders!

Year 9 students created an advertisement campaign for both

print and social media. The topic is to design a diet plan for the

elderly generation based on locally grown food.

We are principled and uphold academic honesty

Students research to complete assignment and project work

across MYP year levels using internet and print sources. They are

learning to cite information, present references and bibliography

using MLA 8 format. It is important for students as principled

learners to act with integrity and give credit to other’s ideas

when they use them in their work.

We will request you to support us in our effort to encourage

your child to maintain academic honesty at school and beyond.

17th January 2019 Graffiti

Graffiti is a form of art that is usually done on walls. The IB DP Year 1 students selected the school’s mascot 'Eagle' for the CAS group ac-tivity. The Eagle symbolises power and wisdom which represents the school’s motto “Together We Achieve”. The students presented their creative skills through this art work thus enabling them to work collaboratively while respecting each other’s

opinion.

13th February 2019 Pohela Falgun

Pohela Falgun, also known as the first day of the spring in Bangladesh is the King of all Seasons and the epitome of gracefulness. To welcome this day with joy and happiness, the students of IB DP Year 1 organised a fundraising 'The Bake Sale'. The students worked diligently in arranging the entire event and was a huge success. The money raised from the event will be utilised for the project 'building homes for the needy' run by a Non Governmental Organization "Habitat of Humanity".

14th February 2019 WACE Graduation

WACE Graduation Ceremony was momentous with a mixed feeling of happiness and sadness as the Senior Batch of WACE 2018 took their final step to receive their graduation certificates from the Principal. As the ceremony commenced, there was a mist of bitter-sweetness. The graduating students presented wonderful speeches about their lifelong journey and experience at AusIS. Lot of appreciation for the students was bestowed by the parents and teachers gathered for the graduation ceremony in the courtyard of AusIS.

21st February 2019 International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day was a joyous day yet, a day to remember the souls who gave up their lives for their mother tongue, Bangla. Students from all years gathered together to mark this important day by placing flowers in front of the makeshift monument depicting the 'Shahid Minar'. The entire AusIS community wore black and white attire thus bringing the feeling of respect and grief of all the departed souls. The day was commemorated for the martyred souls by poem recitation, short skit, and a Bangla song making the atmosphere very nostalgic.
