and Ben/Brian took the

stage to answer questions

covering German Cities, and

foreign currencies in the first

two rounds.

Peter and Sue were the first

to leave caused in part by

Sue who decided that be-

cause Gwilym, her husband,

watched a lot of football she

should attempt a football

related question. It was un-

fortunately wrong. The

round on foreign currencies

saw Martyn and Douglas

eliminated when they joined

the exclusive 200 club with

two wrong answers!!!! We

were now in the Head to

Head. Ben and Brian took

the first question but

Terry and Alice fought back

to level the score.

The deciding question went

to Brian and Ben who

claimed the pointless trophy

and a chance to win the cash

prize in the final.

The final could not have

been scripted any better. It

was essential that at least

Monday 7th January 2013,

the first meeting of the year

for the El-Valle Asociación,

where do the years go!!!!!!

The Camping Bar, our usual

venue, were not quite ready

for us when the first of us

arrived to start setting the

stage for the meeting and

also an adaptation of the

BBC quiz show, POINTLESS.

The reason given was that

this date the 7th was a fiesta

day and our room had been

in use all day for celebra-

tions. Your forward thinking

committee had queried this

point 3 months ago to avoid

any problems. The staff

however quickly cleared the

room and arranged tables

and chairs to our require-

ments.

By 7.30pm in excess of 80

members were present and

the meeting was opened by

Jane who gave the usual

overview of coming events,

in particular the Doñana

National Park four day trip in

April. This is selling fast so

don't miss the boat, or in

this case coach, get your

name down. All event infor-

mation is available on the

website in the newsletter

and at the Friday market,

Puente don Manuel.

It was also pointed out by

Sue, newsletter editor, that

our recent change of web-

site may have caused small

problems for some mem-

bers accessing the newslet-

ter. If you are affected

please contact a committee

member who will pass on

details to Sue who will en-

deavour to correct things for

you.

At 7.45 it was time for yours

truly and Peter Goreham to

be introduced as co-

presenters of El-Valle Point-

less. We had planned to

adapt the popular BBC quiz

show to a live El-Valle show,

BUT, to follow the TV ver-

sion as close as possible.

This entailed prop making,

question gathering, contest-

ant selecting and some

amount of rehearsing al-

though both Peter and my-

self decided that on the

night ad-libbing was proba-

bly the way to go.

Our contestants, Terry/Alice,

Martyn/Douglas, Peter/Sue

Welcome to our new look newsletter, I do hope you enjoy the new format and find it easy to

navigate around the pages. We have taken the opportunity of updating the format, it seemed a

good opportunity as we are introducing a brand new website.

I would very much welcome your feedback on both the newsletter and the website, I don’t

profess to have got it right first time but hope I will improve as time goes on.

If you have any short stories, articles or recipes you would like to see included, please send them

to me and I will be only too happy to include them.

JANUARY MEETING REPORT

one answer given from the three

had to be pointless in order to win.

Three answers were duly given

concerning squares on the monop-

oly board. The first two answers

dropped to 2 and 1 points respec-

tively.

The final answer went all the way

down to 0. We really could not

believe how this had worked. The

show seemed to have been a suc-

cess indeed as they left one couple

said at times they thought

they were watching the show on

television.!!!!!!!!!

No-one went away empty handed,

each contestant received a uniquely

labelled bottle of wine.

Thanks to all the contestants above

who put themselves in the firing

line, Peter who was solely responsi-

ble for the prop making, also Steve

(Padley) whose Weakest Link po-

dium made a re-appearance and all

the committee and members who were

there to ensure a good night.

I appreciate that some people may

have a life!!!!! and not know what the

Pointless Quiz is about, if so have a

look, BBC TV every weekday 6.15pm

and all will be revealed.

It was then time to open the

box which this month stood

at €895, and as the amount had not

reached the €1000 mark only the usual

5 keys were drawn. Sadly there were

no winners and the amount rolls over

to the February meeting.

two of our walkers, who could, had they

known, probably have had a little longer

in bed and joined us as we passed.

It was good to see the almond blossom

out, and after a chilly start, we all

warmed up as gentle up gradients made

their way into the route.

We continued through the country side

on tracks and paths and eventually made

our way round to Los Romanes again in

time to enjoy a good menu Del Dia at

Miguel’s (El-Charco). The walk was 7.5

kms and took just over two hours of gen-

tle walking and view stops.

Thanks to Stewart and Elaine for their

efforts and a reminder that anyone is

welcome to offer to route and lead a

walk. The only responsibility you have is

the walk route, everyone who attends

does so freely with no obligation to you.

Forthcoming El-Valle Walk de-

tails:

February 14th - Led by

Barbarann Newman and Ian Taylor.

The start of the walk will be from

the lower car park of Almachar at

11.00am.

March 14th - Led by Douglas and

Jane Johnson. The start of the walk

will be from the lower car park of

Vinuela village at 11.00am.

May 9th - Led by Martyn and

Rebbecca Higgins. The start of the

walk will be in the Alcaucin Natural

Park area above Alcaucin at

11.00am. More details to follow.

Should anyone have a favourite

walk they wish to lead and intro-

duce to the other walkers of the

group please let Stewart Common

know so he can plan it into the

monthly schedule. Look forward to

seeing you all again on the next

walk.

This month’s el-Valle walk was routed

and led by Stewart and Elaine and

took place Thursday January 10th.

The walkers gathered at 11am out-

side Miguel’s (El Charco) restaurant

at Los Romanes.

Thirty two started the walk on a

lovely sunny, but a little chilly, day

and thirty four finished the walk???

Two walkers could not make the start

time but were committed enough to

seek us out to join in the last third of

the walk.

We set off from the start and headed

north down the lane towards the

Embalse and after passing through a

small hamlet left the lane for a track

running towards the west. We even-

tually passed close to the home of

Our “PHOTO OF THE YEAR 2012”

was won this year by

Chris Pegman.

His entry (photo 16) was one of

twenty three that were entered.

Chris was awarded the trophy at

This month (February) we are visiting

Málaga for a day long photoshoot at

the Motor Museum and the Market.

Later in the month we will be hosting

a four club photographic competition.

Each club will be entering twelve

photo’s, ours being selected from a

short list of nineteen, an improve-

ment on last years third place would

be welcome. A full report in next

month’s newsletter.

Our December challenge of “In the

style of Charlie Waite”, a world re-

nowned landscape photographer, was

certainly out of our comfort zone,

however, there were a few good at-

tempts to emulate the great man. The

following are two of the better photos

submitted.

SUPPER & FILM NIGHT by Alan Impey

The latest El-Valle venture

into the world of film and

supper took place Friday

18th January 2013 at Chirin-

guito Antonio's, Puente don

Manuel.

The featured film was Knight

and Day, a comedy thriller

starring Tom Cruise and

Cameron Diaz. This was the

second on screen collabora-

tion between Cruise and

Diaz, the first being in Vanilla

Sky in 2001. Knight and Day

was first released in June

2010 and has a run time of

110 minutes.

It was mainly filmed in Mas-

sachusetts although there is

some local interest for us in

that some filming took place

in Seville and Cadiz. The

films soundtrack "Someday"

was performed by Black

Eyed Peas.

7pm was the assembly time

but I chose to arrive early

with a view to helping in the

Have you had time to look at our

new website? www.ell-valle-

asociacion.com

In my January contribution I did

ask for nominations for committee

members for the forthcoming

year, it is appropriate at this time

for me to say that I took on this

role on the understanding that it

would be for one year only!! That

year is almost up and it is not my

intention to stand again, whilst I

have thoroughly enjoyed the year

there are other factors that pre-

vent me from carrying on in this

role. So please do give some

thought to becoming a member of

this most valuable committee.

What an enjoyable evening we

had on our last club night,

thanks to Alan Impey and Peter

Goreham for putting together a

most professional quiz. If there

is anyone out there who would

like to do something similar

please let a member of the com-

mittee know, all contributions

greatly appreciated!!!

May I take this opportunity to

send Pauline Griffiths and Pat

Marshall our “get well wishes”.

Pat suffered an accident whilst

on our Christmas trip to Rute,

damaging her shoulder quite

badly. She is now in the UK hav-

ing treatment – we wish them

both a speedy recovery. Pauline

had a nasty fall before Christmas

and is slowly recovering, having

been in a wheel chair since then.

set up!!! IT WAS ALL DONE;

Stewart and Elaine had sorted

everything. There were 26 in the

audience and the plan was for

the meal to be had first, followed

by the film. As the food was be-

ing served Elaine and Kim helped

the waitress in the service.

Chicken and patas pobres or fish

and patas pobres were on offer

and although I did not hear any

complaints about the food itself

there were a few comments that

it could have been hotter. An ice

cream desert was also served.

The film started about 8.15 and

it was indeed a fast moving ac-

tion/comedy thriller. One couple

did leave early but without com-

plaint, just that it was not theire

type of film!!!

Around 10pm the film finished

and listening to folk as they left it

was obvious that the film had

been well received.

Several of us helped in taking

down the equipment but credit

where credit is due and the bulk

of the work had been done by

Stewart and Elaine, so thanks to

them. Another successful event

for El-Valle.

IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION

FROM MARIO BLANKE

lished by the “Consejo de Em-

padronamiento” (Registration Council) from the

ceeding to update the Municipal Register-

“Padrón Municipal”. Therefore, the Town Hall

To accomplish with this obligation, we ask you

to appear with your passport and NIE or Certifi-

Below is an excerpt from the New Euro-pean Directive which came into force on

19th January.

If you would like to read the whole direc-tive click on the link:

19 January 2013 will see the introduction of a European driving licence as part of the entry into force of the third EU Driv-ing Licence Directive. The new rules will guarantee a true freedom of movement to EU drivers, reinforce safety on Euro-pean roads and reduce possibilities of fraud.

What are the main changes introduced by the new legislation on driving li-cences?

A New European Driving Licence Card.

To limit the number of different licence models that are in circulation, and to better protect against fraud, the paper driving licence model shall be phased-out. The only European driving licence model to be issued shall be a plastic 'credit' card type, already used in most EU countries, which allows for greater protection against forgery. Current paper

who had earned himself a reputa-

tion for keeping his last quad

cleaner than anyone else’s, joined in

the mud bath by christening his new

quad in style! (see photo). He

claimed that the route from Guaro

to Mondron was specially chosen so

that we could enjoy seeing his quad

disappear under a layer of mud...

would we do such a thing?!

Another fun moment occurred on

the road down from Comares. Brian

was leading (at a sensible pace)

This month has been one of extremes.

There was a long warm, settled spell of

weather when we were able to ven-

ture out to a range of destinations

including Alfarnatejo (see photo), the

coast, Comares, Canillas de Albaida

and Benamargosa. One outing ended

at Klaus and Angelika’s house where

we were invited to pick as many beau-

tiful mandarins as we wanted, fol-

lowed by refreshments on their sunny

and warm terrace! A few days later

someone must have flicked a switch

and we were faced by day after day of

strong winds and horizontal rain!

On occasion we have had to cancel our

planned outing due to dangerously

strong winds and rain. However the

unsettled weather has had the positive

effect of making some of our routes

more interesting- dust has been re-

placed by mud and plenty of it! Brian,

Q U A D D I A R Y B y C h r i s P e g m a n

driving licences will stop being issued from the entry into force of the new legislation.

Introduction of a compulsory adminis-trative renewal for all new licences

A mandatory and regular administrative renewal of driving

licences will ensure that all documents in circulation can be updated using the most up-to-date security features. Reduc-ing the number of licence models will ease enforcement, and so will the greater likeness of the holder of the photo on the licence.

All new licences for mopeds, motorcy-cles, cars, tricycles and quadricy-cles shall have a maximum administra-tive validity of 10 years. However Mem-ber States may choose to issue such li-cences with an administrative validity of up to 15 years.

All new driving licences for trucks and buses shall have a maximum administra-tive validity of 5 years.

Drivers with licences issued before the entry into force of this Directive will be subject to the new rules on validity at the latest by 19 January 2033.

The main principle will be that all licences issued as of the date of application of the new Directive will remain valid as stipu-

lated on the driving licence. Before expiry, the holder will have to renew the driving li-cence in the country where he is having his normal residence. From that date, the host Mem-ber State will apply the new administrative validity period and is allowed to impose a medical check if this is foreseen for its own citizens. These pro-visions will finally provide the necessary legal security for the holder of a driving licence.

With regard to the driving li-cences issued before the date of application of the current Directive and which are still valid and in circulation, all these driving licences will have to be replaced by a new driving licence at the latest by 2033. A Member State may also request that, as from two years after taking up residence in its coun-try, the holder of a driving li-cence issued by another Mem-ber State without the validity periods prescribed by the Direc-tive (e.g. indefinite validity pe-riod) renew his/her licence.

New European driving licence for more security, safety and free movement

when we were overtaken by a solitary

push bike! At the debrief Brian came in

for some good-natured joshing but we

decided that it must have been Lance

Armstrong at (or should that be on?)

speed, trying to escape from Oprah Win-

frey!

To quench our need for speed we took in

a demonstration of racing style quads by

Spy Racing ([email protected]) (see

photo). They certainly looked and

sounded the business but the few milli-

metres of ground clearance wouldn’t have

suited our style of quadding!

The Spanish Government passed on

the 15th of November 2012 a Royal

Decree providing the liabilities

to inform about assets and rights

located abroad. This information is

available at http://www.boe.es/boe/

dias/2012/11/24/pdfs/BOE-A-2012-

14452.pdf.

This liability only affects resident

taxpayers; non-residents are not li-

able for submitting this tax return.

Any account in financial institutions

and any kind of real property or real

property rights of ownership shall be

declared, as well as any securities,

interests, insurances and incomes,

which are deposited, managed or

obtained abroad.

Taxpayers shall inform about these

assets and rights which they own

abroad as at 31st of December 2012.

This tax return shall include any kind

of assets and rights provided that the

individual value for each of themex-

ceeds EUR 50,000. This includes the

following:

- All accounts in financial institu-

tions—account balances as at 31st of

December and average balances for

the last quarter.

- Real property, indicating the

purchase date and acquisition value.

- Real property rights of owner-

ship, indicating the opening or can-

cellation date.

- Securities, interests, insurances

and incomes which are deposited, man-

aged or obtained abroad as at 31st of

December of each year.

The submission of this informative tax

return in successive years is only com-

pulsory when the established limit have

increased more than EUR 20,000.

The requirements of this tax liability

shall be met between the 1st of Janu-

ary and the 31st of March in the follow-

ing year to which this information re-

fers.

This tax liability refers to both individual

residents and bodies corporate which

are liable for corporate tax in Spain. Tax

form 720 shall be electronically submit-

ted to fulfill the requirements of this tax

return.

The recent approval of this tax liability

to inform about assets located abroad

represents a new control method for

liable taxpayers in order to uncover

informal economy, tax evasion and

money laundering.

Fines are significant and they do not

refer to the legal o illegal way of obtain-

ing those assets, but to the fact that

they are declared or not. The failure to

submit the informative tax return will

be considered a very serious infringe-

ment and the corresponding sanctions

will be applied. This implies the pay-

ment of a EUR 5,000 set fine for each

point of information which is not de-

clared and the minimum fine

amounts to EUR 10,000. The fine

for individual taxpayers amounts

to EUR 100 for each point of in-

formation and the minimum fine

amounts to EUR 1,500, where

the informative tax return had

been submitted after the dead-

line without previous notification

from the Spanish Tax Authority.

It is worth stressing the heavy

fines, including for declaration of

imprecise information. The

above mentioned Royal Decree

does not allow misunderstand-

ings. A single mistake may result

in a heavy fine. The declaration

of incomplete or imprecise infor-

mation entails the same sanc-

tions. The fact that these assets

are correctly declared in the

country of origin will never be

considered a ground for exclud-

ing the liability to pay the fine.

It is also determined that the tax

liability to inform shall not be

time-barred in respect to the

date of origin of the assets and

the application of this rule.

If this is your case, please do not

wait any longer and prepare all

the necessary information for

submission to the Spanish Tax

Authority in the following days.
