Ferryhill Town Band, who have been in existence for over 100 years, is looking for Brass band players of

any standard, young and old. The band is active in the local area, appearing

every year at the Remem-brance day parade, Durham Miners’ Gala and supporting local community events throughout Ferryhill. The band normally has 26 players of all ages and abilities, however the band has recently lost players due to work and college commitments which has left them short of players in all sections of the band.Young or old, beginner or pro, Ferryhill Town Band is interested in hearing from anyone who wishes to become involved in brass band music and who is willing to join them for future engagements. New recruits do not even need to own an instrument - they can use one of those already owned by the band. Local Ferryhill Councillor finedFerryhill town and Durham County councillor David Farry from Laburnum Road, Ferryhill, admitted two driving offences by post at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates recently. He admitted driving without insurance and failing to produce an insurance certificate. Mag-

istrates were told Farry was stopped by police driving his Volvo car in Wood Lane, Ferryhill, on January 17th. He was given six penalty points and fined £250 with £100 costs. Afterwards, Mr Farry said the insurance had expired owing to an administration error.

The club steward of Ferryhill Station W.M.C. in Louvaine Terrace, William Fox, admitted driving without insurance, driving without due care and attention, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report it when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates court recently. Fox had parked his BMW in Asda car park in Spennymoor and had clipped a Jaguar

car while reversing out. The driver of the Jaguar car reported the damage to the car to the store and the CCTV cameras were able to identify Fox as the culprit.Representing himself, Fox said a white van was parked on one side and he had not seen the Jaguar on the other and he simply panicked and drove off. He received six penalty points, was fined £340 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.

In response to the letter I read in Issue 571 (4th May, 2012) I would like to suggest that if Ferryhill Town Council want a trainee gardener and had one employed as an apprentice a couple of years ago, why not let this young lad finish his apprenticeship and get his qualification, and by doing so take the young lad off JSA?

Can anyone enlighten me regarding the ongoing roadworks at Thinford?

These roadworks, which appear to get more complicated by the day, have me totally baffled. What is the purpose and expected outcome of the mayhem that reigns at Thinford?

For months, regular travellers have endured delays and frustration at the lack of progress being made. It would appear that there is still no end in sight. Is anyone out there privy to the great master plan? When are we likely to see an end to it all?

In my opinion the only winners of this ridiculous fiasco are the manufacturers of traffic cones, which must surely be in short supply across the rest of the country.

Over 1,000 people have signed a petition urging Durham County Council to cancel plans to change the opening hours at Ferryhill Library.With cuts of nearly £190m needed by 2017, Durham County Council launched a three-month public con-sultation last February to discuss plans to cut opening times to 36 hours a week at 11 town centre libraries and 20 hours a week at 27 community libraries.

In total, over 6,000 people across the county took part in the public consultation. The plans would see Ferryhill Library’s hours cut by half.Councillor Brian Avery said: “I would like to express deep concern at the proposed cuts suggested for this excellent provision.“I would also like to appeal against the dramatic 53 per cent cut in the delivery of the library service that would seriously affect the massive benefit that the library provides for both our surrounding villages and our town.“A great number of people of all ages and walks of life depend on our library, not only as a vital source of information gathering and sharing, gaining access to equipment and books they would not normally have, and an excellent

resource used by all the local schools, but also as a social venue, which we feel should be revered and not lost.”Cllr David Farry had previously supported a Labour plan to save Ferryhill Library at the expense of West Cornforth and Chilton libraries but after that proposal was dropped, he said that if anything the cuts should be shared evenly.Gerald Tompkins, the council’s head of social inclusion, said: “It’s extremely important to us that we understand how proposed changes to library opening hours might impact on local people. “We will now begin the task of carefully examining all the feedback before a decision is made by cabinet in July.”Up to 250 library staff could be affected by the plans.

Thinford roundabout - the next stageMotorists are being urged to plan alternative routes while the final stage of improvements, which have disrupted the area for several months, is carried out at the new Thinford roundabout.As part of the highways enhancements linked to the DurhamGate develop-ment, drivers are being given advance notice that the A167 between Thinford and Croxdale roundabout will be closed for one weekend later this month.The closure will be in

place from 8pm on Friday 18th May until 8pm Sunday 20th May and is required to allow the completion of the surfacing at the Coach & Horses roundabout and associated road markings. Hett Lane and York Hill Road will also be closed during this time.An alternative route will be available for vehicles approaching from the southern side of the closure, from the A167 Thinford roundabout westerly along the A688 to the Merrington Lane roundabout at Low Spennymoor, then northerly along the B6288 North Road through Tudhoe Colliery to the A167 at Croxdale to the northern side of the closure, and vice versa. Access from York Hill Road to the A167 is either north along the B6288 or south via the B6288 and east along the A688. Access from Hett to the A167 is via Sunderland Bridge or Leemans Lane to the A688.

Enter CIC, the Ferryhill-based Community Interest Company, will soon be embarking on rehearsals for their summer production, The Wind Road Boys, an original musical which tells the story of mining through the ages, but mostly through a child miner’s eyes. The performance will premiere at the Sunderland Empire on 7th August. The musical will feature about 160 children from in and around the town, as well as well-known actors. Enter CIC director Andrea Flynn said the show will be produced by industry professionals: “The basic story is about a guy who

has been left some land, in a will, from a long-lost relative he does not know,” she explains, “but we have collected stories from people who live in towns and mining villages to go in, too. “The stories are fantastic and one of the children has been talking to their granddad, who won the George Cross following a mining disaster, which we are going to integrate into the plot.” Mrs Flynn said it was not too late for young people to get involved, regardless of their acting or singing ability: “We are trying to get as many young people from as many mining

communities involved as possible and we try to do it at little or no cost to them,” she said. “A Wind Road Boy is another name for a Trapper,” explains the company’s website. “A Trapper was a child employed to work down the mines in complete darkness for up to 12 or more hours a day, every day. Give back to the earth County Durham residents are being urged to ‘give back to the earth’ by taking up composting. This week (Sunday, 6th May to Saturday, 12th May) is Compost Awareness Week.Composting is an inex-pensive, natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for garden soil. Home composting helps the environment too by reducing the amount of household and garden waste disposed of in landfill sites. It’s not difficult to compost at home, all that’s needed is an outside space and a bin and the nutritious free compost produced can be used on flower beds, vegetable plots and hanging baskets. A wormery is also an ideal alternative for people who don’t produce very much garden waste or have limited outside space. Durham County Council’s waste strategy and policy officer Rachel Gatland said: “Around one third of the contents of an average UK household bin can be composted at home. This includes vegetable peelings, tea bags, cardboard, shredded paper and even coffee grounds.”

Residents who already compost could also join the Master Composters during Compost Awareness Week. These compost champions are community volunteers who help raise awareness of the benefits of home composting to residents across County Durham. Anyone needing tips on getting started with a composting project can pop along to the Farmers Market at Durham City Market Place on Thursday, 17th May between 10am and 3pm. Representa-tives from Durham County

Council’s strategic waste management team and the Master Composter volunteers will be providing help and advice. Durham County Council is also offering composting bins at discounted prices. When Formica, a local firm based at Newton Aycliffe Industrial Estate, heard that Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College were looking to replace all of their worktops in two of their food technology classrooms, they offered to help. They were able to replace all of the worktops in one classroom free of charge and charged a minimal amount for the other classroom. Brian Umpleby, from Formica, has been paramount to the project taking place and Governors

and staff from the school would like to pass on their thanks to him and his or-ganisation for their kind gesture. Christine Bennett, Director of Learning Technology, said: “The new work surfaces have been noticed and appreciated by both staff and students. “The modern surfaces have been a huge step towards bringing the rooms up to date, not only in image but also in function. “In both of the food rooms, students now have a clearly defined practical work area which is easily kept clean

and hygienic. Nellie celebrates her hundredth birthday with Chilton Mayor, Maureen Errington.

For the second time in a month the mayor of Chilton Town Council, Maureen Errington, visited Guardian Care Home in Chilton to present a lovely bouquet of flowers, this time to Nellie Burton who celebrated her 100th birthday on 4th May 2012. Only three weeks earlier Alice Skene, who also resides in the same home, was 102.Nellie was born in Darlington and raised in the Harrogate Hill area. Her father passed away when she was quite young and her mother died when she was only 12, so Nellie’s auntie, who was also called Nellie, moved into their home and, between the two of them, they cared

for her brother and three sisters.She married her first husband George in London after a five year courtship, and they had two daughters Cynthia and the late Patricia. They were married for six years before George, an RAF pilot was killed in the First World War.Nellie moved back to the North East settling in Durham Road, Chilton. In her 40s she met and married her second husband Alf, known as Ike. He worked in the mines and later Eaton Axles in Aycliffe Industrial Estate. Ike passed away 15 years ago.Nellie worked at Sedgefield Hospital as a domestic and also in the canteen at

the United Bus Company offices in Grange Road, Darlington. Later she was a cleaner at Chilton library, which was only a few yards from her home. Nellie has six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In early times, Nellie loved her knitting and was a very keen walker. She also loved baking, making all the Christmas cakes for the family. She liked her shopping day trips on the bus to the market towns of Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Newton Aycliffe. She celebrated her special day with family and friends at the home in Chilton, where she has been a resident for the last two and a half years.

Chilton library newsThere are three new adult fiction displays available this week at Chilton Library. The first is a collection of novels by the author Annie Sanders including Getting Mad, Getting Even: Georgie and Flick are a girl’s best friend - and secret weapon. Their agency, Domestic Angels, provides invaluable help to armies of harassed women. After years of hard work, Georgie and Flick have built a small but grateful clientele - doing everything from booking the plumber to replacing dead hamsters. Then one evening, they are visited by a pale, nervous-looking woman who makes the strangest request yet. Her husband has combined a take-over with a leg-over. Not just because she’s been working all hours in her job as a reception-ist for two high-powered plastic surgeons - but also because every holiday she has ever been on in her life has involved sunburn, arguments and projectile vomiting - and sometimes all three at once.The third display is titled ‘Sea Warfare’ and includes the novel For Valour by Douglas Reeman: As captain of the crack Tribal Class destroyer HMS “Hakka”, Commander Graham Martineau must once again demand from his ordinary seamen the ultimate in courage, and prepare to defend to the death vital convoys to Russia. There is no hiding place in the bitter Arctic seas.Book and Chat session will be held on Thursday 17th May from 2pm. The book this month is Gypsy Madonna by Santa Montefiore.

Last few tickets left for Mayor’s concert There are only a few tickets left for the Mayor’s Brass Band Concert which will take place this Saturday, 12th May 2012, in St Luke’s Church Hall, Church Lane, Ferryhill, commencing at 7.15pm until 10pm.

Tickets are priced at £3 each and are available from Ferryhill Town Hall. The Concert is in aid of the Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Ken Campbell’s charities, which are Marie Curie Cancer Care and Ferryhill Town Band.

Kids to Walk 4 It Walk 4 It, the campaign to get more kids across County Durham walking to school during the summer, will begin on Monday, 21st May - the first day of National Walk to School Week. The campaign was first launched last year and aims to help reduce car congestion outside schools, as well as encouraging everyone to be healthier and more active. Pupils at participating primary schools collect points when they walk to and from school. The points are then exchanged for prizes which include free swimming vouchers and lessons at Durham County Council’s leisure centres. So far around 100 primary schools in County Durham will be taking part, but there’s still time to register a school.

Cabinet member for re-generation and economic development, Cllr Neil Foster said: “Last year the Walk 4 It campaign was a great success and the number of children who walked to school increased by 13 per cent. “Children and families benefit from increased physical activity thanks to the campaign, but local communities also benefit from reduced traffic congestion and the environ-mental pollution associated with the school run.” The Walk 4 It campaign will run until Friday, 13th July. Schools who are interested in taking part should contact Durham County Council’s travel plan team by emailing travelplan-ning@durham.gov.uk. National Walk to School Week takes place each year and around 1.6 million children take part.

Charity cycle-fitness challenge People in County Durham are being urged to get on their bikes and help raise money for charity.An indoor-cycle-fitness marathon, led by qualified instructors, will take place at Spennymoor Leisure Centre on Wednesday, May 16th from 6pm. Doors open at 5.30pm.All money raised from the event – through donations and a raffle – will be going to the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), British Legion and Centre Point charities.Staff, instructors, members and non-members of the leisure centre are all encouraged to join in, with 130 bikes available.The event is being organised by Durham

County Council with its leisure partner Lifestyle Fitness to celebrate the Halfords Cycle Tour Series, taking place in Durham on May 17th, and is part of the council’s “Join In” Olympic legacy programme.Halfords has donated raffle prizes in support of the event, including a T-shirt signed by some of the competitors of the Halfords Cycle Tour Series race in Durham.

Author book confirmed for TVLast week (issue 571) The Chapter reported that Ferryhill author, Howard Linskey’s Newcastle-based gangster novel The Drop had been optioned by Harry Potter producer, David Barron, and ITV have now confirmed that the book will be adapted for TV.Having being voted as

one of the Top 5 Thrillers of the year by the Times, the sequel has just been published. The Damage is also set in Newcastle and uncovers the world of contract killers and corrupt politicians.Howard, originally from Ferryhill, is a former journalist who supports Newcastle United.
