Stars of stop smoking service receive awards

Chilton Chemist and Fer-ryhill and Chilton Medical Practice were among the stars of County Durham’s NHS Stop Smoking Service recently recognised for their work to help people quit.They joined top stop smoking advisors at GP practices and pharma-cies across the county who received awards in a special “Star Performer” ceremony at the Durham

Centre in Belmont.Anna Lynch, the director of public health for Durham County Council said: “Helping people to stop smoking is one of the most important things any health care professional can do. “It was a privilege present-ing these awards to a range of people whose commit-ment has gone that extra mile to ensure they give the best service for their patients.

“We know smokers are four times more likely to quit if they get the right support, and County Durham NHS Stop Smoking Service has an excellent track record of providing this.”The “Star Performer” awards recognise and reward top performing Level Two stop smoking advisors and services that provide high quality services for smokers within their local communities.

A Ferryhill war veteran has been banned from driving for 24 months, and given 12 months community service and a fine of £295 in court costs for driving under the influence.Earlier in the day, Howard Shaw attended the Ferryhill Service of Remembrance on Sunday 8th November,

laying a commemorative wreath to the war dead.Shaw then went to the pub and drank himself to almost three times the legal limit by the evening, before driving to a Chinese takeaway shop.On his way home, he crashed the car into a parked vehicle close to his

The 4 Together Partner-ship Forum and Commu-nity Voting Event was held on Saturday 14 November 2015 at Chilton Community College. The event was a huge success with 241 people going along on the day to give their views. Applications for the Capital Small Grants Pot for ten out of eleven projects were successful, which meant that the projects were able to be funded. The tenth project did not receive the full allocation that was requested but, because it was close, it was still able to go ahead.Attendees were asked to vote for three different projects out of the eleven projects vying for a share of the funding. The results were as follows:• First position: Ferryhill

Banner Group – Refurbishment of Dean & Chapter & Mainsforth Miners Banners; amount received, £1,460; (votes, 106);

• -Second position: 1st Chilton Scout Group; amount received, £1,395; (votes, 92);

• Third position: Chilton Gala Equipment; amount received, £1,884; (votes, 79);

• Fourth position: St Luke’s Parish Centre Vision and Sound for

the Community; amount received, £5,000; (votes, 74);

• Fifth position: St Aidan’s Parochial Church Council – St Aidan’s Advice Club; amount received, £1,037; (votes, 65);

• Sixth position: West Cornforth Community Association – Stage Curtains Refurbishment; amount received, £4,256; (votes, 62);

• Seventh position: Ferryhill Town Council – World War II Memorial; amount received, £690; (votes, 60);

• Eighth position: Mainsforth Row Garden Association – Security Cabin/Meeting Room & Plot Holder Amenities; amount received, £2,280; (votes, 54);

• Ninth position: Enter CIC – A Floor to Dance; amount received, £3,709; (votes, 51);

• Tenth position: Ferryhill LADDER Centres – Lifts & Ladders; amount received, £3,250 (amount available, £3,196); (votes, 47).

The total capital pot amount: £24,907.Unfortunately one project was unable to be funded and that was The Cornforth Partnership – Growing Together which had a request for £4,997

but only received 33 votes on the day.Attendees were given ten priorities and asked to vote for the three pri-orities they thought were the most important issues within their communi-ties. The results were as follows:• First position: Children

& Young People with 131 votes;

• Second position: Crime & Community Safety with 102 votes;

• Third position: Employability, Training & Job Prospects with 101 votes;

• Fourth position: Older People with 80 votes;

• Fifth position: Community Aspirations with 64 votes;

• Sixth position: Transport with 61 votes;

• Seventh position: Environment & Regeneration with 60 votes;

• Eighth position: Health & Wellbeing with 55 votes

• Ninth position: Housing with 39 votes

• Tenth position: IT with 12 votes.

The Board will discuss the results at the next Board Meeting in January 2016, in order to define which priorities 4 Together Part-nership will be working on for 2016/2017.

Ten community projects receive almost £25,000 of AAP fundingLetters Have your say...

Dear Editor,On Saturday, 14th November, at Chilton College Community Centre, we (The Ferryhill Banner Group) came top of the poll in a public vote to decide where funding should be directed from the 4 Together Partnership (AAP).We would like to thank the many people who came along to this event and supported ourselves and the many deserving projects on display. We can now go ahead and refurbish the poles, brass accessories and harnesses for the miners’ banners of Dean and Chapter and Mainsforth. We had lovely conversations throughout the day with many ex-miners and people whose fathers, grandfathers and uncles all worked in the mines of Dean and Chapter and Mainsforth.Hopefully the majority of projects on display will also receive the funding they applied for, which will enable the many volunteer groups in our area to carry on.Our sincere thanks and appreciation, Peter Atkinson On behalf of the Ferryhill Banner Group.

Dear Editor,We would like to thank all customers old and new for attending Endeavour Woodcrafts Xmas Open Day on Sat 14th November. We had a fantastic busy day selling our range of quality hand made wooden products. We would also like to thank the Mayor of Ferryhill, Pauline Crathorne, who opened our fair and a special thanks to all those businesses, members of the public and friends, who donated to our prize raffle, especially Peter Clarks Estate Agent, Fiori, Sweet Retreat and Card Fayre, FerryhillYours sincerely, Endeavour Woodcrafts, Ferryhill

County Councillor, Chris-tine Potts, with the support of the 4 Together Partner-ship, has awarded Chilton Community College £779 from her Neighbourhood Budget so that the college can help to promote itself. The college, which now averages around 150 users a week, wants to return

to the numbers using the facility last year by raising the current figure back up to 300 users. Andy Coulthard, the College Chairman said: “Thanks to Christine, we now have our own printer, pull up display and leaflet racks. “We plan to put the display and leaflets in a variety of

Dear Editor,Can I thank you for the superb coverage and the photographs of the Remembrance Service in Ferryhill? The service was conducted admirably by Les Lewis, and the people of Ferryhill turned out in their hundreds to show their respect to our fallen comrades. I was delighted to see so many children and their teachers and leaders showing their respect.Can I reassure the residents and children of Mainsforth and Ferryhill Station that the memorial to the First World War’s fallen, situated on Memorial Cottage, has never been forgotten and never will be. The Royal British Legion branch at Ferryhill Station has laid a wreath on Remembrance Day for as long as I can remember. Many RBL members have carried out this duty, Cllr Margaret Walton has done it for the last ten years. Since Ferryhill Town Council took over the responsibility of distributing the poppies, a local councillor, Duncan Harrison, has laid the Town Council wreath for the last ten years.Hoping this reassures everyone.Yours sincerely, Councillor B. Avery Royal British Legion & Durham CC

long distance runners in the world and he said that children never knew what they might achieve if they just always try their best.He also introduced them to a thing called Activity Breaks, which he has persuaded all the head teachers to try in school.He has given the schools a list of different energetic and fun activities that the teachers can lead during or in between lessons. The breaks only take three of four minutes and the children do them in the classroom and then

go straight back to their lessons.Charlie told the Chapter: “Young children struggle to hold their concentra-tion for very long in school and these short bursts of physical activity have been shown to improve their at-tention span. “The few minutes it takes to do the activity is more than made up for by the improved concentration and lack of fidgeting that follows an activity.“They are all designed to be fun so that the children love doing them. “I am hoping that the children enjoy them so

much that they want to do lots more energetic activity when they are not at school. “Parents could help here by encouraging their children to be really active because studies have shown that lots of exercise improves both physical and mental fitness.”As one of the world’s greatest long distance runners, Charlie’s legacy lives on; to this day he remains Britain’s third fastest marathon runner after Steve Jones and Mo Farah.

Internationally acclaimed Operatic Tenor, Ian Storey is returning to Ferryhill to perform with and inspire children and young people from all the area’s schools. Ian, the son of a Chilton miner, is coming back to his roots between a hectic schedule to perform with pupils and is keen to show children what they can aspire to if they work hard and follow their dreams.

Accompanying Ian on piano will be his old music teacher, George Hetherington. Ian asked if it would be possible to find George - who lived and sang at Durham Cathedral during the war years and later went on to become a music teacher, working at Fer-ryhill Grammar School - as the two have not seen each other in a lot of years.Ian will work with second-

Acclaimed tenor to visit school ary school students in the morning to tell them about performing in all of the major opera houses across Europe and America.He will attend a concert at Broom Cottages Primary School on the afternoon of Thursday 26th November when the children will perform for Ian and then get the opportunity to sing the Iona Boat Song with him.

A County Durham landlord who repeatedly failed to comply with licensing requirements has been ordered to pay more than £1,600 by magistrates.William John Lamb, 56, of Main Street, Ferryhill, failed to obtain a licence from Durham County Council in respect of a property he owned and rented out on Rennie Street, also in Ferryhill.The county council intro-duced a selective licens-ing scheme in Ferryhill, in March 2013, in order to ensure that privately-rent-ed properties are properly managed and maintained.Under the scheme all private landlords must obtain a licence for each property they manage.On Wednesday 18th November, Darlington Mag-istrates’ Court heard that Mr Lamb was contacted on a number of occasions and licensing applications packs were sent out to him

four times between March 2013 and May 2015.The court heard that despite repeated remind-ers Mr Lamb failed to apply for a licence for the property, contrary to the Housing Act 2004.Mr Lamb had indicated that he was too ill to attend court and no mitigation was offered.Magistrates found Mr Lamb guilty in his absence and fined him £600 with £1,020 costs and a £60 victim sur-charge.Sarah Robson, head of economic development

Ferryhill landlord fined for failing to obtain licence

and housing at Durham County Council, said: “The majority of landlords operate in a very profes-sional manner, however, the selective licensing scheme was introduced to ensure good management procedures are in place in all privately-rented prop-erties where the scheme exists.“We are committed to upholding the selective licensing arrangements and in cases such as this one, where landlords fail to comply, we will take ap-propriate action.”

Graves desecrated in “sickening incident” as feud goes “too far”Police described as “sick-ening” an incident in which two skulls were taken from a cemetery grave in what they believe is connected to a feud among travelling families.Durham Constabulary officers were called to the cemetery on Bridge Street in Metal Bridge near Ferry-hill at around 11.45am on Saturday, 21st November following a report that a grave had been disturbed and a headstone damaged.It is believed that the damage took place over-night on Friday, 20th November.The grave that was damaged belonged to two men who were both aged 16 when they died; Levi George Price, who died in 2001 and Gareth Price,

who died in 2005.Following forensic ex-aminations over the weekend it has been es-tablished that the skulls of both bodies have been removed.Detective Superintendent Adrian Green said: “This is a sickening incident which has understandably upset many people.“We believe that the damage to the graves is part of an ongoing feud between members of trav-elling families.“This has taken things too far. It is depraved and goes against the religious and cultural beliefs of decent people. “What I’d like to say to the community is this feud has to stop and we need anyone with information

about this incident or the wider feud to contact us. “You can call police, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously, and be assured we will treat any information you pass to us with complete confidenti-ality.“I would also like to reassure local people that we will be running regular police patrols in key areas to deal robustly with any further disturbances. The incidents to date have been targeted and do not involve the wider commu-nity directly.”Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact officers on 101 quoting log number 0217 of 21st November or Crimestoppers anony-mously on 0800 555 111.

Ferryhill Chamber of Commerce is to relaunch with meetings intially held in the Town Hall. Announcing the relaunch, Cllr Joe Makepeace said: “I hope to generate sufficient interest to appoint effec-tive officials internally, however until such time I will act as Chair with Mel Gibson as Vice Chair, to ensure continuity. “As Ferryhill approaches an important time in its history with the formula-

tion of a neighbourhood plan, and other initiatives under discussion, it is vital Ferryhill business has its say and exerts influence in all matters, in much the same way as the County Council involves larger businesses.“The plan encompasses all areas of Ferryhill, however I am sure there are many other issues to debate, so please make the effort to attend the Chamber meetings.”

Chamber of Commerce relaunchThe date and time of the January meeting will be published in the Chapter.

The poster forms part of Durham Police’s Christmas anti-crime initiative.

Police find hundreds of homes at risk of being burgledMore than 500 properties, mainly in the South Durham area including Chilton and Ferryhill, were found to be at risk of burglary during ‘dark nights’ patrols across the force area last week.The operation formed part of a force-wide initiative to prevent crime in the run-up to Christmas. Officers and staff from neighbourhood police teams, alongside Neighbourhood Watch volunteers, targeted areas that have had previous problems with break-ins. Those homes found to be at risk were delivered a leaflet with tips on how to stay safe.Detective Chief Inspector Dave Ashton said: “We know that homes left in darkness are much more likely to be targeted by criminals. There are simple steps that people can take to reduce the risk of a break-in; use timer lights, fit an alarm and use it, draw curtains or blinds, don’t leave valuable items or gifts on view.“As part of the campaign we are also offering ap-pointments with our crime prevention officers who can supply safety equip-ment for homes, including lighting timers.“A burglary at this time of year can ruin the festive season for a family. We hope that by co-ordinating these patrols across County

Durham and Darlington this week we will raise as much awareness as possible about how people can keep them-selves and their property safe, and that everyone can enjoy a crime-free and happy Christmas.”Over 3,000 houses were checked. Two homes were

found to have their garage doors wide open, leaving easy access to items inside and one car nearby had its fuel cap open. Advice was given to the owners in all three cases.And several properties were clearly unoccupied, some in darkness with ‘for sale’ boards outside and others with front window blinds open showing an empty address, making them potential targets for criminals to break in and strip out boilers or other materials.

Residents in Ferryhill and Chilton are invited to sign up for next year’s garden waste collection service.Durham County Council will resume the fortnightly collections in March 2016.Householders can subscribe to the service, which offers 17 collections between spring and autumn, for an annual fee of £20.Collections do not take place during the winter months as there is less waste produced, however people can still recycle their garden waste by taking it to a household waste recycling centre or by composting at home.Following feedback from residents who used the service last year an addi-tional collection has been added for the 2016 scheme.Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neigh-bourhoods and local part-nerships at Durham County Council, said: “The garden waste collection service is a convenient way for residents to dispose of and recycle their garden waste.“Nearly 65,000 people across the county sub-

scribed last year and we are very pleased to be able to offer 17 collections for 2016, with no increase in the annual fee, and would encourage people to sign up to take advantage of the service.”Durham County Council introduced the subscrip-tion fee for the service last year in order to enable the collections to continue as councils are not obliged to provide garden waste col-lections.Residents wishing to receive all 17 collections must sign up before 14th February 2016.Those who do subscribe will receive a pink bin sticker and a collection calendar, which will be issued from January 2016.Anyone who has already subscribed to the service for three years will au-tomatically receive their sticker and collection calendar in January.For more information about garden waste col-lections or to subscribe people can go to durham.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 03000 261 000.

One of only two banks in Ferryhill is set to close in the new year, on 26th February, “due to a decline in customers and a rise in numbers preferring to use online banking services,” says Barclays Bank.Ferryhill Mayor, Pauline Crathorne, expressed concern at the imminent

closure which makes the nearest branch for Ferryhill residents in Spennymoor. She described it as, “a great loss.”Barclays’ service replace-ment will be the Post Office where residents can continue to draw funds, check balances and pay in for the foreseeable future.

Chapter Ferryhill & Chilton

Playing away at league leaders Hartlepool in the County Vets Inter League and suffering another 0-5 defeat, you would assume that Ferryhill were com-pletely outplayed.However, in this case the final scoreline did not show a true reflection on how the game was played. One rink was soundly beaten by eleven shots which could have been more but for a late rally to claim eight shots, but the other rinks were unlucky not to score points.Skip R Jefferson’s rink was again the pick of the bunch as they led by two shots approaching the last four ends.However four shots dropped at the next handed the home side the

advantage and despite matching their opponents from thereon they eventu-ally lost by two shots.Skip B Johnstone’s rink also looked to be heading for a point as they held a narrow lead and were more than a match for the home rink.Unfortunately they let the initiative slip losing all of the last five ends conced-ing ten shots without reply to lose out by eight shots.Final scores: R Jefferson 11-13 D Andrews, B John-stone 7-15 T Barnes, C Larcombe 11-22 F Taylor.Games were coming thick and fast now and next up was a Club Inter League match against Aycliffe. This format features three rinks playing home and three away and the result was another crushing

defeat for the beleaguered Ferryhill bowlers. There were no winning rinks, with the final count being 74 shots for and 156 against. Only the rink of skip Walter Latimer got anywhere near losing by a mere two shots.Three days later and things didn’t get any better as the club sent a strong triples rink to Houghton for the next round of the Premier League. Seeking to continue their strong start to the league, they were up against the unbeaten Darlington B rink and didn’t help themselves by dropping eleven shots in the first two ends. This was a mountain too high and despite a spirited reply they never closed the gap as they found the Dar-lington rink in tremendous form and went down by twenty six shots.

No points for luckless Ferryhill bowlers

Ferryhill Under 8’s trav-elled to Hartlepool Youth and returned to winning ways.Ferryhill arrived in Hartle-pool to a heavy pitch and wet, windy and bitterly cold conditions. But this didn’t affect the team as they looked to bounce back from last week’s defeat against Bill-ingham United. The first half was end to end with both teams finding their feet in the early exchanges before scoring two goals apiece in a thoroughly entertaining opening period.The second half was an impressive one from Fer-ryhill as they pressed and battled for every ball. Superb keeping from Aidan, outstanding defend-ing from Noah, excellent all round play from George and Zach and great work rate and finishing from Jamie contributed to four second half goals without reply. Kole came on in the second

half for Jamie and picked up where he left off with some hard work and trade-mark runs. It was a great effort against a good Hartlepool team with the final score Hartlepool 2 - 6 Ferryhill.The goals came from Zach, George and man-of-the-match, Jamie.The second game saw William, Aaron, Carlton and Sam get their oppor-tunity to impress and they certainly did that. It was another battling performance from all of the team and while it saw fewer goals than the first game, Ferryhill came out on top in another enter-taining match. Aidan came out of goal in the second half with Zach going between the posts and doing a solid job.The game ended Hartlepool 2 - 3 Ferryhill with goals from Kole and George. The team are away again for the 4th game in a row next week, this time to Billingham Juniors.

Victory on the road for Ferryhill U8s

Harwood Wilson, Brian Johnstone and Keith Seymour, who represented Ferryhill in the Premier League, were left with too high a mountain to climb after dropping early shots.
