“As part of our festive campaign, we stop

motorists and test them for diabetes and bloodpressure,we also offer voluntaryHIV tests be-cause we are mindful of the fact that its notalcohol alone that kills people on the roads, some of the time people are killed by fatigue,”he said.

“Illnesses like diabetes and blood pressuremake drivers so it is important that people testfor such illnesses.

“Another thing of critical importance is thatpeopledon’t eathealthyordrinkenoughwateron the road, that is why we give motorist a re-fresherpackof juice, energybar, appleandwetwipes,” he added.

NTUNTU DWEBA>>[email protected]

A WARD 9 Matatiele councillor went be-yond his call of duty and became a policeofficer for the benefit of the community.

CllrPakkiesandhiscommunityarrestedarmed-robbery suspects in Mahangu vil-lage, Matatiele recently.

Pakkies was informed by the communi-

ty that a robbery was in progress, after theyhad called Afsondering police for assist-ance, but to no avail.

“After I received the call I rushed to thescene at midnight. I found one suspect inthe hands of the community and saved himbecause they wanted to kill him,” he said.

After apprehending one suspect,Pakkies gathered information on thewhereabouts of the other suspects.

“I asked some of the community to ac-company me to arrest the other suspectswhom I heard were dangerous and heavilyarmed. We arrested two at first, and hand-ed them to the police, with the hope thatthey [SAPS] would accompany us or takethis in their hands, but they failed to do so.

luleko Dzimande (20), Athenkosi Mzala(21), Sibongiseni Zondi (38), JabulaniMdingi (20) — some of whom are pupils, were arrested for armed robbery, housebreaking, theft and possession of unli-censed firearms.

“It is unacceptable that police are not

reliable, we can’t allow that,” Pakkies said.“I wrote to the provincial commissioner

and the national commissioner about thiswith the hope that I will get immediate as-sistance in this regard,” he added.

DR DCT NAKIN MUNICIPAL MANAGER

Monday’s incident was appallingONMonday the municipality witnessed an un-fortunate scenewhen our offices were invadedby unknown people who poured human faecesin reception.

That incident forced the staff to abandontheir jobs and run away because of the smell.

Serviceinthemainofficeweredisruptedandthe community and staff were traumatised bythe action.

Whatwas painful is that the council speakerand the municipal manager were having ameeting with the leaders of the ConcernedResidents of Ward 1 group where we weretrying to iron out some of the issues that were

raised by them and we were hoping to find anamicable solution on those issues.

I want to stress that the municipality is will-ing to negotiate with all citizens of the munici-pality, but we will not accept unbecoming con-duct and hope that the lawwill play its role.Wecan’t put people’s lives in danger by exposingthem to hazardous action.

We urge the community not to copy whathappened on Monday.Merry Christmas to everyoneThe Greater Kokstad Municipality wishes

MadamMayor you inherit-edagoodlegacy,andbeingtheonly female mayor of theKokstad Municipality, youbrought it to its knees. I readwith a shock that you calledjournalists to tell themlies, notknowing that provincialTreasury has given your mu-nicipal manager a reportabout fraud and corruption.

What a disgrace.As awoman I amashamed

to call you my mayor. As anANC voter I now agree withthosewhodoubtyourabilitytooccupy that office. They werecorrect to say you are dishon-est, cruel and the dirtiestleaderwho uses dark tricks tostay in power. I hope your fel-low bed mates see the messthey causedby rewarding you

with the mayorship. MadamMayor, youcanfoolsomeofthepeople, but you cannot fooleveryone. Even though Mtolocalls us “uneducated citizen”,wewill teach you a lesson.Wewill vote for the ANC, but wewill never vote for you. Do thehonest thing Madam Mayor, resign with immediate effector you will leave us with nochoicebut to forceyou todosoby making this townungovernable.

Thekaka throwingwas thebeginning of great things tocome.Enoughwith Jojozi andMtolo. We can’t be led bycheaters and liars.

Community wake up, theANC cannot endorse corrup-tion.We cannot hand ourmu-nicipalitytotheDAandEFFbyprotecting a liar. As the com-munity we demand that re-port.Wewillmobiliseamarchto demand that report.

Kokstad Resident

Concern at unbecoming behaviourWE, as the ANC Harry Gwala Region, note with con-cern the unbecoming behaviour of the Ward 1 Con-cerned Residents group.

The barbaric action of throwing sewage in theGreater Kokstad Municipality and Harry Gwala satel-lite office must be condemned in the strongest terms.

We also state that those people are not ordinarycommunitymembers, butrepresentacertainpoliticalorganisation.

It has come to our attention that our leaders areaccused of corruption. It must be noted that the ANCis bold in fighting corruption and we understandthat none of our leaders have been found guilty of

corruption. If anyone has factual information theymust bring it to our attention.

We note that there are still infrastructure backlogsbut there are challenges that both municipalities faceand are doing all in their power to resolve them.

The Harry Gwala District Municipality has alreadystarted the Horseshoe Sanitation project that aimsto convert VIP toilets to waterborne (flushing) toilets.

This shows that the notion that nothing is beingdone to address Ward 1 challenges is misleading.

We also clarify that Councillor Phumzile Nocandais the ward councillor and the service delivery pro-grammes will go through him.

We applaud the SAPS for responding quickly toour call to assist during incidents.

We appeal to residents and stakeholders to ab-stain from destructive methods under the pretenceof raising genuine service delivery matters.

We are fully aware that this is not the view of thegeneral public, but merely a handful of destructiveelements whose cheap political point-scoring isthrough hooliganism.

We thank the Kokstad communities, particularlyin Ward 1, for supporting us and assure them the ANCwill always be their home.

IT appears that the chickens have comehome to roost inKokstadwith the latest inci-dent by the community of Kokstad throwingfaeces in the offices of Greater KokstadMunicipality and Harry Gwala DistrictMunicipality. The DA does not condone thistype of activity but sympathise with thoseresidents who have been complaining forsome years now about raw sewage spills.

Numerous complaints, newspaper arti-cles and even a KZN Legislature oversightvisit have produced no solution to the prob-lem. It is unacceptable that the communityhas to live in these horrendous conditionsand furthermore, to be insulted by Council-lor Ndobe in his response that these chal-lenges were inherited from the apartheidera. In fact the predominate sewage crisis isin residential developments that were con-structed by the ANC-run municipality.

Offurtherinterest,attherecentpresscon-ference by Mayor Jojozi and MM Mkhize, they lamented about the negative publicity

Kokstad was receiving from the media. Thereality is that thecommunityofKokstadcon-tinue to hear rumours about corruption andmaladministration, and so on.

Most disturbing is the recent denial byJojozi and Mkhize that they have yet to seteyesonthereportof theinvestigationbyPro-vincial Treasury into the state of Kokstad’sfinances, this when Provincial Treasury in-forms us that the report was handed toMkhize at the beginning of September.

Denial and “ducking and diving” of thesituationisnotthesolution, onlyanopenandtransparent agenda by GKM will stop thenegative publicity.

The DA will be calling on the MEC DubeofCogtatocompelGKMtoreleasethefindingof thereport, toonceand forall stopspecula-tion about the financial health of Kokstad.

Mayor’s Christmas Message

That time of the year has arrived where families come together to celebrate the festive season. Itis season to show love, giving to needy, showing compassion and most of all to forgive. Let us make this Christmas specialby reducing road fatalities. Let us all obey the traffic rules to enables us to arrive alive. We haveobserved high level of criminal activities, we call upon our communities to be vigilant and report anysuspicious activities to the police. We must show that we do care for each other by protecting the

properties of the fellow human being.

We have seen young people experimenting with alcohol and drugs during the festive seasons. We would like to warn them that alcoholand drugs are not meant for young people and can have serious health implications if one is abusing them. The time will come for theyouth to engage drinking and to the adults please drink responsible in order to teach the youth good values. It is our responsibility to reduce the high rate of HIV/AIDS which is prevalent in our communities. We would like to wish all of you Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Grade 5 pupils followed with plaintive chordsstruck as angels uncurled, rose, swayed and sang likea heavenly choir.
