The scene was picturesque and un- usual and the outside of the building with quaint Moorish balconies, myste- rious symbolic lights and four round squat towers encircled with glowing lights and colors might have made one fancy himself il that land of mystery India had it not been for the American eagle perched solemnly on high. The edifice was decorated with calla lilies, carnations, red and pink, and smilax, which formed festoons over the full length portraits of famous swa.mis which hung on the walls. Music was rendered by three voices, a soprano, a contralto and a tenor, and violin and flute duos were given. The auditorium was crowded from platform to outer doors and an overflow meeting strung its way fairly to the sidewalk. -The building was brilliant withlights at the dedication ceremonies, which were conducted by Swami Trigunatita, who first gave an address on "Spirit and Matter," in which he stated that the two were diametrically opposite and assured his listeners that the body Itself was but a gross thing, a°- mere casket for the glory of the spiritual faculties/which alone could lead man on to majestic beauty of thought and result. The swami spoke also on the power of right giving^and announced that what ■was given in the temple was given absolutely and directly to God. :". .-,'■■ _ r ;.. - ■ . - . . - The first Hindu temple in the' west- ern world, according to the San Fran- cisco Vedanta society, was dedicated last evening, in the new building at the corner : of -Webster and Filbert streets. The edifice is unique in a western, city, being modeled after the great Taj Mahai 'of India, one of; the seven won- ders of the world, the famous temple of Benares, of Shiva, and after some of the old European castles, xiie'arches are Moorish, and the symbols expressed by the different lights most profound.- On account of this being the first Hindu temple in America the appreciation of this - fact is shown by carrying the architectural art of the temple, the sushumna the- main channel of spir- itual illumination— up to an American eagle, which holds in its beak the three American colors in lights red, white and blue. The towers, of which there are four, each stand for a spiritual quality easily recognizable by those versed in the Hindu faith, and the most important tower has been placed on the northeast corner, in conformance with the traditions attaching to that point of the compass. The scene was picturesque and un-usual and the outside of the buildingwith quaint Moorish balconies, myste-rious symbolic lights and four roundsquat towers encircled with glowinglights and colors might have made onefancy himself ilthat land of mystery

—India

—had itnot been for the American

eagle perched solemnly on high.

The edifice was decorated with callalilies, carnations, red and pink, andsmilax, which formed festoons over thefull length portraits of famous swa.miswhich hung on the walls. Music wasrendered by three voices, a soprano, acontralto and a tenor, and violin andflute duos were given. The auditoriumwas crowded from platform to outerdoors and an overflow meeting strungits way fairly to the sidewalk.

-The building was brilliant withlightsat the dedication ceremonies, whichwere conducted by Swami Trigunatita, who first gave an address on "Spiritand Matter," in which he stated thatthe two were diametrically oppositeand assured his listeners that the bodyItself was but a gross thing, a°-merecasket for the glory of the spiritualfaculties/which alone could lead manon to majestic beauty of thought andresult. The swami spoke also on thepower of right giving^and announcedthat what ■was given in the temple wasgiven absolutely and directly to God.

■ . - . . -The first Hindu temple in the' west-

ern world, according to the San Fran-cisco Vedanta society, was dedicatedlast evening,in the new building at thecorner :of -Webster and Filbert streets. The edifice is unique in a western, city, being modeled after the great Taj

Mahai 'of India, one of;the seven won-ders of the world, the famous temple ofBenares, of Shiva, and after some of theold European castles, xiie'arches areMoorish, and the symbols expressed bythe different lights most profound.- Onaccount of this being the first Hindutemple in America the appreciation ofthis - fact is shown by carrying thearchitectural art of the temple, thesushumna

—the- main channel of spir-

itual illumination— up to an Americaneagle, which holds in its beak the threeAmerican colors in lights

—red, white

and blue. The towers, of which thereare four, each stand for a spiritualquality easily recognizable by thoseversed in the Hindu faith, and the mostimportant tower has been placed onthe northeast corner, in conformancewith the traditions attaching to thatpoint of the compass.
