WELCOMEDear Friends:
Welcome to Fight Night and thank you for joining us as we commemorate 25 amazing years of fighting for children!
Fight For Children is guided by a simple goal: to give children in need a chance at a bright future by giving them opportunities they might otherwise miss. Fight Night makes it possible for us to make a positive difference in the lives of so many. I am proud that Fight For Children was able to invest over $2.3 million of the proceeds from last year’s Fight Night into a dozen amazing projects in Washington and Baltimore. From preventing asthma in Southeast DC to helping build a world-class artificial turf field in Latrobe Park in Baltimore, the projects made possible because of your generosity are changing lives every day.
I think Joe Robert would be proud to know the event he started 25 years ago has not only survived, but is thriving and raising millions to ensure low-income children receive a great education and stay healthy so they can learn. Joe gave us a great foundation to build upon, and I know the next 25 years of Fight Night are going to be amazing.
Fight Night would not be possible without the dedication of hundreds of Fight Night volunteers, the great team at Fight For Children, and of course, the support and generosity of Under Armour. I can think of no better partner for us. They are bringing a new level of passion, determination, and innovation to Fight Night. I also deeply appreciate the generosity of all the long-time Fight Night supporters and the many new friends joining us for the first time tonight.
This evening is all about supporting our next generation. We are grateful to you for making it possible for us to give tomorrow’s leaders the chance they deserve to win.
Sincerely,
Raul Fernandez Chairman

It all started with an idea. In 1996, Kevin Plank, a 23-year-old former University of Maryland special teams captain, turned an idea born on the football field into a movement that changed the way athletes dress forever. Back in his playing days, Plank hated having to change his sweat-soaked cotton T-shirts over and over again during two-a-days. Knowing that there simply had to be something better, he set out to create a solution. Plank, after extensive research on the athletic benefits of synthetic fabrics, designed the first prototype T-shirt and named his new company Under Armour.
Today, with revenue on pace to surpass $3 Billion by the end of the year, Under Armour is widely recognized as a global leader in performance footwear, apparel, and accessories, and its commitment to making all athletes better drives its relentless dedication to building tomorrow’s next great innovation, today.
The Under Armour Team also believes in their responsibility to do good in communities all over the world. Through UA Give Back the brand supports people who inspire us to do better. Through support of its legacy partners, including The Wounded Warrior Project and signature programs such as Power in Pink, the brand is supporting our military and law enforcement heroes and investing resources in improving breast health.
Additionally, the brand has numerous initiatives aimed at empowering young athletes. A portion of the proceeds from Fight Night 2014 will support Under Armour¹s WIN Initiative. Launched in spring 2012, the mission of UA WIN is to empower the athletes of the NEXT generation by providing kids in underserved communities access to sport. By enhancing the places where kids play, investing in programs that use sports to teach life skills, outfitting kids with the latest products, and supporting people who dedicate their time to coaching Under Armour is committed to uplifting communities and impacting youth all over the world.
ABOUT UNDER ARMOUR
25 years ago tonight, Joe Robert hosted a small “party” at the Capital Hilton that was just a bit politically incorrect.
Joe had one simple goal that night: to raise money for low-income kids. 25 years later, Fight Night and Fight For Children live on and
are strong. Join us over the next years, as we celebrate this important milestone and look forward to the next 25.
4
FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE FIGHTOur mission is simple: we fight to give low-income children a great education and keep them healthy so they can learn.
For 25 years, we have done just that.
While we use proceeds from Fight Night to make grants to worthy nonprofits that share our mission, we also support our own programs which are focused on getting kids ready for kindergarten and improving the quality of K-12 schools.
Joe’s Champs. Our newest program is designed to improve the educational experience of three- and four-year-olds in DC by working with school leadership teams to increase their content knowledge in early childhood education. Through Joe’s Champs, school leaders strengthen their ability to provide meaningful instructional support to teachers and their students.
Quality Schools Initiative. This program showcases schools that have strong leadership and a clear vision for their students’ academic future. It also convenes leaders from DC’s public and public charter schools to learn from expert speakers and from each other at two semi-annual conferences.
Grants made possible from Fight Night include: AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation
Fight For Children and AppleTree are in the fourth year of a five-year $500,000 partnership to support the development of AppleTree’s Every Child Ready early childhood education curriculum, which is
now being used in classrooms in DC serving 1,500 three- and four-year-old students. www.appletreeinstitute.org
CentroNíaFight For Children awarded CentroNía $120,000 to continue its early childhood education provider professional development training that it started with Fight For Children in 2012. CentroNía is providing
quality training to eight private centers, impacting more than 600 children. www.centronia.org
Children’s National Health System The IMPACT DC asthma treatment and prevention program at Children’s National Health System used a $100,000 grant
from Fight For Children to develop an asthma prevention curriculum for caregivers of children two- to five-years-old, which is helping to prevent asthma-related emergency room visits for an estimated 1,500 children annually. www.childrensnational.org
DC Special Education Cooperative The Coop received a grant of $113,000 to grow the INCLUDE program, which provides a credited course to teachers in DC on strategies to teach special needs students in an inclusion setting. This grant allowed for the
development of additional course content and provided scholarships to more than 30 DC teachers to participate in 2014. www.specialedcoop.org/coop
The Family PlaceFight For Children awarded $50,000 to The Family Place to support its family literacy and engagement program, a comprehensive adult and young child
education program. Fight For Children’s support allowed The Family Place to provide services to 800 families with young children. www.thefamilyplacedc.org
5
Georgetown University, Center for Child and Human Development
The GUCCHD is developing and implementing an early
childhood mental health consultative model for school-based early childhood education programs. This two-year, $200,000 program embeds a pediatric mental health consultant in pre-K classrooms to address group behavioral challenges. This program has the potential to change the course of 5,000 students’ lives over the next five years. www.gucchd.georgetown.edu
Live It Learn ItFight For Children awarded Live It Learn It $100,000 to implement its interactive field trip curriculum for 4th and 5th grade science and social studies classrooms at elementary
schools in DC’s Ward 7. The curriculum will help the participating schools expand 400 students’ exposure to hands-on education experiences. www.liveitlearnit.org
Mary’s CenterMary’s Center is implementing a comprehensive professional development program for its home visitors using a $100,000 award from Fight For Children. In addition to all of Mary Center’s home visitors receiving quality training, two are being certified as “core” trainers, giving them the
ability to provide training to all new DC home visitors. This program will impact the more than 800 families that receive home visiting services annually. www.maryscenter.org
My School DCIn 2014, DC launched an innovative common school application system for all DC Public Schools and the majority of DC
public charter schools. Fight For Children supported My School DC with $100,000 to streamline the city-wide school application and lottery process, positively impacting the more than 17,000 students who participate in the school lottery. www.myschooldc.org
Reach, IncorporatedReach is a one-of-a-kind afterschool tutoring program that hires teens to tutor elementary students in reading. Reach is
using a $92,000 grant from Fight For Children to scale its programs to help 400 high school and elementary school students in DC’s Ward 8 increase their reading and leadership skills. www.reachincorporated.org
And More... For the first time in 2013, Fight For Children made significant investments in Baltimore as part of the collaboration between Fight For Children and Under Armour. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation used proceeds from Fight Night 2013 to build a multipurpose turf field at Latrobe Park in the city’s Locust Point neighborhood and to renovate the fitness centers at two Baltimore public schools. The Parks and People Foundation received funding to expand its middle school athletic programming, which serves students from Baltimore City schools who would otherwise lack access to formal sports programs.
Each year since the founding of Fight Night in 1990, a portion of the proceeds from the event have gone to support the Alexandria Boxing Club, a structured afterschool program for children focusing on character development, self-respect, and physical health. Fight For Children is proud to continue supporting this worthy organization to positively impact children’s achievement, health, and discipline.

Thank you to many sponsors and supporters of Fight Night 2014. Fight Night has raised over $50 million over the past 25 years because of your generosity. You make it possible for Fight For Children and the other organizations that benefit from Fight Night to work each and every day to improve the lives of children in need in Washington, DC and Baltimore City. Thank you for being part of Fight Night and know that you should Feel Good About the Fight!
