Andrew Carnegie in his prime years.

 One of the lasting effects

Carnegie left was his home.

In his life, Carnegie built

a house in Millionaire’s

area, which has gone from a

has become one of the

wealthiest up-and-coming

Many old families of New

they too began to build

their great mansions on

Wearing the clothes that

your parents wore seems

unheard of, but to much

surprise, the practical and

simple style of the late

1800s is what is to be

expected for the coming

theme of the new woman,

someone who is independent

woman idea, which is now

popular, is evident in the

simplistic and sporty

clothing from back then.

Remember the First Car?

By: CHARLES GRYDER  Karl Benz, a German inventor,         was granted a patent in 1885 for             his invention, the Benz Patent         Motorwagen. It was a carriage         capable of carrying two people,         powered by a small gas motor.           This proved to be the future of             transportation for the wealthy.       The new motorized carriage       showed how to eliminate all of           the issues with horsedrawn       carriages, but the model at the           time was still quite inconvenient.         The motor was near deafening,         along with the strong odor of           gasoline, something that a high         class lady or man should not           have to endure.

The many issues that       arose with the Motorwagen       made it so that the invention           was not yet ready for the streets             of New York. The carriage had           to be fed fuel constantly by           hand, because it did not contain           a large tank, which made it a             problem when trying to enter the           city from the mansions out on           the edge of New York. Maybe           the greatest tick against the         motor carriage was its lack

But, future       models improved. The     Motorwagen would become     much faster, as well as more           comfortable.

No matter the counts       against it, the Benz Patent         Motorwagen was by far the most           innovative invention in     transportation for the high class         in the late 1800s. It would even             be fair to say that this vehicle             was the first step towards         changing the way the wealthy         traveled. Today, many of New         York’s elite own a car,         specifically the Americanmade     Ford Model T. Every automobile         made today and in the future           owes its foundations to the Benz           Patent Motorwagen.

Anthony         and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to         push the U.S. Constitution for a           woman suffrage amendment.     Another organization, the     American Woman Suffrage     Association, led by Lucy Stone,         was formed in the same year to             work through the state       legislatures. In 1890, these two         groups were united as the         National American Woman     Suffrage Association. That year,       Wyoming became the first state         to grant women the right to vote.

In 1916 the National       Woman's Party, formed in 1913         at the Congressional Union for         Woman Suffrage, decided to       adopt a more abstract approach         to woman suffrage. Instead of         lobbying, the members picketed       the White House, marched, and         staged acts of civil       disobedience.

In 1917, during World       War I, women assisted the fight           via their recent heavy       participation in the industrial       workforce. By 1918, women had         acquired equal suffrage with       men in 15 states, and both the

With the recent signing of

the Treaty of Versailles, on

June 28 of this year, it

feels right to take a look

back at what this treaty

means. The treaty itself,

ending the Great War, was

signed by the Germans and

the Allied Powers. It

contains many terms, most

of them against the German

people. A lot of land was

taken from Germany, most of

it being given to

surrounding countries,

such as Belgium and France.  Germany has an impending

recession on their hands.

The treaty also prohibited

Germany from uniting with

Austria, further

eliminating its economic

options. In terms of

Germany’s mental state, the

treaty required the nation

to admit full

responsibility for the war.

This also means that

Germany must claim

liability for all of the

other involved nation’s war

debts, further crippling

the nation’s economy. The

final number assigned for

Germany to pay has been set

at 6,600

League of Nations, an

organization designed to

protect and enforce world

peace in an attempt to

prevent another Great War.

This seems like the most

promising component of the

treaty. It is a good step

towards disassembling any

possibility of a nation or

group causing as much harm

to the world as has been

done in the past 5 years. As

we look towards the future,

keep in mind that we must

all work together to keep

ourselves safe, and may we

pray that no other conflict

of this nature will ever

arise.

NEW LOOK FOR NEWPORT

MANSIONS? By: OLIVIA GONZALEZ

 BOSTON - For many years,

Newport residents have

been designing their

houses to have the biggest

ballrooms and the most

elegant decor. But could

there be a new way for the

wealthy to design their

estates?

Frederick Law Olmsted,

beloved landscape

architect, has designed

masterpieces, ranging from

Central Park to the gardens

at the Biltmore mansion.

The main focus of these

manors has veered off the

path of chandeliers and

grand staircases, and

turned to landscape.

According to Olmsted’s

Yosemite Valley and

Mariposa Big Tree Grove

report, "the enjoyment of

scenery employs the mind

without fatigue and yet

exercises it; tranquilizes

it and yet enlivens it[.]"

Not only does adding a

garden to an already

luxurious home

tranquilize the body, but

George Vanderbilt, owner of

the Biltmore mansion, has

hired Olmsted to add an

80,000 acre forest, as well

as a lake with two small

islands. Stanford White,

one of the most successful

architects, has built

houses such as Newport’s

own Rosecliff mansion.

Stanford brings new ideas

to the table such as wider

porches.

So, if you’re looking to

renovate your home,

remember to add vast

gardens, bubbling

fountains, and wider

porches. Socialites: expect

more garden parties this

season!

From all around the world,

people from foreign lands

are coming to the United

States to become “modern

Americans.” These new

immigrants, from mostly

southern and eastern

Europe, are going to become

the new lower class of the

United States.

Most immigrants are

coming in search of work or

to escape dire situations

in their home country. This

new flow of workers is

turning out well for many

business owners because

the new workforce is

willing to work long hours

for less pay. This on its

own creates some natural

competition between the

immigrants and the lower

white class for jobs.

But, this new immigrant

population cannot be like

the upper class because

they are simply unfit to do

so. They will never be

economically, politically,

or religiously the same as

the upper class. In the wise

words of Andrew Carnegie,

A Recollection of The Gibson Girl: America’s New

Woman By: MARLEY MAJETTE

Stylishly dressed

assertive, the Gibson Girl

was a man's fantasy and a

young girls’ role model.

Charles Dana Gibson

captured the “New Woman” as

simply dressed and

independent. A woman with

magazine. A spot in Life

Magazine helped Charles

Dana Gibson promote his

idea of the “New Woman” and,

never seen so many pretty girls           in my life. I should have come to               California to create the Gibson         Girl!” Gibson already had an         idea for his Gibson Girl         collection based on his       surroundings. His idea of the         “New Woman” was simple and         independent. Gibson was able       to depict this new idea of a             woman via his collection which         in turn influenced society.

It is believed that the         original Gibson Girl may have

been a telephone operator or         radio woman.  were the aftershocks of this

event, and how it reshaped the           landscape of New York’s upper         class. The Vanderbilts, a       relatively newly wealthy family in         terms of New York, had never           truly been accepted into the         “400 Club,” the top 400 people           in New York’s hierarchy, which         was, at the time, controlled by           the Astor family. In a ploy to             gain entrance to the prestigious         club, Alva Vanderbilt did not         invite the Astors’ daughter,       causing great distress. Alva       claimed that since the Astors         had not formally acknowledged

However there was chatter

that the original Gibson

Girl was Gibson’s wife. She

sure does fit the profile,

simply dressed,

independent, and

beautiful. These were the

ideas of Gibson’s

interpretation of the “New

Woman”.

The Gibson Girl

collection marked the

creation of a new fashion

in the modern world. An art

that was interesting,

unique, and widely

accepted. The Gibson Girl

collection was realistic,

and when one looked at it,

he or she felt as though the

girls had a soul, a mind,

and a heart. Authors like

Henry James practiced

realistic writing and

Charles Dana Gibson

practiced realistic

fashion in his Gibson Girl

collection. Realism in art

is unembellished and

portrayed as much as it can

the full representation and

utter meaning of life. The

Collection portrayed the

view and meaning of the new

woman. The Gibson Girl

collection was

straightforward and to the

point.

Gibson was paid $50,000 by

VANDERBILT BALL SET NEW SOCIAL

STANDARD By: CHARLES GRYDER

New York, the height of

social class and hierarchy,

sees some of the most

spectacular and lavish

balls in the world.

Hundreds, sometimes

thousands of the city’s

wealthy show up in

horse-drawn carriages,

wearing jewel spangled

gowns and suits. Nothing

however compared to the

Great Costume Ball held by

Mrs. Vanderbilt, in March

of 1883. Nearly 1200 of the

world’s elite made an

appearance at the ball, each

of them with spectacular

outfits, dressed as

characters and celebrities

from all over the world.

has changed many times

since that one night, but

all these years later,

socialites everywhere

still try to top the Great

Costume Ball.

the Vanderbilts, she could not         invite their daughter.

This cunning social     strategy ended in success, with         Mrs. Astor personally delivering       her calling card to the         Vanderbilts’ house, and, in the         eyes of the New York socialites,           bringing the Vanderbilts to the         forefront of the city’s wealthy         community. This move showed       that the social hierarchy of the           rich was by no means static,           and that no one was safe in             terms of social status and         power. Alva Vanderbilt had       successfully forced her way into         the New York Elite, breaking the           Astors’     Though Andrew Carnegie is well known for his wealth and his home, his greatest accomplishment was his charitable giving. Throughout his life, Carnegie consistently donated his wealth out of the kindness of his heart to people in need. Carnegie believed that wealth was not something that should be kept to one’s self, but rather it should be shared with the community. It is estimated that his donations reached a total of $350,000,000. A large portion of this money went to create free public libraries throughout the country. These gracious donations helped communities change and grow for the better. As life goes on for other Americans, Andrew Carnegie’s strong legend of wealth, technology, and

stranglehold on the top

spot, but it was not only

this victory that makes

this ball significant.

The ball held by the

Vanderbilts set the new

standard for wealthy

parties and social events.

It also raised the bar on

how the media covered the

wealthy. The ball was

announced almost a month

before the actual event,

allowing buzz and rumors

to circulate throughout

the community. Journalists

were allowed inside the

venue before the actual

event, so they could see the

decorations and setup of

the ballroom. This all

contributed to the sheer

impact that this ball had

on the New York wealthy.

The Great Costume

Ball of 1883 sent

shockwaves through the New

York socialite scene, and

proved that the hierarchy

of the rich was susceptible

to massive change, and that

everyone was a target. It

placed a more competitive

feel among the “400 Club,”

with everyone trying to

one-up each other, each

party more lavish and

extravagant than the last.

Carnegie: A Legend

Alongside its neighbors,

Carnegie’s mansion looks

there is one difference.

Just like Carnegie ran his

Carnegie implemented a
