VOTE ON THE MOTION PASSES 18-0-1 9. UNFINISHED BUSINESS

A. Legislative Business 1) Action Item: SR #2017-03: Resolution in Support of Maintaining Current CNSM Science Learning

Center and Mobile Science Museum Programs (3rd & Final Reading)

Sen. Elasmar presented the following:

Added a whereas, where research shows inclusive learning when young, hands-on influences your major

Hoping to hire a full time director in the future

Want the university to increase support of SLC and MSM

End of December is the cut off to support animals

Task force created to look for a new director

Sen. Rincon commented that she has not heard that the task force was searching for a new director. She is unsure of what the first meeting would be concerning. Mr. Haller asked if there are any students on the Task Force. Sen. Elasmar responded that there are students including Sen. Rincon and the President of the CNSM Council. They are also looking to find volunteers from the SLC to be on the Task Force. Sen. Gomez comments that he has heard of shutting down the SLC and MSM and heard in the Beach Team meeting that a member was distraught that it would close down. He sees how important this subject is and how it is now reaching others in the University. Sen. Rincon commented that during the CNSM Council Meeting, the President noted that he would not be able to attend the first meeting and that is a problem in student involvement if the President is unable to attend future meetings VP Vournas commented that the Task Force will, in the future, remember to accommodate for him. If not, they recommend there be a representative from the CNSM Council to take his place. Sen. Nino comments that instead of discussing the resolution, what can the Senate do as a back-up in case the resolution falls through. VP Vournas commented that because it is a function of the University, it is not in the scope of our power to help and take over the SLC. Sen. Gomez says that there is not much more that the Senate can do about the MSM except writing and passing the current resolution. VP Vournas states that after passing the Resolution, the Senate must do a lot of follow-up and they encourage the entire Senate to participate and advocate to keep the SLC. Mr. Haller responds that if the Senate shows too much eagerness and assume too much

2) Action Item: SR #2017-04: Board of Directors/Senate Policy Agenda and Initiatives for 2016-2017 (2nd reading)

VP Vournas invites Senate to include any updates to the Policy Agenda and is asking for the opinion of the Senate to push the 3rd and final reading into the week after the next. Sen. Elasmar comments that Senate should begin to take initiative on social justice issues. Another goal would be to advocate and support spiritual health. Mr. Haller comments that the Senate should prioritize the Agenda because the list is too long and they will not be able to get all of the items finished.

1) Action Item: SR #2017-05: Support for Increased Financial Aid to International Students at CSULB (1st Reading)

Sen. Elasmar speaks about the resolution being worked on with Sen. Pandey and Sen. Musman and the perspective of international students and they want some points to be more revised. They do not want to limit students, but they want to focus on international students. VP Vournas asks if the Study Abroad Scholarship only applies to students coming from CSULB to another institution. Mr. Haller responds that international students who are planning to study at CSULB would apply for scholarships from their institutions. Sen. students, but that does not mean that they will meet the qualifications. There are no scholarships specifically for international students. VP Vournas clarifies that the Student Emergency Intervention and Wellness Program offers grants. Sen. Pandey says that this resolution will inform and motivate students to reach for higher education. He talks about his own position, he cannot receive financial aid and has to pay out of pocket in order to pay for out of state tuition. Sen. Al-Shoubaki comments that there are international students that are restricted in what they can or cannot accept by their government. She recommends reaching out to those students and find ways around giving scholarships by possibly providing them money for books or supplies. Sen. Gomez questions whether or not international students are allowed to receive any money other than the full tuition paid for by their government. Sen. Al-Shoubaki comments that Saudi students receive full tuition plus a stipend to spend money, but the Armani students do not receive a stipend, but some can depend on the student’s situation. A lot of students cannot afford the textbooks so they will mostly share their books. Sen. Gomez comments on how many students will be applying to these scholarships and asks about the qualifications of the scholarships and how it will effect certain students who are limited by their government. VP Vournas clarifies that they cannot specify who can receive the scholarship because there is a blind review, where an ID that is sent out to students and the committee that decides who receives the scholarship is chosen based on answers. Sen. Beltran comments that he had sat on a couple boards to approve of scholarships for the College of Engineering and knows that the donors of the scholarship must also approve the idea of who will be receiving the scholarships.
