WELCOME TO THE UNITED TO IGNITE AWARDS

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 16th anniversary celebration of Usher’s New Look. Your support of this annual event allows us to convene the proverbial village in an effort to demonstrate our continued devo-tion and support of our youth.

From the very beginning, Usher’s New Look recognized the correlation between the under-development of youth who do not have access to positive role models and resources, and their inability to connect traditional education to relevancy in their lives. When your present situation seems like a dead end, there is no dreaming towards a future. This inability to dream and to see hope beyond their current circumstances can lead youth down a path toward indifference and destruction. It was out of this realization that Usher’s New Look was founded in 1999 with a vision to give these youth a new outlook on their lives and future.

Many of our youth felt invisible before coming to Usher’s New Look. Today, our students recognize their individual light and purpose, and are excited about their promising futures. Our peer-to-peer training model focuses on developing well-rounded, forward-thinking, socially conscious leaders. Usher’s New Look stu-dents realize they have the power to be agents of change. As rising leaders they are committed to making this a better world for us all. That’s the new look effect!

Today is a celebration of the “United Igniting Village” that has surrounded Usher’s New Look for the past 16 years. It’s about recognizing role models and partnerships with our champions. Most great collaborations start with one individual who sparks others within their circle of infl uence to champion on behalf of a cause. We hope today’s Awards Luncheon will spark our new guests into action.

On behalf of our students and their parents, UNL Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for lighting the pathway and believing in Usher’s New Look students.

Join the movement and together, let’s be the light!

Michele Lai founded Kids 4 Kids in 2008, a Hong Kong-based non-profi t that cre-ates opportunities for young people from

all backgrounds to discover their talents, become creative problem solvers and engage in volunteering programs in their community, as well as globally. Through their joint-mission and partnership, Kids 4 Kids has provided Usher’s New Look U.S-based students with the opportunity to grow as leaders by training youth internationally in Hong Kong. Addi-tionally, Kids 4 Kids youth traveled to the U.S in

2012 to participate in UNL’s World Leadership Conference. Possessed with the unrelenting mission of developing global-minded youth and empowering them to change the world, Ms. Lai’s selfl ess com-mitment towards continuing the Power By Service Training Program (PBS) in Hong Kong is provid-ing children access to education—a basic need to which every human being is entitled. Michele Lai has further shown that change can begin with one individual who is committed to the highest standards of moral principles.

The Ignitor of Global Youth Empowerment award is given to a person or an organization committed to break-ing down barriers in youth leadership, and leading by example. This honoree provides new perspectives on youth, leadership, and community.

Elizabeth Williams joined Usher’s New Look Detroit as a struggling High School student and is now in her fi fth year of the program.

Currently a senior in college at Grand Valley State University, Elizabeth is a member of UNL’s Moguls in Training Program and studies advertising and public relations. In 2014, she and her sister Rebecca (also a UNL Detroit student), launched their own nonprofi t called Books IV Bonding, named after their mentor, Usher Raymond IV. After Rebecca visited Kenya with Usher’s New Look in 2011 and witnessed a school library badly burned by fi re,

she and Elizabeth were so moved that they teamed up to create the nonprofi t, which provides literature to struggling schools both in Kenya and Detroit. Ultimately, the sisters hope to create a cross-cultural dialogue between Kenya and Detroit youth by hav-ing them read the same books and discuss online. In November 2014, at the nationally-aired ‘BIG-GERTHAN Words Reading Webcast’, Usher and Scholastic helped the two young women offi cially launch the nonprofi t by providing them their fi rst real donation: 2,000 books!

The Ignitor of Global Youth Leadership Award is presented to a young person who shows significant com-mitment and long-term potential as a leader in their community, their country and the world. Individuals receiving this award embody the core values of Usher’s New Look; service, civic engagement, business skills, education, talent and creativity.

case manager for students in all UNL cities and acts as a role model for UNL’s young males, many of whom lack a strong male fi gure in their lives. He au-thored the UNL Pledge, a tradition that still lives on today, and helped launch UNL’s Emergency Scholar-ship Fund. This fund was specifi cally designed to

help UNL students who may face unforeseen fi nan-cial emergencies by providing High School Seniors and College Moguls-In-Training students with fi nancial support; including test prep and testing fees for the SAT, ACT, MCAT, etc., as well as college admission application fees and outstanding tuition balances. Overall, Gavin’s personal dedication to UNL and its programs has shown the students what it means to be a true servant leader and mentor.

The Knighted Ignitor award is presented to an individual who personifies the heart and soul of Usher’s New Look. The honoree is an individual who has supported youth with mentorship, opportunities to explore and assistance in pursuing post-secondary education.
