INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN OF
STUDY
INTRODUCTION
Kudumbasree, the poverty eradication mission of the state of Kerala is a
community based self help initiative involving poor women. It has been envisaged
as an approach to poverty alleviation focusing primarily on micro finance and
micro-enterprise development, and integrally linked to local self-government
institutions. National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)
initiated women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in India with the support of local
NGOs. The formation of SHGs led to the implementation of Swarnajayanti Gram
Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), launched by the Ministry of Rural Development. In a
similar line Kudumbashree is sponsored by local self-government institutions in
Kerala. Though local government institutions are not organically linked to
Kudumbashree, they are active partners in the programme.
Under Kudumbashree, women have organized themselves under a three –
tier community based organization. The bottom of the KDMS programme is
formed by the Neighborhood Groups (NHGs) comprising of 20-40 women
members selected from poor families. Area Development Society (ADS) is formed
at the level of ward of local government by federating 8-10 NHGs. The
Community Development Society (CDS) formed at the village panchayat level or
at the municipality (town) or corporation (city) is a federation of ADSs. CDS, the
highest tier, is the federation of all the ADSs in the respective panchayat (rural) or
municipality (town) or corporation (city).The KDMS system works in close
association with both the urban and rural local governments through a network of
Community Based Organizations working with women.
As on March 2008, KDMS has covered 36,53,655 families through 1,85,309
NHGs, 16,950 ADSs and 1058 CDSs. It also plays an important role as a nodal
agency for anti-poverty programmes sponsored by central, state and local
governments with focus on micro enterprise development. It has become a conduit
for a variety of government programmes. This poor women-oriented self help
group programme strives to tackle poverty in an integrated manner through an
effective convergence of resources and actions. Micro finance, especially provision
of thrift and credit services using bank linkage appears to have proved its viability.
Thrift and Credit activities at the level of NHGs promote saving habit among the
poor and help them access loans for both consumption and investment purposes.
These Thrift and Credit Societies play a significant role in channelising rural
savings for the poverty eradication programme of Kudumbashree. It has developed
training modules for micro- enterprise management and conducted several training
programmes. Kudumbashree mission is implementing the projects for the destitute.
Various development activities in the state of Kerala are being brought together
through the group dynamics developed under the Kudumbashree programme. This
has resulted in convergence of resources leading to poverty reduction (Jose, 2006).
It is significant to examine the functioning of KDMS programme in the state
of Kerala which has caught the attention world-wide, due to high social and
equitable development in the backdrop of limited economic growth. Kerala,
despite having a relatively low GNP, has achieved life expectancies comparable to
industrially advanced countries. Among various Indian states it has an impressive
Human Development Index (HDI).
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
To study the role of Kudumbasree in empowering the women.
To know how the Kudumbasree units functioning and processing.
To find out the various programs and campaign’s conducted by
Kudumbasree units.
To understand how the Kudumbasree units marketing their products.
Identify major problems being faced by Kudumbasree units, especially
related to production and marketing.
Critically examine the role of local government institutions and financial
institutions in the Kudumbasree units.
METHODOLOGY
Both primary and secondary data’s were used for the study. Primary data
collected by direct interview with the Kudumbasree units. Questionnaires were
used for the study.
Members of 6 kudumbasree units were interviewed.
Secondary data collected from the records of kudumbasree units and
kudumbasree articles, and the web-sites of Kudumbasree.
LIMITATIONS OF STUDY
Kudumbasree units are not much active in the study area, i.e.
Pathanamthitta, so these six units were selected from a wide search.
Some of the members were not much aware about project. So I had to
explain about the significance of the project and also about the course
MBA.
The members didn’t have much time to spend with me, because they were
busy with their jobs.
CHAPTER SCHEME
The project report has been presented in following format.
The first chapter gives an introduction and design to the study. It deals with the
introduction, objectives, methodology of the study, Limitations of the study
The second chapter is the analysis of the data’s collected from the 6 Kudumbasree
units in pathanamthitta district.
The third chapter deals with the findings, suggestions and conclusion derived from
the study.
CHAPTER- 2
COMPANY PROFILE
The Mission Statement
"To eradicate absolute poverty in ten years through concerted community
action under the leadership of local governments, by facilitating organization of
the poor for combining self-help with demand-led convergence of available
services and resources to tackle the multiple dimensions and manifestations of
poverty, holistically."
Organizational structure Kudumbashree was conceived as a joint programme of the Government of
Kerala and Nabard implemented through Community Development Societies
(CDSs) of Poor Women, serving as the community wing of local government.
Kudumbashree is formally registered as the "State Poverty Eradication
Mission" (SPEM), a society registered under the Travancore Kochi Literary,
Scientific and Charitable Societies Act 1955. It has a governing body chaired by
the state minister of LSG. There is a state mission with field officers in each
district. This official structure supports and facilitates the activities of the
community network across the state
KUDUMBASREE MARKETS
The ME survey conducted in October 2007 survey gave new insights to
Kudumbashree. Immediate interventions in the area of marketing, quality
improvement, production capacity enhancement, product standardization,
branding, packing etc. were seen to be imperative for the success of enterprises.
The first market intervention by the mission in this regard was to organize
monthly markets across districts. The monthly markets became operational in
October 2007 with the active support of the CDS's and entrepreneurs. Every
festival, special fairs are organised in which entrepreneurs of Kudumbahsree
participate. The Onam fairs of 2009 were a resounding success.
Local markets were organised in 1028 locations across the state. 65000 lady
entrepreneurs and farmers participated in the Onam fairs and over Rs.12 crore
turnover was generated over a period of 4 days.
Other marketing interventions include the Community Marketing Network,
Retail Shop, Sales and Marketing Enterprises and the Home shops. Direct
marketing, groups, participation in national and international trade fairs,
commercial tie ups for marketing, PIPS for marketing and developing retail outlets
are some of the other marketing interventions.

CHAPTER- 3 ANALYSIS OF DATA
ANALYSIS OF DATA
There are six Kudumbasree units under my study. These six units I selected
from three villages in Pathanamthitta district, they are Anicadu, mallappally,
kottangal. I visited the head office of 5 villages in Mallappally. From there I
collected the details of 10 kudumbasree units which are active in business. From
those 10 units I selected these 6 units for my study. Kudumbasree units under my
study are:

Soap making and snack business give them good return. But snacks is more
profitable for the unit
Govt. provides financial assistance to the units by providing loans with
subsidy. If the units submit a project to the govt. they study the project and grand
them loans for starting business. But in this unit the members are not ready to do
any business.
Govt. conducts camps and programs for the development of kudumbasree units
through villages. There is a CDS member for each ward and ADS members for
each units. They attend the camps and programs and take classes to its members.
There are camps in every month.
This unit markets their products through door to door selling.
The main marketing problems affected them are, low quality, poor packaging,
better substitutes.
There only a small scale sales, with a profit of 4700 per annum, so it is not easy to
calculate their market share.
2) Navarashmi Kudumbasree unit.

They are joining together on each Wednesday at 2 p.m. They have an

Each year they conduct an Onam market in Mallappally market. They sell
their agricultural products, tailoring products in this market. They have an
agriculture unit, they took 30 cent of land and doing agriculture of bean, bitter
ground,banana,brincal, cheera etc.

This unit earns a good amount of income from the agriculture, in onam
market also they sell their agriculture products, so they collect all their income
from the field of agriculture,

This unit markets their products through door to door selling, and also gives
directly to the market. And they conduct onam market for selling their products
The main marketing problems affected them are, vegetable sellers are not ready to
buy their products because they purchase vegetables in bulk quantities from
outside. So they are not ready to give a good price.
4) Navajyothi kudumbasree unit
Ward no-12, Kottangal village
Reg. number- 13/2011.
Started their unit in 2007
Total no. of members: 21
They are joining together on each Sunday at 3 p.m. They have an investment of
20 rupees in each meeting. Each member have equal share.
The main programs conducted by them are:
1) They have a stationery shop, they purchase stationary items from the nearest
wholesale market in Changanacherry and sell it with a higher rate.
2) They give animals like goat, hen, cow, to its members.
They have annual investment of Rs.20160. And the income from business are.
Their previous year’s income from all business is:

This table shows that the above 90% income of this unit is from their
stationary shop.

The main marketing problems affected them are, the shop is a small one. Not much
investment for the business, it’s in a local area so the customers are more
purchasing on credit.
5) Bhavana kudumbasree unit.
Padimon p.o, Powathil padi.

They joined together in each Saturday. Total number of members is 10. SBT is
the banker of this unit. They started their unit in 2005.
The main programs by them are:
1) Snacks.
2) Tailoring of special covers by avoiding the plastic.
They produce special type of cover for packing. The unit jointly produces these
covers by tailoring machine. The main feature of this cover is, it is made by a
special material. They never use plastic for production. Now a days the
government is banned plastic, so their product have a wide scope.

6). Anugraha kudumbasree units

They join together on each Saturday at 3 pm. They have an investment of
Rs. 20 per each meeting. They are 9 members, so the annual investment is 8640. It
is the unit which is most active in the study units. They have business of nutria
mix. Producing nutria mix for children’s aged between 6 months- 3 years. The
ingredients are wheat, nuts, soya, sugar, Bengal gram. They have a uniform for
nine members. They are very careful about the children’s, so they wearing special
cap to avoid hair in the nutria mix.
They have a building with three rooms. One store room, mill, packing room.
They started their unit with a capital of 440000. Out of this 100000 was subsidy.

Before starting their unit they attended a training program of I week in
Thrissur, and also PAP training in Trivandrum. They are providing their service to
200 anganvadi units, in Pathanamthitta, kottayam districts. They are getting order
from ICDS.

The profit is given to the bank account (Union Bank), they took only 6ooo
rupees as salary, remaining part of profit taken for the improvement of their unit.

This figure shows the annual turnover of each unit. Here anugraha
kudumbasree units have the lowest annual investment, but they have higher rate of
return as compared with other units.

From this figure we can find that Anugraha kudumbasree unit earns a big
rate of profit, when compared to other units. They have a good earnings per month.
Women empowerment program by kudumbasree:
Now women are ready to climb coconut trees :
Climbing coconut tress is considered to be the monopoly of men, and
increasingly it is felt that there are fewer people to climb. These views may be a
thing of the past as Kudumbashree and Raidco initiated a tree climbing training for
women. A package has been developed, where the equipment costing Rs.2,350 and
which can climb even the most twisted coconut trees, is given together with a
Scooty, mobile phone at a total cost of Rs.40,000, for which a bank loan can be
availed. Kudumbashree provides a subsidy of Rs.7500. The Panchayat also
provides support for equipment purchase. Women from from 90 Grama Panchayats
took part in the training cum demonstration organised at the Mallapuram
Municipal compound. It takes about two weeks of training and practise to master
climbing trees with these equipment. The equipment is currently in use in
Nedirippur, Harijan Colony, Chungattan and Edakari, where each person makes an
average income of Rs.650 per day. Traditional climbers also find this equipment
useful, and find they don't suffer from chest pain while using it. The equipment
also has a mechanism whereby it can be locked and the top of the tree cleaned
effectively. Technically proficient climbers can work on upto 110 trees in five
hours.

FINDINGS
Found that the Anugraha kudumbasree unit earns more profit than
others.
Number of members of kudumbasree is very low, its below 10 in
almost all units.
Annual investment of each unit is almost same.
Anugraha kudumbasree unit they have cooperation between
members, if all the units are like this they become successful.
Kudumbasree units are profitable for women, if they are ready to do the
business.
It empowers the women by lot of programs. Government conducts a lot of
promotional programs and campaigns for empowering the women.
The study reveals found that how government helps the kudumbasree units
by providing funds.
Kudumbasree units are not much active in the study area. Only a small
number of women are part of this.
There are profitable units, so it can be found that kudumbasree units can
make profit.
Members are not ready to go for promotional programs and campaigns
conducted by government.
SUGGESTIONS
Kudumbasree units producing only home made products, they are not
concentrated on export quality products.
Some of the members have lack of knowledge if the unit empower them they
become productive.
Women must utilize these services by doing businesses.
Government has lot of funds to spend for this program. But the public never
utilize this income. So they must ready to do business or program with the
help of government.
The members must go for the promotional programs and campaigns
conducted by government.
CONCLUSION.
The study shows that the women can make a good earning by utilizing
the kudumbasree service provides by government. Kudumbasree units try to
Empower the women, but women are not ready to go for the campaigns and
promotional programs. Out of the six units, only two units are properly working.
Bhavana and Anugraha kudumbasree units working very well and they are doing
their business with a good profit. Other units are only for name sake. They are not
ready to work.
Kudumbasree units can empower the women. But the women are not
ready to empower.
