Amier Naji, Piano & 2011 Symphony Youth Competition Winner

Shizuo Z Kuwahara and Symphony Orchestra Augusta open the 57th season with an evening of passionate works reflecting the origins of love and the triumphs and tragedies of relationships through the works of three of the Romantic era’s most admired composers.

Guest Soloist Amier Naji has been playing the piano for almost 12 years. Studying under Mrs. Hiroko Hogarth and most recently, concert pianist and Juilliard graduate, Mr. Denver Oldham, Mr. Naji has won numerous awards from the Georgia Music Teachers Association, Georgia Music Educators Association and National Guild of Piano Teachers auditions.

Legendary violinist and concertmaster of the Boston Symphony for over 20 years, and music director (Utah Symphony Orchestra), Joseph Silverstein conducts and plays the violin in Vivaldi’s best-known work and among popular Baroque music, The Four Seasons. Wolfgang Amadues Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 is one of the last three symphonies written by one of the most enduringly popular of classical composers.

Danté’s Inferno – one of the greatest tragedies of all time – was Liszt’s inspiration for Mephisto Waltz No. 1. Pairing it with Stravinsky’s great gamble, and Schubert’s Great C Major makes this an amazing selection of monumental works!

Written only two years ago by Oscar and Grammy-winning composer Tan Dun, The Love was brought to the attention of Maestro Kuwahara by SOA Associate Concertmaster Micah Gangwer. Tan Dun’s works can be heard in the feature films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Memoirs of a Geisha. While Walton’s symphony sounds simplistic, it is actually a very difficult piece. What you hear on the surface is not always what it appears to be – achieving such pure music is truly a work of art.

The history of rock n’ roll would not be complete without the invaluable contributions of 1960’s legend Neil Sedaka. For over five decades Sedaka has written, produced and performed countless songs such as Calendar Girl, Breaking Up is Hard to Do and Oh Carol! Sedaka will join Maestro Kuwahara and Symphony Orchestra Augusta for a magical night of timeless classics.

This American vocal group achieved fame as one of the most successful names to have recorded with Motown Records. The Temptations were the first Motown act to earn a Grammy and in 1989, six members were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Furthermore, My Girl, Papa was a Rollin’ Stone and Ain’t Too Proud to Beg are listed among the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll.

From his early years with the Jackson 5 to his mega-hit album Thriller, Michael Jackson stormed the music industry with hit after hit. “Music of Michael Jackson” takes you through each era from ABC, I’ll Be There to Beat It, Thriller, and The Way You Make Me Feel. Performed by Symphony Orchestra Augusta and amplified with Windborne’s full band and vocals from James Delisco, this concert pays homage to the King of Pop’s influential and celebrated career! The concert will feature guest conductor Brent Havens.

Described by Gramophone Magazine as ‘one of the finest young string quartets,’ whose members are‘musicians with fascinating things to say,’ the Doric String Quartet has received glowing responses from audiences and critics across the globe. In 2008 the Quartet won 1st prize in the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan.

The Georgia Guitar Quartet has emerged as an exciting new voice in today’s chamber music scene. These four young men from the American South deliver a high-energy blend of breathtaking virtuosity and imaginative programming while taking an adventurous approach to classical music. GGQ draws inspiration from the ever-evolving pallette of music which has influenced them: classical masters such as Bach, Brahms, experimentalists in the vein of Cage, Bartók, and Stockhausen, and contemporary rock icons like Radiohead and Led Zeppelin.

Maestro Shizuo Kuwahara and SOA debut at Festival Hall in Greensboro with a stunning program of Rachmaninoff and dramatic arias by Metropolitan Opera Bass-Baritone Jeffrey Wells, who debuted at the Metropolitan Opera’s opening night during the 1988-89 season. From May-October, the Oconee Performing Arts Society presents Mr. Wells in their Artist-in-Residence program throughout Greene County.

Maestro Shizuo Kuwahara and SOA present The Composer is Dead – “a deliciously morbid entertainment inthe vein of Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events” [San Francisco Chronicle]. The concert – free and open to elementary age children in grades K-5 – is presented in cooperation with Augusta State University & Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre. The Composer Is Dead is a collaboration from best-selling children’s author Lemony Snicket and acclaimed composer Nathaniel Stookey. The Composer Is Dead uses mystery and humor to introduce children to the orchestra, in a 21st-century update of the Peter and the Wolf tradition.

Tim Marrone TimTunes joins Symphony Orchestra Augusta as a performing guest artist to present top-quality theatrical interpretations of classical, modern and original scores. Tim Marrone is the actor, “clown”, physical comedian, and silent character behind TimTunes. Tim received his training at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City and has appeared on stage throughout the Northeast, most recently in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.

Gabriel Piqué is 18 years old and has been playing saxophone for 7 years. He is currently enrolled as afreshman at The University of Georgia and plans to double major in music and biology. His previous saxophone teachers include Joel Cruz, Stacey Wade and Dr. Robert Foster. Gabriel has performed with the All-State Band, Conservatory Jazz Band, Conservatory Wind Symphony and many others.

Tim Marrone, Narrator Gabriel Piqué, Saxophone, 2011 Symphony Youth Competition, 2nd Place Winner Please join SOA in participating with orchestras throughout our nation in fighting hunger. In collaboration with Golden Harvest Food Bank, SOA is asking audiences at our October 27th and February 9th Pops! at the Bell concerts to bring food donations at each of these shows. The food will be distributed across the CSRA to those in need by Golden Harvest Food Bank. Collection boxes will be located throughout the Bell Auditorium –help SOA feed the hungry in our community.

This national Orchestras Feeding America project, initiated in 2009 by the League of American Orchestras, was inspired by the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained string player, living on the streets of Los Angeles as a result of a mental illness. Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez noticed Nathaniel, and was drawn to his talent, intelligence, and passion for Beethoven – leading to the creation of the film, The Soloist, about Mr. Ayers. This film and the Orchestras Feeding America project are testaments to the power of music.
