Del Mar College distributes more than $30 million in financial aid annually through scholarships, grants, loans and work-study opportunities to eligible students. The College is committed to providing educational opportunities to all residents, regardless of their financial status. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. Some aid is based on financial need and some on academic performance. Many students benefit from a package of aid options that include grants, loans, scholarships or other assistance.Submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form online at www.fafsa.gov. There is no charge for submitting this form. Del Mar College Financial Aid Services uses the information compiled on the FAFSA to make financial aid awards. Applications for financial assistance will be accepted after January 1 of each year for the following academic year. Priority deadlines are established to allow ample time for the processing of applications. It is recommended that students apply at least two months before the priority deadline for applicable enrollment period.

General Information

Financial aid is available for students who, without assistance, would not be able to afford college. While the family and student are expected to assume a major responsibility for the costs associated with attending a degree or certificate program at Del Mar College, there are resources available to supplement their efforts. The role financial aid plays in paying for a student’s higher education exists only when there is a gap between school costs and the ability of the family to pay, not their willingness to pay.

Financial aid programs can be placed into four categories: Grants • - funds that do not have to be repaid. (Need based)Employment • - funds that have to be earned.Loans • - funds that have to be repaid. Scholarships • - funds that do not have to be repaid.

Funding for these programs comes from the federal and state governments, college and private sources. Most financial aid is awarded on the basis of need, which is the difference between the student’s resources and the cost of education.

District residents pay $51 per semester hour with a minimum tuition of $51 per semester. Out-of-district residents pay $51 per semester hour with a minimum tuition of $51 per semester plus an out-of-district fee of $50 per semester hour. Out-of-state residents and residents of foreign countries pay $88 per semester hour with a minimum tuition of $250 per semester and out-of-district fees of $50 per semester hour.

Additional charges are added for courses that have a lab. Books are approximately $1,200 per semester for an average full-time course load. Students enrolled in occupational education programs are required to purchase tools, books, and supplies at an average cost anywhere from $350-$1,000. Please note that the tuition and fee cost is subject to change. Contact the Office of Admissions and Registrar for additional information.

It is not unusual for these costs to vary depending on individual circumstances and preferences. Each student is placed in one of the following three budget categories:

Students traveling from an out of the college district town will be provided an allowance for the higher cost of transportation. There may be additional costs related to certain majors or occupational programs. Information concerning required equipment, uniforms, supplies, tools

and books should be directed to the specific department. These budgets are estimations of the costs of attending Del Mar College. A student’s actual cost may vary depending on his or her situation.

Who can get Financial Aid?

U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen. •

Male students, 18-26 years old, who are registered •with Selective Service. A student who is enrolled at least half time. In some •cases, a student can enroll for only three (3) hours of college credit and still receive a Federal Pell Grant. A student who is working toward a degree or a •certificate. A student who is making satisfactory academic •progress as defined by the Del Mar College Financial Aid Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

A student who does not owe a refund on any Title IV •Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal State Student Incentive Grant or any other Higher Education Grant program received at any institution previously attended. A student who is not in default on any Title IV •Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Stafford Student Loan, Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students, Federal Supplemental Loan to Students, Federal Direct Student Loan or any other Higher Education Act Loan Program received at any institution previously attended.

How do I apply? In order to qualify for most forms of financial aid, you must first submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The results of the FAFSA will help us determine your eligibility for federal, state and institutional aid. The ideal procedure for completing your FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.gov. (You may consider applying for a PIN through the U.S. Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov before completing the FAFSA. Dependent students must have at least one parent apply for a PIN also). When applying for financial aid, note that the Del Mar College federal school code is 003563. This procedure is also available in Spanish.

What am I applying for? Del Mar College offers financial assistance in the form of grants, scholarships, employment and loans through participation in federal, state and local financial aid programs. The source and the amount of a student’s award will vary greatly on the financial aid need as established by the Department of Education. Priority is given to students with the greatest documented financial need and whose applications were completed by the priority deadlines.

Satisfactory Academic ProgressFederal regulations require educational institutions to review the academic progress of all students applying for student financial assistance. Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) must be maintained in order to receive aid. Be advised that these standards apply to ALL financial assistance programs, unless the terms of a particular program provide otherwise. A student’s academic progress is evaluated after each long semester and summer semester. The evaluation includes all coursework attempted for the semester/session. It also includes all periods of the student’s enrollment, even those for which the student did not receive financial aid. Scholarships are made available to students based on merit, financial need and/or other criteria. Scholarships are provided at no cost to the student as a gift from various donors or organizations interested in helping students achieve their educational goals.

Del Mar College Foundation ScholarshipsDel Mar College Foundation (DMCF) has numerous supporters who provide scholarships to Del Mar College students enrolled in credit classes in all majors; and for both full-time (12 or more credit hours) and part-time students (6-11 credit hours). Because financial need is required for some scholarships, you are advised to complete the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Financial Aid), as it will help identify your individual need and maximize your opportunities for financial assistance. Each year Del Mar College students are awarded more than 1,000 scholarships. Most of the scholarship funds available are awarded for the academic year (fall and spring semester) to give students the benefit of two semesters of financial support. A lesser number of scholarships are awarded for spring semester and again for summer sessions to accommodate students who were unable to meet the academic year deadline. Del Mar College Foundation provides a streamlined, single application process that allows students to apply for all scholarships for which they meet the criteria. DMCF will match your application with the scholarship that best matches your needs to the criteria. Most students will only be awarded one DMCF scholarship.

Q: I receive federal or state financial aid, am I still eligible to apply for scholarships?A: yes! Students receiving federal or state financial aid are also eligible to apply for scholarships.

Q: Will I receive special consideration if I get my application in early?A: No. All completed and signed applications received by the application deadline will be considered for scholarships. Remember, financial information must be completed in order to be considered for any scholarship where financial need is one of criteria.

Q: Who selects the scholarship recipients?A: Scholarship selection committees are comprised of volunteer community leaders and educational professionals.

Q: I received my high school graduation credentials through GED Certification. Am I eligible to apply for scholarships?A: yes! Your GED Certification carries the same weight as a high school diploma in consideration for most of our scholarships.

Q: I have submitted my completed application by the deadline. When and how will I find out if I have received a scholarship award?A: Most academic year recipients will be notified during the month of July. Spring semester recipients will be notified in December prior to winter break. Summer session recipients will be notified in early May. Notification will be to your personal e-mail address. If you do not have a personal e-mail address, a letter will be sent to the address provided on your scholarship application.

Q: I was notified that I received a scholarship and have accepted it, when should I expect my check?A: Scholarship awards will be placed into your account at Del Mar College to cover the cost of tuition and fees. Academic year awards will be split equally between fall and spring semesters. If scholarship criteria allow, any funds remaining after tuition and fees have been paid will be transferred to your HigherOne card or provided to you by check to enable you to purchase textbooks, supplies and cover other college expenses.

State-Funded ScholarshipsDel Mar College also administers a number of State Funded Scholarships. These scholarship programs are processed by the Financial Aid Services. To be considered for the following scholarships, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need. Professional Nursing Scholarships: Funds are available by the State of Texas to encourage students to become professional nurses. No individual award may be for more than the student’s financial need. The following eligibility requirements also apply:

Top 10% Scholarship Program:Funds are provided by the State of Texas to encourage students who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class. Qualifying students who have had their FAFSA completed and processed by March 15 and have financial need are entitled to receive a $2,000 scholarship (Fall semester only) if they enroll full-time. Initial eligibility requirements are:

Must be a Texas resident;•

Demonstrate financial need;•

Complete a Recommended or Distinguished High •School Curriculum;Rank in the top 10% of their high school class;•

Graduate from an accredited • public high school in Texas; andEnroll full-time.•

Recipients are selected by the department’s Scholarship Subcommittee. Selection is based upon musical performance, skills, or academic performance. How Do You Get Your Scholarship Funds?Scholarships are placed in your student account at Del Mar College. They are first used to pay for tuition and fees. If any funds remain after those payments, the balance will be made available to your for books and other college related expenses through your HigherOne card, bank account or by check, unless the scholarship criteria prohibits excess funds being used for these purposes.

Student Emergency Scholarship GuidelinesNotice: Processing of emergency applications could take up to five working days

Emergency funds are limited and availability varies from semester to semester. Financial Aid funds cannot be duplicated through emergency scholarships. Apply for Financial Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov prior to completing an emergency application.Processing of your application will begin when the complete application packet has been received by the Office of Development. For the status of your request, contact the Office of Development at 361-698-1033. To accept a scholarship award in person, you may come to the office at the DMC Center for Economic Development, Room 114, 3209 S. Staples (S. Staples and Kostoryz).

The Morris L. Lichtenstein, Jr. Center for Early Learning is an instructional facility for the Child Development/Early Childhood program. This facility provides on-campus child care for ages 0-5 years, and school-age programs may be available. Professionally trained staff provide part-time and full-time care during the week. Counseling services are available to assist each student in overcoming challenges which may interfere with their academic progress and goals. Professional staff is available on a walk in basis to help students deal with academic, career and personal/social issues. All counseling is voluntary and confidential. If your family income is $30,000 per year or less, you may be able to attend Del Mar College at no cost. Tuition and fees for a full-time student at Del Mar College is only $989 per semester if you live in the Calallen, Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, Tuloso-Midway or West Oso Independent School Districts. If you live outside those school districts, full-time student tuition is only $1,589.Federal financial aid through Pell Grants provide up to $5,500 per year to cover the cost of higher education for eligible students. The amount you receive is determined by the cost of your education, your family’s ability to cover some of those costs and the number of courses you take. Most students eligible for Pell Grants receive funds for tuition and fees and still have funds to cover books, supplies and transportation. Pell Grants are NOT loans; these funds do not have to be repaid.

Q. Am I eligible?A. If you are a U. S. citizen or eligible noncitizen and have a high school diploma, GED or the equivalent, you are eligible to apply for financial aid.

Q. How do I get started?A. You need to fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Online FAFSA application forms are accessible at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Use the Del Mar College Code 003563 on your FAFSA application. You also need to apply for admission to the College at www.applytexas.org.

Q. What’s the cost to apply for a FAFSA?A. Submitting a FAFSA form is free.

Q. Is there an age limit for Pell grant eligibility?A. No. To be eligible for a Pell Grant, you need to be a high school graduate, have a GED or the equivalent.

Q. What if I need help with the FAFSA form?A. Del Mar College Financial Aid professionals will help you. Come to the Harvin Student Center on the East Campus or the Coleman Student Center on the West Campus for assistance.

Q. Are other Del Mar College students receiving Pell grants? A. Yes, last year more than 5,100 DMC students received a total of more than $18 million in Pell Grant educational funds.

Q. What’s the deadline for submitting a FAFSA?A. FAFSA forms are evaluated throughout the year. However, to ensure you are considered for every financial aid opportunity you qualify for, priority submission dates are:

•  October 1 for Spring Semester•  February 15 for Summer Semesters•  May 1 for Fall Semester and next academic year

Q. Do you have to take a full-time course load?A. No, Pell Grants are calculated on the number of semester hours you take and the cost of your tuition and fees.

Q. What information do I need to complete the FAFSA? A. Driver’s license, Social Security Number, W-2 forms from employment, financial statements including prior income tax returns—yours if you are 24 years of age or are considered independent due to special circumstances (as defined by the U. S. Department of Education); you and your spouse’s if you are married; you and your parents’ if you are a dependent.

Q. Why do I need to supply family financial information on the FAFSA?A. In many cases, a family income of $30,000 per year or less makes you eligible for federal financial aid, but you need to provide documentation. Under Federal Financial Aid guidelines, you and your family are primarily responsible—to the extent possible—to pay for your college expenses.

Q. What if my family doesn’t want to provide financial information?A. Consider your college education is an investment that will pay big rewards for you and your family. On average, a Del Mar College degree increases your annual average income by $7 for every $1 invested.*

Q. What happens to the information I supply on the FAFSA?A. Only those Financial Aid professionals with special credentials have access to your FAFSA information to verify your eligibility, as required by the U.S. Department of Education.
