The first step.Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Filing early allows us to process your financial aid award information to assist you with your financial planning. Be sure to complete the FAFSA as soon after Jan. 1 as possible for the academic year in which you plan to enroll.

Students and parents of dependent students must each apply for a FAFSA Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID number at www.studentaid.gov/fsaid. Students and parents are required to use a FSA ID to access the FAFSA. The ID is used to confirm identity when accessing financial aid information and electronically signing federal student aid documents. Once you have your FSA ID and the required income information, you are ready to complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.gov.

alfred state’s FaFsa school code is 002854.

NYS residents attending full-time apply separately for the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) either through a link on the FAFSA confirmation page or at www.tap.hesc.ny.gov/totw.

New York State Residents “Alfred State is committed to expanding out-of-state student enrollment. We’re pleased that SUNY has given the College flexibility to reduce the out-of-state tuition rate for associate degree programs. We have made the decision to set the out-of-state associate degree rate at the lowest allowable level. This also benefits those interested in baccalaureate programs, since students can save significant dollars by starting in the corresponding associate degree before completing their final two years.”

-Deborah J. Goodrich, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management

“Have you checked out Alfred State’s

scholarship opportunities? They even have

one specifically for out-of-state students!”

How we determine your financial aid award.Types of Financial aid.Generally, financial aid is categorized into three types.• Grants and scholarships are considered free money and DO NOT need to be repaid.• Loans DO need to be repaid and should be considered as serious commitments.• Employment through federal college work study pays students for part-time work.

What determines the aid we offer?• Your financial need.• Your eligibility based on each fund’s specific criteria.• Fund availability at the time we receive your application.

Be sure you apply!More than 89% of the student body receives some type of assistance.

all students are considered. All students are considered for all types of aid. Under the direction of federal and state regulations, financial aid packages are determined based on data provided by the student on the FAFSA and an expected family contribution (EFC) is calculated. The EFC is the building block of any financial aid package.

The college then subtracts the EFC from the annual cost of attendance which includes tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, transportation, personal expenses, and any additional curriculum costs. The result is your eligibility for needs-based federal aid.

Students accepted to Alfred State with a valid FAFSA record will receive a financial aid award letter with instruction for viewing and accepting awards online.

For more information about individual types of aid, please refer to our college catalog or the Alfred State website at www.alfredstate.edu > Financial aid.

Being timely pays off. The Student Records and Financial Services Office recommends that students file for financial aid as soon after Jan. 1 as possible even if they have not yet been accepted by the school. The following timetable and checklist can be used to guide students through key steps of the financial aid process.

Look the calendar over carefully. If you’re not sure what’s required, please don’t hesitate to contact the Student Records and Financial Services Office. You can also schedule an appointment with a financial aid counselor.

Remember to follow these points.

• You should apply for aid even if you think you don’t qualify

• Apply early; don’t put it off.• Keep copies of everything you submit with

the date and address where you submitted it.• Respond promptly to all requests for

information.• Always ask your questions.

Alfred State’s out-of-state baccalaureate cost for tuition and fees is 22% lower than the national average.
