Export award for CombiliftCombilift has been named the Best Overall Exporter toGermany in the Irish Exporter to Germany Awards, organised by Enterprise Ireland and the German-IrishChamber of Industry and Commerce. Combilift MDMartin McVicar received the trophy from the Ministerfor Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn TD.

The award marks 50 years of Irish export successto Germany and the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s firsttrade office in Frankfurt in 1962. Combilift entered theGerman market in 1999 and since then has notched upsales of 100 million euro to German companies. Viewedagainst large mainstream competitors such as Lindeand Jungheinreich, as well as a German 4-way forkliftmanufacturer, this is a major achievement.

Combilift attributes its success to its policy oftaking customer feedback on board and developinghandling solutions. This has gained the company bluechip customers such as Liebherr, Thyssen Krupp, WeberHaus, Veka, Schüco, Hagebau and more. Repeat ordersfrom these companies underline the suitability ofCombilift products for their operations.

Living in Contrasts was the theme at the 6th Interprint Furniture Days event. The idea-driven décor team presentedleading trends for the future and provided visitors with ideas for further processing. The aim was to show how trendsevolve and how they can be developed into market-ready products.

For three weeks in November, three times a day, visitors were able to attend presentation workshops where Interprintcontrasted the natural woods it is known for with the plain colours Visual Perfect, bringing about a varnished-like effect.Technologies like the 3D-printer, ready to enter the big market of end consumers, were also introduced. The newly

decorated showroom, packed with ideas, is itself astudy in contrasts, featuring wood, white andReseda Green.

Salvatore Figliuzzi, Marketing and DécorDevelopment Manager explained: “We haveadapted the luminous accent colours that weencounter every day on the web and combinedthem with natural varieties of wood. Nocturno, forexample - a very dark, almost black, blue - revealsthe fascination with the Chanel perfume Bleu.Combined with wood décors this dramaticallybeautiful colour makes a noble ensemble.”

Interprint are already looking forward to the7th Furniture Days event in 2013.

Few individuals have beenquite so influential as GerdNey on the birth of panelprocessing in the UK, yet, despite his company’sgrowth and reputation as achampion of start-up businesses and smaller companies, it’s Gerd’s owndesire to provide much morethan machines which driveshis company’s success.

FURNITURE JOURNAL JANUARY 2013 • 5

Where do I begin to tell thestory of the man who, perhaps more than any other,

pioneered the introduction of panelprocessing to Britain in the early 80s?Maybe I should start a decade earlierwhen, married with a family and in hisearly thirties, he founded the companyEBM (Edge Banding Machines) andbegan to build edgebanders. Orperhaps I should begin with the heatingplaten business he started which, together with EBM, he expanded intoFrance, Italy, Ireland, the UK, the USAand beyond, growing the workforce to250 before his company collapsedspectacularly in the early eighties.

He is philosophical about themistakes he made in his early yearswhilst striving for relentless growth. They have given him a greaterempathy for the problems faced bystartup and growing businesses. Andthey’ve helped him introduce andhone the services and products hisCoventry-based company offers today. But despite his growing ambition, GerdNey does not come across as a typicalmanaging director, nor even a typicalentrepreneur. There’s no doubt he isdriven. Very driven. But these days, though he is quick to spot anopportunity which could benefit hiscustomers, it is not so much profit andthe desire for growth which fire him.

He speaks of his company’s manysmaller clients with warmth and almostecclesiastical affection. His father was aclergyman - for a while it was hisintention to follow suit - and the desireto nurture and encourage is deeplyingrained. With discernible pride, herecounts how, when he left Germanyfor England in 1982, “There was nothingfor the smaller guy in the UK. The panelindustry was in its embryonic stage.Edging was a new process. Only heatingbars were available. I helped my smallercustomers to become competitors ofthe bigger companies. Like mushrooms, smaller guys appeared, all wanting tostart on their own.”

Though he admits his ownbackground is more commercial thantechnical, Gerd dislikes “sharp” sellingintensely. “We never cultivate this kindof mentality,” he says. “What we want isfor our customer to buy from us. Wewant to build a relationship that isstrong enough for the customer to wantto put an order on our table.” It’s anapproach which seems altogethercompatible with his chosen market.

When Ney Ltd first opened itsdoors to customers, its offer was panelprocessing machinery, particularlyedgebanders, edgebandings, adhesivesand other related consumables. Itremains the backbone of today’s NeyLtd, the company Gerd and his fellow

directors have grown into a multi-million pound business and put theirown quite unique stamp on. Over theyears, despite the devastating fire ofAugust 2012 (which might have seenany other company close its doors forgood), the company’s portfolio ofmachines, hardware, foils andconsumables continues to expand. Theaim is to be a complete solution for thesmaller manufacturer. Gerd hates theterm “one stop shop” but that sums itup perfectly.

It was almost 20 years ago (whenthe bank manager Ney Ltd had workedwith for many years was maderedundant) that Gerd seized on theopportunity to launch a new servicewhich would benefit his flock. In hisbank manager he found a new recruitwho helped set up a finance companyand arrange underwriters. “It was themiddle of a recession,” he recalls. “Cashwas tight. The only way I could do itwas to mortgage my home. But when Iknow something is right, I go for it.These guys needed help. It was make orbreak time for them - and us.”

Gerd clearly revels in involvementwith his customers and the finance sideof the business enables him to help withall manner of problems from financialand partnership issues to expansion. Hehas plans to introduce other bolt-onservices in the future - and there are newproducts being introduced all the time.

Most recently, Ney Ltd has begun todevelop its own collection of doors. In

the made-to-measure, any size, anycolour, any design market, Gerd knowshe has stiff competition but, in his ownquiet way, he recounts how his forayinto the doors market began by helpinga company in difficulty. “We areoffering three ranges,” he explainsenthusiastically. “A vinyl-wrappedrange, an acrylic-edged range and aspray-painted range.” It may sound likea small beginning but Ney’s Elegancerange includes 20 designs from Shakerto Tongue & Groove in 30 vinyl finishes;the acrylic-edged De Novo range bringsduo-edged and matching edges to highgloss - this time in 10 standard coloursand with 10-day turnaround; and thepainted Impressions range, with itsmodern Slab, Atlas, Vogue and Shakeroptions in high gloss or matte finishcomplete the offer. Always mindful ofthe smaller customer, Elegance alsocaters for the door replacement marketwith materials for end panels.

So what does the future hold forNey Ltd?

Circumstances have alreadynecessitated a move to new premisesbut there is no dampening of spirits.Gerd’s eye is already on growth and hismind is on ever new ways to make lifeeasier for his customers. New products, new services - both are in the plan. Allhe will say is watch this space. Thereare many more chapters yet to unfoldin the Ney story.

There are few shows in the furniturecomponents and materials sectorto rival the cosiness of Sicam. It’s

an altogether pleasant experience withlight, airy, well laid out halls and astrong focus on products. Despite thecomments of some exhibitors about thelocation, Pordenone seems to attract thecrowds - especially the home crowds -and it always surprises me how, evenbefore Interzum, which is generallyconsidered to be the launch pad for newproducts, Sicam provides a spotlight formore than its fair share of new ideas andup-coming trends. It’s a testament to thecreditbility of the fair and the hard workof the organisers that so many exhibitorsnow see it as an unmissable event - andentrust the success of their productlaunches to it.

So let’s find out what was new.Hinge, slide and cabinet interior

fittings manufacturers have beenespecially busy of late with the latestgeneration of products to woo reluctantconsumers. The race is on for theslimmest, the sexiest, the sleekest and the

highest quality feel. With its new Vionaro,Grass showed stand visitors just how thinit was possible to make a drawer side andhide a slide inside. This really is a starproduct but it won’t be for everybody. It’s aimed squarely at the designer end ofthe market. Salice and Blum both offerednew undermounted slide solutions whileSamet turned its attention in analtogether different direction with LightBox, a new version of its highperformance Smart Box, now madesexier with LED-lit glass drawer sides.

Several manufacturers launched newhinge options. The trend continuestowards ever more efficient soft closefunctions - some, like Samet’s, offeradjustable power settings so only oneself-close hinge is required per door - butnow in combination with highlyfunctional three-dimensional adjust-ment. This is a feature which will surelygo down well with time-pressed fitters. And for the consumer, the business endof hinge design is being madeincreasingly more attractive with a varietyof cup and crank covers. Although it was

first seen in 2009, Sensys by Hettich stillprovides the benchmark for aestheticsbut for new at Sicam, Salice’s Titaniumfinish is just gorgeous.

Much more emphasis is beingplaced on what happens inside thecabinet than ever before. Once upon atime, chrome was the only option forwirework. Vauth & Sagel’s new mattaluminium takes the company’s Artlineoffer to five finish options.

Although, personally, lift-up doors arenot something I’d ever want in mykitchen, they are very much in vogue atthe moment and several manufacturersshowed new, more attractive liftmechanisms at Sicam. Blum’s Aventos HKand HK-S stay lifts and Kesseböhmer’sFree II offer powerful lifting capacitywhile the Lift-O-Mat by Stabilus has beengiven a facelift in the form of sleek coversin a variety of colours.

The printers had all been very busy.On the woodgrains theme, oak remainshugely popular with several new optionsmaking their debuts. Saw-cut, once themost prominent of the rustic directions,

seems to be taking something of a backseat with more subtle interpretations onthe stands of the main players. Perhapssaw-cut was too rustic for widespreadacceptance. Progress in Elm décors alsoappears to have slowed and I can’t recallseeing a single new exotic. All the majorprinters at Sicam were emphasising grainand structure and were keen todemonstrate their expertise at in-registerembossing. So convincing is it nowadaysthat it’s hard to distinguish foil fromveneer. Matt and supermatt effects, especially in unicolours, were beingshown effectively in combination withwoodgrains - and figuring out whichwork best together just became a wholelot simpler with Schattdecor’s UniqueColours Collection. Schattdecor alsoshowed an imaginative range ofdigitally-printed décors.

In its four short years, Sicam hasbecome a show not to miss. Far fromprovincial, or an Italian home show, it’struly international and well worth a visit.Watch out for the next in October 2013!www.exposicam.it/english

superb süddekorThe interaction betweendesign and technologyprovided a strong focus fordécor specialist Süddekor’spresentation on a 105m2

stand at this year’s Sicam.

Troja Oak - knotty, rustic and bang

on trend - made its debut on

Süddekor’s 105m2 stand at Sicam.

Structure comes from embossing in

register and Süddekor’s presentation

showed absolute mastery of this art.

Lentini was one of several impressive

décors on the Sicam stand. Shown

right is another newcomer, Baron Elm.

This year’s Sicam exhibition saw the 2D Group (Süddekor,Dakor and Süddekor Art) exhibiting on a 105 squaremetre stand which was packed with new ideas and the

latest on-trend matt and textured décors.Within the context of a newly-developed, modular

presentation concept, Süddekor showcased wood structuresranging from elegant to rustic. The vintage theme, with tracesof aging and usage, remained a hot topic at Sicam.Süddekor’s beautifully crafted Cézanne and Lefkas Oak fitperfectly with this trend and many of its wood décors wereshown in conjunction with super-matt finish. Super-matt wasalso seen in trendy stone and fantasy décors, along with therust look.

A particular spotlight was given to ever-popular oak décorswith Lefkas Oak and Edison Oak illustrating the contrastbetween rustic and natural straight-lined planked effects.Other new straight-lined, elegant structures included a newinterpretation of elm: Baron Elm. Süddekor showed a largeportfolio of release paper structures, structured finish foils andembossed in register décors which demonstrated a masterfulinteraction between look and feel. The unveiling of the unique Colourscollection was the highlight ofSchattdecor's Pordenone showing.

The Colours collection has been designedin line with current trend themes to workwith the latest generation of woodgraindécors. The 18 solid colours were shownin the latest matte finish. Like the realsamples in the colour fans (produced topresent the harmonious collection), thekey solids are produced by using animproved printing process involvingstandardised base paper and printing inksin brilliant colours. The result is aneconomical product which is highlysuited for further processing.

Melamine and foil furniture décorsthat unite tactile and visual realism werethe main focus of Schattdecor's showingat Sicam 2012. In the Industrial Heritagetrend section, Canterbury Oak fascinatedcustomers with its register embossedmelamine finish, while the newly-developed Canyon Monument Oak, withits straight-grained texture and rough-hewn look in Smartfoil 3D proved to be apopular highlight. The new décor Tokaj,a contemporary woodgrain, harmonises

particularly well with the trend solids inthe unique Colours collection. Tokaj is afine-grained décor offering elongatedflame figures, partial rays and attractivecolour treatment. Darker streaksintroduce a touch of interest in thebalanced composition.

Loft, a faithful interpretation ofarchitectural concrete, was a further newdécor that met with an enthusiasticreception. The transverse variants ofArmagnac Elm and Imabari Oak for theItalian market, along with Omaha Cherry(shown in a high-gloss finish) and RovereGlamour, were also shown prominently.

Also on the stand at Sicam 2012 wasthe third edition of Schattdecor’sCaravan Collection, which includesmelamine and Postfoil décors. However, most stunning were the new additions tothe company's Digital Visions collection. One of the many impressive designs wasbroken glass, shown left. But don’t gettoo close. It’s sharp in every respect.

How apt that one of Britain’s mostforward thinking, revolutionaryand dynamic furniture manu-

facturers should share a name with anartform that has come to represent thevery pinnacle of artistic achievement.Sometimes classic, sometimes contem-porary, embracing simple lyricism andsophisticated counterpoint in its line, form and orchestration, the SymphonyGroup’s portfolio provides anunparalleled range of fitted furniturewhich, traversing its extremes, is bothinspirational and aspirational. And,though grounded on solid principles, like all truly great art forms, in equalmeasure there is talent and genius atwork behind its development.

Now in its 41st year, the multi-million pound Symphony Groupcontinues to increase its market sharewhile many of its competitors fight tomaintain ground in the fitted kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and, morerecently, hospitality markets whichSymphony is making its own. It’s donethis partly by focussing intently on theneeds of its core customer groups andproviding a range which coverseverything they could possibly require;partly by providing all-encompassinglevels of service which include deliveryand full installation; and partly byestablishing long-term partnershipswith suppliers and embracingautomotive industry manufacturingmethodology.

In the last five years, Symphony’skitchen designers have focussed on thedevelopment of ranges for five distinctmarket sectors: Kubix - the “kitchen forlife” - provides for the social housingmarket; Koncept is Symphony’s privatehousing brand; for merchants and mid-level high street retailers, Milanocontains plenty of options; Gallery isideal for the upper retail sector; and atthe top of the retail range, Signature isSymphony’s new premium brand.Across the range, gloss remains kingand painted fascias (finished in thecompany’s Rotherham plant) areovertaking woodgrains. Symphony’sbedroom offer includes Embrace, forthe independent retailer; Aspect forcare homes, student accommodationand hotels; and Revive, a hotel specificoffer. Aquadi is the new bathroomfurniture offer for independentretailers. Across the whole portfoliothere are 120 kitchen fascia options, 26more for the bathroom and a further18 for the bedroom.

For most companies, supplying andfitting kitchens to equip one third of allnew homes built in the UK every yearwould be headache enough. It’s notdifficult to imagine the fortissimodissonance and frequent cymbal crashesthat new market areas could add. YetSymphony’s factory, atop the formerGrimethorpe colliery, is an oasis of calm.A small army of workers shuttlesmeticulously labelled components from

The success and growth of Symphony Group over the last ten years hasbeen considerable. Close-knit partnerships with companies like Decorative Panels Components have played a significant role.

house-high racks to lines of red-shirtedassemblers. The eagle eyes of the blue-shirts - the quality control inspectors -miss nothing. At the end of eachassembly line, expert packers wrapcabinets and fill a fleet of awaitingtrucks. Squeezed between thecomponent racks at the other end ofthe line, a small Weeke sits idle. It’s oneof very few machines in the factory.

So what’s the secret?Marketing Director Simon Collyns

takes up the story: “When MartynDavis became Symphony’s MD in2000, he brought with him many ofthe processes used in the automotiveindustry. We made a conscious decisionto move away from manufacturing andinto assembly and logistics. We startedto look more closely at our suppliers -suppliers like Decorative Panels, whohad been trading with Symphony for30-40 years. They’d already provedthemselves as a trusted supplier, so weasked them to prepare a three-pointincremental growth plan todemonstrate, among other things, theycould provide the capacity we neededfor growth.”

“We looked at Symphony’s forecastsand married our investment to them,”continues Decorative Panels Group MD,Guy Metcalfe. “Our businesses havegrown together. We supply 100% of allSymphony’s carcases and many of theirfascias. We share forecasts andmanufacturing capacity information. There are no secrets between us.”

Adds Simon, “Our business dependson having this kind of partnership. Wehave a small number of partners and webuild those relationships carefully.Decorative Panels is a cornerstone; anabsolutely key, critical part of ourbusiness and our success.”

But all too frequently one hears ofbig companies pulling the plug onsmaller suppliers with catastrophicconsequences. Surely, it is a huge riskfor Decorative Panels. Guy Metcalfefreely admits he is not even slightlynervous. “I’ve never dealt with abusiness that is as loyal as Symphony,”he says. “We had to learn how tosupply their acccount and we were notwithout fault on occasion but Symp-hony’s attitude was always to worktogether to make things better. WhenMartyn Davis says he will do something,he will do it. Taking almost a millioncomponents a month, Symphony is ourbiggest account but we have no fearbecause we have an immense amountof faith in this partnership.”

It’s clear that, like the duets it singswith a small, elite band of suppliers -well-established brands like Hettich,Kesseböhmer and others - the poly-phony between Decorative Panels andSymphony is in perfect harmony. Andunder the capable baton of MartynDavis, the Symphony orchestra playsto audiences which grow with eachpassing year.Symphony Group: 01226 446000.Decorative Panels: 01484 658341.

S&I Manufacturing of Corby,Northamptonshire, has recentlyinstalled another two new

innovative Holz-Her machines - a Pro-Master 7223 CNC machining centreand a Cut 6120 Dynamic beam saw,linked to a Barbaric 14 stack positionCSF storage system.

With 60 working hours a weekaveraged over the last 10 years fromtheir existing Holz-Her CNC's andedgebanders - and excellent servicelevels from Weinig - it is no surprisethey turned once more to Holz-Her.

S&I Manufacturing is a specialistshopfitter. Its products include point ofsales displays, library and educationalfurniture and the company’s client listincludes major design houses, localauthorities and large retailers. Est-ablished 21 years ago, S&I has 20employees and operates from modernpremises in Corby. Personal, promptand flexible customer service is theirhallmark and all the staff is committedto delivering high quality, precisionproducts. To maintain standards, S&Ihas embarked upon a programme ofcontinuous investment in German

engineered panel processing mach-ines. It is seen as one way to achievecustomer satisfaction.

With the Holz-Her Pro-Master, forinstance, the new technology bristleswith innovative and unique features:higher processing rates, providing theability to respond more quickly tocustomer orders; extraordinaryprecision to guarantee product finish;concen-tration on practical require-ments for companies requiring a highdegree of flexible manufacturing of allshapes and sizes; and much more. ThePro-Master has a Vario table offeringfully automatic table positioning. TheVario head is a 5-axis automaticpositioning aggregate, uniquelycapable of automatic tool changing. These features return super fast, simplified setup and production.

The new Cut 6120 beam saw islinked to a Barbaric 14-pack CSFstorage system. The new CNC storagesystem has been a step-up in efficiency. As the panel leaves the beam saw, a barcode label is applied which is thenswiped by a corresponding bar codereader at the machine. Within seconds,

the machine will set itself and run theprogram automatically.

Greater efficiency and productivitygrowth is also achieved by the BarbaricCSF Chaotic Storage System integratedwithin the Holz-Her 6120 Dynamicbeam saw. All in-store and out-of-storepanels are managed and optimised, resulting in a three-fold increase in pro-ductivity, far easier and more accuratestock management and vastly improvedwaste optimisation of each panel. SaysMD, Ian Huggins, “Holz-Her's opti-misation software is the best I've used, ithas been a godsend and impactspositively to the whole productionprocess, saving money and increasingproductivity at the same time”.

Up to 65% of a panel cuttingprocess can be taken up by panelhandling. The advanced technologyBarbaric system removes this down-time. It is capable of reading thecomplete cutting job list and facilitatesthe loading of the beam saw in the mostproductive manner for maximumefficiency. Should the beam saw need tocut in book heights, the Barbaric willstack a book behind the pusher arm

whilst the beam saw is cutting. Once thebeam saw has completed its current job,the pusher arm will lift and collect theawaiting book. Whilst this is happening, the Barbaric will continue to optimise itsstorage area for the next job. As soonas the pusher arm has cleared theloading area it will start loading thenext job. In essence, the saw never hasto wait for panel loading, returning upto three times greater productivity.

Should the panel stock run low, theCSF system will send an email to advisemore panels need to be ordered. Evenwhen the factory is closed, the Barbaricwill analyse the job list and organisethe most efficient way for the followingday's production.

“The system has streamlined theoperation at S&I and made panelproduction much more efficient andprice competitive,” says Ian Huggins.“And the Weinig brand name hashelped massively to increase continuedconfidence in our investment, guarantee a prompt after-sales service, provide technical solutions, anddecrease downtime”.

Perfect for start-upcompanies, it offers many advantages, including cutting and radius of the edgebanding with a two-motor end cuttingunit for high quality finishing of panels. It even copes with thick solid woodlippings, and offers a straight cut orchamfering with thin edge bandings. The superior finish of the edge is theresult of the Megaline feed belt (anSCM patent) which allows the panel tofeed without fear of the pulse generatedby the pinion of a traditional feed track. The RT-V panel edge trimming groupprovides a perfect, imperfection-freeedge joint line with the surface andcaters for up to 3mm thickness. The RKtrimming group allows simplemachining changeover from thin edgesto thick edges and solid wood lippings.Clear and concise graphics from theOrion One Plus control unit make theoperation of the K230 machine anddiagnosis of malfunctions simple.

The new SCM Sandya 300 wide beltsander is ideal for small and medium-size woodworking, door and panel

companies. It makes light of solid woodand panel calibrating and veneeredpanel sanding operations. It is availablein 950 or 1100mm working widths andoffers a working thickness of 4-170mm.The availability of an electronic sectional

pad on the model with 1100mmworking width enables the Sandya 300to sand honey-comb veneered panelswith ease. Advantages includepneumatic cylinders for the positioningof the units together with the electronicpositioning of the working thickness foreasy and very fast work changeover. The CS combined group is the secret ofthe Sandya 300's flexibility, facilitatingthe use of roller and pad eithersimultaneously or independently. Asectional pad with extractable screwedgraphite cloth makes for easy, fastchangeover and cleaning.

No workshop would be completewithout a spindle moulder. SCMsupply the widest range of spindlemoulders offering the market reducedset-up times, enhanced safety andremarkable ease-of-use. For example,SCM's exclusive model TI 155 Class, inmanual or electronic version, has atilting (+/-45º) electrospindle, bringingCNC machining centre technology tothe smaller workshop. A spindle speedof 900-12,000rpm and a 7.5kWelectrospindle, a FAST sectionalworktable and FLEX fence make the TI155 a joy to use.

Fully refurbished andguaranteed for six

months, used Striebigsaws are a great buy.

Right: The latest Striebig Compact

on show at W12.

Below: A fine example of a bespoke

kitchen created by Clayton Cabinets.

For small business owners, keeping atight rein on cash flow is crucial, sothe financial benefits of buying a

used rather than a new machine can berewarding. This was certainly the casewith bespoke kitchen and furnituremanufacturer, Clayton Cabinets.

When an elderly beam saw that hadbecome increasingly inaccurate andtook up a great deal of space needed tobe replaced, owner Nick Claytondecided to switch to a vertical panelmachine. After reading a review of aStriebig machine, he decided to callTM Machinery Services, the UK agent.“They said that because of their longworking life, used Striebig machinesdid not come on the market every day,but kept my details,” reports Nick.“Three months later they called to saythey had a four-year-old Compactmachine that had just been traded in.”

After being thoroughly overhauledby TM engineers, the Compact 4164was delivered and installed. Due to thelow doorway in the barn where thesaw was to be housed, TM made aspecial frame so that the machinecould be brought into the building.

Said TM Machinery director MattPearce, “We only supply second-hand

Striebig machines that we are sure willgive many more years of reliable service. All machines undergo a comprehensiverefurbishment with older machinesbeing completely stripped down sothat all bearings and other parts subjectto wear can be replaced. Our confi-dence in our refurbished machinery isbacked up by a six-month parts andlabour warranty.”

The saw was supplied with anoptional scoring blade for sizingveneered and melamine panels and a400mm strip cutting gauge, perfect forintricate work which requires 100 x100mm pieces.

Nick is effusive in his praise of thesaw. “It's easy to use, cuts dead straightand square every time, even on smallcomponents. The scales are easy toread and it's very versatile. It has alsogiven us a lot of extra space forassembly work.”

Striebig's Compact 4164 is one ofnine models in the series with a cuttingrange from 3100 x 1644mm up to 5350x 2200mm. An automatic feed series, the Compact AV, is also available. Theycan be wall-mounted or freestanding.

The revolutionary Cojet 2612industrial inkjet printer made itsUK exhibition debut on the RW

Machines stand at this year's W12.Enabling high definition flatbed printingof anything from woodgrains to colourphoto images or complex graphicartworks onto a wide range of flat 8 x4ft panels, the Cojet will also printbatches or random smaller panelcomponents - like cabinet doors, forexample. Cojet not only prints with inksthat are warranted UV stable for eightyears, it can even add texture to theprinted surface.

The generously proportioned table(2600 x 1200mm printable area) takesindividual workpieces up to 500 kilos inweight and Cojet 2612 will also print

several different designs bi-directionallyat a single pass and with a printdefinition of 720dpi. For comparison, the images on this page were printed at300dpi using a coarser screen.

A new 1440dpi ultra high speedprinting option was also launched atthe last Atlanta exhibition.

The inkjet heads will return tooverprint an image up to eight times, building a surface with real depth andcovering around 20 square metres perhour in normal production mode. Theresulting image of a natural woodgrain-like oak, or other deep-pored timbers, isconvincing to both eye and touch. Andin addition to wood-based panels, Cojetwill print onto almost any othermaterial - metal, ceramics, glass, foam

Textured print that looks and feels like woodgrain and heads thatprint right into routed panels are just two of the features of RW’s

Cojet industrial inkjet printer.

boards, acrylics and even concrete, making it a very useful tool formanufacturers who cater for thedisplay and shopfitting sectors.

A well-engineered UV lamp systemto both sides of the print head meansinks cure almost immediately, makingthe Cojet a seriously productivemachine for any manufacturer requiringjust-in-time, custom-designed décors. The table of the machine will handlematerials of up to 100mm in thicknessand will even print down into routedpatterns, such as on MDF door blanks.Powerful multi-zoom vacuum clampswill secure even very heavy or unevenmedia for a top quality printed result.

Automatic adjustment accom-odatesmaterials of varying or uneven thicknessand quick-drying inks help to raiseproductivity. Twin motors and a sync-ronous servo make for high precisionprinting on a flat-bed table using sixcolour print delivery with two additionalcolours also optionally available.

Inks are stored for use on themachine in individual plastic containers

in pull-out drawer-trays under the worktable from where they are delivered tothe print heads individually by suction. The curable inks are pre-packaged toavoid any need for manual pouring andall are non-volatile, environment-friendly organic compounds.

Automatic pop-up pins on themachine bed enable simple repeatpositioning of even irregularly shapedworkpieces for top quality print in thecustom interiors arena and also for usein the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom andshopfitting sectors. Output is limitedonly by the imagination. High resolutionimaging coupled with high speed, sixcolour printing puts Cojet firmly into the'wise investment' category, says DavidThompson-Rowland.

Cojet is available at RW Machinesin Bicester whose highly regardedteam of service engineers will be fullysupporting Cojet for service, sparesand inks.

For more details, or to arrange ademonstration on your own materials, call 01869 244943.

Above and below: Multiple passes enable the Cojetto build texture into print with surfaces which mimic

woodgrain, stone, or whatever is required.

Right: Photo-realistic quality is a feature of the Cojet -but it’s just as comfortable printing company logos on

the panels of furniture for corporate reception areas.

TheAXYZ 8010

large-formatrouter will complement

and extend the productioncapabilities of the AXYZ 4010 and 6010 machines already installed at CNC

Routing Ltd in the West Midlands. The purpose-built 8010 router is at the topend of the customised machines from AXYZ, with a 2635mm width and up to15m length. The 8000 series has been designed to handle difficult or Jumbo-

sized panels not previously achievable with other smaller routing solutions. AllAXYZ routers can process materials from plywood and composite woods to

acrylics and come with the latest A2MC machine control system and the AXYZVision System as standard but the AXYZ 8010 at CNC Routing has a few

additional production enhancements. There are two carriages on the gantry, servo motors, the latest helical rack and pinion drive system to spread the workload and reduce machine wear and an expanded 21-station ATC facility. CNCRouting, who offer in-house design, manufacturing, assembly as well as edge

banding and spraying, are so impressed they are planning to purchase another8010 machine in 2013.

Chris and Gill Heleine at Manzana Contracts are using their wood waste to stay warm this winter -making sense for both the environment and their bank balance. Manzana Contracts providesmanufacturing services for the leisure, commercial and elite domestic market from their workshop inHuddersfield. Instead of using expensive gas heaters and sending wood to landfill, two WT15 woodwaste heaters were supplied and installed by Wood Waste Technology’s specialist team. KurtCockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology, said: “By doing the business calculations in advance, they’ve been able to save a substantial amount of money on skip bills and heating costs, and they’llget a good return from their investment.”

Wood Waste Technology offer a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units tolarge fully automatic systems. Design, installation and on-going maintenance and servicing are alsoon offer. German shredders and briquetters are available from their partner organisation Gross UK.01785 250400www.woodwastetechnology.comwww.grossuk.co.uk

Jeff Green at Integral Surface Designs Ltd in Skelmersdale,Lancashire, knew from the start that the new facility shouldincorporate a Waste-to-Energy system - and his pastexperience in the woodworking industry led him to DustControl Systems and Ranheat Engineering. Integral SurfaceDesigns specialise in manufacturing acrylic, vinyl-wrappedand MFC pvc-edged doors using CNC-technology nestingmachines, and generating plenty of MDF waste that could beused to heat the workshops. DCS engineers devised a filtersystem to work in connection with Ranheat Engineering’s300kW heating system. The modular filter and hopper sit directly above the Ranheat 50m3 silo, which meansonly one main fan is needed for the whole system - a considerable cost saving. The filter is fitted with tubularSuperbag polyester filter media and can handle an airflow capacity of 23,000m3/hr. As well as all the ductingruns, DCS also supplied a wood waste Schuko shredder and a Dry Back Spray Booth.
