Flipping with CanvasBy: Marie Webb
1. What do you know about flipping?2. How can you use a LMS to Flip your classroom?
Definition of a “Flipped” Classroom
● An inverse classroom● An upside-down classroom● All homework is done in class; all
classwork is done at home● Does NOT require use of online
component but is very helpful (especially for S- motivation & T- assessment).
Benefits of FlippingA flipped class allows:● more time for student engagement with
materials● teacher to answer more questions● online materials and videos to be
accessed 24/7● more individualized instruction
Drawbacks of Flipping
● More preparation time for the teacher (creating videos, screencasts, online discussions)
● Students have an initial adjustment period (about 7 weeks)
● Technical problems are common● Students must be trained to use new technology
*There are always students who are strongly adverse to CHANGE! Don’t let this deter you!
Considerations When Flipping
1. Don’t use technology for technology’s sake.
2. Take one step at time when flipping. Consider how students respond and adjust lessons accordingly.
3. Don’t flip everything! Select modules that are more conducive to flipping!
4. Expect an adjustment phase for you and the students!
Technologies for Flipping● *Screencasting● Google Docs● Voicethread● Padcams (with videorecorders) ● Guided internet searches● Video cameras/cell phones● Many more apps like: Show Me!
Example of a Flipped Writing Lecture
Today’s Focus: Canvas tools
● Online Discussion Threads● Vocabulary training with the Quizlet external tool● Wiki Pages for class projects/presentations● Online Quizzes● Announcements- Homework reminders● Role Call Attendance● EVERYTHING IS LINKED WITH THE GRADEBOOK!
Alternative to Voicethread: Canvas Media Discussions
Vocabulary Skills with Quizlet
Online Quizzes
Giving Student Feedback via Canvas or Turn-it in External Tool
You “canflip” with any course! You don’t have to make videos!
Student Excuses? Teacher, I don’t know how to work the technology!
Canvas is better! Any Questions?
• Canvas is compatible through many mobile and smart devices such as Droid, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
• It also supports social learning services such as Google Docs, Skype, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Delicious and Diigo.
