CRYSTAL LAKE – GwenTaylor knows the day comesonce every two years, but itnever gets easier for her whenit finally arrives.

After spend-ing two yearssharing walksdown the hall-ways, experi-encing academ-ic and socialstruggles andachievementsand learning alittle more each day about eachother and perspectives on life,it is always tough for Taylor tosay goodbye to her student.

Taylor, an inclusion aideat Marlowe Middle School, isone of roughly 125 parapro-fessionals in Huntley SchoolDistrict 158 dedicated to help-ing special-needs students ona one-on-one basis.

For two years, the aide helpswith whatever is necessary, from talking with teachers tobridging communication gapsto helping organize a locker.

“It’s always hard, but youjust have to trust you’ve doneyour job well,” Taylor said of

saying goodbye to each studentshe helps. “It’s been so fulfill-ing for me. I absolutely love it.It even inspired my daughterto pursue a college degree as aspecial education teacher.”

Karen Alyward, director ofspecial education for District158, said inclusion aides havebecome vital to the programover the years. By law, therecan be no more than eight spe-cial-needs students per teach-er in a classroom, but Alywardsaid the district works to keepthe ratio much lower to makesure individual students getthe attention they need.

The aides can be especial-ly helpful when it comes tohelping the students integratewith the general educationstudents and other teachersin courses such as physicaleducation, art and music.

“In the real world, thesestudents are going to have tointeract with all different typesof people,” Alyward said. “Butthat’s also why it is importantwe transition from one aide toanother every two years or so.”

The bond between aide andstudent is one reason SharonPeckham decided to transi-tion to that role. Peckham, who served as a paraprofes-

sional in a re-cess and lunchs u p e r v i s o rrole, decided totake the inclu-sion aide certi-fication coursea t M c H e n r yCounty Collegeand has workedin that capacityfor the past seven years.

Peckham said each stu-dent she has served duringher time has had differentneeds and formed differentrelationships with her, but itis a much closer bond thanthose experienced when shesupervised dozens of studentsat one time.

“It’s a unique relationshipfor sure,” she said. “They all re-spond differently and there arealways challenges, but the re-wards definitely outweigh thestruggles. I just love the kids.”

Despite employing roughly125 inclusion aides in the dis-trict, Alyward said it is oftena thankless and overlookedposition as many people donot even know about the workof the aides.

“They are a huge piece ofthe large puzzle that is educa-tion,” Alyward said.

WOODSTOCK – With littlefanfare and no discussion, theMcHenry County Board choseits next representative on theRegional Transportation Au-thority Board.

County Board membersvoted Tuesday morning, 22-0, to appoint Lakewood busi-nessman Blake Hobson to thepost effective Jan. 1. He willreplace longtime GOP insiderAl Jourdan, whose five-yearterm expired in April but hascontinued to serve until a re-placement was named.

Hobson, who served onthe County Board, Lakewood

Village and Nunda Town-ship boards, co-owns Hunt-ley-based manufacturingcompany Image Industries. Hebeat out nine other applicantsfor the $25,000-a-year job.

The 16-member RTA Boardhas financial oversight of thethree Chicago mass-transitboards of Metra, Pace and theChicago Transit Authority.

Jourdan was appointed asthe county’s RTA representa-tive in 2008. He spent 30 yearsas McHenry County Republi-can Party chairman between1968 and 1998, and about threeof those years as state chair-man.

Jourdan’s RTA term expiredin April, but the appointmentprocess has been delayed twicebecause of political turmoil atthe mass-transit agencies.

Chicago’s mass-transit

agencies have come under se-rious scrutiny in recent years, primarily over controversyand allegations of corruptionand mismanagement at Me-tra, but also because of res-ignations at the RTA Boardand whether it was negligentin its handling of the most re-cent Metra scandal involvingthe resignation of its previ-

ous chief executive. The CTAhas come under fire over thenumerous glitches that haveplagued the rollout of the newVentra fare card system.

The County Board nextyear also will have to find anew representative for the Me-tra Board – current represen-tative Jack Schaffer said hewill not seek reappointment toanother four-year term.

Hobson’s appointment wasone of nine made Tuesday tofive boards and commissions.County Board members alsoappointed newcomer DianeWasilk and incumbent Con-nee Meschini to the McHenryCounty Mental Health Board, which has undergone signif-icant change in the wake ofa County Board committeeshakeup and ongoing fiscalwoes.

Husky fromMarengo to become NIUmascotBy JIM DALLKE

[email protected]

MARENGO – Northern Il-linois University has turnedto a Marengo dog breederto find a re-p l a c e m e n tfor Diesel ,the soon-to-beretired Sibe-rian huskymascot whohas roamedthe NIU side-lines for the past nine years.

NIU is retiring Diesel atthe end of the 2013 seasonto make way for Mission,a 2-year-old Siberian hus-ky from Aliak Kennels inMarengo.

“I think Mission is an

excellent fit for NIU,” saidKaren Street, owner ofAliak Kennels. “He’s theperfect example of an ath-lete. He’s certainly got theenergy to keep up with allfour quarters of the game.”

But Mission hasn’t al-ways exhibited the ath-leticism he shows today.Mission was purchasedfrom Aliak Kennels as apuppy and it was later re-alized that his rear legs

were growing inward. Dis-pleased with the look of thedog, the owner returnedMission back to Street.

After Street switchedMission’s food and sent himto physical therapy, Mis-sion outgrew his leg issueand became the healthy, strapping dog seen today.

At first, overlooked forhis perceived faults buteventually recognized forhis accomplishments, Mis-

sion is the perfect repre-sentative of the NIU foot-ball team, Street said.

“He’s a stunning dog,”she said. “The importantthing is that he representsthe athletes. He’s willing towork and loves to learn.”

Mission was given toNIU by alumni John andCassandra McKearn, whodonated the money to NIU,which in turn will reim-burse Aliak Kennels. Street

did not know the agreedupon figure but said showdogs like Mission – if hewasn’t neutered – rangefrom $1,200 to $1,800.

Mission will still live inMarengo when he’s not onduty for football games orother campus events. NIUArmy ROTC students willbe Mission’s handlers whenhe is in DeKalb.

“They plan on using himquite a bit,” Street said. “Heloves the college-age group. He adores that age. He’s go-ing to have a lot of fun withthem.”

Mission is the secondconsecutive NIU mascot tohail from McHenry County.Diesel, the retiring mascot,is from Harvard.

“He’s the perfect example of an athlete. He’s certainly got the energyto keep up with all four quarters of the game.”

Two-year-old Mission, a Siberian husky, plays Dec. 5 with his handler Karen Street at Aliak Kennels in Marengo. Mission was given to NIU by alumni and will take overas Northern Illinois’ mascot when their current mascot Diesel retires at the end of the 2013 season.

Pet Vet Animal Clinic takes in 22 cats

By JIM [email protected]

HUNTLEY – The Pet Vet Ani-mal Clinic in Huntley is purringa little louder this week.

A lot louder, actually. On Dec. 2, Pet Vet brought in

22 cats that belonged to an elderlyUnion woman who was no longerable to take care of them becauseof her deteriorating health. Thecats range in age from young-er than a year to 22 years old,and most are in average to poorhealth, according to Cindy Gaff-ney, president of Animal Servicesand Assistance Programs.

Gaffney, who helped connectthe cats’ owner with Pet Vet, said

the cats will be given health ex-ams and are available for adop-tion or short-term foster. Gaffneyalso expects to find at least fivemore cats in the house.

“[The owner’s] health condi-tions prevented her from proper-ly taking care of the cats,” Gaff-ney said. “She was overwhelmed. She was by herself and with herhealth issues, it became a healthissue for the cats.”

Most of the cats are in need ofsome type of medical care rangingfrom blood work to a cat that mayhave a broken jaw, Gaffney said. But most appear to have a kindtemperament and are relaxingat the veterinary clinic, Gaffneysaid. ASAP is covering the costs

of the cats’ veterinary bills andboarding fees and is supplying allthe food and litter.

The cats’ owner, Kim Dalleska,61, said it was bittersweet to haveto say goodbye to the cats, but sheknew this would be the best deci-sion for her feline friends.

“I’m really sad about it. I’m go-ing to miss them,” said Dalleska,

who has been hospitalized withpneumonia and blood clots. “[Gaff-ney] offered to take care of them, and I was really happy about that.I know it’s the best for them.”

Dalleska said her kitten collec-tion began when she took in a fewstrays more than 20 years ago.

“They were my babies,” shesaid. They’re all close to me intheir own special way.”

Pet Vet practice manager Kar-en Larsen said the cats are rest-ing in the back of the animal hos-pital, and she’s been enjoying theextra purring around the clinic.

“It’s kind of a rewardingsound,” Larsen said. “It meansthey feel comfortable in here. Theyare going to get a good home.”
