FMS Fire and Security Ltd. have worked withMount Stuart on installing an EMS System5000 radio fire alarm system.

Consisting of three networked control panelsand approximately 450 alarm devices installedthroughout the main and outbuildings. Theentire fire alarm system has been integratedwith the current access control and intruderalarm systems.

On the 3rd floor there are rooms where FMSFire and Security have installed VESDA (VeryEarly Smoke Detection Apparatus) points toallow for rapid detection of fire with the addedbenefit of discreet appearance.

The system has Redcare fire alarm signallingwhich is connected to an ARC (AlarmReceiving Centre) via a BT phone line. If thealarm is triggered, through accident or arson,

the ARC is alertedwithin seconds andcan summon theemergency servicesas required.FMS Fire and Securityinstalled the system in 2005 and have worked withMount Stuart ever since.

Maintenance of the fixed gas extinguishing systemthat protects the historical documents and records ofthe family has also been taken over by FMS Fireand Security.

FMS Fire and Security completed this prestigious jobon time and within budget dealing with all thecomplexities a listed building like Mount Stuartcan present.

introducing the new analogueaddressable system while keepingthem both operating withoutreducing the fire cover proved achallenge, but one which wassuccessfully managed by bothparties. The installation took abouteight weeks and instant benefit wasestablished for the Sheratonmanagement with unwanted alarmactivations drastically reduced toalmost nil.

There were no recorded guestcomplaints during the entireexercise, a testimony to thededication of customer satisfactionshared and borne by both theSheraton Grand and FMS Fireand Security.

From 2000 to 2002, theconstruction of the award-winningOne Spa took place; again, FMSFire and Security were invited toassist with the design, installationand full integration of the new six-storey building with the existinghotel fire systems. This added afurther three control panels andsome 500 plus Apollo field devicesto the system network.

The ongoing investment by theSheraton Grand has recently seentwo internal refurbishmentprograms; firstly the bedroom levelsand secondly the ground and firstfloor public and back ofhouse/administration areas. At thistime the Sheraton Grand invested inthe latest technology in fire alarmequipment available from FMS andApollo Fire detectors with whomFMS Fire and Security have had anexcellent relationship for over 20years. Sheraton GrandHotel & Spa

The Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spais one of the most prestigious andluxurious 5 star hotels in Scotland, located on Lothian Road with viewsof the iconic Edinburgh Castle.

When the hotel was constructed in1985 addressable fire alarmsystems were still on the drawingboard. The technology availablethen was not as intelligent as ourmodern day analogue addressableproduct line. It was functional butunable to identify anything smallerthan a section of the buildingallocated into a physical fire zone, sometimes incorporating as manyas 20 or 30 rooms. This presentedthe hotel management with a timeconsuming exercise to determinethe exact location of a fire or faultevent alerted to them by the firealarm control panel.

The maintenance of the system wasawarded to FMS Fire and Security in1993 and along with the trust thatwas built up between FMS and theclient, came the inevitable decisionto provide the hotel with a state ofthe art fire detection and alarmsystem. Jointly, the two parties puttogether a plan of actionincorporating the design, installation and indeed the logisticsof how to provide the new systemwithout any closure of rooms orfacilities to the guests. A majorundertaking indeed, but such wasthe knowledge of how our clientoperated and the comfort of ourclient knowing how FMS operated, that the proposal was given thegreen light by the management andthe building owners.

A phased installation including a fullrewiring exercise was undertaken.Maintaining the existing system,

fire detection which of courseApollo Fire Detectors are theleading light. The Discovery rangeof multi-sensors and the all newDiscovery sounder beacon baseswere used throughout the bedroomlevels and upper floor public areasoffering even greater systemflexibility and reliability.

FMS are now maintaining andmanaging, along with the fire alarmsystem, the CCTV, Access Controland Intruder alarm systemsthroughout the Hotel and One Spaand enjoy an excellent workingrelationship with all the staff andmanagement of the Sheraton GrandHotel & Spa.
