Acupuncture is an ancient, well-triedand tested form of health care. It helpsbalance the energy systems of the bodyto restore and maintain good health. It can be used to treat a wide range of

Coping with Hay Fevercoming in from outside. At home, vacuumregularly and dustusing a damp cloth tominimise pollen indoors.

There are two maintypes of medicationfor hayfever – antihistamine medication and steroidnasal sprays. Both are available from the pharmacyor supermarket. Antihistamines work on the sameday, although last no longer than a day. Some causedrowsiness. Steroid nasal sprays are slow to work (daysor even weeks), and must be taken regularly to beeffective, but are useful if antihistamines are ineffectiveor cannot be taken. Alternative therapy includes theregular consumption of local honey. Sadly the sciencetells us that this is ineffective, but it’s rather nice on toastanyway!

For further information go to: www.nhs.uk/conditions/hayfever/pages/introductions.aspx

A long with the warmer weather, hayfever season is now wellunderway, with up to a quarter ofus suffering from stuffy noses anditchy eyes due to pollen allergy

(myself included). If you can’t get your symptomscontrolled, see your doctor or practice nurse, but thereare plenty of things you can try yourself. The majority ofpeople are allergic to grass pollen, others to tree pollen- a rare disadvantage of living in such a picturesquerural area as South Northamptonshire.

When pollen counts are high, stay indoorsand keep doors and windows shut

Pollen avoidance is the simplest option. When pollencounts are high, stay indoors and keep doors andwindows shut, including the car. Wear wrap-aroundsunglasses outside to reduce pollen getting into youreyes. Avoid cutting grass or grassy areas. Pollen sticksto clothes so have a shower and change clothes when

Paleolithic cave dwellers mixed claypigments with water, spit and urine tocreate the first paint. Pigments today arestill mixed with a liquid binder. Of course, these days most of us slap the stuff on in

a uniform coat rather than hand-draw animals on wallsof our dwellings.

Also called Kaolin Aluminum Silicate, this clay mineralwas the “kao” in antidiarrheal Kaopectate until1989. The pigment and thickener clings to Uraniumcompounds, so Kaolin-containing products — likeglossy magazines — can be slightly radioactive.

Quartz sand. It’s used in paint to increase the volume, sand being cheaper than practically every otheringredient except water and as a flattening agent,

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)is one of the most common pigments for anythingwhite, from paint and paper to skywriting smoke. Small(TiO2) particles reflect nearly all wavelengths of lightequally efficiently, causing it to appear white. Did your terracotta pots go 10 rounds with thefrosts this winter and come off second best?Perhaps now is a good time to considerreplacing them as many manufacturers nowproduce stylish, multi material, good looking

“frost withstanding” garden pots.

Unglazed porous clay pots are plant friendly, but areheavy. Unglazed terracotta absorbs the water from theplanting compost so watering will need to be morefrequent and as many of us have found out will crack infrosty weather. Metal pots (Zinc & Titanium) are popular –good looking in contemporary settings but can damagethe plants roots due to the heating up of the pot when inthe sun.

Natural wooden pots (hard or softwood) is widelyavailable and blend in well with plant material – notaffected by the frosts, light and relatively inexpensive.

Tip: Treat the pot with a good wood preservative and linewith a thick plastic sheet to reduce rotting of the wood.

Plastic! Not as bad as you think, light, cheap and with acouple of coats of a good metallic paint can really give acontemporary feel, good drainage can be achieved easilyby making additional holes.

Others include faux Aluminium, fibreglass and resin, mostare lightweight, low maintenance and frost proof. Don’t feelbad about replacing the old ones there are plenty out thereto choose from.

was always intended to be alimited sum of money to kick startthe industry and raise awarenessof energy efficiency. The schemehas been very popular andall the money available under thescheme has now been allocated. Some companies still continue to offerreductions on new boiler installations.

Heard about this one from the TheGlass & Glazing Federation (GGF)?They have petitioned the governmentto introduce a National Window ScrappageScheme. Householders will be encouraged to scraptheir old poorly insulated windows in return for a£1,000 grant towards the installation costs of new, professionally installed, energy efficient ones!

Perhaps you might wish to think of some newscrappage schemes! Fridges, Freezers, Cookers, Tv’sHusband, Wife or on a really bad day…the Kids!

So at last we have reached the end ofthe official government Car ScrappageScheme where up to 400,000 new carshave been sold. Scrappage accounted fora fifth of cars sold after the scheme wasa fifth of cars sold after the scheme was
