In 1851, guild-certified master millwright, Carl Hilmar Guenther,

established his first flourmill in southern Texas. Supplying some

of America’s first foodservice establishments with top-grade

At C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc., we still operate from our historic site

in San Antonio, Texas, along the banks of the San Antonio River.

We have nine plants allowing for national distribution of our many

grain-based products to all corners of the country.

1848 Twenty-two-year-old Carl Hilmar Guenther emigrates from Wiessenfels, Germany to America.

1859 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. leaves Fredericksburg for San Antonio with a continued commitment to providing the kitchens of its communities with the highest quality flour.

1851 A short 15 years after the fall of the Alamo and the successful fight for Texas independence, C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. began as a family-owned and -operated business in Fredericksburg, Texas.

1877 In response to the rapid growth following the arrival of the railroad in San Antonio in 1877, Carl Hilmar Guenther replaced his 1859 mill with this larger, three-story building on the same site. Replacement of the old waterwheel with water-powered turbines also increased productivity.

1925 Pioneer’s state-of-the-art milling process included roller machines that broke open the kernels, sending wheat flour on through purifiers and sifters to the packing assembly line–all powered by electric motors–before being stored for rail shipment.

1972 White Wings Flour Tortilla Mix is launched and becomes a top-selling product.

1868 Needing to increase production but lacking sufficient water power at his original location, Guenther built a second mill and it became the primary retail sales and distribution point for flour and cornmeal.

1899 C.H. Guenther, just incorporated, reorganized its product line with names for twelve new brands. The two flours receiving the heaviest promotion were Pioneer, featuring the likeness of the company’s founder, and White Wings, named for the region’s white-wing doves. These designs were used on the brands’ barrelheads until wooden barrels were discontinued about 1920.

1916 Pioneer’s delivery fleet, which once consisted of only two mule-drawn wagons, was expanded to include new motorized vehicles, which could transport the mill’s products farther and faster.

By the time of World War I, wooden flour barrels were fully replaced by smaller and more easily handled cloth sacks.

As World War I brought strict rationing of wheat, Pioneer produced Cornserve Flour, shown advertised at left on one of the company’s new Packard trucks.

1967 Both the old home that once housed Pioneer’s first test kitchen and the small 1920’s office building behind it were replaced with a two-story administrative building and warehouse that connected directly with the main mill building.

2002 Pioneer Frozen Foods was established in Prosperity, South Carolina.

2006 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires Morrison Milling Company, a long-time producer of grain-based foods.

1987 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires Texas Custom Bakers, in Duncanville, Texas, later renamed Pioneer Frozen Foods.

2001 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. celebrates its 150-year anniversary.

2008 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires Williams Foods, a dry-seasoning-mix producer, effectively extending its market area throughout the south central U.S.

2010 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires Trousdale Bakery, a bun plant in the U.K.

2013 C. H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires Golden West Baking Company, Gizella Pastry, and Les Boulangeries René, effectively increasing its distribution to Canada.

1999 Pioneer Flour Mills is reestablished as C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc., the legal designation since 1899.

2012 Pizza Blend’s acquisition strengthens Guenther’s custom-flour-blending capabilities.
