ADVANCE NOTICE OF SPEAKER: Associate Professor Dr. Tony Merriman of Otago University will give a health talk at St. Alban’s Anglican Church on 19 September 2014 at 7-30pm. He will speak on “Your Genes, Your Environment and Diseases”. Tony is a leading researcher of genes, working in the field of gout, arthritis and associated health problems.
ST JOHN NEWS: During the month of July we had 12 call outs in total. Two of these were Trauma and 10 were Medical. We travelled 957 kilometres during these calls. We have begun a new round of Continuing Clinical Education which is a focus on important aspects of the job as organised by our National Office. Our Volunteer for the month of July is: Donna Coleman-Smith. Donna not only mans the ambulance but also organises our weekly roster and fortnightly training. This Volunteer of the Month was sponsored by the Valley Cafe.
KUROW MEDICAL HEALTH NOTE: Women’s Health is hot on the agenda of the Kurow Medical Team over the next month or two, so we would like to encourage all the ladies out there to pop in and see us if you are due for any women’s health related issues. There are several offers available for some free and subsidised visits for some, so make sure you ask when you are in. 03 4360 760
SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO AT THE KUROW MUSEUM: Burns Pollack’s take on the old bridges, supported by a delightful book of images from the exhibit and quirky sketches which will be on sale.
COME ON WAITAKI VALLEY: Make sure you turn up for the presentation by Mike King at the Kurow Memorial Hall on Thursday 11th September. Mental Health matters and at some stage we are all affected by it– either personally or via someone we care about. This is a special event and I really want the Hall filled. Get a carload together. No baking promised but there will be a cuppa and time for a chat afterwards. Ring Carron at the Info Centre 4360 950 or 027 282 0615 if you want more information.
SATURDAY NIGHT ENTERTAINMENT: The evening at Otematata proved to be laughter filled. From flour to buckets of water it was all hilarious physical theatre. Just ask Denise Cochrane or Colleen Hughes about how up and close the actors were! Kurow were privileged to have the team from Bacchanals perform a moving and at times funny account of the birth of Social Security. By all accounts the historical facts were correct and the actors were skilled and approachable.

Third Sunday of the Month @ 3:00pm
Children Ditch School for Paddocks The children of the Upper Waitaki Valley ditched school for the day for a run in
paddocks at Omarama a couple of weeks ago.
On Monday the 18th
of August Upper Waitaki Valley school children travelled to
Omarama Saleyards to compete in the area cross country. Mt Cook, Omarama,
Twizel, Waitaki Valley and Duntroon schools were represented.
The children arrived and nervously found their teachers to get their name tags
before lining up in age groups. There was a bit of foot-tripping and shoving at the
start before the hills slowed everyone down. Everyone had a go and did their
best. Some people liked it but others were happy to get to the finish line for a
drink and ‘fainting’ on the ground.
Some legs were sore and clicky and there was lots of puffing and huffing and
bright red faces coming in to the chute at the finish line. Charlee Charles, a year 3
girl from Waitaki Valley School won her race. She told us “I felt like my legs were
almost going to give up.” She is so proud of herself.
Georgia Bell, winner of the 6-year-old girls, said “I felt proud of myself when I
won and I tried my hardest but I think the track should be harder.” Everybody
was proud they finished with no injuries.
The runners were cheered on and the parents were shouting their heads off.
Waitaki Valley School did well with 24 placings, and many of these children got to
represent the Valley at the North Otago cross country competition in Oamaru last
week.

WAITAKI DISTRICT NEWS: Duntroon
The Duntroon & District Development Association Inc often consults the local community over
issues that that affect it. In the past public meetings focussed on such issues as local Speed Limits,
development of the Duntroon Wetlands and Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
This year the Association is calling a public meeting to report back to the community on
development over recent years and to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the village and
surrounding district. From here the focus will be to look at what are the area’s needs and try to
identify opportunities for business growth.
“Over recent years, the focus has been to look at preserving our valuable local heritage and striving
to promote and share it with locals and visitors alike” says Mike Gray, secretary for the DDDA. “Our
committee has worked very hard over the years, meeting monthly and always having one or two
projects under way each year.”
“We have a ‘hands on’ approach, as is evident by the fact that our committee volunteers clean the
local public toilets and maintain and manage our Domain Camping Ground. These activities are
important as our main way of raising funds at a local level. From here we seek funding assistance
from a variety of regional and national sources.”
Owen King is chairman of the DDDA and is passionate about our wetland development. “We have
recently completed the construction of two boardwalks and currently, with the assistance of
Meridian Energy’s Waitaki Community Fund, we are about to gravel many parts of the tracks that
are susceptible to flooding”. He is grateful to the support of locals who turn out for regular working
bees at the wetland.
“But despite our efforts, we have a few issues that are hindering the growth of tourism in the area”
says Mike, “and one is a lack of sufficient accommodation in the village and the lack of a
convenience store. It is really sad to see riders on the A2O Cycle trail being bussed into Oamaru for
the night then bussed back the next day to complete their journey.”
“Such issues are beyond the means of our local Association to solve” says Owen.” Hence we are
calling a public meeting to see just what ideas are out there and who might be able to help us solve
some of these challenges.”
The public meeting will held in the Duntroon Hall at 7pm on September 18th
. It is hoped that
anyone who has a ‘can do ‘ attitude and who is interested in seeing Duntroon thrive will attend.
Waitaki District Council and Tourism Waitaki will be represented, as they recognise the importance
of our village as part of the “unique Waitaki tourist experience that our district has to offer”.
Kurow Smallbore Rifle Club 2014
The club’s end of season prizegiving was held on Wednesday the 27th
of August.
The night was the culmination of a very successful season comprising fifteen
evenings of shooting over recent months. This year saw a good group of junior
shooters and a few adults honing their shooting skills, next year it would be great
to see more adults giving the sport a go as well. The club would like to thank all
those that have assisted throughout the season and look forward to the
commencement of the 2015 season in May next year.

CROUP: WHAT IS IT AND HOW DO YOU GET THROUGH
Croup is a viral illness in children that is not helped by antibiotics. It
causes inflammation and swelling of the lining in the voice box and
windpipe. The narrowing from this causes hoarse voice sounds and
breathing noise.
The major features are a barking cough, stridor (noisy breathing on
inhalation) often following on from a few days of a sore throat, a
temperature, red eyes, runny nose or poor appetite. It will last for a few
days, and the cough up to a week. It can be recurrent and they may have
several episodes in 2-3 years. During these times, we advise to stop the
spread by keeping them at home during its peak.
Symptoms will often be worse at night, and children become upset and
distressed with it. Before seeking emergency help or advice from local
health professionals you can try the following treatment at home for mild
cases:
• Try to keep them calm and comforted
• Take them out in the cold air outside, or open a window or door
(wrap them up warm)
• Cool sips of fluid to relieve the throat
• Give paracetamol as prescribed
If this does not begin to alleviate it, your child is very distressed, pale
colour, blue or becomes drowsy or agitated, please call 03 4360 760 for
on-call Kurow Medical Team support in an emergency, or your own GP.

WIDER DISTRICT NEWS: Waitaki District Council Community Safety and Development Coordinator Helen Algar, is the coordinator of a project that is changing the face of community safety. The Safer Waitaki project, initiated by Mrs Algar, is a whole-of-community project with a focus on community safety and wellbeing. Mrs Algar said the project is in response to a more competitive funding and volunteer environment. It is also a way to identify and respond to the key community safety priorities and provide a mechanism for the community to work together thus maximising resources and expertise. “One of the aims was to achieve accreditation and be recognised as an International Safe Community and to achieve membership of the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Safe Communities Network. This has now been achieved.” The Safer Waitaki Coalition is governed by a cross-sector collaboration which includes local government, ACC, NZ Fire Service, workplaces, and the community. There is also a management group which represents government, non-government, community groups and organisations. The Safer Waitaki Coalition vision is aligned to the Waitaki District Council’s vision, which is ‘Waitaki district is a safe community in which to live, work and play.’ In order to achieve this Safer Waitaki Coalition has developed a Community Safety Strategy which will be regularly updated. It has undertaken research, identified priority areas, and has a number of working groups. Some examples of the work Safer Waitaki Coalition has undertaken include:
Raising Achievement across our Youth Sector - Bridging the Gaps Industry Link Health and Safety Employer Forum Family Violence Community Activities Alcohol Harm Reduction Activities
As part of the alcohol harm minimisation project the Safer Waitaki Youth Coalition was formed. The Waitaki Youth Coalition is a group of community stakeholders working towards bringing young people and key members of the community together to explore the risks of alcohol and drug related harm through a mix of activities, events, workshops and forums. Youth Coalition is well supported by Waitaki Boys High School, Waitaki Girls High School, St Kevins College and East Otago High School who are all members of the coalition. Mrs Algar said, “The commitment and participation of member groups has been a real testament to the wonderful community we have in Waitaki. People genuinely care about their community and want to work together to make the Waitaki a great place to live and work.” For more information about the Safer Waitaki initiative contact Helen Algar at [email protected]
