If you nd the shrines representing all these confessions and get a glimpse of their interior, you have been lucky to experience a rich cultural heritage unlikely to be found in such a form in any other place in Estonia. The Russian Old Believers (starovero) have been living on the west shore of Lake Peipus for about three centuries. Construction of prayer houses in the area began in the 18th century. The old believers have been able to maintain their unique culture and avoid assimilation – this applies both to their language, culture and religious afliation. They do not recognise the church reforms introduced by the Russian patriarch Nikon neither in liturgy nor in rituals. In Estonia there are currently eleven communities of Old Believers. In 1734, a paper mill using recycling technology began to work in Räpina. Looking at the red-brick main building of the Räpina paper factory, we can imagine old paper masters completing their tasks here about 300 years ago, laying the foundations for the long and distinguished history of the present company. A fascinating view opens up over the pond to the majestic main building of the Räpina Manor, known as the Sillapää Castle (built in years 1836-1847). From 1923 to 1924, it housed the agricultural class of the local secondary school, serving as the basis for the Räpina School of Horticulture. The park surrounding the castle is one of the richest in species among similar parks with its well-maintained trees and bushes – divided between the English park, the French park and the forest park. Here you can also nd the white- columned gazebo known as the Kissing Temple. According to local folklore, couples that have pledged their love to each other under the pillars of the Temple will stay together for the rest of their life. Podmotsa village is located on the border of Estonia, which is also the border of the European Union. Russia is just one hundred meters across the water. This is the place where the Seto people have lived since ancient times – on the border of two religions, between two countries. When the border between Estonia and Russia was still open, the priest from Kulje Church in Russia and local villagers used to come to Podmotsa chapel (tsässon) to celebrate Whitsunday. The beginning of celebrations was marked by the arrival of crosses and icons, which were carried across the bay on a boat or raft. During Whitsunday the tsässon is decorated with young birch trees and people coming to the mass bring eggs painted yellow with birch leaves. The eggs are later eaten on the tombs of the local cemetery together with smoked sh, pies and sõir, the traditional Seto curd cheese – a tradition stretching back to the distant past. The meal symbolises the connec- tion between the immediate and extended family in spite of the location here or there, on the boundary between life and death. Being buried in the home cemetery with parents and relatives is natural for people in Podmotsa to this day. The Onion Route area offers visitors a rich variety of cultural experience. Besides being the home of the Russian Old Believers, it's also the place to get acquainted with the Estonian peasant culture and the Baltic-German manor culture. The latter is well represented by the magnicent Alatskivi Castle. The Alatskivi Castle is located on the eastern border of Estonia, which is also the external border of the European Union. The fairy-tale castle, completed in 1885, houses various displays which introduce the culture and history of the Lake Peipus region. The castle was designed after the model of the British Royal residence, Balmoral Castle in Scotland. The local Baron Arved von Nolcken built the castle as a sign of love and in honour of his dear wife Josephine and the castle was home to his family for twenty years. Currently it accommodates a visitors' centre, a museum and a restaurant. Süvahavva village, with less than fty residents, lies on both sides of the river. A few hundred metres away you can nd the most beautiful sandstone outcroppings and caves of the Võhandu River. The Viia water mill, which is located on the shore, was built in the period of 1900-1915. The old mill building has been renovated and now accommodates the Village Hall. The wool factory with the oldest equipment in Estonia still operates in the white stone building. Here you can see how yarn is made from wool. It is also possible to buy woollen products and other local handicraft from Villakalli Puut. Near the village you can nd the Süvahavva Nature Farm, where over 40 species and varieties of tea and herbs are grown. Obinitsa is an old Seto village where the continuity of village life has never been interrupted, stretching back to over one thousand years. Time and changes have left their marks on buildings in the village and its surrounding area. Here you can nd a 1500-year-old burial place, a czarist-era church completed in the 1950s, a tsässon restored in the 21st century, a Soviet- era apartment building and production buildings in the centre of the state farm. The schoolhouse, which was completed in 1963, also houses the Obinitsa Village Centre. On the shore slope of the reservoir stands the Monument of the Singing Mother of the Seto People. Time has battered the people of Obinitsa more than it has pampered them, but the Seto leelo (an ancient polyphonic singing belonging to the UNESCO's world heritage list), rich art of textiles and jewellery, and traditional Seto food, are valued and honoured to this day. On a September night in 1353, beautiful music resounded from the empty chapel of the stronghold, unearthly candlelight ickered through the windows and the people of the stronghold saw a white cross oating in the chapel. Four months later, the situation had not changed and everybody visiting the chapel could witness the miracle. On the Pope's order, Vastseliina was declared a sacred place where numerous pilgrims got their sins redeemed. The blind could see again, the deaf could hear again, and the fame of Neuhausen (Vastseliina in German) castle spread. According to old legends, a traveller here can meet the Black Rider, who has incidentally come to inspect his premises on the moonlit night, or hear the prophecy of the virgins buried in the cellar under the tower. In the late hours of the night, you can come across a beautiful dead virgin. And sometimes, you may even get a taste of the wonder honey from the bees in the castle tower – a honey that cures all diseases. Now you can go back in time, visiting numerous displays in the former Piiri Inn (located in the current main building) and climb to the top of the stronghold tower. The Road Museum is located in the Varbuse postal station that dates back to 1863, and was once a stable for 33 horses and served the regular mail route between Tartu and Võru. The road between Tartu and Võru is part of the trade and military route with an exciting history; a road that once connected Pskov and Tartu. In the middle of the 19th century, postal carriages began travelling that road and a network of postal stations and inns was established. That is why the road is called the Postal Road. The postal station consists of ve buildings which offer an insight into the history of the Estonian roads and related topics from travelling and vehicles to innovations introduced by road. The most exciting part of the open-air exhibition of the Road Museum is the display unique in the entire world, which allows visitors to stroll through centuries and meet fascinating characters at every twist and turn. The Road Museum is a living museum – you can see vehicles of the past and future moving around. Great emphasis is placed on trafc education for children. The collection of heavy vehicles of road construction and maintenance is a real treat for those interested in technology, and the collection of road graders is one of the most outstanding of the Baltic States and Nordic countries. The Church of Otepää is of historic impor- tance and plays an essential role in Estonian folk culture. The blue, black and white ag of the Estonian Student Union, which later became the national ag and in 1918 the ofcial ag of the Republic of Estonia, was consecrated in the rectory of the church in 1884. The Otepää Fort was rst mentioned in Russian chronicles in 1116, which means that according to written records it is the third oldest settlement in Estonia. The fort also gave Otepää its name, as from the side the hill resembled the head of a bear (Otepää, oti pea bear's head). According to legend, during a war, when the cellars of the fort collapsed, a witch was trapped in there, and she is still alive today. Old folk say that if you stand at the foot of the hill on a quiet evening, you can hear the witch spinning silk yarn, her black cat purring and the clock quietly ticking. The Sangaste Castle has evolved into a visiting manor that introduces the life and work of the “Count of Rye”, Friedrich Georg Magnus von Berg, and the breeding of rye in general. For Estonians, rye has meant daily bread for generations and it has been used here as a bread grain for more than a thousand years. 130 years ago, as a result of original breeding work, the Count of Sangaste managed to develop a new variety of winter rye called "Sangaste". It is the oldest known variety of rye still in production. The Count of Sangaste was a prominent man whose behaviour set him apart from other noblemen of the time: for example, he preferred simple peasant food. The Count's grandsons still remember his simple diet: grits porridge, skimmed sour milk, and salted herring. In summertime, he would always walk around wearing traditional peasant leather shoes. Lake Võrtsjärv is the largest inland lake in Estonia. Because it is connected to Lake Peipus by the Suur Emajõgi River, it is well stocked with sh. Through centuries, the way of shing characteristic of Lake Võrtsjärv has been kale shing – trawl shing on a local traditional sailing boat built specially for this purpose. The kale boat, built according to old traditions, offers pleasure trips to those interested in sailing and shing on Lake Võrtsjärv and also on Lake Viljandi, which is just a 30-minute drive from the Lake Võrtsjärv Visitors Centre. Folk music festivals held in Viljandi, the home of the Estonian folk music, attract music lovers from close and far. In Viljandi you can also nd the Estonian Traditional Music Centre and the Viljandi Culture Academy. Field Marshal de Tolly is one of the best-known people associated with Estonia, and probably the greatest Russian military leader to have his remains buried in Estonia. Belonging to the Baltic nobility and having Scottish roots, he played a signicant role in battles against Napoleon from 1812 to 1814. Barclay de Tolly's connection with Jõgeveste began in 1791 when he married Helene Auguste Eleanore von Smitten, thereby becoming the owner of the Jõgeveste Manor. The mausoleum was built in 1823, com- missioned by the widow of Prince Barclay de Tolly in memory of her late husband. The original sarcophagi of both Prince Barclay de Tolly and his wife have been preserved to this day. It is said that during World War II, there were battles fought also near Jõgeveste, but the mausoleum was left intact out of respect for the famous military commander from both sides Tartu-Otepää-Sangaste-Urvaste-Sangaste-Valga-Tartu Length and duration of the trip: Tartu Otepää (43,7 km, 38 min); Otepää – Sangaste (21,3 km, 19 min); Sangaste – Urvaste (16,2 km, 13 min); Urvaste – Sangaste (16,2 km, 13 min); Sangaste – Valga (28 km, 26 min); Valga – Tartu (86,5 km, 1h 6 min). Six counties in South Estonia have opened the route “Living on the Edge” for visitors, inviting local people as well as guests to learn about the rich cultural heritage, wonderful nature and innovative organisations of the region. In cooperation with local communities, 21 sights worth discovering were chosen and designated bright yellow National Geographic windows. Looking through the yellow window you can experience living in an extraordinary place, near both the Russian and Latvian borders, and on the border of the European Union. Life in the context of different languages, cultures, ideas and worldviews is full of surprises and discoveries. The collaborative project introducing South Estonia is one of the events celebrating the 125th anniversary of National Geographic. Below you will nd the descriptions of some of the exciting cultural and historic sites worth visiting in South Estonia which we have prepared for you. Just pick the date and route, and enjoy your time. Estonian Road Museum and the Old Post Road Valga – one town, two countries The sphere of inuence of the town of Valga located on the Estonian-Latvian border reaches the bilingual culture space of two countries. The legend describing the division of the town between the two countries says that in old Livonia, Valga developed as a single town. When the republics of Latvia and Estonia were formed, it was impossible to decide which country the town should become part of. The border issue was resolved in 1920 by the English colonel Tallents, who apparently had been treated to a week-long reception in Estonia, then another week-long reception with the Latvians. Tallents is said to have cast the sword, which divided the town in half on a map – one side for Estonians and the other side for Latvians. Today, Valga-Valka is like a single town that cannot t within the borders of one country. Hence, there is hardly a visitor who has not posed for a picture beside the border posts. Try standing with one foot in Estonia, the other foot in Latvia, holding ('ice cream' in Estonian) jäätis in one hand and ('ice cream' in saldejums Latvian) in the other. Throughout history, Tartu has been known as a spiritual centre of Estonia, the city of good thoughts. It is the birthplace of the Estonian national theatre and here began the long tradition of Estonian song festivals. Tartu is also the city of science where you can nd one the oldest universities in Northern Europe, the University of Tartu. The university, founded in 1632, has given Estonia a number of internationally renowned scientists and scholars. Thanks to the presence of students, Tartu is also the place where youthful sparkle and academic traditions intertwine. The Town Hall Square welcomes us with its Statue of Kissing Students. The legend related to the statue tells a story of two students in love who were walking along the dark streets of the old town. Laughing and kissing, they reached the Town Hall. It was autumn and it began to rain. The young man opened his umbrella and hugged the girl. They kissed for a long time. Their love reached the skies. The girl wished that it would never end. Suddenly, a blue arrow hit them from the sky and the couple was petried. Since then, they have been standing in the Town Hall Square and have opened up the citizens' hearts for love and lips for kisses. Every time it rains, a little red heart falls from the umbrella. These hearts are reminiscent of the beautiful love story. If you stop at the right moment, a small purple heart may fall straight on your feet. Sangaste Castle Lake Uhtjärv is associated with numerous folk tales. According to the story of the birth of the Witch Land in the primeval valley of Lake Uhtjärv, the sorcerer escaped from the sleeping Uht – the sorcerer had wanted to drown Uht but a noise had woken the hero, after which the sorcerer had transformed himself into a black ox and ed but not far since he had noticed that a lake had been formed because of his prank. So he stopped on the shore of the valley, liked the place and founded his kingdom there in the primeval valley. Over the course of time, he kept pulling stunts, sank church bells in the lake and hid the correct name of the lake in the church tower under an egg. Mustvee is the home of followers of vedifferent confessions. If you nd the shrinesrepresenting all these confessions and get aglimpse of their interior, you have been luckyto experience a rich cultural heritage unlikelyto be found in such a form in any other place inEstonia. The Russian Old Believers (starovero) havebeen living on the west shore of Lake Peipusfor about three centuries. Construction ofprayer houses in the area began in the 18thcentury. The old believers have been able tomaintain their unique culture and avoidassimilation – this applies both to theirlanguage, culture and religious afliation. They do not recognise the church reforms

introduced by the Russian patriarch Nikonneither in liturgy nor in rituals. In Estonia thereare currently eleven communities of OldBelievers.

In 1734, a paper mill using recyclingtechnology began to work in Räpina. Looking atthe red-brick main building of the Räpina paperfactory, we can imagine old paper masterscompleting their tasks here about 300 yearsago, laying the foundations for the long anddistinguished history of the present company.A fascinating view opens up over the pond tothe majestic main building of the Räpina Manor, known as the Sillapää Castle (built in years1836-1847). From 1923 to 1924, it housed theagricultural class of the local secondary

school, serving as the basis for the RäpinaSchool of Horticulture. The park surrounding the castle is one of therichest in species among similar parks with itswell-maintained trees and bushes – dividedbetween the English park, the French park andthe forest park. Here you can also nd the white-columned gazebo known as the Kissing Temple.According to local folklore, couples that havepledged their love to each other under the pillarsof the Temple will stay together for the rest oftheir life.

Podmotsa village is located on the border ofEstonia, which is also the border of theEuropean Union. Russia is just one hundredmeters across the water. This is the placewhere the Seto people have lived since ancienttimes – on the border of two religions, between two countries. When the border between Estonia and Russiawas still open, the priest from Kulje Church inRussia and local villagers used to come toPodmotsa chapel (tsässon) to celebrateWhitsunday. The beginning of celebrationswas marked by the arrival of crosses andicons, which were carried across the bay on a

boat or raft. During Whitsunday the tsässon isdecorated with young birch trees and peoplecoming to the mass bring eggs painted yellowwith birch leaves. The eggs are later eaten onthe tombs of the local cemetery together withsmoked sh, pies and sõir, the traditional Setocurd cheese – a tradition stretching back to thedistant past. The meal symbolises the connec-tion between the immediate and extendedfamily in spite of the location here or there, onthe boundary between life and death. Beingburied in the home cemetery with parents andrelatives is natural for people in Podmotsa tothis day.

The Onion Route area offers visitors a richvariety of cultural experience. Besides beingthe home of the Russian Old Believers, it's alsothe place to get acquainted with the Estonianpeasant culture and the Baltic-German manorculture. The latter is well represented by themagnicent Alatskivi Castle. The Alatskivi Castle is located on the easternborder of Estonia, which is also the externalborder of the European Union. The fairy-tale

castle, completed in 1885, houses variousdisplays which introduce the culture and historyof the Lake Peipus region. The castle wasdesigned after the model of the British Royalresidence, Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Thelocal Baron Arved von Nolcken built the castleas a sign of love and in honour of his dear wifeJosephine and the castle was home to his familyfor twenty years. Currently it accommodates avisitors' centre, a museum and a restaurant.

Süvahavva village, with less than ftyresidents, lies on both sides of the river. A fewhundred metres away you can nd the mostbeautiful sandstone outcroppings and cavesof the Võhandu River. The Viia water mill, which is located on the shore, was built in theperiod of 1900-1915. The old mill building hasbeen renovated and now accommodates theVillage Hall.

The wool factory with the oldest equipment inEstonia still operates in the white stone building. Here you can see how yarn is made from wool.It is also possible to buy woollen products andother local handicraft from Villakalli Puut. Nearthe village you can nd the Süvahavva NatureFarm, where over 40 species and varieties oftea and herbs are grown.

Obinitsa is an old Seto village where thecontinuity of village life has never beeninterrupted, stretching back to over onethousand years. Time and changes have lefttheir marks on buildings in the village and itssurrounding area. Here you can nd a 1500-year-old burial place,a czarist-era church completed in the 1950s, atsässon restored in the 21st century, a Soviet-era apar tment building and productionbuildings in the centre of the state farm. The

schoolhouse, which was completed in 1963,also houses the Obinitsa Village Centre. On theshore slope of the reservoir stands theMonument of the Singing Mother of the SetoPeople.Time has battered the people of Obinitsa morethan it has pampered them, but the Seto leelo(an ancient polyphonic singing belonging to theUNESCO's world heritage list), rich art of textilesand jewellery, and traditional Seto food, arevalued and honoured to this day.

On a September night in 1353, beautiful musicresounded from the empty chapel of thestronghold, unearthly candlelight ickeredthrough the windows and the people of thestronghold saw a white cross oating in thechapel.Four months later, the situation had notchanged and everybody visiting the chapelcould witness the miracle. On the Pope'sorder, Vastseliina was declared a sacred placewhere numerous pilgrims got their sinsredeemed. The blind could see again, the deafcould hear again, and the fame of Neuhausen(Vastseliina in German) castle spread.

According to old legends, a traveller here canmeet the Black Rider, who has incidentallycome to inspect his premises on the moonlitnight, or hear the prophecy of the virgins buriedin the cellar under the tower. In the late hours ofthe night, you can come across a beautiful deadvirgin. And sometimes, you may even get ataste of the wonder honey from the bees in thecastle tower – a honey that cures all diseases. Now you can go back in time, visiting numerousdisplays in the former Piiri Inn (located in thecurrent main building) and climb to the top ofthe stronghold tower.

The Sangaste Castle has evolved into a visitingmanor that introduces the life and work of the“Count of Rye”, Friedrich Georg Magnus vonBerg, and the breeding of rye in general. ForEstonians, rye has meant daily bread forgenerations and it has been used here as abread grain for more than a thousand years.130 years ago, as a result of original breedingwork, the Count of Sangaste managed todevelop a new variety of winter rye called

"Sangaste". Valga – one town, two countries

The sphere of inuence of the town of Valgalocated on the Estonian-Latvian borderreaches the bilingual culture space of twocountries. The legend describing the divisionof the town between the two countries saysthat in old Livonia, Valga developed as asingle town. When the republics of Latvia andEstonia were formed, it was impossible todecide which country the town shouldbecome part of. The border issue wasresolved in 1920 by the English colonelTallents, who apparently had been treated toa week-long reception in Estonia, then

another week-long reception with the Latvians.Tallents is said to have cast the sword, whichdivided the town in half on a map – one side forEstonians and the other side for Latvians.Today, Valga-Valka is like a single town thatcannot t within the borders of one country.Hence, there is hardly a visitor who has notposed for a picture beside the border posts. Trystanding with one foot in Estonia, the other footin Latvia, holding ('ice cream' in Estonian)jäätisin one hand and ('ice cream' insaldejumsLatvian) in the other.
