PRELIMINARY HSC ASSESSMENT
YEAR 11 ASSESSMENTS Assessments are required for both Board Developed and Board Endorsed courses and they apply to everyone entered for the Preliminary and the HSC course. You must complete assessment tasks worth more than 50% of the total assessment marks for each course. If you fail to do this, you will not have satisfactorily completed the course and it cannot be counted towards the twelve units required for the Preliminary Year of Study and the course will not be recorded on your Preliminary Record of Achievement. Preliminary assessment tasks provide a measure of your performance in a wider range of tasks and activities than can be tested in an external examination. They also enable you to work at a consistent pace throughout the year and help prevent you from becoming overwhelmed and pressured at exam time. It is essential that you take all aspects of the Preliminary Course seriously. You must have satisfactorily completed all 12 units to progress to your HSC Course in Term 4. Attendance, classwork and homework, and an Assessment tasks, must all be satisfactory.
THE PURPOSE OF ASSESSMENTS The School Assessment is intended to provide an indication of a student's attainment, which is based on:
(i) A wider range of syllabus objectives than is measured by the external examination; and
(ii) Measures and observations made throughout the course rather than at a single examination.
The Board of Studies (BOSTES) is the controlling body for the Higher School Certificate (HSC). The HSC will be awarded to those students who have completed at least 12 units of study in the Preliminary year and 10 units of study, 6 units of which must be Board Developed courses (including 2 units of English) in the HSC year. Refer to the checklist on page 5 of this booklet. When the results of the HSC are published, the certificate will show two marks for each Board course; the School Moderated Assessment mark and the Examination mark gained in the HSC. However, Content Endorsed Courses (CEC) will have only one mark shown - the School Assessment mark.

SCHOOL ASSESSMENT The assessment will measure the student's achievement relative to other students attempting the same course. The mark will be based on specific and stated course outcomes for each task as indicated on the Assessment Task notification distributed to the students. Each subject will have its own specific assessment components. No assessment tasks are to be due the week before, during or the week after, exam periods.
COMPONENTS OF THE ASSESSMENT In each course, teachers are required to assess specific outcomes of the course. See the Subject Choices Stage 6 booklet for details of each subject.
LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS Assessment work completed or submitted late without an approved, written application for “Student Illness, Accident or Misadventure” will receive zero marks. If a student is absent on the day of a school examination or test, they will sit the test on the first day they return to school. A zero result will be recorded unless a “Student Illness, Accident or Misadventure” application has been approved. If students know they will be absent from school on the date an assessment task is due (e.g. representing the school in sport, performing arts, school excursion, work placement, etc.), they must submit the task before the due date. If students know that they will be absent from school on the date a test or examination will be held (e.g. representing the school in sport, performing arts, school excursion, work placement, etc.), they must negotiate with their teacher and the Head Teacher of the faculty to find an alternate date to do the test/examination.
NON-COMPLETION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS Where a student fails to submit an assessment task or is absent for an in-class task without a valid reason they will receive an N-warning. When the task is eventually completed they will receive zero marks, but may be deemed to have satisfied the course requirements. Failure to respond to N-warning letters as directed may cause a student to be regarded as failing to meet course requirements and thus be ineligible for the award of a Higher School Certificate in that subject.
MALPRACTICE Where a student has been found guilty of cheating or malpractice (e.g. plagiarism), no marks will be awarded for that particular test or assignment. This may also be considered as a non-serious attempt to complete the task and result in an N-warning.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS When a candidate fails to redeem at least two N-warnings in a course, the Principal may determine that the course has not been studied satisfactorily and will then notify the Board of Studies. If a course is not satisfactorily completed, a student will receive no results in that course. The course will then not count towards their pattern of study for the completion of the Preliminary Year. In most cases this will mean that the candidate has not satisfactorily studied the minimum 12 units mandatory for the completion of the Preliminary Year of Study.
REPORTING Students will receive regular feedback on their progress through the teacher's evaluation of the assessment tasks. Year 11 Reports will show an assessment ranking in each subject, levels of achievement for outcomes and a teacher comment.
APPEALS Where a candidate feels that a decided error has been made in an assessment task or overall ranking, a written appeal can be forwarded to the Principal for a review of the procedures involved in the assessment. Mr C Dwyer Principal

HSC PATTERN OF STUDY REQUIREMENTS CHECKLIST FOR THE 2017-2018 HSC
NOTE: All requirements apply to BOTH the 2017 Preliminary and 2018 HSC course patterns for the 2016 Higher School Certificate Students who complete the Higher School Certificate in 2018 must meet the following requirements:
PATTERN OF STUDY
At Least 12 Preliminary and 10 HSC units of study.
At least 2 units of a Board Developed Course in English. (includes 2U English Studies CEC)
At least 4 subjects.
At least 6 units of Board Developed Courses.
A student may count a maximum of 6 Preliminary units and 6 HSC units from courses in Science. (see ACE Manual 8006, December 2011)
In the Preliminary study pattern, Senior Science cannot be studied in combination with Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science or Physics. However, students who have satisfactorily completed the Preliminary course in one or more of these courses but do not wish to undertake the corresponding HSC course may elect to study the Senior Science course. (see ACE Manual, 6002, February 2013)
At least 3 courses of 2 unit value or greater. (may be Board Developed and/or Board Endorsed Courses)
Beginners Language courses are for students with little or no previous study or knowledge of the language. (see Eligibility criteria, ACE Manual 8008, December 2011)
Students are not enrolled in Board Developed and/or Board Endorsed Course combinations which are the subject of Board exclusions. (see ACE Manual 6002, February 2013).

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION COURSES
VET ASSESSMENT POLICY Vocational Education Training (VET) Courses are dual accredited courses. Students have the opportunity to be awarded with: • Units towards Preliminary and HSC qualification • Competencies which can lead to a statement of Attainment, Certificate 1, 2 or 3 which are awarded under the Vocational Education and Training Qualifications Framework (VETQF) Students will be assessed in both areas during each VET Course. 1. VETQF ASSESSMENT All Industry Curriculum Framework Courses are assessed under National Competency Standards that have been determined by industry for inclusion in the framework training packages. Competency based assessment means that students work to develop the competencies, skills and knowledge described in each Unit of Competency to be assessed as competent. A student must demonstrate to a qualified assessor that they can effectively carry out various tasks and combinations of tasks listed, to the standard required in the appropriate industry. There is no mark awarded in competency-based assessment. Students are assessed as either Satisfactory or Not Yet Satisfactory Demonstrating competence means that you can perform the task or show an understanding to the level required by the industry standards. The units of competency achieved will be recognised on a vocational qualification. Students will be involved in a variety of assessment tasks ranging from practical tasks to written tasks. If students are deemed not satisfactory at that time, they will be given at least one further opportunity at an agreed time to be re-assessed. There are a number of competencies that may only be offered once during the course due to their: • WHS requirement • Cost • Time frame • Supervision required • Resource availability. Specific information about these competencies will be issued to students at the beginning of the course. 2. HIGHER SCHOOL CERTIFICATE (HSC) Students will be awarded units towards their Preliminary and HSC by studying a VET Course. Some VET Courses e.g. Curriculum Framework Courses will allow students to include a mark from the written HSC examination, which can be used in the calculation of the University Admission Index (UAI). As with all HSC courses, Board of Studies (BOS) procedures apply to all VET Courses. (Refer to school BOS procedures). VET courses will be listed on the HSC Certificate Record of Achievement. No mark will be listed for the achievement of competency; VETQF qualification will be assessed by BOS separately. For students who have undertaken the HSC examination, a scaled examination mark will be recorded on the HSC Certificate. No school based assessment mark will be recorded. No Assessment Mark for VET Courses is required by the BOS. An estimated examination mark for students entered for the HSC written examination must be submitted. This mark will be used only in the case of an illness/disadvantage appeal. The estimate mark will reflect each student’s achievement on one or more written tasks, similar in nature to the HSC examination. A trial HSC examination mark would be a suitable task.

3. WORK PLACEMENT: Work Placement is a mandatory HSC requirement of curriculum framework VET courses. Appropriate hours are as follows: 120 hour course - a minimum of 35 hours in a workplace 240 hour course - a minimum of 70 hours in a workplace 60 hour course (extension) - a minimum of 14 hours in a workplace Failure to comply with HSC mandatory workplace hours will mean that students have not fulfilled the BOS course requirements. Penalties will occur if mandatory hours are not met. Learning in the workplace will enable students to • Progress towards the achievement of industry competencies • Develop appropriate attitude towards work • Learn a range of behaviours appropriate to the industry • Practice skills acquired off the job in a classroom or workshop • Develop additional skills and knowledge, including key competencies. Note: Information Technology and Entertainment Industry Courses may simulate 35 hours of work placement. This must be documented and authorised by the school. 4. ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE Information regarding mandatory assessment tasks will be set out in an Assessment Schedule. These tasks will be used as evidence of competency. 5. APPEALS PROCEDURE Normal school assessment appeals procedures will apply for VET courses.
