We really need ALL of our members to be in place on Sunday, We especially need conces- sion workers. This is a very profitable part of our show and we need all of the help that we can get. Spouses and other teen and adult family members are welcome. On Sunday, we will need members to ar- rive at McDonnell Park no later than 7 am. That will give us two hours to set up and it will be a very busy time. Some cars arrive early so we must have everything in place as soon as possi- ble. After we have finished classifying, register- ing and parking the cars, we need our members to help with the concessions, the 50-50 sales and ballot counting. Cindy Ahrens and Jeff Hohl have fine tuned our ballot counting each year and things should go even better than last year. It has been decided that anyone selling 50-50 tickets or counting ticket money will not be al- lowed to purchase tickets. It just looks bad when a member working with the tickets wins the pot as has happed the past couple of years. A special note to those parking cars. It can get very busy at classifica- tion and registration and sometimes cars are put into the wrong class. Please check each car as it comes into your area to see if it is properly clas- sified. If you see a mistake, please notify Jim Biermann ASAP. Also, some of the “trophy hunters” will pull some shenanigans such as changing their registration form and window card so make sure that everything matches properly. At the close of the show, all show items need to be packed and taken off and we will need to do a sweep of the grounds to police up all of the trash. This usually does not take long and we should be out of the park by 5 pm or so. The show shirts that you may have or- dered and are now available. The cost is $10. With the sponsorship of Dave Sinclair Ford, we will have even better attendance prizes for our participants. We will also have a drawing for a set of B.F Goodrich tires thanks to the ef- forts of Lonny Childress and Gateway Classic Mustang. Unfortunately, our members will not be eligible for the tire drawing. If you are a newer member or one who has not worked our show before, we could sure use your help. If you would like to help, just ask for our show chairman, Jim Biermann, who will find something for you to do.

O n June 19th, some of our members attended the 11th annual Hazelwood

Baptist Church Car Show. With many of our members going to Tulsa for the Mid-America Shelby Meet, our turnout was smaller than usual. Also the brutally hot day contributed to a slightly smaller turnout than most years.

Representing our club were A. Ron Walters. B. Mike Lloyd. C. John Sullivan. D. Danny Bullion. E. Al Mercer. F. Burt Pen-nington. And G. Mark Carey.

Also in attendance were John Hartman and Jim Biermann.

The heat of the day turned to strong storms but most of our members made it home before the skies let loose.

U p to now, most of the Ford F-150 Raptor’s appeal

lay in the wicked off-road suspension parts tucked under its wide body sheetmetal. The truck’s 5.4-liter, 310-hp, 365-lb-ft V8 just didn’t live up to the bat-out-of-hell tradi-tion of its SVT predeces-sor, the F-150 Lighting.

That all changed with the mid-model-year addition of the Raptor 6.2, with an all-new 6.2-liter, 411 hp, 434-lb-ft V8.

The engine has a bigger bore than its stroke to allow for larger valves and higher revs for improved respon-siveness, giving the Raptor true SVT vigor. It’s not as quick as the supercharged SVT Lightning of old, which posted near-6.0 second 0-to-60mph times, but the 6.2-liter Raptors 6.9-second time is a full second and a half quicker than the base Raptor.

Our recent test drive at Ford’s proving ground near Detroit in-cluded a range of paved roads, low-traction gravel, steep inclines and enough mud to make the soggy British Midlands seem arid. The Rap-tor 6.2 loved wallowing in the mud, thanks to its

mongo internal triple-bypass Fox Racing Shox, Raptor-exclusive 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain 315/70-17 tires, massive 11.2 ground clearance, electronic locking rear differential, stability con-

trol, traction control, hill-decent control, off-road mode-the works.

A l t h o u g h i t ’ s seven inches wider than a normal F-150, the Rap-tor also made easy work of tight wooded trails, de-spite mud that made steering nearly irrelevant at times. We picked our way through the rutted, sloppy backwoods two-tracks, up and down hills,

with the Raptor’s 6.2-liter engine providing ample assistance. Pushing up steep grades only made the engine dig deeper into it reserves, especially as the revs climbed to match power demand.

Is the Raptor for real?

So far, 7,200 buyers have stepped up to get one, with 3,000 of those orders being for the 6.2-liter (at a $3,000 premium over the base Rap-tor). The Raptor’s av-erage time on a deal-ership lot is six days.

Need more? Ford tells us that when the 2011 Rap-

tor hits the market late this summer, the line-up will expand to include a Crew Cab model, of-fered exclusively with the 6.2 –liter engine.

Mud, as we understand it, will be optional.

O n July 17th, our club will be traveling

to Alton Illinois for the 33rd annual SIMA Mustang and Ford car show. We will be meeting at the UAW hall on Pershall Road, just past the old Ford Plant. This location is just off North Lindbergh and Highway 270. We will gather there at 8:45 am and will be leaving at 9 am sharp. We will make a stop just before we get to Alton for fuel and such. This show is on blacktop and usually very warm so come prepared. This will be a club event for points.

A fter more than 70 years, Ford Mo-tor Company will wind down its Mercury product line, according to

a report from Bloomberg. The brand, launched in 1939, has struggled since the beginning of the millennium, with sales plummeting some 75%. Rumors of its closure have been circling for years. Ford sold just 92,299 Mercury-badged vehicles in 2009, though sales are up a bit this year.

According to the report, executives at Ford are preparing a proposal to kill the brand, to be reviewed this summer. The two- to four-year wind down would include the eventual transition of all Lincoln products -- currently sold alongside Mercury vehicles in distinct dealerships -- to Ford showrooms.

"You have to worry about Lincoln dealers if Mer-cury goes away," said John McElroy, host of the Autoline Detroit television program. "Dealers need that volume to sell, but they also need cars to service as well."

Lincoln products, which share similar platforms, generate higher profits for the company. Many Mercury products have MSRPs close to -- or

sometimes exactly the same as -- Ford equiva-lents. In the first quarter of this year, the brand

accounted for only 1.9% of Ford’s total profits.

While lagging sales are certainly to blame, the erosion of Mercury’s identity played a large role as well. With only four vehicles in Mercury show-rooms -- all re-badged Ford models with few dif-ferentiating features -- Americans seem to have forgotten about it. The shut down of the Mercury brand gives notice that Ford's attempt to create a separate and unique experience for Lincoln was in vain.

B ringing new meaning to the phrase Tough Ford Truck, this vehicle belongs to the St. Charles County Tactical Unit, also known as the SWAT

team. Based roughly on a Ford F-350 truck, the truck has an updated frame, bullet proof tires and glass and lots of heavy steel panels. Not designed for any road course and not able to brag about gas mileage, it does have shoot ports and a top turret.

Officially the Lenco BearCat, it was developed as a tactical armored vehicle for special operation units within the law enforcement community.

We did try to get it to attend our Blue Cruise but it’s on call 24/7 so this was not possible.

T his month we wel-come new member, John Reichle. John

drives Ford Ranger pickup and resides in St. Louis. John’s sponsor was Bart McNail. Welcome!

L ooking ahead to August, the Mustang Club of St. Louis will hold their 1st car show. The date is Saturday, August 7th at the IBEW

building and hall located at 5850 Elizabeth Ave-nue in southwest St. Louis City. We will have caravan info in next months newsletter. Also, we will be attending the 9th annual St. Anthony’s, Route 66 car show on the 29th. For those want-ing to caravan, we will meet at the Burger King at Hwy. 141 and Hwy. 44 at 8:45 am and will be leaving at 9 am sharp. This show is known for its great roast beef and fried chicken dinners. For show information, call 573-468-7974. Both shows are club events for points.

New member, Ron Walters, has sent us info on a car show in Troy, Missouri. The show will be held at the Troy First Baptist Church, lo-

cated at 1000 Elm Tree Road, The show will be held on September 4th and offers free entry, food and beverages, similar to the Hazelwood Baptist Car Show. For info and map, go to www. Troyfirst.com It was reported last month that we had purchased a new banner and club promo poster. We have now added a second tent as with large turnouts at most of our events, one tent was in-sufficient. We were able to help celebrate Bart McNail’s birthday at our June meeting. Bart even supplied the cake. Happy Birthday Bart! We do have a tentative date for our fall color tour. If all goes as planned, we will head out to this popular event on Oc-tober 17th. Although the route is not set, we hope to finish the trip at Bob’s Gasoline Alley. If this works as planned, we will not be bringing food this year as we will dine at Bob’s. They offer a great buffet at a very reasonable price. We will update as information is available. Our 50-50 winner at our June member-ship meeting was Teresa McDougal. We had a large turnout that night making for a large pot. Teresa went home with an additional $43.
