Senior Leaders Promoting Army Reserve readiness On Point The Army Reserve celebrates 108th Anniversary The U.S. Army Reserve was founded Apr. 23, 1908, when Congress authorized the Army to establish a Medical Reserve Corps, the official predecessor of the Army Reserve. The Army Reserve has provided trained and ready Soldiers and units for World Wars I and II, Vietnam, Desert Shield/ Desert Storm, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. Consistently engaged since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 310,000 Army Reserve Soldiers have mobilized and deployed in support of the Total Army and Joint Force. (April 15, 2016) -- The Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command’s 832nd Transportation Battalion re- cently began participating in a Sealift Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise (SEDRE) at the Jacksonville Port Authority’s newly christened In- termodal Container Transfer Facility. Designed to train units for deployment readi- ness, a SEDRE includes the deployment of unit personnel and equipment, as well as an upload and offload of a brigade-sized task force, using real port facilities and ships. This is the first SE- DRE that SDDC has participated in since 2000. As surface warriors are being utilized through- out the world, Capt. David Wallace, the 832nd’s Operations Officer, considers SEDRE’s to be one of the events that ensure such operations are be- ing done expeditiously and safely. “With an organization being able to pick-up… get ready to go to war – or any type of contingen- cy where equipment and personnel are needed – readiness is key. That is why exercises like the SEDRE are so important to the warfight and the warfighter,” he said. Adding, that when the 832nd is called upon for contingencies in the real-world, it is impera- tive that everyone understand their purpose and the roles they play. “During the war on terror, the military has got- ten used to falling in on assets that were already pre-staged at a certain locations, he said. “But now that the forces are being utilized in newer areas, it is more cost effective and advantageous for a unit to move itself to a location – using their own equipment.” Equipment-laden storage containers belonging to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) await embarkation on the Bob Hope-class roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel, U.S. Naval Ship Benavidez, Apr. 19, 2016, in Jacksonville, Fla., during a Sealift Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise.
