I love looking out over the hills that surround my home on December nights. Holiday lights start to light up and sparkle making the long nights seem a little more magical and festive. Somehow it makes even living here in San Diego feel a little bit like winter.
We’ll all be gathering to light the San Elijo holiday tree on December 3. You’ll be there, right? This year the tree lighting and the addition of the Foodie Fest event, the Town Center will be buzzing with activity and it is sure to get you in the mood for the holidays. Grab your neighbors and friends and make a night of it.
Don’t miss the Food Drive by Hometown Realty. A brown grocery bag was delivered with your copy of The Fountain. Just fill it up with some food staples and leave it in your driveway on December 11. Volunteers will

Deck the Hills!
This year’s Holiday Tree Lighting event has mor-phed into a culinary extravaganza! You won’t want to miss it! On Friday, December 3, the San Elijo Hills Town Square will be surrounded by 20 of the finest gourmet food trucks from Southern California at what is being coined “The San Elijo Hills Foodie Fest & Tree Lighting.” The trucks will be serving delicacies ranging from sushi to sweet potato fries and Mexican-Korean barbecue fusions to Indian curries.
If you aren’t already familiar with the concept of food truck clusters, the gourmet food truck phenom-enon has exploded throughout the country. It started in metropolitan centers such as Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles, but it is still fairly new to San Diego. San Elijo Hills gets to experience this new trend right here in our backyard!
San Elijo Hills Foodie Fest & Tree Lighting
The Foodie Fest and Tree lighting will start with happy hour at 4 pm at Peppertree Hills Café & Hendo’s. Stop by for a toast and to gather with your friends. Hometown Realty will also be hosting an Open House and holiday cheer throughout the evening. Then, head over to the Town Square where food trucks will be selling their tasty wares from 5 to 8:30 pm. (Bring cash because most trucks don’t take crédit.) Prices will range from approximately $3 to $10.
Holiday festivities include crafts for kids throughout the evening and the annual tree lighting ceremony at 7 pm. Kids are encouraged to bring a family photo to decorate as part of a craft.
The community festivities are open to the public and the event is being widely publicized by the Developer to promote our community. So, it will be a busy night
in San Elijo Hills, but it will be a lot of fun! So, use this opportunity to invite your friends and head over to the Town Square
for some Holiday cheer and some good eats!

pick them up and deliver them. What a wonderful way to give to local families in need.
Take some time to read through this issue and mark your calendars so you don’t miss anything during this busy time of year. You especially won’t want to miss Santa when he stops right here in San Elijo for photos the week before Christmas.
When I look out at the holiday lights scattered throughout the hills this month, I’ll be sending a special holiday wish from my house to yours – a wish for a season filled with love and family and a new year that launches with health and renewed prosperity.
Get out this month and celebrate the season. Find ways to be generous and take time to notice the needs around you. Most of all, slow down and enjoy the magic of the season while it lasts.

5th annual san elijo hills 5K! are You ready?
The Academy at San Elijo is proud to bring you the 5th Annual San Elijo Hills 5K “Toughest 5K in North County” on Saturday, January 8, 2011. You can walk or run the course, but one way or the other, get off the couch with a healthy start to the New Year! This run has become a community tradition here in San Elijo thanks to the dedi-cation of a variety of residents.
The 5th Annual San Elijo Hills 5K will be expanding with the addition of a new and maybe more challenging route. After the run is over, there will be a family event featuring many local vendors, food, beverages, and plenty of fun things for the kids to do including a 100-yard Kids Dash for ages 7 and under. The family event afterwards will be open to all race participants and San Elijo residents.
Please visit our website for complete details and information including online registration, a map of the course route, start time, and check in infor-mation at: www.theacademyatsanelijo.com. From there, select 5th Annual San Elijo Hills 5K under headlines on the right hand side of the page.

have you registered for the san elijo hills 5K yet? if not, why? let’s get honest! okay, maybe you’d really like to participate, but you’re just not sure if you can do it. maybe you want to support the event and the fundraising it will provide, but you’re just not a runner. besides, with the holidays ahead - just imagine the few extra pounds you’ll have to carry.
hey, if this is you - you are in luCK! san elijo hills is providing a special program designed to get people ready for the run. (it just keeps getting harder to make excuses, doesn’t it?) the san elijo hills Couch to 5K Challenge is a nine-week program that started last month, but it’s not too late to jump in and get involved in the fun.
the group meets on tuesday, thursday and saturday mornings for 20-30 minutes. these fun, simple and free training sessions are led by fantastic running coaches and are designed to have you running the 5K on january 8 without pain, injury or excuse! tuesdays are lead by Dax ross who lives here in san elijo hills. he’s an avid runner and founder of the north County running Club. thursdays are lead by Chris & sarah holder, residents of san elijo and owners of re:form fitnes studio. and, saturday’s coach, Keith Vanasdalan is a running coach from athlete’s edge. these highly-skilled coaches have provided participants with excellent advantages as well as tips and feedback on technique and improving core strength.
san elijo hills Couch to 5K Challenge
and, it’s not too late for you to take advantage of this great resource. it might even help you stay active through the holidays!
even if you can’t make it to the training sessions, jump on their facebook page and folllow the program on your own time. You’ll love having the support and encouragement of the group. it doesn’t matter what level you’re at, the program will help improve both your endur-ance and your confidence.
resident faye Capps said she hasn’t been actively exercising for a long time and that she is not a runner, but this program has not only motivated her to participate in the race, it’s also given her more energy in the mornings. she encourages everyone to get involved, “if i can do it, you absolutely can do it!”
Don’t let this opportunity pass you by. get up off the couch and make a commitment to support yourself, the race and your neighbors. if nothing else, you’ll make some new friends.
if you want to learn more about how to plug into the program, contact the group at [email protected].

on your doorstepDexter’s Deli – san elijo hills is now Closed
Residents were sad to see the San Elijo Hills location of Dexter’s Deli close unexpectedly last month. Within moments of the announcement, residents were quickly scrambling to see if there was anything that could be done to help keep them here. However, the owner, Tori Rosay, quickly made it clear that the decision to close the store was not due to lack of support from the community, but rather, simply due to the economy and the need to scale back. Their other two locations in Carlsbad and Del Mar are still open and you can use your Frequent Barker Card at those locations. Dexter’s Deli appreciates all of the support from the community and is sorry to have to say goodbye to their newest location.

san elijo students to benefit from recent state grant
The City of San Marcos was notified last month that it will receive $84,150 of state grant funds for a Safe Routes to School improvement proj-ect. The work includes the installation of sidewalk behind the existing five-foot sidewalk to provide a safe area for students to cross at the Schoolhouse Way and San Elijo Road intersection. It also includes the installation of guardrails on the easterly side of Schoolhouse Way. The required local match for this grant-funded project will come from the San Marcos Unified School District.
thank You neighbors & extraordinary Conceptions
For the last several Halloweens, the Caballero family has hosted a Haunted House on Halloween at their home in San Elijo Hills. Neighbors come from all over for a chance to visit the Haunted House, which grows more elaborate every year. Last year, Mario and Stephanie decided to turn their haunted house into a way to generate funds for the elementary school. The Caballeros accept a small donation for entry into the Haunted House and then they triple that amount through their company – Extraordinary Conceptions as a donation to the San Elijo Elementary PTO. This year they collected $126 from visitors to the Haunted House and Extraordinary Conceptions tripled that amount to $378. What a great way to raise money for the school, while also promoting a strong sense of community through this unique annual tradition.
Vandalism & loitering
San Elijo Hills HOA recent-ly put out an announcement to homeowners regarding recent complaints from residents regard-ing vandalism and unruly school-aged children in the Town Square. Children have been observed climbing on the Town Square pergola, fishing out frogs from the pond and loitering in the middle of San Elijo Road. Because this behavior is danger-ous and should be discouraged, parents are asked to please talk with their children about respecting our community common areas and to being cau-tious near traffic. If you observe this type of behavior, the best thing you can do is to contact the San Marcos Sheriff immediately at (760) 510-5200. This way a deputy can be dispatched to the area and this type of behavior will be discouraged.
Kid’s news Day

the fountain started exactly seven years ago with our first issue in December 2003. if you don’t know the story, it all started when two next door neighbors (tim minjares & Karen smith in Cedar Crossing) decided to go out on a limb and make it happen.
when we first started the publication, we just saw an opportunity to lend our professional experi-ence in an effort to build community here in san elijo hills. seven years later, we are building com-munity not only in our neighborhood, but in several others throughout southern California and arizona. it’s crazy to think that what started with a simple idea, has grown into something that reaches over 35,000 homes each and every month.
i’ll bet you’ve had a ‘crazy idea’ float in your head from time to time. why not get that idea out and make something happen? You never know where it might lead! make 2011 the year you take action on your idea. use the fountain as a place to start. we loVe to publish guest articles, spotlight residents and showcase the great things happening in and around san elijo hills.
if you’ve ever wondered how we go about ‘selecting’ our stories, you may be surprised to know how easy it is. whether you’d like to be one of our
featured families or to contribute an article on a topic that concerns you or in your area of expertise, all you have to do is contact us and we’ll get it into a future issue.
if you have a club or group that meets regularly, we’d love to spotlight your group to get more peo-ple involved. if you have a cause you’re supporting and would love the support of your community, let us know. if you’re opening a new business and want to spread the word, give us a call.
maybe you have an idea for a group you’d like to start or a cause you’d like to support. why not contribute your idea to the fountain and see what kind of response you get. You’ll be surprised how many people you can meet just by participating in some capacity.
2011 is going to be an exciting year! as we talk with our neighbors, so many people are starting new endeavors and new eras in life. by support-ing our neighbors and their success, we all benefit. tough economic times have forced all of us to take inventory of our lives and to focus on the people closest to us. please call us any time and share your thoughts. we look forward to helping you make things happen in 2011!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably heard of Lyme disease. You know it’s carried by ticks. And, you know it’s bad, but you probably don’t know much more than that. After speaking with a neighbor here in San Elijo Hills who was bit by a tick and was not diagnosed with lyme disease until a year and a half later, I realized a little education could go a long way. This resident shared her story with me in hopes that it could help someone – whether they were suffering from symptoms that hadn’t been diagnosed or to simply provide some tips on what to do if you think you may have been exposed. The important thing is to realize that Lyme disease is very real and that early diagnosis and treatment can save you a tremendous amount of complications.
Lyme disease is a bacteria (borreilia burgdorferi). It is often carried by ticks and, while ticks are known to primarily feed on deer (which can be found in our hills), they also latch onto rats, mice, dogs, horses and other domesticated animals. If you live in San Elijo Hills and frequent our trails, chances are you’ve had to remove a tick off of your pet at some point.
Not all ticks are infected with Lyme disease and not all Lyme disease is carried by ticks. It can also be carried by fleas, biting flies, mosquitos, etc. Lyme disease is found in all 50 states and our north county lagoons attract a lot of migrating birds and wildlife, all of which can carry these insects.
According to the California Lyme Disease Association, people usually get Lyme disease from ticks infected with Lyme spirochetes. Most human cases are caused by the nymphal, or immature, form of the tick. Nymphs are about the size of a poppy seed. Because their bite is painless, many people do not realize they have been bitten. Early in the infection, many people experience a flu-like illness that may clear up without treatment. Some people get a rash around the site of the tick bite. Most of the time, the rash is an ordinary red area, however, if it is a bull’s-eye shape with a darker edge, it is a definite sign of Lyme disease and needs immediate treatment. Unfortunately, this distinctive rash is uncommon.
Lyme is a difficult disease to diagnose because it mimicks so many dif-ferent diseases, including: flu, fibromyalgia, MS, etc. In addition, lab tests may be negative in the first 4-6 weeks, making it even more difficult to diagnose. Later symptoms can include headache, joint/muscle pain, light/sound sensitivity, cognitive impairment, sleep disturbance, depression, artri-tis, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, and tingling shooting pains.
think You’ve been exposed?
If you think you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of Lyme disease, please visit http://www.lymedisease.org for more information and talk with your doctor.
how to prevent lyme Disease
To prevent exposure to Lyme Disease, please take the following precautions – particularly while hiking on local trails:
• Avoid tick-infested areas, such as leaf litter under trees. Don’t sit on stumps or fallen logs.
• Wear light-colored long pants and long sleeves so you can easily see any ticks.
• Tuck shirt into pants and tuck pants into socks.• Use DEET on skin and treat clothing with spray
containing permethrin.• Do a thorough tick check upon returning inside and for several days fol-
lowing exposure.• Check bedding for several days following exposure for ticks that drop off.• Ticks, especially nymphal ticks, are tiny. Find and remove them before
they bite.
if You are bitten:
• Use fine-point tweezers or a special tick-removing tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. If you don’t have tweezers, protect your fin-gers with a tissue. Pull the tick straight out with steady, even pressure.
• Avoid squeezing the tick, breaking it, or allowing any blood to remain on your skin.
• Place the tick in a small plastic bag or vial with blades of grass, leaf, or moist (not wet) piece of tissue.
• Label the bag with your name, date, site of bite and how long tick was attached.
• Have the tick identified and tested by a lab, health department or veteri-narian.
• Wash your hands, disinfect the tweezers and bite site.• Educate yourself about tick-borne diseases and consult a doctor to see if
treatment is warranted.
Lyme disease can affect both adults and children. If not diagnosed and treated early, it can spread and may go into hiding in your body. Weeks, months or even years later you may have problems with your brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, heart and circulation, digestion, reproductive system, and skin. It’s a tricky disease and a very unpleasant one. So, please take care in educat-ing yourself and your family to prevent this disease. In addition, if you have pets, talk with your veterinarian about preventative measures and medications.

Angela, Rick and Chase moved into San Elijo Hills last year. They owned their home in Springfield for a number of years, but were renting it out until they made the move here from San Diego last year. Rick is originally from Florida. He has been in the Navy since he was 18 and is now a Leading Culinary Specialist who stands the Chief of the Watch on a nuclear-powered submarine. Angela is from Austin, Texas, but has lived
in San Diego for 12 years. Her parents moved to the area first and she fell in love with the area while visiting them. Angela’s brother was in the Navy, which is how she eventually met Rick. Angela is a Realtor. She started her real estate career in new home sales and eventually acting as Director of Sales & Marketing for a well-known San Diego home builder. She was with Coldwell Banker for five years where she and her partner were top sales agents. Eventually, she moved to Schoolhouse Realty because of their commitment to donate 10% of their earnings to the schools of their clients’ choice.
Angela and Rick have a little boy. Chase is now two years old. Currently, a ‘stay at home’ kid, Chase spends his time running, playing and exploring the world around him. He also enjoys having his grandparents nearby.
As a family, the Holts love to hike and ride bikes. They enjoy the out-doors and live an active lifestyle. Most of all, the Holts love San Elijo Hills and plan to stay for a long time because of the people, the close-knit feel of the community, and the convenient location.
Next time you see them out and about, say hello! They haven’t been here long and are looking forward to meeting more and more of their neighbors here in San Elijo Hills.

Are you on PACE? bY lYnDa mCDonell, prinCipal
At San Elijo Elementary School we are learning to be scholars so that we can be on PACE for college. Partners Advancing College for Everyone (PACE) is a partnership between the San Marcos Unified School District and California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM). The PACE promise guarantees CSUSM admission to students who have met specific requirements beginning with the graduating classes of 2009. A provision for financial support is also provided to eligible graduating seniors.
At SEES we believe it’s never too early to start thinking about college. Our students are learning that scholarly behavior includes being ready to learn, having assignments completed and being an active participant in class.
Scholars set goals and monitor their progress towards accomplishing them. They consider attending college or career training one of their goals.
The staff at SEES is collaborating with the counseling department of San Marcos High School to inform families about high school graduation requirements and college readiness. Students who complete their K-12 education have choices and opportunities, including college. On Wednesday January 12, Leandro Galaz, one of the SMHS counselors will make a pre-sentation for our SEES parents. This presentation at 6:30 pm in our mul-tipurpose room will help parents set goals with their elementary scholars to keep everyone on PACE.
Dine-out at blackstone pizza
Our December dine-out will be held at Blackstone Pizza on Thursday, December 9 from 11 am to 10 pm. The dine-out will include all dine-in, take-out, and delivery (after 5 pm); perfect for the busy holidays! Blackstone will generously donate 20% of all sales of food and beverages purchased by those who mention SEES when ordering. Blackstone Pizza is located at 574 East Mission Road in San Marcos.

Achieving a Balance in Extracurricular ActivitiesPoints from a PrinciPal – douglas hall
It has been more than 25 years since David Elkind’s book, The Hurried Child, focused our attention in education on the pressure put on students who are overprogrammed. The message of the book caused both parents and educators like me to turn our attention to the stress caused by too many activities in the daily routine of students. Yet, no simple solution has been promoted, and today more than ever before in any generation, students are perhaps more hurried and more fragmented than ever. Therefore, it is crucial that we embrace goals at home and school that move toward achieving a balance in extracurricular activities, enabling our students to achieve in the academic arena while developing a balance in their social, emotional, and physical needs, which will be critical throughout their lifetime.
Today’s students, both in elementary and secondary schools, are frag-mented by endless opportunities. In-school opportunities offer extensive options for extracurricular activities. Home, church, and community options also bid for time and participation of students. Sports, clubs, tutoring, church and synagogue programs, cultural activities, and the ultimate endeavor for our teenagers – a part-time job – often take over a student’s life and dictate his or her use of time. While experiencing the blessings of or all these wonderful programs and interesting activities, students may find their extra-curricular activities often times will require top priority in their lives. Their attention to academics may start to take a backseat.
Both parents and teachers want students to have appropriate interests outside the classroom. Research has shown extensive evidence that students who participate in extracurricular activities are better adjusted and more able to cope with problem solving in life. Even more important, healthy extra-curricular activities play an important role in keeping today’s students away from negative environments and out of trouble. This is especially true in this technology age... The key is finding a balance between performance that meets academic requirements and participation in extracurricular activities.
The time has come for students to be guided toward a balance. If our students are to take advantage of the options for extracurricular experiences while they give appropriate attention to academic achievement, then wise
choices must be made. These choices must also be decided in the context of the personal needs, wishes, and goals of each individual student and his family. Each of our students is unique and each of their situations is differ-ent depending on age, personal interests, and availability of both opportunity and resources. There is no cookbook on being a parent and each student both in school and at home have their own uniqueness that requires differ-ent choices. The key is that when choices are made then responsibility and commitment to those choices must also be accepted.
Your support, encouragement, guidance, and common sense can make a tremendous impact on your student’s success with achieving a balance in their busy lives. Achieving a balance is the goal, but remembering that excelling in the classroom must remain the top priority. The balancing act between academic extracurricular activities is a never-ending challenge for our students, but is also a critical life skill that each and every one of our students will need and use throughout their lives. As always, it is critical to remember that it is a team effort with home and school communications being the key to success for your student in the classroom. Please know that your school is ready to help you and your student through times when critical commitments can impact your student and family. Communication is vital so that we work together as a team to develop a plan to get a balance back into your student’s daily routine.

Holidays in a Flash! Quick Décor for Busy HomesWell, the holidays are here, and whether you celebrate Christmas,
Hanukkah, the winter solstice or just some time off work, it’s often such a busy time of year that decorating can seem more of a chore than one of the joys of the season. We celebrate a small kind of Christmas at our home since we do not have visiting family, which means elaborate meals more than anything else. Yet it still seems that by the time I hang décor it’s already time to ring in the New Year. This holiday season, I’ve vowed to take a path of least resistance when it comes to decking out the halls, and you can too.
It’s essential to make things easier, so start by simplifying. First, only pick main rooms for adornment. Second, choose a specific theme. Third, limit the color palette to three hues or less. Finally, trim out main focal points in a room such as tables, mantles and doors.
Your family and guests will spend most occasions in the main living spaces of your home, which often include the family, living and dining rooms, kitchen, and loft or game areas. Just bedecking three of these settings can go a long way towards creating a more jovial environment. It’s possible to have one room with a large garlanded tree and leave it at that; or perhaps having smaller potted “live” trees (these run on the small side, and stay in a pot so that they can be replanted in January) in multiple rooms is a better fit for your lifestyle. Keeping embellish-ments to where they are most often seen is the best way to get full use of them during the few brief weeks they’re displayed.
Committing to one specific theme is a quick way to keep décor unified, especially when shopping for trimmings. There is an abundance of choice out there that will personalize even the most standard of houses; it can be a bit overwhelming when standing in the Christmas aisle. Having a clear theme will help weed out entire shelves of brightly-colored baubles. Condensing the color scheme to three hues or less will further cut down on wasted time picking between decorative elements. One handy tip is to pick a metallic with two colors: silver, white and blue is a nod to mid-cen-tury mod design, whereas gold, wine and hunter green evoke a classic country sentiment. If it’s possible, establish a theme and color scheme that can be your family’s signature for years to come. This allows for the re-use of decorations, thus saving further decision-making headaches down the road.
If your idea of holiday fun includes not having to re-arrange your furni-ture, then opt for the simple solution of adorning otherwise open spaces. The center of a table (such as a dining, coffee or side table, even a kitchen island,) is a natural place to start with temporary seasonal arrangements. It’s often pos-sible to re-use any current vases or containers in a more festive way by swap-ping out their contents for glass-blown ornaments or other traditional tree trimmings. Many homes in San Elijo Hills have one (or more!) mantle; these are the most common places to hang stockings, topiaries or ribbon-entwined boughs. Perhaps the easiest option of all is festooning the doorways of a home, since most doors are left undecorated during the year. Both inner and exterior doors are a natural for short-term displays; wreaths, advent calendars, holiday banners and hung greenery are a striking yet easy way to add holiday sparkle to any space.
There are a few other tricks that can be up your sleeve to make the whole holiday decorative process almost painless. In our home, we have artwork that is hung permanently on our walls (translation: we’re not all that inspired to move it!); we also have an open-concept lower floor where wall space is at a premium. In fact, we don’t have any spare square footage for passing seasonal fancies at all! Fortunately, trends and technology have converged to create better wall clings that aren’t as stuffy and limited in design as they used to be. One thing I’ve been doing is putting temporary seasonal vinyl cling designs on select windows and mirrors. These are great for several reasons: they are easy to put on and pull off; they’re re-usable, designs are much hipper, and they don’t cost a lot in terms of money or commitment. They can even be used in a bathroom to perk things up – which is especially fun for kids. Perfect!
The sense of smell has the power to provoke strong emotions in all of us, so why not light some scented candles to bring warmth to your environs? If you truly want guests to feel welcome, whip up a batch of freshly-baked pastries. Cooking in the kitchen is a particularly delicious way to evoke some cheerful ambiance. And don’t forget that fresh greenery is another way to naturally perfume the air this time of year.
As a final point, let’s talk holiday lights. If you don’t like hanging up and down strings of electrical wire from rickety ladders, either pay someone to do this, or cheat the way many pragmatic homeowners have been over the past few years. Instead of putting out exterior lights, source a great potted fixture – or even your official holiday tree – and position it near a window that can be seen from the front of your home. That way, both you and your neighbors can enjoy the softly-glowing view. Now, not all homes in our neighborhood are designed to make this possible, but many are.
When all is said and done, the secret to sensational seasonal embellish-ment is to not take all season to figure it out! Streamline your goals and pick your battles; less is more doesn’t just apply to good taste, but good use of time, too. Happy Holidays!

what is the medifast/take shape for life weight loss Program? g.h.
the take shape for life program is based on a multidisciplinary and medically proven approach to weight reduction and weight maintenance. the weight loss component consists of a balanced meal replacement product called medifast, which along with appro-priate medical management is a very effective and safe method of dramatic weight reduction. more importantly, our program emphasis is on maintaining weight loss through overall lifestyle change. these changes would require nutritional and emotional eating awareness facilitated through our weekly group counseling sessions and coor-dinated by a licensed nutritionist at no cost to our patients. exercise is also emphasized and is an integral part of any wellness program. further information regarding our weight management program can be obtained through your graybill provider.

what is the difference between Portion size and serving size? g.t.
portion size is the amount of a single food item served in a single eating occasion, such as a meal or a snack. many people confuse por-tion size with serving size, which is a standardized unit of measuring foods—for example, a cup or ounce—used in dietary guidance, such as the Dietary guidelines for americans. portion size is the amount offered to a person in a restaurant, the amount offered in the pack-aging of prepared foods, or the amount a person chooses to put on his or her plate. for example, bagels or muffins are often sold in sizes that constitute at least 2 servings, but consumers often eat the whole thing, thinking that they have eaten 1 serving. they do not realize that they have selected a large portion size that was more than 1 serving.
Kim ruby, bs, Cn, john scrivano, pa-C, graybill weight management program, www.pph.org
what is the most accurate method to measure the right amount to eat? t.r.
the most accurate way to monitor portion sizes is to measure out food with a scale and measuring cup. however, this is not realistic at many eating occasions. You can use this handy serving size wallet card from nhlbi (http://hin.nhlbi.nih.gov/portion/servingcard7.pdf) to help estimate the right amount to eat. and you can take the nhlbi Visual reality quiz (http://nhlbisupport.com/chd1/visualreality/visual-reality.htm) to test your skills at estimating serving size. short-term studies show that people eat more when they are confronted with larger portion sizes.

The holiday season is always a hectic time of year, so you’re probably pretty busy. But it is important to take some time now to evaluate year-end
financial moves that may be beneficial in preparing for your financial future.Which year-end moves should you consider? You will want to talk to your
financial advisor and tax and legal professionals first, but here are a few ideas to get you started:• Boost your IRA contributions. You have until April 15, 2011, to fully fund
your IRA for the 2010 tax year, but the sooner you finish with your 2010 contribution, the quicker you can get started on your 2011 contribution — and the earlier in the year you fund your IRA, the more time you give your account the opportunity to grow.
• Put more money into college savings plans. If you have a 529 college sav-ings plan for yourself or someone else, consider putting more money in before year-end. You can gift up to $13,000 ($26,000 per married couple) per person per year without gift tax consequences. However, this must be accomplished by year-end.
• Be generous. If you’ve been thinking of making charitable gifts, don’t put them off any longer. As long as you make a donation to a qualified charity before the year ends, you can claim a deduction on your 2010 tax return. For example, if you donate $100 to a charitable group [either a religious organi-zation or one that has received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service], and you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $100 (with a tax benefit of $25) when you file your taxes for 2010, providing, of course, that you itemize. If you donate stocks or other types of assets, you may also be
able to save on capital gains taxes, because it will be the charity, not you, that eventually sells those assets.
• Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you pur-chased them, you can sell them before 2010 ends and then use the tax loss to offset capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. If your loss is greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. However, if you then want to repurchase the investment you sold, you’ll need to wait at least 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules.
• Take capital gains. In 2011, the tax rate on long-term capital gains is scheduled to increase to 20% for most investors, up from the 15% rate it’s been the last several years. If you have stocks or other appreciated assets that you were think-ing of selling in the near future, you might want to do so before the year comes to a close. However, it’s generally not a good idea to make investment decisions strictly because of tax consequences. If your appreciated assets are still a part of your overall financial strategy, you may be better off holding them for the long term, even with a higher capital gains rate.
Considering these moves before the year ends might help you better prepare to address your financial picture in 2011.

You may see a child throwing a temper tantrum in the grocery store or a youngster pushing another child on the playground. Many of us are quick to judge their parents for those ‘misbehaviors’.
Likewise, many parents can relate to the feeling of being judged for their child’s behavior. However, we rarely know what’s really going on behind the scenes for that individual family.
I work with parents who have felt like they were being judged because of the dirty looks or smirks they have received when their child acts out. What those onlookers don’t know is that although their child may look typical, their children process the world very differently.
These are parents who have children on the autism spectrum. Autism is a complex disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, interactive flexibility, and leisure or play activities.
Autism also comes with many sensory system abnormalities. Some experience touch to be excruciating while others crave deep sensory input (which is why some children may bang their heads against a wall). Some have internal allergic reactions from the perfume on the woman at the checkout stand. Others can’t focus with the blaring sounds and flickering shadows from fluorescent lighting. Often, these children can hear conver-sations two rooms away while they are rocking back and forth in a corner, running in circles around the room, or lining up objects while tapping them on the floor. Could you imagine what it would be like to experience the world in this way?
Children on the autism spectrum gravitate toward predictability because their world is so unpredictable. This is why they tend to prefer objects over people. Those objects never change and they get to manipulate those objects, as long as people don’t interfere. It must feel so good to know you can rely on those objects to always be the same. The more they get to focus on those objects (e.g. lining up characters, watching the same DVD over and over, placing golf balls on the window sill, etc.) the less the unpredict-ability of the world affects them. Going into their own world is a protective mechanism they have created to survive in this different world.
As the founder of Autistically Inclined, a child-centered, play-based, highly customized program that supports wellness for the entire family, I have had the honor of getting to work with nearly 600 different families over the past 12 years. We are excited to be opening a playroom in San Elijo Hills this fall. As a way to connect with the community, we want to
share some insight that will bring the autism world closer together with the community as a whole.
In our playrooms, we create a safe environment that is conducive to making ourselves as predictable as possible. This helps the kids want to connect with us more. We provide them with a place where the sensory stimulation isn’t overwhelming and they get to hear the word YES instead of no. This is a truly unique experience for them. Our goal is to help parents make human interaction more predictable for our kids in their day-to-day lives, which bridges the gap between our world and theirs. Once we become predictable, the kids start to open themselves up to interaction and we slowly introduce variation to help ease them into typical relationships with people.
That child throwing a tantrum in the snack isle may be completely over stimulated by the lights, sounds, colors, and unpredictability of the store and he may not have the tools to communicate his needs effectively. The youngster who pushes a child on the playground may actually be trying to play in his own way.
So next time you see a child acting out, whether they have autism or not, take a moment of compassion and remember that you may not under-stand the whole picture. Offer a comforting smile to their caregiver. It could make a world of difference for the parent who deals with this on a regular basis.

business spotlight
In the late 1930’s, the site that is now home to Santa Fe Christian Schools was Las Flores Inn. Because of its favorable proxim-ity to the race track (and the fact that it had indoor plumbing), Las Flores Inn affectionately hosted many celebrities and jockeys. During the 60’s and 70’s, the Inn became a boys’ board-ing school and in the late 70’s Christian High School in El Cajon opened its North County campus there.
Over the next 30 years, Santa Fe Christian Schools blossomed and flourished into what is now an award-winning “Best Private Christian School in San Diego County.” Although the facility is technically one school, it’s divided into four separate levels of academics – the preschool, the lower school (K-5), the middle school (6-8), and the upper school (9-12). SFC holds the highest accreditation possible under two organizations - Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Their mission is to “partner with Christian parents within a Bible-based community, in order to disciple students to embrace biblical truth, strive for academic excellence, and model Christ-like leadership to influence their homes, churches, and communities for Christ.”
SFC boasts small class sizes and big opportunities! The lower school offers the younger students interactive science labs and computer labs, art studios, music programs and more. Moving along to the middle school, your
child not only has access to four Honors classes, but can also select between digital production, yearbook, student government, as well as Spanish and French classes. They also have over 20 athletic teams in which to get involved, including basketball, football, volleyball, soccer and more. Students enrolled in the upper school can choose from over 40 athletic teams, nine Honors classes, 13 AP classes, international mis-sion trips, class retreats, art, drama, French, equestrian clubs and so much more.
Small class sizes allow the highly qualified, pas-sionate teachers to focus on each student’s needs - challenging and inspiring individual development.
Convenient bus transportation is available throughout San Diego County. SFC has affordable tuition plans as well as scholarship opportunities. The Class of 2010 (97 students) received 423 college acceptances and was awarded over $10 million in college scholarships. An astounding 100% of the students continue on to college. The campus itself is a sprawling 17 ½ acres located in beautiful Solana Beach. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art science, art and computer labs, and impressive athletic facilities, all in a safe and secure closed campus.
You can visit the school by attending one of their Open Houses: Wednesdays – December 8, January 12 or February 9 from 10 am to noon. If you can’t attend one of the Open Houses, you can visit their comprehensive website at www.sfcs.net. You can also call the admissions office at 858-755-8900 or email them at [email protected].
