Dear Friends,

Today throughout the United States, we celebrate Father’s Day, a

civil holiday, rightly instituted to honor fatherhood. Originating in 1910 in

Washington state, and later winning US presidential approbation in 1924

and finally becoming a national holiday in 1966, Father’s Day is celebrated

on the third Sunday in June. We take this opportunity to celebrate all fa-

thers, whose dignity and vocation, instituted by God, for the foundation and flourishing of the family,

cannot be overemphasized. Let us pray especially for our fathers this week that God will continue to

bless them with health, happiness, and holiness. May God grant eternal life to all our fathers, like

mine, who have already gone back to God. Who but the Divine One Who has the greatest mind and

greatest heart could have created fathers and mothers? At all the Masses this weekend, we offer a spe-

cial blessing upon all our fathers and we also offer each father a Holy Card with a Prayer. We have a

blessing beyond words in the gift of our fathers! Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers!

We are happy to welcome back, Fr Brandan Artman, a graduate of Saint Agnes School and

former parishioner. Fr Artman will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Agnes Church on Sun-

day, June 17th at 10:30 AM Mass. All are welcome to celebrate with Fr Brandon and all are welcome

to a light reception immediately following the Mass. Congratulations, Fr Brandon, and best wishes!

We welcome Sr Mary James, IHM, who will be in residence at St Agnes Convent and will serve at

Bishop Shanahan. Welcome Sr Mary James!

During the summer, I hope you will make new friends. So, I recommend that you read the

lives of the saints. In addition to being a source of information and inspiration, the saints whose lives

are fascinating are also powerful intercessors willing to help us. We need more saintly friends. During

the summer, I hope you will have some deep and meaningful conversations. So, I recommend that

you pray the Rosary daily. Our Blessed Mother loves us and she wants to help us. As we pray the ro-

sary and mediate upon these sacred mysteries, let’s allow her maternal love to transform our hearts.

During the summer, I hope you can get away. So, I recommend that you consider visiting some

of our local Catholic Shrines. Here in Philadelphia we have four special places of pilgrimage: (1) the

Shrine of St. John Neumann at St Peter’s Church, Philadelphia; (2) the Shrine of the Miraculous Med-

al, Germantown; (3) the Shrine of Saint Rita, South Philadelphia, and (4) the Shrine of Our Lady of

Czestochowa, Doylestown.

Finally, save the date (Saturday evening, September 29, 2018) for our Parish Jubilee Dinner

Dance. More details to follow.

Have a blessed week ahead! More good things to come!

Yours devotedly in Christ Jesus,

Rev. William G. Donovan, PhD, Pastor

RENEWAL OF WEDDING VOWS

June Celebration!

Congratulations to the following couples on renewing their wedding

vows last weekend at the 10:30AM Mass. This was our first annual

Mass for married couples. May you have many more years of a loving

relationship in the Lord! During the liturgy, we prayed for all married

couples in are parish. Special congratulations to:

Chris & Kate Feryo - 25 Years

Bill & Noel Dolan - 25 Years

Gordon and Teresa Hirs - 26 years

Kevin & Barbara Kirby – 45th Anniversary

Maury & Trudy Caron - 50 Years

Dave & Ellen O'Connell - 53 Years

Charles & Kathleen Johnson – 55th Anniversary

Lord God and Creator, we bless and praise your name.

In the beginning you made man and woman,

so that they might enter a communion of life and love.

You likewise blessed the union of these couples,

so that they might reflect the union of Christ

with his Church:

look with kindness on them today.

Amid the joys and struggles of their life

you have preserved the union between them;

renew their marriage covenant,

increase your love in them,

and strengthen their bond of peace, so that

they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Happy Father's Day to those men who have sacrificed so much for our families and our

communities. We entrust all Fathers to the patronage of St. Joseph, guider and protector of

the Holy Family. Thank you for your self-sacrificing courageous love which has given us

so much. Happy Father's Day!

O glorious St. Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, to you we raise our hearts and

hands to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the benign heart of Jesus all

the helps and graces necessary for our spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly for the grace of a happy

death and the special favor we now request. (mention your request)

O guardian of the Word Incarnate, we feel animated with confidence that your prayers in our behalf will be

graciously heard before the throne of God.

O glorious St. Joseph, through the love you bear to Jesus Christ and for the glory of His name, hear our pray-

ers and obtain our petitions.

Amen.

Spiritual Enrichment

FATHER’S DAY

By Matt Robinson

Karol Woytyla lost his beloved mother at the tender

age of nine. Because of her tragic passing, young

Karol spent almost all of his time with his father,

even sharing the same bedroom at night. This future

Pope would recount that he would often wake up in

the middle of night and see the figure of his father

kneeling in prayer. The holy example of his father

taught this future saint what the essence of Father-

hood truly was and enabled him one day to be the

“Holy Father” to every person in the world.

Abbe Prevost, an 18th century French author and

novelist, said that the “heart of a father is the master-

piece of nature.” Truly so, the heart of the father is

one of the most beautiful gifts bestowed on creation

by the Heavenly Father. Perhaps what Abbe Prevost

failed to realize was that the heart of the natural fa-

ther is a masterpiece because it is a reflection of the

heart of the Heavenly Father. What a lofty and beau-

tiful task that is given to each father – to be a reflec-

tion of the love of God the Father.

This is accomplished first and foremost when the

father has a deep understanding of his own sonship

in the Heavenly Father. When he experiences the

paternal and caring love of God the Father, he can

pass this on to his own children that they might ex-

perience God through him. If the father understands

his identity first and foremost as a son of God, he

also understands that the best way for him to love his

children is by loving his wife. In caring, providing,

and respecting her, the children have their first

glimpse of love, a glimpse into the relationship of

Christ and His Church.

St. Joseph is the pa-

tron saint of fathers,

and so on this Fa-

ther’s Day we invoke

his intercession par-

ticularly for those

special men who

have answered or will answer the call to Christian

fatherhood. The love of the father is the first glimpse

into the heart of the Heavenly Father, thank you to

all those who have given so much as faithful fathers!

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Saint Thomas More (1478 –1535)

Feast Day: June 22

Born in London, Thomas studied at

Oxford, married and had four children. King Henry VIII

took this brilliant lawyer into his service in 1518, knight-

ed him and named him lord chancellor. But Thomas stood

up to the king when the king acted immorally. In 1534,

Thomas was arrested when he refused to abandon his

Catholic faith. Imprisoned for more than a year in the

Tower of London, he was convicted of treason and be-

headed. Thomas’ famous last words were, ‘that he died

the King’s good servant but God’s first.” He then knelt

down on the scaffold platform and recited the Miserere

from Psalm 51.

In the year 2000, in fact, Pope John Paul II

named him patron of political leaders. The supreme diplo-

mat and counselor, he did not compromise his own moral

values in order to please the king, knowing that true alle-

giance to authority is not blind acceptance of everything

that authority wants.

Saint Thomas More, pray for us!

The Peter's Pence Collection derives its name from

landowners as financial support for the Pope. To-

day, the Peter's Pence Collection supports the Pope's

philanthropy by giving the Holy Father the means to

provide emergency assistance throughout the world
