My soul's deepest desire Hallelujah You are Savior. Hallelujah: You are Savior! You are Savior!

Confession and Absolution

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C Amen.

Introit

P I am the good shepherd.

C I know my own and my own know me, and I lay down my life

for the sheep.

P Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; C let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

P Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

C let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

P For the LORD is a great God,

C and a great King above all gods.

P Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

C let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

P For he is our God,

C and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P I am the good shepherd.

C I know my own and my own know me, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Kyrie

P In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C Amen.

Hymn: “The King of Love My Shepherd Is”

5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight;

Thine unction grace bestoweth; And, oh, what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth!

6 And so through all the length of days

Thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise Within Thy house forever!

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray. Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus

Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Lamentations 1:1, 12, 21-22, 3:19-29, 5:21

How lonely sits the city that was full of people! How like a widow has she become, she who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave. Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was brought upon me, which the LORD inflicted on the day of his fierce anger.

“They heard my groaning, yet there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. You have brought[b] the day you announced; now let them be as I am. 22 “Let all their evildoing come before you, and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my groans are many, and my heart is faint.” Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! 20 My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. 21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;[a] his mercies never come to an end;

23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28 Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him; 29 let him put his mouth in the dust— there may yet be hope; Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may be restored! Renew our days as of old—

P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

Song “I Lift My Hands” Be still, there is a healer His love is deeper than the sea His mercy, it is unfailing His arms are a fortress for the weak Let faith arise, Let faith arise I lift my hands to believe again You are my refuge, You are my strength As I pour out my heart, these things I remember You are faithful, God, forever Be still, there is a river That flows from Calvary's tree A fountain for the thirsty Pure grace that washes over me

Epistle 1 Peter 2:19-25

19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

May Memory Verse “ And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.”

Ezekiel 36:26

Alleluia and Verse

Holy Gospel John 10:1-10

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the tenth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church Time of Offering Hymn “The Lord’s My Shepherd Leading Me”

1. The Lord’s my Shepherd leading me, to pastures newly green, Deep flow the waters of His care His mercies unforeseen. He loves me so, He leads me to His pastures gently green.

2. My hungry soul He fills again with manna from above. He sets my footsteps right again, in pathways of His love. For His name’s sake He nurtures me with manna from above.

3. Even within the vale of death I feel no threatening chill. His rod and staff protecting me, His love beside me still. His guardian love protecting me, I fear no threat of ill.

4. How He confounds my enemies by richly blessing me. His cup of

promise overflows with generosity. Anointing me His chosen one, He richly blesses me.

5. I take my stand forevermore, within my Shepherd’s fold. Secure in His forgiving love, How gently strong His hold. He loves me so He leads me to, His blessings rich and bold.

CONNECT… May 3, 2020

We’ve now journeyed into a strange and different time. Yes, our health pandemic and consequent quarantine do apply, but I was talking about reading Ezekiel. The first prophet to stretch into and out of exile. Ezekiel begins to employ what we would consider visions that seem strange, fantastic, and even bizarre. Right away, he beholds a stormy wind and a flashing fire and four living creatures. The glory of the LORD comes in to view – and we can almost tell Ezekiel is having trouble putting what his eyes see into words. Reading onward, we might have trouble putting it into ours too! Two things become clear: First, God is beyond our imagination – He’s bigger than us. Ezekiel sees someone more powerful, awesome, mighty, strange, and out-of-this-world than anyone else – someone who we need to take seriously. Second, this undeniable God surrounds Himself in His covenant – He promises to work for us: and there was brightness around him, like the appearance of the bow in the cloud on the day of rain (v. 27b-28a). That would be a rainbow! Like the rainbow given to Noah and all humanity since the flood. There is no cataclysmic event, no personal tragedy, no colossal struggle that God has not promised to provide in and produced in overcoming. That’s assurance for us today – our God is bigger than us, and He

has promised to work for us!

God’s Peace,

Stewardship Corner:

1 Peter 2:21 – “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” Our heavenly Father wants us to grow into the image of His Son, to follow in His steps. Jesus suffered for us not only to redeem us, but also to show us what love looks like – to leave us an example of self-giving, sacrificial generosity. “Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow His example pure.”
