DJ SMALLZBy Knowa Logic “The Interviewer”

BET Weekend in Atlanta was Amazing this year. The city was packed from corner to corner with celebrities like Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Fabulous, P Diddy and many more. There were parties everywhere. I ran into The world famous DJ

Smallz at D Woods from Danity Kane listening party at one of the ATL’s premier Studio.

So DJ Smallz let my readers know who inspired you to become a DJ and how did it happen? I would say DJ Clue inspired me. The way I got started was doing demos to convince nightclub owners to let me spin in the club. I was young so I needed to find a way to get their attention so and that’s how the first Southern Smoke mix tape. It was passes around from city to city then it took off. One of the reasons I think it took off is because southern hip hop was just starting to get national attention and my mix tapes feature what I felt were the hottest hits. My fist major host was artist Rated R from Tampa Florida.

I hear a lot of people speak of the phenomenon of the Soulja Boys online movement but in my mind you were one of the first DJs I know who blast your presence all over the net. What do think about that? I’m a really young cat so I always try to do things different from most DJs. I felt Internet technology could be useful to someone like me in the music industry when other didn’t. I was from a small town in south Florida, young and didn’t have the money or means to fly to Atlanta or New York to network so I used the Net as my world. Then when I got the money to travel I met people face to face. So I was one of the first to do it and I’m still using it but now I’m ahead on some things.

Which CD would you say got you out there the most? I would say the most popular one is Southern Smoke #25 hosted by Pimp C. I was the 1st DJ he did a mix cd when he got out of jail. That was big because he was gone for so long that a lot of DJs wanted that chance and I was privileged. I have a very good relationship with the whole UGK family. I also did his last official mix cd too. But what really got people to pay attention to me was #6 hosted by Uncle Luke about 5 yrs. Ago.

Are there any artist out there you haven’t had a chance to work with but would like to? Yea! Andre 3000! I’m waiting for you to call my phone or hit me on my email. I’ve done a couple of projects with Big Boi but Andre is my favorite lyricist not just in the south but in hip hop period. I think it would be crazy to work with him.

So where can the people keep updated on what DJ Smallz is up to? Check out the website www.djsmallz.com, www.fearfactormusic.com or Fear Factor TV

T he name isn’t the only interesting thing about Atlanta hitmaker Xavier “Zaytoven” Dotson. He hijacked his moniker from pianist Ludwig

van Beethoven because both were born in Germany and they both mastered the art of tickling the ivory keys at a young age, but also because both aligned themselves with those that could help propel their careers forward. For Beethoven, it was the dignitar-ies of Vienna, for Zaytoven it was Gucci Mane, king of the streets of east Atlanta. A barber by trade, the pro-ducer met the street poet while he was cutting hair at a local shop. “He had a nephew he was trying to get into the game but he and I just had chemistry when we would go into the studio,” recalls Zaytoven. “And we both had this hunger to be the best at what we did, so our work ethic was crazy.”

Now with the buzzed about Usher single “Papers” and Young Jeezy’s blazing new joint “Trap or Die 2” added on to his long list of production credits, the Bay area transplant is at the helm of crafting the new sound in music for Atlanta and beyond. He has proven that he can effortlessly transition from R&B to Rap, which is a true testament of his remarkable talent.

The multi-layered genius exploded onto the south-ern music scene in 2005 as the architect of Gucci Mane’s sound. The duo made their mark with the hood anthem “So Icey” featuring Young Jeezy, which peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. The Zaytoven-Gucci team went on to score a number of hits together, including “Bricks”, “Stoopid,” ”First Day Out,” “I’m A Dog,” and “Shirt Off,” with Zaytoven serv-ing as Executive Producer of the album Hard To Kill. In addition to his mega-success with Gucci Mane, Usher and Young Jeezy, Zaytoven has had the streets

on fire crafting hits for Gorilla Zoe (“What It Is”), OJ Da Juiceman (“Make The Trap Say Aye”, “I’m Gettin’ Money”), Yung Ralph (“About A Chick,” “I Bought That”) and Shop Boyz (“Ball”, “Up Thru There”).

While he wears many hats, he wears them all well, constantly re-inventing himself and his sound to become a crucial force in the entertainment indus-try. In addition to making the clubs and traps say “aye”, Zaytoven is co-owner of First Class Barber Shop in Stonecrest Mall in Lithonia, Georgia with plans for expansion. Additionally, he serves as the organist at his church where he attends choir rehearsal and Bible study faithfully every Wednesday. “Church and family comes first before everything. I couldn’t do what I do now if it wasn’t for the church. That’s where I learned to play everything the piano, organ and drums, so whenever my church needs me I’m there. Same for my family; they’re always number one.”

Zaytoven is on a quest to expand his boundaries while simultaneously taking the traditional elements of his church heritage to create a distinct sound that continuously provides him with inspiration. With placements on Brandon and Brian Casey of the Grammy winning R&B quartet Jagged Edge and Plies new albums respectively, Zaytoven counterbalances his marriage to Hip-Hop with his love affair for R&B and Soul music. And unlike the many trends in music that are ushered in just as quickly as they leave, Zaytoven’s artistry and creativity are timeless, which in addition to longevity, is what he consistently strives for.

Well ya'll know this is yo boy Charlie Jangle! Hell, FlyerPromoNow don't want me to introduce my damn self! They say

I'm a fool. Guess what America? They might just be right. But anyway, they need to get used to it because I'm a man that's been around the world and YI YI YI!!!! And ya'll know Charlie Jangle damn sho ain't afraid to speak his mind and talk about whatever ya'll wanna talk about. Now I can dig that like hot butta on burnt toast!!!

Now let's get straight to the business. Let's talk about how to handle doing business with a celebrity.

*Self check #1

When you meet a celebrity and he or she gives you their contact info or phone number for business, keep it calm and cool no matter how excited you are. Give them a call the

following business day and if you get their voice mail, kindly and politely leave them a message reminding them of who you are and the nature of your business. Wait one to two days for a call back or text message. Okay, I know it has been two days and still no response. So what you gonna do is try it one more time. This time, I want you to make sure you leave a message when the voice mail comes on and if you don't receive a call back within one day, don't continue to blow the damn phone up. Stop!!!! This is when you get the message he or she (the celebrity) does not want to f**k with you.

*Self Check#2

When you see a celebrity out enjoying his or herself, don't run up in their face or personal space talking about all the s**t you're doing or can do. I mean the whole time they're calling you a Big Ass Dummy or Boo-Boo the Fool. What they're really saying in their minds is, “Hey Idiot!” or “Man, just step the hell off! Can't you see now is really not the time? I'm chillin' like a villain.” So do yourself a favor in this situation: ask for the f**king contact person from the very beginning and exchange contact information about the nature of your business.

Man, ya'll let ya boy Charlie Jangle know watcha think about this.

Duct Tape Entertainment is presently the fastest growing label in Atlanta, Ga. The radio success of (CEO) Big Bank Blacks hit single “Try

It Out” featuring Kandi from “The Real House Wives of Atlanta” is proof that Duct Tape Ent. means business. Good music and heavy promotions has recently landed DTE joint-venture deals with both Atlantic and Def Jamz Records. I had a chance to sit with Black and discuss the label’s early stages and future goals.

HOW DID DUCT TAPE ENT. GET STARTED?Well, while Alley Boy was locked up, the idea for

the label came from Mike, Veli-Sosa, Ricardo and myself. We were already known in the streets before the music. The biggest names in the city have known us for years because of our grind. Most of us are from the Eastside and Ricardo is from the Westside. We’re all respected in our area, so us coming together pulled all sides together.

Alley Boy was doing his thing before we formed the label, but everybody wasn’t catching on. Alley is very lyrical and some people couldn’t tune into his true talent. You may be familiar with his street anthems “Label It Gutta”, “Look at My Charm” and “Dis Flip.”

I KNOW YOU’RE THE CEO OF THE LABEL BUT DID YOU EVER HAVE IT IN YOUR MIND TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

I didn’t plan to be an artist it just happened. I dropped the song “Try It Out” featuring Kandi while Alley was away. I wanted to do a free Alley Boy movement whenever I was on stage. I recorded the song fi rst at Kandi’s house and she loved it so much that a friend suggested featuring her on it. It was cool with me because we’ve been friends for a while and I respect her talent, so we hit Patch Werk Studio and made history. We represented and the people responded.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DUCT TAPE ENTERTAINMENT? Well, we got about 5 major deals on the table. Alley

Boy just signed with Atlantic Records with no BDS spins or sound scans and that’s a 50/50 deal with Duct Tape Entertainment. My single is #72 on Billboard Top 100 right now as we speak and that’s with no deal! We go hard on promotions wherever we at. Our other artists on Duct Tape are Trouble, Da Underdog and Veli-Sosa, all of them are representing Eastside Zone 6. Edgewood has claimed everything from Conyers to Kirkwood as Zone 6 too.

BLACK, LET ME ASK YOU THIS. YOU SEEM TO CATER TO THE LADIES IN YOUR SONGS, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COME OUT ON THE RAP AND R&B ANGLE?

On the music tip, I wanted to come a little diff erent. I just released a mix tape called “The Demo Tape” with 6 songs for the streets and the ladies cause ain’t no real n___as putting songs out for them. There’s no competition in this lane.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY FEATURES FROM ANY MAJOR ATLANTA ARTISTS?

We’ve had a couple of guys holla at us, but right now we feel we need to focus on our squad and that may become a distraction at this point in the game. Right now I’m trying to pave the way for our families and continue to give the streets that real s__t they know us for.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?Yea, I want to say this was one if not my best

interview so far, and I appreciate the love y’all showing me. Shots out to Jade and Show Biz. Also, free Lil Trouble, Charles and RIP to those who have died in the projects in Atlanta and to the fans; you can reach me on www.myspace.com/blackdte and www.facebook.com/blackdte.

FLYERPROMONOW presents

Atl anta, you have just entered the Drama-Free Zone–NO HATERS ALLOWED! Check in with me biweekly, here at Flyer Promo Now

Atlanta, to get my top fi ve countdown of the most positive and inspiring current news in the entertainment industry. Here at the Drama-Free Zone, we check the negative press at the door and give props to those deserving of it.

On September 8th, Supermodel Tyra Banks declared the day National Real Hair Day, as she revealed to the world her weave-free hair. No disrespect to Ms. Banks, but many celebrities have been rocking their “real” hair and empowering women since… like forever. So to recognize the ladies who have been encouraging us to love ourselves the way God made us, this issue we’re counting down my picks for the top fi ve all-natural (no weaves or relaxers) entertainers. Let’s start the countdown…

#5 Toni Morrison. The 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature

Winner and 1988 Pulitzer Prize Winner, Toni Morrison, is best known for her abstract and highly intellectual written work. Her most infamous novels include “The Bluest Eye,” “Jazz,” “Tar Baby,” and the novel-turned-movie “Beloved.” Beyond the colorful stories is a university professor who looks fabulous with her natural, regal, gray locs. (Photo: bet.com)

#4 Jill Scott. Songstress and Actress, Jill Scott, wears fun natural hair styles as if her very life depended on it. Unafraid

to fl aunt her hair in any stage, we’ve witnessed Jill in everything from a TWA (Teeny Weenie Afro) to a humongous, wild ‘fro. And although we love her soulful music and tantalizing lyrics, most of us can agree that we are on

pins and needles waiting to see her superb acting skills if HBO unveils another season of the #1 Ladies Detective Agency. (Photo: photobucket.com)

#3 Lauryn Hill. Although Lauryn Hill was not the fi rst mainstream

celebrity to wear locs, she defi nitely can be credited with helping to make them trendy and popular. Following in the footsteps of other well known black entertainers such as Bob Marley

and Whoopi Goldberg, Lauryn showed the world that “dreadlocked” hair is another fantastic way to wear our hair. However, way before Lauryn strutted her shoulder length locs during the release of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” or her funky post-loc natural styles more recently, she was spotted in the fi rst Fuguees album’s video, “Nappy Roots,” sporting a short and savvy natural do. (Photo: wordpress.com)

#2 Angela Davis. Angela Davis and the afro are synonymous. If you don’t believe me, walk down the street with a big

‘fro; eventually someone will refer to you as Angela Davis. Angela was made famous for her ties with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Black Panthers, and being on the FBI’s Most Wanted List for attempting to free George Jackson from a California courtroom. To date, she continues her eff orts as a writer, activist, and university professor, and yes, she is still true to her beautiful, natural hair. (Photo: bet.com)

And #1…India.Arie. Miss “I Am Not My Hair,” India.Arie has repeatedly reminded us

that our hair (or any other physical attribute) does not defi ne us. Breaking onto the scene in 2001 with the single “Video,” she immediately began teaching

us that we were beautiful, even if we did not meet the media’s criteria for model material. Four albums later, she continues to write and sing inspiring tunes that challenge women of all colors, sizes, and nationalities to embrace who they are and live life to the fullest. Thanks, India for the theme song. (Photo: indiaarie.com)

W hen it comes to therapy for the mind and soul, the first remedy I would recommend is comedy. On a Sunday night, after working

all day as usual, some friends and I attended the Uptown Comedy Corner to see Shawty the comedian performance. We had a great time! It started with a few drinks, good conversation, and a little reminiscing because the DJ transformed into the captain of a “Top 40” time machine playing all those favorite Old School Hits and he was in total control until the show started.

We had a great time! It started with drinks, good conversation, and a little reminiscing too because the DJ transformed into the captain of a Top 40 time machine. He was in total control until we landed. Shawty was the host and a strong team of laugh therapist backed him. The headliner was Marvin Dixon, who you know acted a fool.

When I asked Shawty how he got started as a comedian he stated, “When I was seventeen my girl cheated on me and I flipped out, I went crazy, and I mopped her ass all around the house (LOL). I caught a charge and had to go to boot camp and was put on

intense probation. My probation was military style, but after a while I started bucking rule doing all kind

of crazy/funny stuff. I had the staff and everyone cracking up during probation boot camp until they placed me on regular supervision.” After being able to pull that off and watching comic greats on TV, Shawty realized he was really funny and he decided to hit the stage. Since then, he’s been busy touring with comedians such as: BRUCE BRUCE, SHERYL UNDERWOOD,

CHRIS TUCKER, DL HUGHLEY, J. ANTHONY BROWN, EARTHQUAKE, and many other notable

comedians.

Shawty Shawty is also no stranger to the music industry. His cameo appearance on Ludacris’s latest album, Word of Mouf earned him platinum success. He has been showcased in numerous rap music videos such as CLIPSE “NEVER HEARD IT LIKE THIS”, produced by the Neptunes, Atlanta Rapper BONE CRUSHER’s #1 Billboard chart topping single “NEVA SCARED”, LIL’ JON & THE EASTSIDE BOYZ “GET LOW” & “I DON’T GIVE A…” including FIELD MOB’S “ALL I KNOW,” which all showcased the immense talent of this animated comedian.

Make sure you check out Shawty at Uptown Comedy Corner on Sundays. For more info on what Shawty got popin log on at www.myspace.com/shawtycomedian and www.youtube.com/officialshawtyshawty. Watch video interview at www.flyerpromoatl.blogspot.com.
