Menzies recently moved to a new yard and has been firing in the winners since, the latest coming as Creighton signed the docket at Park Paddocks, as she saddled Halcyon Days at Catterick to win the novices’ chase at 2.15pm.

The well-bred Marwa (Exceed And Excel) had a change of ownership, but will remain within the Rabbah Bloodstock organisation. She was offered as Lot 444 by Ed Dunlop, who trained her for Abdullah Saeed Al Naboodah and she was knocked down for 80,000gns to Jono Mills of Rabbah Bloodstock for Saeed Manana, who was standing with the agent and trainer James

in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes and Gr.1 1,000 Guineas. The further family includes the Champions Last Tycoon and Immortal Verse.

Shortly before, another offering from the Clarehaven draft also attacted plenty of interest as the high-class handicapper Von Blucher (Lot 382) realised 95,000gns, on a bid from Daniel Creighton of Salcey Forest Stud. He had seen off interest from Clive Cox and Chris Kellett to secure the 99-rated four-year-old son of Zoffany and said: “He has been bought for John Dance and he is going to Rebecca Menzies in the north as a dual purpose prospect. She is a good young trainer and deserves a good horse, so John is keen to support her.”

Tate. The team had seen off agents Cathy Grassick and Federico Barbarini to get the three-year-old and Mills said: “She is a beautifully-bred filly by Exceed And Excel and potentially she will race on.”

Bred by Litex Commerce, she was purchased here as a yearling for 250,000gns by John and Jake Warren. She is a half-sister to the Gr.2 Arkansas Derby winner and sire Sir Cherokee (Cherokee Run), the multiple Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 Go For Wand Handicap runner-up Miss Isella (Silver Charm) and the dual Listed scorer Guam Typhoon (Distorted Humor), as well as the Gr.3-placed Lady Linda (Torrential; dam of the Gr.1 Preis der Diana winner Penelopa).

Bringing good French form to the table, Dandyman Port (Lot 359) drew plenty of attention and will be heading to Ireland to join Tipperary-based trainer Des Donovan. Sitting in the seats to the left of the auctioneer with owner Andy Cosias, he went to 75,000gns to secure the three-year-old daughter of Dandy Man. Consigned by her trainer Eoghan O’Neill, who purchased her as a yearling, she won well on debut at Dieppe last June and was placed on her last two starts, each time behind Listed horses. O’Neill said: “She made a good price for the owners. I paid €17,000 for her as a yearling and she has won twenty thousand.”

Donovan said: “She will go back to Ireland, where hopefully she will get soft ground, with a bit of luck.”

Irish agent Bert Kerr, of Kerr and Co Ltd, was active during the day and picked up two of the choice lots, one inside the ring and one outside. He secured three-year-old George Boole (Art Connoisseur) privately for 60,000gns from John Murphy’s Highfort Stables and he went to 48,000gns for Flower Of Love (Lot 277).

Consigned as Lot 377, the entire three-year-old George Boole broke his maiden at Dundalk over seven furlongs in December and has been runner-up over a mile at the same venue twice since, gaining a rating of 80, and Kerr confirmed that he will be campaigned in Stakes races in central Europe.

It was a hundred lots earlier that he saw off Jamie Lloyd to secure the four-year-old Poet’s Voice filly Flower Of Love. Standing with the Champion Trainer from the Czech Republic, Frantisek Holcak, and owner Jiri Drag, he said: “She has been bought to go to the Czech Republic to race and long term to breed.”

A dual winner last year over ten and a half to twelve furlongs for Simon Crisford, she is rated 81 and is a half-sister to the dual Listed scorer and Gr.3-placed Pelerin (Shamardal) and the Listed-placed Masarah (Cape Cross). They are out of the Listed Severals Stakes-placed Fragrancy (Singspiel) and the further family includes the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile Stakes and Gr.1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes winner Hibaayeb.

Also consigned by Gosden’s Clarehaven Stables and coming in at 60,000gns was the three-year-old Galileo colt Vantage Point (Lot 386). The winner of a mile maiden at Southwell on his fifth start on the 30th January for Mrs F Hay, Mrs J Magnier, M Tabor and D Smith, he was knocked down to Richard Frisby Bloodstock. Frisby confirmed that he will stay in the UK for a Flat and then dual purpose campaign. Bred by Smithfield Inc, he is out of the Gr.1 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Adoration (Honor Grades).

Robin Sharp of Houghton Bloodstock purchased Kingston Kurrajong (Authorized) for Roger Kilby of Canisbay Bloodstock for 37,000gns. Consigned as Lot 373 by Andrew Balding’s Park House Stables, the gelded four-year-old is a two-time winner and is rated 89. Sharp said: “He is for a good fiend of mine, Roger Kilby of Canisbay Bloodstock, who is from Wimbledon and has a yard in Epsom. He is a nice sound horse and he goes on all three; good, soft and the all-weather.

“I bought Capricho for him, who won the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and I hope this will be a fun, sound horse for him.”

There was one daughter of Galileo on offer on the day and William Johnstone of Bellslea Stud, who also owns fifty per cent of Ayr Racecourse, secured the three-year-old for 48,000gns. Offered as Lot 388 as part of the popular Clarehaven draft, Lenoire was bred and raced, like the session-topper, by George Strawbridge, but was unplaced on three starts last year for Gosden. Johnstone did not confirm if she would race on, but said: “She is very well bred, but looks an immature three-year-old. I will put her out and give her time and we will see.” She is a half-sister to the multiple

“The obvious highlight of the sale was the 500,000 guineas paid for the outstanding race filly Easton Angel, another new record for this fixture, but the real feature of the sale has been the extraordinary depth to the trade in all sectors of the market and, as ever, the contribution made by overseas buyers from throughout Europe, the Gulf region, America and as far afield as Australia. More six-figure lots than ever before demonstrates the enduring global appeal of quality bloodstock, but it is equally important that sales of this nature attract buyers at all levels of the market and the sustained demand from start to finish has been just as gratifying as the individual highlights and the record returns.

“There is no doubt that the regular significant consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell play a major part in attracting such a diverse crowd of buyers and it is wonderful to see their confidence in Tattersalls so consistently rewarded. Equally pleasing has been the success of the Irish and French vendors who have supported the sale and we are delighted that our 251st year has made such a positive start.” Vikki Hancock

Listed winner and Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy-third Fencing (Street Cry), out of the Gr.1 Prix de Diane winner Latice (Inchinor), while the further family includes the Classic winner and sire Lawman.

At the conclusion of the sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented: “The Tattersalls February Sale has achieved phenomenal growth in recent years and the 2017 renewal has taken it to a new level. As recently as 2010, the turnover at the February Sale was less than a million guineas and the average price below 7,000 guineas. This year we extended the sale to two days for the first time and the turnover has soared to nearly six million guineas, more than double last year’s record level, the average has reached a new record of 16,944 guineas and even last year’s impressive clearance rate of 82% has jumped to 89%.

And now for something completely differentThe first running of the Gr.1 Pegasus World Cup turned out

both far better and far worse than organizers could reasonably have hoped when plans were laid for the $12

million race early last year. It was far better because, against all odds, the two best dirt

horses in the world showed up for the race. And not only that, it was a rematch of a highly competitive and hugely exciting Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic that had occurred a little less than three months earlier. It was far worse because, sadly, only one of the protagonists remembered his lines.

After Juddmonte Farm’s Arrogate beat Taylor Made Farm’s and Perry Martin’s California Chrome in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last November it seemed highly unlikely that Arrogate would take on California Chrome again in the chesnut’s previously announced last race at Gulfstream Park. Why should he? Arrogate had already proven he was the better horse, and defeat could sully his reputation and his place in racing history.

That reasoning, however, did not fully take into account the sporting spirit of Juddmonte’s owner Prince Khalid Abdullah, nor the aggressive confidence of Arrogate’s Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. Even when Arrogate’s training was interrupted by a wet winter at Santa Anita, causing him to miss his prep race, while California Chrome won contemptuously in his tuneup, Baffert persevered and, by his own description, was confident he had his horse “cherry ripe” on race day.

We will never know whether Baffert was right, even he said after the race that Arrogate got tired and needed the race. It didn’t matter. California Chrome was never travelling in the race and was a beaten horse fully a half-mile from the finish. He came out of his final start with fluid on a knee and slight lameness that probably indicates a chip that will be meaningless to his stud career that will begin in two weeks’ time at Taylor Made.

Perhaps the injury occurred in California Chrome’s first few frantic strides away from the gate. The two-time Horse of the Year had received the worst possible luck of the draw when he had drawn stall twelve in the twelve-horse field. In 18 previous cases of horses drawn twelve at nine furlongs since Gulfstream reconfigured its track, only one horse had won. That horse was Gr.1 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown against a vastly inferior field in the 2008 Gr.1 Florida Derby.

Despite California Chrome’s misfortunes, the first Pegasus World Cup has to be counted a huge success. The marquee names

drew an announced crowd of 16,653 to Gulfstream Park in January, despite the fact that the track charged each patron $100 for entry into the premises and $20 for each car parked in the parking lot. Normally both entry and parking are free.

Those extravagant terms were all part of an impressive effort to market the Pegasus World Cup as a prestige event unlike any other in thoroughbred racing. With rich events like the Gr.1 Dubai World Cup, Royal Ascot, Breeders’ Cup, Gr.1 Prix de ‘Arc de Triomphe, Gr.1 Melbourne Cup, Hong Kong international races, and the Gr.1 Japan Cup well established as events that attract international fields and enormous international prestige, Frank Stronach and his team had to do something as different as possible to attract attention in the deadest month on the racing calendar.

He accomplished that through the unique terms of the race, the $1 million entry fee, the revenue sharing, and an inventive, humorous marketing campaign. The horse trading that occurred to get a representative field to the race provided plenty of copy for the racing press over the last month. Even Juddmonte had to buy Coolmore’s spot in order for Arrogate to start in the race.

Terms were not, of course, announced, and it will be interesting to find out how the revenue sharing works out for the twelve stake-holders who each invested $1 million for a chance to run in the race. That ultimately will determine whether the first Pegasus World Cup will be, if not the last, then one of only a few, or, conversely, it is a viable concept going forward.

In a sense, the Pegasus World Cup harked back to racing’s origins when English aristocrats pitted their fastest steeds one on one against their rivals, putting up their own stake money as the only prize. The first Pegasus World Cup was not completely different from that, nor from today’s run of the mill Stakes races where owners pay entry fees and the racing association puts up additional money.

In the end, it was still all about who had the fastest horse.

It has been well documented that the last crop of four-time New Zealand Champion Sire O’Reilly are being offered this week, so it was a somewhat poignant moment when his last yearling left the ring. It was also fitting as Lot 1097, a smart bay from the draft of the Chittick family’s Waikato Stud at Matamata, departed as the top lot of the session for NZ$200,000, bound for the stables of local trainer Roger James. That NZ$200,000 would have the colt as the second dearest lot of the Select Sale.

The colt is the second foal of the Zabeel mare Toss Up, a maiden winner over 1600m at Matamata when trained by Graeme and Debbie Rogerson. Out of the Listed-placed Tale Of The Cat mare Heads Or Tales, herself a half-sister to Good Faith, winner of the Gr.1 Ellerslie Sires’ Produce Stakes, Toss Up comes from the family that gave us Daffodil, winner of a Gr.1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas and a Gr.1 Australian Oaks. Heads Or Tales and Daffodil’s dam, Spring, share the Shirley Heights mare Head Of The River as their dam. As for Toss Up, her first foal is an unraced three-year-old full-brother to yesterday’s top lot, named Super Tycoon, who resides in Singapore.

Post-sale James said of his new acquisition “There were only two colts I had earmarked as Derby types and he was at the top of that short list.”

Echoing the sentiments of many a local trainer this week, James commented on how difficult it has been to have pre-sale orders in place. “Because of the current situation with our domestic racing it’s been hard to attract owners and I’ve come with a significantly lower budget this year which has made it tough going.”

O’Reilly’s contribution to the local breed can not be overstated with Mark Chittick of Waikato Stud expressing how important the son of Last Tycoon was to his family’s farm. “O’Reilly’s responsible for where Waikato Stud stands in the market now and it’s a sad moment because he was part of the family. However, his legacy will continue on through his young stock, broodmares and his sire-sons with the likes of Shamexpress being leading first season sire at the Premier this year, and our own Sacred Falls, whose first yearlings will be sold next year.”

In a sale dominated by colts, two fillies have stood out. The first was Thursday’s Per Incanto, Grable filly, who would eventually top the Select Sale at NZ$300,000. The other was Lot 1065, a gorgeous grey filly out of Cambridge Stud, by Burgundy out of the Stravinsky mare Streaming. After some spirited bidding, it would be David Ellis of Te Akau Thoroughbreds that would win the battle, NZ$145,000 enough to see off the competition and for her to finish as the second dearest lot of the day.

SALES TALK continuedNEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK

LAST SON OF O’REILLY TOPS SELECT YEARLING SALE DAY THREEThe three-day New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale came to a close yesterday, and for plenty of vendors the end could not come quick enough, writes Glen Latham. Expectations leading into the week had been guarded, but in the end there would be disappointment, for while the international brigade were here to spend, the locals were not there to compete. The result saw more lots offered than 2016, but fewer sold, and declines in all the major indicators. The aggregate dropped 21.5% to NZ$20,679,500 taking the average south by 18% to finish at NZ$47,363, while the median, NZ$47,500 last year, remained constant at NZ$40,000 for the three days. The final clearance rate of 76% was the best it had been right through trading.

It is worth mentioning again that the 2016 Select Sale looks to have been the “perfect storm” that whipped prices up to unsustainable levels. By way of example, this year’s average and clearance were both slightly better than the 2015 numbers, and while one could have expected growth of at least a few per cent in the intervening period, it would have been unrealistic to imagine it could have kept pace with twelve months ago. Making adjustments for varying catalogue sizes, the aggregates for 2017 and 2015 were on a par while the median jumped from NZ$32,500 to NZ$40,000.

New Zealand Bloodstock Managing Director Andrew Seabrook laid the blame squarely with local economic conditions when he said “Our Flat domestic racing industry has had a disappointing effect on the Select Sale and the negative impact it is having is even more evident when looking at the Premier and Select sessions from this week combined. Over the past five days over NZ$6.5 million less has been spent by domestic buyers who have historically underpinned the middle market.”

The Select Sale also suffered slightly through the expansion of the preceding Premier Yearling Sale which pilfered twenty or so of what would have been, in years gone by, the better Select lots.

three spots on the day, the dearest of which was a NZ$120,000 son of the evergreen stallion Ekraar, who has done so well in New Zealand. The colt from Henley Park at Cambridge came with plenty of pedigree, his dam being the unraced Pentire mare She’s Remarkable, but out of Centaine’s outstanding daughter Arletty. A three-quarter sister to top filly Sixty Seconds, Arletty’s racetrack career included five Group and Listed wins, although her greatest achievement may be as a broodmare, as her daughter Axiom has excelled as a breeder. Axiom first foaled He’s Remarkable, a Gr.3 winner, who lost the Gr.1 Railway Stakes in the Perth Stewards’ Room in controversial circumstances. Axiom then followed up with the brilliant Xtravagant, who put in scintillating performances to win the Gr.1 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas and the Gr.1 Waikato Draught Sprint. As both He’s Remarkable, and the soon to retire to Newhaven Park Stud in New South Wales Xtravagant, were by Pentire they are three-quarter-brothers to She’s Remarkable.

Sold as Lot 1021, the colt will race in Melbourne, having been secured by popular syndicator Brad Spicer.

Very late in proceedings, as Lot 1102 and four from the finish, Haunui Farm sent a son of Iffraaj into the ring for sale. He left a few minutes later with a NZ$115,000 price tag and is bound for Hong Kong, having been bought by bloodstock agent Paul Chow, operating as Tartan Meadow Bloodstock. The colt is out of Tsarina Belle, a winning daughter of Stravinsky, who was third in the Gr.1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas. Chow would be familiar with Tsarina Belle’s only foal to race, the Elusive Quality gelding Happy Index, who won five times in Hong Kong.

A Poet’s Voice colt (Lot 938) from Cambridge-based Monovale Farm rounded out that trio of European stallion-sired youngsters. This fellow made NZ$110,000 and is out of the three-time winning Danehill Dancer mare Perri Lou, a half-sister to the speedy Gr.2 winner Pembleton. She is also a half-sister to the dam of surprise Gr.1 Storm Queen Stakes winner Mirjulisa Lass.

Today is a rest day here with the one-day Festival Sale for the bargain hunters kicking off at 11am local time on Sunday. Then

The first foal of her dam, the filly has a rather American background, her family producing horses of the calibre of Gr.2 winner Tres Borrachos. There were a couple of morsels that would have caught the eye of the locals, Streaming’s dam, Byzantium, being a half-sister to the Canadian Listed winner Roses ‘N’ Wine, who foaled Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Hampton Court when mated to Redoute’s Choice. Local interest would have also centred on the name Makybe Diva, the three-time Gr.1 Melbourne Cup winner appearing as a descendent of the filly’s fourth dam, the Vaguely Noble mare Noble Fancy.

For those not familiar with the sire Burgundy, he is an impeccably-bred son of Redoute’s Choice and the high-class Zabeel mare Grand Echezeaux, and was bought from this Karaka ring for NZ$1.3 million back in 2010. A half-brother to the top performer and successful sire Darci Brahma, he belied his breeding somewhat and was very much a sprinter, winning at Gr.3 level and running third in the Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap. A handsome beast, he stands at Cambridge Stud with his first crop runners showing tremendous promise.

Another young stallion starting to make an impression on both sides of the Tasman is Swiss Ace. A Mr Prospector-line sprinter, who took the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate, still Australia’s greatest test of sheer speed. From four crops at the track, Swiss Ace has produced a handful of Stakes performers, which all seem to be getting better with age. Yesterday his son, out of the Danehill mare Show Exhibit, was knocked down to ex-patriot Kiwi, now Singapore-based trainer Stuart Gray for NZ$135,000.

Offered by Gerry Harvey’s New Zealand-based Westbury Stud, where Swiss Ace stands, the colt came in as Lot 1024. He is a half-brother to four winners, including the useful General Exhibit, who won six races in and around Brisbane. Show Exhibit’s mother, Japonila, is a half-sister to the Gr.3 (then) Beresford Stakes winner Castle Gandolfo, who was also runner-up in the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy. Japonila’s dam, Golden Oriole, is a Northern Dancer full-sister to the sires El Gran Senor and Try My Best.

the focus shifts to Sydney and the revamped three-day Classic Yearling Sale commencing next Saturday evening after racing at nearby Randwick. It will be interesting to see what effect this week’s results will have on Sydney and in a few weeks Melbourne. Several Australian trainers are known to have taken advantage of weakened competition in Auckland and stocked up on horses, the equivalent of which would cost a great deal more in Australia. Whether they have the resources to continue buying over the coming months remains to be seen.

STAKES RACE SEASON OPENS AT LINGFIELD PARKThe first European Stakes races of the year take place today at Lingfield Park. The feature race on the card is the Listed Winter Derby Trial Stakes at 3.05pm. Gr.3 winners Arab Spring and Decorated Knight head a classy field of eight. The former, Arab Spring, is unbeaten in two starts on the all-weather, including an impressive victory in the twelve-furlong Gr.3 September Stakes here in September. The seven-year-old son of Monsun, successful on six of his 13 outings, also captured the 2014 Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot before taking the following year’s Gr.3 John Porter Stakes at Newbury.

All-weather debutant Decorated Knight is having his first start since running out an easy two-length winner of the nine-furlong Gr.3 Meld Stakes at Leopardstown in July. The five-year-old son of Galileo, with four wins from ten starts to his name, was beaten in the last stride on Derby Day at Epsom Downs in the Gr.3 Diomed Stakes over an extended mile in June.

Grendisar (Invincible Spirit) is bidding for a third triumph in the Winter Derby Trial. He followed up last year’s success with victories over course and distance in the Gr.3 Winter Derby and the £200,000 Easter Classic on Good Friday, after which he was crowned All-Weather Horse of the Year.

Lambourn trainer Jamie Osborne is doubly represented with multiple course scorer Battalion (Authorized), who captured the Listed Quebec Stakes in December, and Our Channel (English Channel), who is also a winner at this level on the all-weather, having won the Listed Magnolia Stakes at Kempton Park. The field is completed by Forceful Appeal (Successful Appeal), Mythical Madness (Dubawi) and Solar Deity (Exceed And Excel).

The six-furlong Listed Cleves Stakes gets the Stakes season underway earlier on the card at 2.00pm. The race has attracted eight runners including Godolphin’s Pretend (Invincible Spirit) and the seven-year-old all-weather regular Lancelot Du Lac (Shamardal). Both appeared back to their best last time out, with Pretend landing a six-furlong conditions race at Kempton Park and Lancelot Du Lac defying top-weight in a five-furlong class two handicap at Chelmsford City.

Among the other runners are Gracious John (Baltic King), who was third in the Gr.2 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh last season, Justice Good (Acclamation) and Rivellino (Invincible Spirit), who has won this race for the last two years.

BHA BEGIN RECRUITING FOR DISCIPLINARY AND LICENSING PANELFormer jockeys and trainers are among those being called to step forward as His Honour Brian Barker, the newly-appointed Judicial Panel Chairman of the British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA) quasi-judicial panels, commences his search for new Disciplinary and Licensing Panel members and chairmen.

The appointed Panel chairmen and members will play a key role in upholding the integrity of Britain’s second-biggest spectator sport by being responsible for holding enquiries under the Rules of Racing, hearing appeals against the BHA’s racecourse Stewards’ decisions and, where appropriate, imposing penalties in accordance with the Rules.

The opportunity to become a member of the enlarged Disciplinary and Licensing Panel is open to anyone with relevant expertise, whatever their background. Legally-qualified chairmen are also being sought. Roles are being offered on the basis of a fixed, three-year contract which can be subject to renewal.

A recently published review of the structure, composition and operation of the BHA’s Disciplinary Panel, Appeal Board and Licensing Committee by independent expert Christopher Quinlan stated that the BHA’s current disciplinary system is legally robust and fair, but a number of recommendations were made which Mr Quinlan considered necessary to bring the BHA’s approach in line with best practice in sports governance and to increase confidence among participants and stakeholders.

They included the appointment of the new Judicial Panel Chairman, now filled by His Honour Brian Barker, who is responsible for overseeing an increase in the size of a merged Disciplinary Panel and Licensing Committee under open competition, including any suitably-qualified people with horseracing knowledge. All existing Panel members have been invited to apply for the new positions.

A further recommendation of the Quinlan review means that among those being encouraged to come forward are former jockeys and trainers, whose direct experience of the sport could make them ideal candidates to assist in the formulation of disciplinary verdicts. Current racecourse Stewards will not be able to sit on Disciplinary matters.

Both legally-qualified and lay individuals are sought to fulfil these important positions, although all candidates must demonstrate a good knowledge and appreciation of horseracing and Disciplinary and Licensing processes in sport. Individuals with veterinary expertise are also sought.

Barker said:, “My first priority, having been appointed as Judicial Panel Chairman, is to recruit an enhanced and skilled Disciplinary and Licensing Panel. The BHA impressed me by its commitment to implementing all of the recommendations from the excellent report by Christopher Quinlan. I intend to honour that commitment and ensure that all of the actions I take are in line with the recommendations and intentions of that report.

“Former jockeys and trainers and others connected with the sport could make a significant addition to the Disciplinary and Licensing Panel. They are well placed to understand the nuances and intricacies of a sport in which they have played an active part. This system seems to work very well for the BHA’s Stipendiary Stewards, some of whom are former professional jockeys, and there is no reason why the same should not apply to Disciplinary Panels.”

PRINCESS BREAKS DUCK IN PAU LISTED CONTESTThe main event at Pau yesterday afternoon was the 3500m Listed Prix Camille Duboscq, a hurdle contest exclusively for four-year-olds, which was landed by Lou Princess, a daughter of Haras de Montaigu-based Martaline, who was breaking her maiden at the tenth time of asking.

Racing in midfield as Long Breeze (Royal Assault) and then Saint Leo (Maresca Sorrento) made the pace, the winning filly was ridden before jumping two out, but picked up well to take the lead at the last and she drew away to a six-length win over the rallying Long Breeze, with a length and a half back to Saint Leo.

Bred by C Germain and Mme G Germain, she is the first winner from three foals out of the twice-raced Nile Majique (Kaldounevees). She is a half-sister to the Auteuil Listed winner and Gr.1 runner-up Scarlet Row (Turgeon; dam of the Gr.2 Noel Novices’ Chase winner Politologue) and the Listed Grand Cross de Craon runner-up Adelaide Square (Turgeon). The second dam is a multiple-winning Le Glorieux half-sister to the Auteuil Listed winner Nile Bonheur (Turgeon), the dual Listed-placed Alberto De Ballon (Alberto Giacometti), as well as the winners Nile Alresse (Turgeon; dam of the Listed winner Astre De Ballon) and Nile Princesse (Acteur Francais; dam of the Gr.2 Prix des Drags winner Princesse Kap and the Listed Prix Finot winner Prince Pretender).

GODOLPHIN STUD AND STABLE STAFF AWARDS DEADLINE APPROACHESNominations for the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards close next Friday at 5pm. The awards encompass ten categories, which carry total prize money of €80,000, an increase of €10,000 from 2016, plus a five-day educational tour to Dubai for the Newcomer Award winner.

Nominations can be completed online at www.studandstablestaffawards.ie. Nomination forms can also be downloaded from the website and can be returned to the Marketing Department at Horse Racing Ireland. Forms are also available from Horse Racing Ireland Head Office and members of the Irish Stable Staff Association will be distributing forms at all race meetings this weekend and next week.

The 2017 awards will take place in the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny on Tuesday, 9th May.

Chairman of the Irish Stable Staff Association, Bernard Caldwell, said: “With only a week to go to the nominations deadline, I would encourage everyone working in racing and breeding to nominate their friends and colleagues past and present. Some of the award categories have been amended to more accurately reflect the work of the nominees and to incorporate those working in the breeding sector, so it is worthwhile reading each of the award criteria carefully. Every nomination counts, a person only has to be nominated once to be considered.”

He will now spend the southern hemisphere breeding season at Arrowfield Stud, standing at a fee of A$33,000.

Meanwhile, Gr.1 winner Manhattan Rain is on his way out of Arrowfield to Blue Gum Farm in Victoria. The son of Encosta De Lago sired his first Gr.1 winner last weekend when Whisky Baron took the Gr.1 Met in South Africa.

He is a half-brother to three-time Australian Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and is closely related to fellow Blue Gum stallion Umatilla, as well Al Maher and Hurricane Sky, all of whom have sired Gr.1 winners. Blue Gum Farm’s Phillip Campbell said, “We feel that the Encosta De Lago legacy, that started here so successfully with the amazing support of Victorian breeders, is ‘coming home’ so to speak through his best son at stud. It just seems like a wonderful fit.”

He will stand the 2017 breeding season for a fee of A$16,500.
