The performance all-rounder with qualSINCE the end of produc-tion for the bombastic 1Ma few years ago, the M135ihas been the hottest 1 Se-ries you can get. It has wonitself quite a cult followingin that time, billed as theeveryman’s performancecar; a sort of Golf GTI forpeople who want moresports car credi bility.

Thismodel has beengiventhe latest family styling up-dates, so it’s a whole loadprettier than its immediateancestor, despite how simi-

lar they are under the skin.Burnt orange is the per-

fect colour for the visuallysharpened M135i. Its facehas been neatened, replac-ingthe divisive ‘Rockyafter12 rounds’ look with betterproportions and instantlymore appeal.

The blue brake caliperson this car set the bodycolour off beautifully. Inthree-door mould it’s a re-ally good-looking thing.

Choosing three doors in-stead of five brings with itobvious compromise. It’s afair oldstretchbackto grabthe seat belt, for a start, al-

though there’s absolutelyloads of adjustment inthe driving position. Theride quality is pretty goodon the admittedly smoothPortuguese test route, butthere’s eventually an im-passe between outrightbump-absorption and bodycontrol.

When it comes to priceversus performance, com-pare the everyman’s every-car, the Volkswagen Golf GTI, to the M135i. For notthat much more outlay

the gulf in accelerationis shocking. The BMW ishugely, ferociously fastthrough the lower ratios of its manual gearbox, crush-ing overtakes with brutalspeed.

You could pay less forsimilar performance, butits rivals just don’t havethe same mix of thuggishlyentertaining driving man-ners, marvellous refine-menton request and propersports car noise.

Drivers looking for a per-formance all-rounder willstruggle to find a betterchoice than this BMW. It’s

compact enough to throwaround, big enough to sup-port a young family, andclose enough to the price of an expensive Volkswagento feel extremely tempting.

Powered by the same 3.0-litresupercharged V6 petrol unitused in the F-Type S, the XES has 335bhp and 332lb.ft of torqueand sendsallthat powerto the rear wheels through theeight-speed automatic trans-mission offered elsewhere inthe range. It gains adaptivesuspension and larger brakesas standard too.

Already a good-looking car,the XE looks even more attrac-tive in S guise. Nineteen-inchalloy wheels are standard withoptional 18 or 20-inch versionstoo, and with subtle side skirtsplus resculpted bumpers frontand rear it looks sporting andaggressive but not over thetop. The same goes for the in-side with flashes of colour andaluminium, plus suede trim.

The ‘S’ brand as a step belowthe top performance bracket isstill in its infancy for Jaguarbut the good work done by theF-Type models has establishedits credibility. Rather than be-ing simply a badge and somebigger wheels, the S designa-tion clearly denotes genuineperformance and handling.

There are no compromisesbetween the S model and oth-er versions of the XE, so thespace on offer is well up with

the key class competitors. Theseats are excellent, with stand-ard electric adjustment andenhance support, and it’s easyfor front seat occupants to getcomfortable with good headand legroom.

It’s easy to think of the XE Sas a stop gap before the reallyhot V8-powered R models ar-rive, but anyone shopping fora performance saloon rightnow needs to give this onesome serious consideration.It’s sufficiently luxurious andcomfortable in everyday driv-ing but is great fun to driveand enormously capable whenpressing on.

Summed up in a one word:Jaguar. If this car was a de-fault choice you wouldn’t com-plain one bit.
